  • A guide on how to matriculate your vehicle in Ecuador made with the help of ‪@DonShader‬ and the National Transit Agency in Portoviejo, Ecuador "Portovial". While we did focus on car matriculation in the video, as a motorcylce owner I can confirm that the process is very similar for motorcylces with the main difference being in the Revision part but it's actually easier for motorcycles there.

    In New Hampshire the process was very similar when I was a kid in the 90s except you went to private mechanics who were authorized. They checked EVERYTHING. Even cosmetic things like rust on door panels had to be fixed.

      That’s very interesting. When it comes to private mechanics over here, sometimes they’ll have affiliation with a specific car brand, like for example a “Suzuki certified” mechanic who is “authorized” to check your motorcycle/car. I put it all in quotations because with my bike, when I got it checked at a certified place, I didn’t have my toolkit afterwards. I didn’t even know my bike had one until a friend told me. There is a slight chance that maybe it was taken while it was parked while I was out but considering my friend noticed it was gone the same day doesn’t really help me justify the “official” place.

    Hola Ace! Great information about how to take care of the 'matricula' (registration) and I think using Don Shader (a loveable clueless grumpy gringo) was perfect because we identify with him a lot. 👍 Thank you for your work and patience.

    What Don describes is state-specific in the USA. In my state, they don't stick a rod in the pipe or anything. In my state, someone just comes out of the building, walks to your parking spot and checks the turn signals and your mileage, and that's it. You're done. It takes maybe 5 minutes. Very interesting video. I'm a little shocked the registration process is so complex in Ecuador.

      Believe me, when you drive long enough in Ecuador and you’re used to driving in the States this process becomes even more baffling. Like, it would make sense if the vehicles you saw out on the streets were in impeccable conditions and if the laws of the road were being upheld but a lot of the times it’s just not like that. I’m not sure if it’s just “luck” that I don’t see appropriate action taken and if people just lie when they say that they see illegal things 99% of the time but still, quite strange.

    This procedure is longer than in Guayaquil. Here we pay online and we make an appointment online to take the car for the inspection. We bring the car at the specific time, leave it with the inspectors for about 10 to 15 minutes. Then you will be told if your car passed the inspection or not. If you did, they give you the sticker for your windshield and you go home. If your car doesn't pass the inspection, they will tell you what you have to fix and they give you up to a month to do it and come back for new inspection.

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  8 месяцев назад

      I would’ve expected it to be lengthier or more time consuming in Guayaquil with all the vehicles that there are but I’m glad that isn’t the case. The last thing I think anyone wants is a long drawn out process. If I remember correctly, some parts of the procedure can also be done online but most people just get everything done in person to get everything done at once, at least that’s how I feel I get things done a bit faster (not to mention I go at more convenient times).

    Very interesting video.
    Dont take me wrong, but I think your authorities can lean this process a bit and also save money.
    First of all, why do safety inspections on brand new vehicles? Thats a waste. To pay the annual fee is one thing, but safety inspection seem quite redundant.
    Also, why cant they just take they payment there instead of having to go to a bank and then back again. Seem redundant too.
    Third, why the sticker and to have the matrikula with you? Seems quite redundant too, any police should just quickly be ablento look up the vehicle. Back in my home country Sweden, many police cars have vision camera scanners, connected to the database of vehicles. As they drive around the camera scans license plates and the popo will get an alarm from the systen if a vehicles is grounded for not having done the inspection, the annual road tax is not paid, or if the vehicle dont have active insurance. I know Ecuador has good internet framework so it should be doable.
    I seen that the actual inspection is cery similar to ours in Sweden. We do alaonlook for rust. They also check the alignment of the head lights.
    A new vehicle need to be inspected before 36 months, so, one dont need to inspect in 3 years. 2nd inspection is 24 months after the first one, and after that, within 14 months.
    If one has something wrong that is not immjnent serious one get 30 days to fix it and come back to close the non-conformity for a fee of about $26. If it is a serious problem one get a geounded sticker on the car and is only allowed to drive to a mechanic to have it fixed and back to inspection.
    Cheers, always enjoy your videos as well as Dons.

    Way too much red tape! What happens if you fail to do the process and get caught?

      i'm sure ALL vehicles in the country are thoroughly put through this process. 🤣🤣🤣 so what is the fine?

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  8 месяцев назад

      Not sure if you mean failing the inspection or getting caught on the road.
      For the inspection: you’re given time (a month I believe) to get the vehicle in suitable conditions and then you have to go get it checked again.
      On the road: there’s a fine or in the cases of motorcycles some police may confiscate them. Generally the fines are from half the minimum wage ($225) to the whole minimum wage.

    Some of the cars especially pickup trucks that I’ve seen on the roads in Ecuador have definitely skipped the inspections steps. 😂

    Good video.
    I assume the motorcycle does not need a fire extinguisher or first aid kit, if so where are they storing them.
    Also, where does the sticker go on a motorcycle?

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  8 месяцев назад

      The motorcycle definitely doesn’t need an extinguisher, but it should have a tool kit (not mandatory for inspection but useful for emergencies).
      The sticker can go anywhere but most people place it on the gas tank close to the handlebars.

      @@GMAceM thank you.
      I doesnt make sense for a fire extinguisher, but alot of things doesn’t make sense.
      Ive been looking around nearly every motorcycle when i walk by one on the street. In loja, at least 80% dont have a sticker. The ones that do, most are on the right side, some on the top of the tank, a few on the frame.

    is this an annual process, one time for each owner, or just once for the vehicle?

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  8 месяцев назад +1

      This is indeed an annual process but it only needs to be done by one person, the one who’s name is registered with the vehicle.

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  8 месяцев назад +2

      Hello Jeff, if we go by what the unedited footage says then yes, it’s about an hour long but the amount of people will definitely influence this process and also forgetting something can be nightmarish since imagine driving out from one side of the city to the other just to go get your matricula or copy of the matricula. Also, if the line of cars that need to be checked goes over 3 you might be there for a while as well since the revision part is one of the most time consuming parts of the process. I will say though if you have a motorcycle, it’s almost half or less time than it is to get your car checked.
      If you want to play it safe when it comes to “how much time will it take” then always assume at least an hour and if you get out in 30min then that’s just a plus.

    Is it true that speeding tickets can be as high as $200 in Ecuador, and what happens if you don't pay?

    • @GMAceM
      @GMAceM  7 месяцев назад

      I’ve never had a speeding ticket but Don got some unjustly (because of some issues with the license plate that he talked about before) and the fines are pretty hefty. Typically most fines (depending on severity) can be from half the minimum wage ($225) to a whole minimum wage.

      The amount you pay for the process varies on your vehicle. For Motorcycles it’s generally $100 and under while cars can go from $200-300+
      The process can fake anywhere from 30min to 1hr+ depending on how many people are there before you. Part of the tests (I think in the first section) check your exhaust to make sure the emissions are at a decent level for the environment.
