I am shocked how good this is, also I didn’t realize how oppressive disabled benefits are. Everyone should see this. It’s a great message, but the information is worth so much. I admire you Zach you are funny and self aware.
As an Oregonian, I'm amazed I have not heard of this program. Thanks for the info! It's about time that someone advocated for disabled person's rights, y'all deserve to have the same quality of life as "normal" people.

I didn't know this either! I guess I kinda understand it's to keep people from abusing the system (like if a millionaire was still collecting) but $2000 seems really extreme. Like saying just because someone has a disability they should live in poverty or lose their Medicare is totally messed up.
IIRC it's part of the help they loose. Still horrid to loose it though. :(
@@suzybearheart530 yes basically it can do things like prevent someone from saving enough for a better wheelchair so they can work, leaves so many people stuck
yeah probably an insanely old law? I'd hope, 2k is nothing now. that's like if you own a toilet and a VR headset with custom controller. Actually 2k is probably a nice mobile chair. WTF.
I looked it up and if you own a car and it's worth more than 4500 then that counts towards your 2k. What a damn joke.

However I am clumsy and somewhat careless at times, so there is hope for the future.
Just remember that to qualify the disability has to happen before the age of 26. LoL

Sounds great, but as a disabled person in Arkansas with "no work credits" (meaning you were born disabled, or were disabled before you could work), the maximum disability check I can receive is a bit less than $800 per month (around $9600/year, when the poverty line is $12,000/year). I have been overdrafting (at a cost of $35 per month) for over a decade now. "Savings" of any kind are far, far from the realm of possibility for me, but I hope this helps others!
I’m a Floridian, disabled from birth so I didn’t get any work credit either. I get a little over $600 a month. I don’t use overdraft protection and instead get my card declined so what little money I’m able to save (usually $10-$20 a month) I don’t lose. I’m gonna lose about the same amount of money and while it’s a hassle just to save a few bucks.
It’s not much of a savings but it comes in handy to have even a small emergency fund to pay for an unexpected medication or for a taxi if my transportation back home doesn’t show up.
@@MissLilyputt That's awful.. my $800 is a struggle to "live on" (though I'm infinitely grateful for it), but $600 is even worse and I imagine the "cost of living" in Florida would be higher than Arkansas.. We deserve better (and I'm asking for better on Twitter all day long, though no one sees 95% of my tweets.. mostly for universal basic income for all of us, especially with COVID and with 50 million unvaccinated kiddos being forced back into schools and daycares so their parents can work.. for the same old stagnant wage, in most cases, many with their unforgiven student loan debt in tow..).

I was very upset by the notion of the asset-threshold being so low. Perhaps I wouldn't have had a chance to learn this without the help and hard work of Zach Anner.
I have autism and (very mild) cerebral palsy and this was hilarious and helpful as someone trying to figure out disability benefits.
This is pretty cool. If the governor of my state (Florida) wasn’t so stupid I’d have hope that he might start something like this in our state but he’s too busy trying to do the opposite of what the president says and giving the president the finger to do his job.
