I saw him in the museum in Seattle. It was extremely unsettling but powerful. I could stare into the eyes of a man that lived way before me. He had a childhood, he grew up, he laughed, cried, lived. This is someone who had an entire life long ago in a country that would be unrecognizable to me today. And I’m now standing face to face with that man. I felt kind of gross, almost like I was invading his privacy. But I also felt reverence for him.
For those who are curious, Sylvester was so well preserved because he was injected with an arsenic based fluid by an embalmer immediately following his death. Arsenic was used to stop the decomposition by killing bacteria and insects that invaded the body. This caused his body to dry out and subsequently, be mummified.
This is the reason why Elmer McCurdy's preserved corpse was still quite intact and recognizable 65yrs after his death; Embalming with arsenic-based liquid
