  • Well, we are off to rescue another forgotten and abandon muscle car.... A GTO at that, to add to the collection of junk GTOs we have rescued. This story is unfortunately a sad one, I bought this car and the 1955 Buick Roadmaster Sedan from a lady whose brother used to own them. Sadly, he passed away at a young age and the cars have succumbed to mother nature. But both are worth saving. I love Pontiac GTOs- the original muscle car! 1966 is the first year of the GTO being its own model and not just a trim level of a LeMans. It's also the last year of the 389ci Pontiac v8. The 400ci came out in 1967, with a few other changes physically to the cars, the taillights being the main one. It pains me how rough this poor GOAT is, 1966 is probably my favorite year of GTO. I have a dream to resurrect this machine as a ratty and rough driver. The maroon/ maroon exterior and parchment interior is really cool, but the car might be more than I have time to tackle. This particular 1966 Pontiac GTO was pretty sweet with the 389ci v8 and an odd 2 speed automatic transmission backed with a safety trac posi rear end. Air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. Plus, no vinyl top, which really saved the car from being any worse than it is, and a reverb stereo system. I may get the PHS documentation for the car just in case there's anything special about this particular GTO. It's really cool to see that the car has a 1966 Florida Tag on it.
Here is the back story I was given on the car's history - The GTO came from Anchorage, AK by way of Mike C. Mike’s parents were both in the Air Force. They were at Tyndall in the mid-70s. The family moved to Anchorage sometime in the back half of the 70s. Mike left Alaska sometime before the rest of the family - probably shortly after he graduated high school which should have been 1981. He flat-towed the GTO to Colorado (Denver?) where he attended a technical school. He and the GTO ended up in Panama City sometime before 1985. Then sometime after that Hal the late gentleman that owned the car ended up with it. He also had a gold 1969 GTO which had unfortunately already sold.

This is my first comment on this channel. Where have you guys been?? I'm a 71 y.o. guy who's been into cars all my life. My history with cars and their stories is rather long, but condensed it's kinda' like this: I had a '40 Ford Tudor (2 dr.) in high school in the late '60's that I bought off a used car lot in San Antonio, TX in around 1968. It had been rewired for 12 volt and had a pure stock 265 V8 Chevy that had been put in by an air force officer from Lackland air force base. I was "married" via an adapter to the original 3 speed tranny and rear end. I sold it as I graduated from h.s.. Fast forward to '72 when I bought a '66 GTO with the original 389 and powerglide tranny. At about 130,000 miles, I sold it outright and bought a '68 all black GTO. Just after that, the Arab oil embargo hit and I couldn't afford the leaded premium gas it guzzled and bought a '73 Impala with a 307 V8. I've never owned a performance car since.
That's my car history in a nutshell. I really enjoy your channel, and I can totally relate. Keep the good videos rolling!

Thank you! I’m glad you found us and I really appreciate you joining us for the journey! We love the old hotrods and muscle cars and the stories they can tell. I try to save what I can and give it a second chance at life or either find someone else who can. Sounds like you had some cool rides back in the day! That 40’ sounds super sweet! Check out some of the older videos we have pulled quite a few hotrods from their final resting place. Have a good one! 🤙

That's an easy decode. We got the tag, we can brag: 07A for the first week of July 1966 production, 66 for 1966 model year, 24217 for Pontiac (2), GTO (42), two door hardtop coupe, KAN for Kansas City, MO assembly (Leeds), 224 for Parchment vinyl interior trim, N-N for Burgundy lower and upper exterior paint, accessory code of E for tinted glass all windows, 2K for air conditioning, W for two speed automatic transmission, G for console, V for Vebra-Phonic rear speaker, 5Y for custom seat belts. The Leeds, MO plant operated from 1929 to 1988 and was only recently demolished.
With the VIN, you'll win: 2 for Pontiac, 42 for GTO, 17 for two door hardtop coupe, 6 for 1966 model year, K for Kansas City, MO assembly (Leeds, MO) and the rest is the production sequence.
