For someone who's advansed in the art of Aikido, an aggressive encounter could be handled peacefully without causing harm or extensive harm. With my small experience, I can say that aikido doesn't make you a fighter but as judo it make you aware of body placement and how to use your weight and the weight of your opponent to help you.
It also learns you how to fall, and that is a skill that's very useful in life in general !

I don't know about others but an intensive 6 month training of Aikido helped me fixate an attacker by using arms, he was not able to move which gave me the ability to talk to him and calm him down. Or made him realize there's no point in trying to attack me again because I will just do the same thing again. This experience made me believe in Aikido.

That's exactly the use of martial arts nowadays (well, in my opinion, anyway), to be able to defend another. Running is usually just much more effective. However, you, or more often another, might not be able to run. Then, you'd like to be able to hold your own and defend yourself or the other.
This situation might not even ever happen in your life, but it's always good to be prepared, I think. Besides, I just like to see the movements of martial artists.

Owen Modeste you're right. No matter what martial arts you learn be it Karate, Tang Soo Do, Kungfu, Boxing, Krav Maga etc..they only teaches responds and movements based on known situations and controlled environment or settings. What differs a fighter and a martial artist is the ability to observe, learn, adapt, improvise and overcome the challenges that comes. There's no other ideal way to achieve that except facing the real situations. Some martial arts like Krav Maga are not known by many but they are as lethal as others because people uses them in real fight for life. Just ask any Israeli soldiers or maybe if you are fortunate enough may request for a training and 'fight' at their army bases. Formality is only for demonstrations and training. The practicality of the mives and responds to any given situations will have to be obtained in real life fights whereby your win will be determined by your ability to adapt and improvise. Good luck.

The man was a street fighter for real (he taunted bad boys abroad in pubs and alleys when he traveled for his demonstrations and made them bleed...) and he was a hell of a fighter, but he mixed aikido with other martial arts and common sense. He once told my father aikido is the ultimate martial art, but you must be very good to make the most of it, else you won't stand a chance if someone well trained attacks you. Better learn box or something else if you don't practise it at a very high level.

I am second degree brown belt from the 90's and Aikido is a combination of mixed arts( Karate, self defense and Judo). When used correctly should be sufficient. Self defense always prevail in feeling to realize it's about to go down to prepare. The initial reaction to the confrontation normally determines the direction of the altercation. But with a seasoned fighter, you can recover from loosing with a given opportunity.

He says, "Aikido in its basic form doesn’t work. What works are the principles. Aikido is not designed to 'work.' It’s designed for the study of certain principles - distance, economy of action, technique, accuracy, how to become an axis, how to use leverage, how to place oneself in relation to an attack. It’s the principles that 'work.'"

The fancy stuff only works in the dojo when your "attacker " gives you their whatever and allows you to complete the technique. In a real life fight, they do not. Only the simple stuff in a real fight works, especially against a trained opponent. It comes down to simple, quick and powerful techniques. This guy is exactly right. And don't trust anyone, they will try the dirtiest low life stuff. Never take your eyes off any attacker and expect anything. The few times I got hit were sneak attacks. I learned to avoid fights. All the things you showed is exactly why Aikido succeeds in the street fight. The problem with people who take Aikido is they try to apply a straight kata, to a street fight, no straight taught approach with ANY martial art works with a textbook kata. One has to interpret and apply the lessons in a kata in a practical way! I stress that to my students (first dan here). Aikido is a fantastic practical martial art but a lot of people seem to have a problem implementing the techniques in a practical way. It's about redirection, and joint manipulation in a direct way when faced with a direct threat. True Aikido way is to inflict the least amount of harm necessary to subdue or disable your opponent but in the end, the choice of needed force is up to you. My Aikido training has saved me numerous times, whether it was just diffusing the situation or having to handle an angry violent opponent. I have also studied Tai Chi, Chin Na and Shotokan Karate, but it was Aikido that made the most sense in a life and death situation.

The "effective, simple strike" he did there is the very first technique in the 17 basic technique of Aikido. It's the first one of Atemiwaza. Also, once you get to a certain level of Aikido, the form does not matter. What matters is the principles behind it. Breaking balance, get out of the way, attack your opponent's physical weak point, etc. If you just desperately trying to perform a technique on the street without any adaptation to the situation, of course you will get hit. And that's not what Aikido promotes. DON'T BLAME AIKIDO; BLAME YOURSELF FOR NOT LEARNING THE CORE OF AIKIDO.

Decades later, one winter day I'm out walking to the garage after an ice storm and hit a slippery spot and went flying through the air in a fall that could have seriously injured or killed me. But the old training, I had thought long since forgotten kicked in and in the 1 second or so that I was airborne, I twisted to the right, got my right arm out and slapped the ground as I came down and hit. To my amazement, nothing hurt, nothing broken, not even an ache. I got up, brushed myself off, marveled at how such a simple trick could work and went about my business.

you are correct to a point, you are not in a street fight, you are a customer service person.Loose the strikes, simple throws for distance side ways so he doesn't hit his head, and can run away, come drink again another day...if not thrown person, joint lock to pain compliance level, escort them out the door. The old school akido philosophy "I am not afraid of you, I don't need to hurt you" was the most brilliant idea that covered 90 percent of fights. I love these people and I got to pull them apart again and put them to bed like naughty children.I live the old school philosophy. a 70 year old woman attacked me, grabbed my over all straps and tried to throw me to the earth. I raised my shoulder so she wouldn't fall and be hurt. She grabbed me in a bear hug to throw me down and I stood like a block of calm buddhist stone, turned my head to the side so as to not she her make a fool of herself...she rold my girl friend she could throw me to the ground,,,she told my friend she could throw me to the ground.. my friend said "what will you do with him on the ground? he is crazy and tough as a draft horse, If you want I will bet him five bucks he can't get on the ground and let you kick him till you get winded." It was a sad thing all around, her boy friend was dying his family was being mean to her, and it there is any reason god put me here it was to do nothing but care for others.

All the more advanced, elder people in my dojo and even the sensei tell me the same stuff and actually show me these things you show. Keep it simple, always use a punch or elbow or w/e after your 'block' or deflection to put em out of balance and step in their centre. This isen't a show you're putting on.

Use these in street fight, wrecked the attacker... alot of mma, boxing people tend to dismiss these... but than mma and Boxing ain't streetfight either.. The street don't have boxing/mma gloves.. Nor fights end on the ground (only losers end up there). Still... definitely you should learn boxing/judo since they cover all the basic in the most simple way possible (like the video preach)... alot of the "techniques" work well against "ordinary" people. I've used the video techniques in all my street fights. Worked. Friends used Aikido, Muaythai... at the end.. It's the person that matters. However, like I mentioned above.. Martial arts who teach simple-fast stuff have more potential for efficiency.. Hence I recommend everyone to do Boxing or MuayThai, Judo than go in AikiJutjitsu/kravmaga/cqc... and to pick a great school

I'm an Aikidoka and a Special Forces Combat Vet and this guys is the closest to my Shihan's style (Karl Geis). In short, real Aikido, really applied. Well done.
I have fought 3-5 people at once on the streets and defeated them all, each time, but he applies a bit more direct force in some cases where we would simply continue the technique to break the arm, spine or neck, which he can't do due to legalities. So, true Aikido can be super powerful in real fights, but it's dangerous. His blend of street with Aikido is a well executed application of Aikido professionally. This Gent is one of my faves. Respects & Salute. Thanks AikidoFlow- great mission!

First, let me say that if you want to do Aikido as an art form and to continue on a tradition, that's awesome. More power to you. That said, I don't personally believe it's an effective fighting form.
Bruce Lee said that a person who studies Boxing and Wrestling for a year can beat any person who has studied martial arts for 20 years. As a person who took Taekwondo lessons for a number of years as a teen, I tend to agree with him. I spent countless hours drilling katas that have ZERO application in a real fight. The moves represent moves that you could do in a real fight ... hypothetically ... but in reality there's no way they'd actually work. I spent countless hours standing in rigid stances throwing punches and kicks that, in an actual fight, would NEVER land or do any real damage. Practical application of punching and kicking only accounted for about 5% of class time. In retrospect, I can see that other 95% was a complete waste of time. I stopped attending classes a little more than a year into it because I realized that neither I nor any of the people who joined around the same time I did were really any better at fighting than when we started. We could do a bunch of cool moves and break boards but when it came down to sparing we were all just floundering. As soon as they said "fight!" all technique went right out the window because there's no way to actually hit a person while standing in a horse stance!
There's a lot of absolute nonsense wrapped up in most martial arts. Take for example 1:30. The guy throws a punch and the host uses his hand to guide him around and do a bunch of stuff to him. In a real fight, nobody is going to throw a punch and just leave their hand hanging out there for their opponent to grab and do all that stuff with. The only reason the host was able to do any of that stuff is because the guy pretends to throw a punch, then freezes in place so the host can use him as a strawman. There are no strawmen in real combat.

Aikido was developed based on traditional Budo, and based on attacks of a feudal Japan with a touch of modern attacks - the reality of the founder. It not only stopped "developing" after the founder died, but also got changed to that peaceful movement (called fake) after the carnage the Japanese people suffered after WWII. Control of movement ("strawman partners") is what aikidocas use nowadays to learn the art's concepts. People often fail to understand real Aikido as a fight by looking the way it's trained - including the guy on video showing that "this is what aikido is". So yeah, comments are right Aikido is more tradition than anything nowadays, but you certainly can find people that study it deeply and now how to apply it.

It's a lot of fun to walk into these public seminars, pay your modest fee, and learn something new. It makes me reconsider the "how and why" of techniques I have been taken for granted. Practice doesn't make perfect - practice makes permanent and it up to us, especially at black belt level, to search out other styles and see what works for *us* as individuals.

Police in Japan are, by NPA regulation, required to practice either aikido, judo, or kendo. They are expressly forbidden to practice things like karate or MMA on police time. Certain special units are allowed to cross train in select other things. For example, the Special Police Reaction Unit (basically, an anti-terrorism unit) in the Tohoku region cross train in Olympic style wrestling.

I agree with your statements and wish to add that Aikidoka generally find the art after having done other arts and/or boxing. They tend to have evolved past the "works in the street" mentality and have moved on to love of the art and it's discipline for the sake of the art and the discipline. People searching for the ultimate martial art dont seem to be capable of understanding that there isnt one. Everything is a compromise or an adaptation to a style's compromise. In the "real world" situations these goes go on and on about, all it takes is 7 or 8 well executed and practiced basic techniques to be able to beat 99% of the bar brawlers out there. The other 1%, well; it's gonna hurt bro. lol. Avoidance is the best way to win a street fight.

I'd say all of these are aikido techniques that you might learn quite early. :) I like the reasoning though, a quick technique that goes for the head will likely cause less damage to your opponent than a prolonged fight even if that technique involves an elbow, and it won't look as bad to a court of law.

  • @jtnachos16

Every organized martial art that isn't specifically trained as a method of assault will fail in an IRL situation, because most the practitioners unconciously hold back, or are expecting specific responses to their movements. They don't have the mindset needed for the follow through.
I've been in a few fights, and had to bail a friend out of one, where he thought his martial arts (competition judo) made him better than some drunk dude on the street in a fight. He had no idea how to respond upon the other guy not letting himself be thrown. He also got himself a good thumping from me afterward when he told me he 'didn't want to hurt the guy'. If you get in a real fight, your priority better be removing the threat as quickly as possible, even if that means breaking things.
None of the modern taught martial arts, at least in the western world are truly taught as a martial art anymore, and as a result aren't really viable as a self defense method, because there are holes in either the technique taught, or in the mindset taught.

Parts of it work, but parts are unrealistic on the street. However, it's a fun martial art and great exercise, and can provide a lovely spiritual practice. I did it for 8 years, and I taught for 4 of those. No regrets - but I did end up moving on. P.S. THE FALLS!!! OMG, the most useful part of Aikido are the falls. @Alyanorno10785 5 лет назад +1

Yeah but avoiding a fight isn’t just running away. It could be making sure you always have multiple escape plans, being aware of when you might be in danger (your body has built-in tools for this) and remembering that no matter what your chosen discipline/weapons/experience may be: if you round a corner and there’s a group of people waiting to jump you, it won’t matter how good your hand-to-hand skills are. A gun wouldn’t even get your out unscathed if there’s more than a couple attackers. Good cardio and knowing how to vault would probably help you there.
Being able to win a ground fight %99 of the time is only so useful if, when you take your assailant down and start incapacitating him, his buddy starts carving out your kidneys or slicing up your tendons.
It’s too easy to lose a fight before it starts. Using your best judgement to reduce your disadvantage in potentially dangerous situations is fighting with your mind before having to resort to risking your body. That’s how i interpret that quote.

    • @mr_d3adw873
      @mr_d3adw873 5 лет назад +1

@@Alyanorno10785 you're very right, both skills are useful. And I'll never downplay the importance of situational awareness. Being able to think ahead and know when a fight is going to end up with you in a body bag or in the ICU and having a good way out is very important. But the way most people interpret that quote is that you should always JUST try to get away or talk it down, but the sad truth is eventually you're going to be cornered or there's gonna be someone you have to protect and running isn't going to help. It isn't even going to be an option. So knowing what to do in any situation is important. Whether it's being ready to outrun a group of five guys or protecting your best friend from her abusive boyfriend, both skills are a great thing to have.

That defense against the hook. In Five Family/Five Animals Shaolin Kung Fu That would be Dragon or a Tiger technique depending on if you go for his eyes after the palm strike. I've studied Tang Soo Do and currently Kenpo as well as a few other Kung Fu styles and Boxing. What I found is the same techniques can be found across different styles.

This seems the only Aikido focused page that's realistic about what Aikido can accomplish and what it can't as a fighting style, and the need to "supplement" it with additional tools not classic Aikido.

@1:48 - Try that in a real fight (but seriously, don't).
When an angry attacker charges-in with his fist blasting full-power into your face, momentum of his full body behind it, try redirecting his right arm with a gentle push from your left as you bring your right-arm up through the middle. Guess what's going to happen?
There's a million RUclips videos of "masters" trying such nonsense against a hard style, and the attacker just blasts right through and destroys him... every time.
There's a reason why you've never seen someone thrown by one of those beautiful Aikido moves in an MMA fight.
