The abandoned 1966 Pontiac GTO gets its first wash in years! Can we save it? Is it junk?

  • We saved another GTO if y'all missed last week's video go back and check it out. You'll get to see us drag this crusty GTO out of its hiding place for the last 30 years. It's a 1966 model which I love and am so stoked about! No doubt the car is rough, but we plan to save it anyway, I doubt it will ever get that restoration everyone thinks you need to spend 100k on. But to me, if it's no longer stationary rusting away and it's back on the streets pounding the ground.... People get to see the car and check it out, enjoy the story and it'll do a big fat burn out. That is good enough for me. I really have been studying this one in my head and I mentioned putting the 400ci/th400 from the 1969 GTO we are building into the 66 and just make a ratty beater, then LS swap the 69. Well i think I am going to do just the opposite, LS swap the 66 GTO and put a Muncie 4 speed in it while I am at it. Just a little heads/ cam 5.3 LS and a M21 Muncie that we have laying around. This car would be a blast with 4-wheel disk brakes and rebuilt suspension making around 350 HP at the ground.
    Well, we are off to rescue another forgotten and abandon muscle car.... A GTO at that, to add to the collection of junk GTOs we have rescued. This story is unfortunately a sad one, I bought this car and the 1955 Buick Roadmaster Sedan from a lady whose brother used to own them. Sadly, he passed away at a young age and the cars have succumbed to mother nature. But both are worth saving. I love Pontiac GTOs- the original muscle car! 1966 is the first year of the GTO being its own model and not just a trim level of a LeMans. It's also the last year of the 389ci Pontiac v8. The 400ci came out in 1967, with a few other changes physically to the cars, the taillights being the main one. It pains me how rough this poor GOAT is, 1966 is probably my favorite year of GTO. I have a dream to resurrect this machine as a ratty and rough driver. The maroon/ maroon exterior and parchment interior is really cool, but the car might be more than I have time to tackle. This particular 1966 Pontiac GTO was pretty sweet with the 389ci v8 and an odd 2 speed automatic transmission backed with a safety trac posi rear end. Air conditioning, power steering, and power brakes. Plus, no vinyl top, which really saved the car from being any worse than it is, and a reverb stereo system. I may get the PHS documentation for the car just in case there's anything special about this particular GTO. It's really cool to see that the car has a 1966 Florida Tag on it.
    Here is the back story I was given on the car's history - The GTO came from Anchorage, AK by way of Mike C. Mike’s parents were both in the Air Force. They were at Tyndall in the mid-70s. The family moved to Anchorage sometime in the back half of the 70s. Mike left Alaska sometime before the rest of the family - probably shortly after he graduated high school which should have been 1981. He flat-towed the GTO to Colorado (Denver?) where he attended a technical school. He and the GTO ended up in Panama City sometime before 1985. Then sometime after that Hal the late gentleman that owned the car ended up with it. He also had a gold 1969 GTO which had unfortunately already sold.

    Cleaned up ok! That's the most love that car has seen in a long time! Nice shout out to Dalton. I gave him the rear end for the holey goat. The car is quite the novelty for sure! I love what he did with it. Maybe this 66 will have a similar fate? Keep up the good work!

      It’s medium haha it’ll look good with poppies patina on it. Daltons a cool dude got to meet him last year at no name nationals. I’m on the fence, I’m thinking I’ll keep the 69 GTO Pontiac powered and just LS 4 speed this one and beat the snot out of it!

    That's awesome man...getting her back on the road will be fun enough. She don't need to be a beauty queen. She'll get more looks the way she is I think.
    I pulled a 63 GP from a property in W.P. Florida myself back in May. She was sitting on a trailer for some years . Car came from Washington state...so...she...is...crusty..lol, but a complete matching #s car with the 389 4bbl that actually started right up with can gas after some basic prep. And has the Rotomatic trans...😐 The frame rails are gone so I'm having a nice frame coming form from Frank's Pontiac Parts out in Cali. really nice folks there. The floor pans are pretty solid surprisingly. I'm going to do a "Rustomod" ...she'll be a budget build for sure. Will be fun to see her cruising the streets again. I may give her a different drivetrain at some point..a few options are on the table.
    Keep up the cool videos..Like to see cars like this given new life.
    And remember kids!...anything is fixable..no matter how far gone you think it is. Just need a plan, time, patience and $$...lol

      I’m right there with you! As long as it’s been given new life and can cruse the streets and do a burn out…. It’s good enough! I’m probably gonna go LS on this one and just keep the 69 poncho powered. But you’re right about that time and money can make a world of difference haha

    1964-1966 GTO had a 2 speed ST300 that was a Buick transmission with the switch pitch converter if you had a automatic option in the car. It was used By Buick Olds and Pontiac. Chevy used the Powerglide. The base transmission was a 3 speed stick and a 4 speed was a option.

    • @323Fabrication
      @323Fabrication  10 месяцев назад +1

    • @thomasthurston6656
      @thomasthurston6656 10 месяцев назад +1

      @323Fabrication 67 was the first year for the 3 speed auto but only with the 400. I have a 67 Buick Special Deluxe bought new by my great grandparents. It has the factory V6 and ST300. I ran lacr and Pomona in Socal they run almost the full 1/4 in 1st gear on the floor. It ran low 18s at about 78 mph. I drove in about 60 miles from home did nothing to it points and dual exhaust that was about all. Pomona is about 25 miles I am close to Long Beach CA. I was like a nervous wreck lol hit like 900 light lol that didn't help.

    • @thomasthurston6656
      @thomasthurston6656 10 месяцев назад +1

      @323Fabrication I think it has some high gears also. I have no problem on the freeways doing 80 to 85. The trim tag will decode W for the 2 speed group 2 and Z for the 3 speed auto.

    Weld up the holes on the flat steel spots like that section on the lip of the trunk there... take no time to buzzap that in with some stitch welding.... then grinder and paint the welder we ain't sort of deal [tractor paint]. Numbers match out the window. If you want to go strictly Pontiac... Butler Performance for that 400 you have for just crazy performance heads and intake... yada yada... Money gets up there a bit but... if you want to get faster for a whole lot less you'd drop a junkyard 6 Ltr LS into it or do the old auction thing to get a rolled Cadillac truck brad of 7.3 ltr LS for it [so much powah]. :-)

    • @323Fabrication
      @323Fabrication  10 месяцев назад

      Hard to weld to rust haha! Gonna try and find some used sheet metal and probably go LS, you spend way to much money building a Pontiac just so it makes what a junk LS with a big ol camshaft will and the reliability won’t be there with the poncho

    Dude, listen to me. Put the 389 2 speed in it. How do I know? my buddy had a 67 LeMans 2 dr with a 65 389 2bbl {numbers showed it was the police and taxi engine, with 11:75:1 compression} stock 3.23 rear end that did 112 in the quarter mile, stock, (while we were senior in high school in 1976) and that's no lie. DeLorean knew exactly what he was doing with the 389. Honor DeLorean. To sit in this from a dead stop it would go 0 to 90 in LOW gear. And pull you back in the buckets . Later, with the hooker headers and thrush side pipes air shocks new springs Edelbrock hi rise and a 'tight' 4bbl, we took it from Dallas to Syracuse for a weekend wedding, with 4 in the car we made it in 12 hrs. It was like flying in a plane on the ground. Mind you, we were not hacks, we spent a lot of time restoring this mechanically. Too much to list but the basic was the 100k, 389 block. He could put a set of old tires on and burn them for an entire city block. He could drive to my house without coming off idle.
    This engine had original block and the heads were done and oil pump, new lifters, transmission rebuilt. It beat a rebuilt Mopar GTX 383 4 banger in the quarter. It took on corvettes midwest. There is nothing, nothing like the pull and power that thing had. It lost to no car. To sit in the passenger seat was a thrill.

    I got a kick out of your sound effects while shifting the car. My uncle had a goat same year. It ran and drove and he put a hitch on it and use it for pulling his boat and out of the lake at the landing. The car had no front clip.
