So I work in a record store. We have this old guy (86) who comes in the store once per week just to talk about music, and he frequently brings us gifts (my most memorable gift from him was a bag of 125 7inch singles). He gave me 3 Merle Haggard records on his last visit.
Love how you choose songs that challenge even your own knowledge and stumble through it for us all to learn from together. You are a great teacher Mike 💪
It doesn’t get any better than Merle Haggard and his band. They are always on point. This is just one of many songs that Merle did as a nod to the great Bob Wills and boy is it good. Great video!
I'm from Muskogee and as a kid my dad actually bought an old camper that merle used to live in which is pretty damn cool since that's how I started listening to him and still am today.
Merle was the best there ever was or will be to me. If you had played Riys solo I would have turned it off thinking you were some kind of demon! LOL Roy invented this stuff, a lot off it, and the well is never dry. I listen to Merle and the Strangers all the damn time, always lessons to be learned. Roy, Tiny Moore, Clint Strong, all the Strangers, all Monsters. And Merle was the best singer songwriter (to me) weve ever had.
Those small licks you play between chords are always fun to watch. You could have been rigth there on stage with them without ever even hearing the songs before!
That's the greatness of Roy's solo and Merle loved Roy's style of soloing. To my knowledge Merle was a big fan of Roy when he played lead, so much so he always wanted to play like Roy from a very young age but destiny made Merle the greatest singer and songwriter.
I love watching your videos Michael. I quite often find myself going down a long musical rabbit hole on RUclips only to realise it’s 2am and I need to be up again in 4 hours.. I came across your vids on one of these nights and I’d love to hear your review and analysis of The New Basement Tapes recording of Kansas City. Seriously good musicians recording lyrics written by Bob Dylan, recently discovered and not previously recorded… Marcus Mumford, Taylor Goldsmith, Johnny Depp on guitar (covering for Elvis Costello)… it’s beautifully done and I think you would appreciate their sound. There’s also a brilliant live version with Marcus Mumford & Chris Thile. Thanks for all the late nights! Keep going man!! Peta from Brisbane, Australia
This was a real treat. I spent nine years as a Country radio announcer and the music became part of my DNA. I know you know what I mean. That Tele solo was just what was needed for the song and he kept it Country. The drums and The Hagg also kept it Country. No slouch musicians in this genre. They’re all pickin’ and grinning’ because they know how good they are. If you’re just starting to play guitar explore some of the major Country pickers. Vince Gill, Steve Wariner, Chet Atkins, Brad Paisley, Keith Urban and Roy Clarke. There’s more to shredding than plugging in a Marshall stack. So, so much more.
ok before we start i am holding a tele replica from the one in the movie crossroads i named willie brown. and now we are going to watch Merle play a tele...love it
Thank you sooo much for reviewing a Haggard song. His music and band was so great. There is so much to learn. Morning like Might Merle’s music! Rob, if you wanna discover more of Hag’s vocal, guitar playing and song writing abilities, here’s a link to a 1986 video from Austin City Limits that really showcases all of Hag’s talents listed above. It’s a 1983 hit called “What Am I Gonna Do, With the Rest of My Life” ruclips.net/video/eFmmWo63EAU/видео.html
How’s it goin Michael. From one Mike to another I recommend you check out some of John R Millers RUclips videos. His fireside sessions are a goldmine of great songs, amazing musicianship, and tasty guitar playing. Tyler Childers covered his song Coming Down, I believe they’re friends as well. Cheers!
SOLD! I always love a song where you tell us the chords. You should hear me wailing this on my ukulele. (Maybe not.). I am in my Merle Haggard phase right now. F#7 is not impossible and I can slide it up to approximate E7. Keeping it in my hands and getting better every day thanks to you. 💕🙋🎶
Hag was a huge Bob Wills fan. This prerformance is paying homage to Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. Hag calling out to his band mates as they take their turn is classic Bob Wills.
Love your vids love Merle sing me back home to me is my favorite. love cowboy songs old and new maybe some of your subscribers would like a band called Steel Woods Straw in the wind southern rock but an awesome cowboy vibe
You have to RUclips “Billy Strings Live from Capitol Theatre, 2/4”. An unbelievable, mind-melting bluegrass improv solo. Would love to hear your thoughts
I recommend another bo burnham video "that funny feeling" he plays the guitar and it's got incredible lyrics. It's from that same Netflix special as "welcome to the internet " :) ruclips.net/video/ObOqq1knVxs/видео.html
Since you’re reacting to country, you gotta do Devil Went Down To Georgia original version or a Nickelback s cover. I hate Nickelback, but I do like that cover and Side Of A Bullet
Hey Michael! Just joined the channel a couple weeks ago. I love your content. Would love to see you do a breakdown of Greta Van Fleet song "Heat Above". If you've never heard them, the voice is amazing!!! Here is a live version link. Good times sir!!! ruclips.net/video/h5PiROGaPXg/видео.html
Hey man! I love watching your reactions! If ya get a chance, listen to Aaron Lewis’s new song “life behind bars.” It has a lot of cool symbolism behind it. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/H9y925yAHF0/видео.html

I love the Hag. I'd love to see more from the "Outlaw Country" Scene!! Keep up the great vids!

This song is like the old hymns they play at my church. I love those chord progressions! :D
So happy to see the Hag on here Michael! Would love to hear you breakdown a Willie Nelson song and break down his intricate playing.

Can't believe we're gonna cover Merle. This should be a treat. I'll get my guitar 🎸 😌 🙂 😉.
Merle haggard was the best. So glad you put him on your channel.
You just turned me onto one of my new favorite songs.
Those small licks you play between chords are always fun to watch. You could have been rigth there on stage with them without ever even hearing the songs before!
This chord progression just makes me think of the tune "You got a friend in me" from Toy Story 😀

Michael rules as always! 🤘 You get a chance check out Westbound Revival!! Cool original blues Rock N Roll band from Arkansas... much love ✌🖤🤘

Saw Merle twice in his later years. It was excellent
Sweet vid. Merle was the man 🇺🇸
That’s a Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys tune. Very cool old song

"WOW"!!
That's Western Swing. I love it. I love what you do here Michael.
This is an old Bob Wills song. Classic Western Swing. Western Swing is a mixture of country and jazz.
Roy Nichols was the ONlY time I swung my jazz loving dad to one of my records Roy's solo on one of the "I Love Dixie Blues" album
Roy Nicholas is a wizard man!👍
OK, now you've made me wanna listen to some Asleep At the Wheel. Love Me some Haggard and love me some western swing!
It was probably Lefty Frizzell's influence, but to me Merle Haggard is THE voice of country rich, mellow, yodelable.
Wait a minute. Merle played fiddle??? I always learn something from your videos but this blew my mind.
all-star band
DUDE YES MERLE GETTING SOME LOVE
This entire show is gold. So many great musicians. 👍
It's also the same melody as the 'Toy Story theme song. "You've got a friend in me" YOU'VE got a friend in me

When playing with a fiddle one puts a capo on the second fret. That explains the weird chord shapes.
Great video, please do more Merle Haggard
We gotta get a Doc Watson reaction vid.
Awesome 👌 👏 👍 😍

Well, you might as well look at Asleep at the Wheel as well. Gotta love western swing.
Hag was a huge Bob Wills fan. This prerformance is paying homage to Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. Hag calling out to his band mates as they take their turn is classic Bob Wills.
I would love to see you go through It’s All In The Movies by Ben Haggard. Very smooth groove.
Once again you should react to Georgia on my mind by Jerry Reed
Check out Johnny Hiland and Brent Mason trading licks on Working Man Blues.
You should definitely do a Parker Ryan song! I strongly suggest Ghosts or Dad!
Texas swing sorta connected our tastes.
Please React to COLBY ACUFF, his song "if i were the devil" is just fantastic. Also he's coming out with new stuff soon
Gotta dig country!
Hey mate, would love to see you check out
"Estas Tonne - The song of the golden dragon". Not sure if you've seen it before, but it's truly incredible!
Do here's a Quarter Travis Tritt please
Damn circle of 5ths..im drunk as hell 😂
Love your vids love Merle sing me back home to me is my favorite. love cowboy songs old and new maybe some of your subscribers would like a band called Steel Woods Straw in the wind southern rock but an awesome cowboy vibe
Roy playing some Hank Garland stuff on this one!
The PRS you’re playing in this video is my favorite guitar you have
I wish he done the, what am I gonna do, for the video.
You have to RUclips “Billy Strings Live from Capitol Theatre, 2/4”. An unbelievable, mind-melting bluegrass improv solo. Would love to hear your thoughts
If you live the fiddle you can’t beat Mark O’Connor. And he’s a world class guitar player as well.
The Strangers had some seriously big league pickers over the years, Hag included.
Never saw Merle hit the fid!
Merle Haggard ladies and gentlemen. Nuff said. Roy Nichols one of the goat country pickers.
Redd Volkaert, Merle's next guitarist, is fantastic too.
For sure. He beat me up good!!
I would say Clint Strong before Red
that guitar line is like dicky betts would write
This so Bob Wills!
Wanna see blue eyes crying in the rain by Vince Gill
We need some more bob marley
Please react to John Mayer’s Vultures @ austin city limits in 2007
Hey, can you please do a video on brown eyed women live playing in the sand mid solo with john mayer??
On 2/5/18, the entire show is on youtube and the solo starts around 55:10
I’d argue it’s one of the best mayer dead and co solos
Sounds like Dixieland to me.
Western Swing
Roy Nichols is the Man!
Gotta love Merle Haggard's style!
I recommend another bo burnham video "that funny feeling" he plays the guitar and it's got incredible lyrics. It's from that same Netflix special as "welcome to the internet " :)

Hey mate, can you react to Luca Stricagnolli
Since you’re reacting to country, you gotta do Devil Went Down To Georgia original version or a Nickelback s cover. I hate Nickelback, but I do like that cover and Side Of A Bullet
Testament The Ritual
Gene Parmesan?
