Saw the Stones 6 July 1972 and was standing close enough to see Keith play this close-up .. on the "you got to roll me" part - he just stuck on it and played it over and over for about 5 mins while we swayed and sang along .... wow! one of the best moments of my life! your friend, Slim
Keith said he could play that riff for half an hour or more. Having learned it, I agree with him. Both the music you are making and the playing of it are very enjoyable.
46 years old here. After a LONG playing hiatus (20 years) I had renewed interest to play again a couple months ago. I was never that good to begin with but holy hell, JJ's videos are so damn accessible. Thanks to this video I nailed the song in a few minutes :) Out of all the lesson-oriented YT channels I'm subscribed to, JJ is my fave.
Love it. Quite possibly my favourite Stones track. I might even have been known to do in the Pub Kareoke after quaffing Guinness and a few Southern Comforts. Great Stuff. Thank you for showing how it's played.
thanks for this and all your other great videos. Im always amazed at the simplicity of most the Stones stuff. Shows that its the SONG that counts, melody over speed and complexity wins evertime. Love your instructional vids.
Excellent sounds like it ,that song has always picked me up no matter what ,thanks brother ,would ve taken me 1000 yrs to try by ear, trial error u know
Just been listening to some stones the last couple of nights. Damn they took down a lot of live concerts I use to watch. There were some great shows from '78 Texas, now they're gone.
Also my favorite version of tumbling dice. That walk down is awesome. Anyway, I'm new to guitar thanks very much for these videos man. And on the old channel as well. Im able to following your fretting hand much better now that iv been playing for couple years. But been watching PT videos ever since I first held a guitar. Rock on !
Gheez! That was just incredible for you to "just figure it out" amazing use of muting. That is the key right there! Bravo. I wish you would come back == but.... I can totally understand. You provided and did your justice to the community. "Hey All" "Good Luck"
They filmed two takes (Mick T had already set his guitar down after the first take -- that's why he enters this one a little late), and this second one was slower. I like this slow one a lot better.
Was just listening to the Brussels Affair yesterday and that version so good. So, I have to ask- when I first came to the PT channel years ago it was while searching for Keef-related lessons, and you were heavy into going through a ton of his stuff then. At that point, I had the distinct impression Keef/Stones was your favorite band. Then, I saw your video going through your old magazines collection, and it was pretty obvious you've been a huge Zep fan for a long time. And, you like plenty of other artists too. My question is- if pressed to pick a favorite guitarist or band (could be different answers for each I suppose) what would you say? Thanks for all the vids. You've helped me a ton with my playing.
Hey Mr JJ, Have you ever figured out Waddy's standard tune version that he did with Linda Ronstadt? Or is it standard, I watched and he has no Capo, sounds like maybe D I dunno
Stupid question from a non guitar player but are you playing Mick Taylor's part or Keith Richard's part? To me, it sounds like Keith Richard's part. But, I could be wrong.
When you hear that chugging rhythm guitar on a Stones song, it’s Keith. During the Mick T period, their duties were pretty well split between rhythm and lead. Keith did some solos (particularly onstage), but Mick T did most of them.
probably the only song I would play with a Tele exactly like Keith's if I ever owned one... hate capos due to the damage they can do if guitar falls lands on back of neck. . causes 2 lil marks/vertical scares you can feel while playing.. bought a used GLPC from GC with that lil undisclosed detail b4 purchase over the phone..
hi James James love. how are you ? yeah ? lovely. I leave one of my guitars constantly tuned to open E. is that sensible ? or will I find the headstock just snapped off one day ? let me know. Cheer's, Chris.
Thanks James. Great lesson and a great song. Are you able to post a link to the version you play along with? Is it from "Ladies and Gentlemen The Rolling Stones" movie
Evidently you don’t need to, but have you ever considered removing the low E string for open G playing? Do you think it would be helpful for more aggressive type playing?
I've got one of those! Same gold top, but mine has a rosewood fingerboard. It's a good guitar. It's been languishing in back of the closet for a long time. I need to put it back into rotation!

That's awesome! I saw them in '72 as well, and the opening chords to this song are the first memory that comes to me.
Keith said he could play that riff for half an hour or more. Having learned it, I agree with him. Both the music you are making and the playing of it are very enjoyable.
one of the greatest riffs ever
One of the greatest opening guitar riffs ever written
Man, that open G is always so much damn fun! Thanks as always for the tutorials!
Never gets old . Time and time again come back to this. Hope your doing well health wise

I am in the exact same place. Other than nailing this song.
Love it. Quite possibly my favourite Stones track. I might even have been known to do in the Pub Kareoke after quaffing Guinness and a few Southern Comforts. Great Stuff. Thank you for showing how it's played.
There's fever in the funk house now great job 👍
Glad to see ya back on here, alot of us appreciate what you do.
A perfect example of what makes the Stones something else .This is so far behind the beat it's nearly stood still
don't ya just love it JJ
Dude you are awesome! I've been watching u for bout a few yrs now and Keith himself would be proud. Good job bro.
The Keith 69 tour licks is my favorite. It's awesome to see someone diggin and playin his stuff. Thanks
I really appreciate your videos. You’re humility is refreshing but your lessons are fantastic. Many thanks
Excellent !! One of my fav all time tracks.
Great version. And always a great job. Pulling out my tele now! Thanks for the inspiration.
thanks for this and all your other great videos. Im always amazed at the simplicity of most the Stones stuff. Shows that its the SONG that counts, melody over speed and complexity wins evertime. Love your instructional vids.
Totally agree. I'm so glad I developed a preference for playing Stones songs over The Beatles; much easier learning.
Excellent sounds like it ,that song has always picked me up no matter what ,thanks brother ,would ve taken me 1000 yrs to try by ear, trial error u know
Nice. Very nice. Well done. I'm impressed. Ok You're good. Damn good. I gotta keep going to the wood shed.
It's like he plays it as good as Keith. Unreal
Also love the Schecter guitar. It brings me back to The Who '82 "Farewell" Tour.
It is the perfect rock song - you do a great job with it.
Just been listening to some stones the last couple of nights. Damn they took down a lot of live concerts I use to watch. There were some great shows from '78 Texas, now they're gone.
Troy Strain I know. Totally sucks doesn't it but the good thing is we're all old enough we got to see them live
Troy Strain I wish they were still up, too. C'est la vie
not all..... :(
Thank you JJ. Love that Tele tone, and of course your playing on this great track.
Boy, you are so much! Loved It!
That was mesmerizing.
Brilliantly played. Thanks for the schooling. Can't wait to try this one. Keith says it's all in the wrist. I think he may be right. The rhythm.
Sure miss the lessons and company, hope you guys are doing good!!! best wishes

Tshirt reminds me of the old Flaming Carrot comic. South Carolina Gamecocks tonight! Thanks, James!
Disclaimer for anyone watching: There is a new stones documentary on Netflix. Really good
Title?
Rolling Stones: Crossfire Hurricane. I was mistaken thinking it was new (its from 2012) but I haven't seen it before
Yeah, it's pretty good.
Nathan Barge is it available in Canada?
Backtoshallabal no idea tbh
love this song, I love playing it too
There's so many amazing performances from that Beat Club that I discovered within the past year or so...including the late great Mr. Berry
AOB That Chuck show from 72 is incredible.

Gheez! That was just incredible for you to "just figure it out" amazing use of muting. That is the key right there! Bravo. I wish you would come back == but.... I can totally understand. You provided and did your justice to the community.
"Hey All" "Good Luck"
Just a cool rockin groove only the stones would’ve came out with.
This is one of my favourite stone's song. Great job! It's perfect. I'd like to play like you one day hahaha
great style. Laid back and tough
Great video man. Congratulations ;)

Bravoooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Never heard this slower version, but that's brilliant
They filmed two takes (Mick T had already set his guitar down after the first take -- that's why he enters this one a little late), and this second one was slower. I like this slow one a lot better.

Thanks for posting all these Keef/Stones vids . . .I am curious to your signal chain . . . you got the right amount of twang and breakup in there.
DrRussPhd Just straight into a Peavey Vypyr 100 with some digital effects built in. But the Schecter pickups have some nice bite to them.
bless your soul
Was just listening to the Brussels Affair yesterday and that version so good.

Awesomeeeee
Hi. Love your videos. I'm wondering what is your amp and pedal set up ito get that awesome sound?
Nice!
Montreaux 1972
Thanks!!!!!!
Guy’s the best
Is this one easy or am I getting better, thanks JJ. still the best instructor out there
Could be both.
That looks like the Who's final show (1982 Toronto) Schecter. You are so upstate New York with that HOG T-Shirt.
Fantastic!!! Have you ever heard the Johnny Copeland version? You should check it out.
Hey Mr JJ, Have you ever figured out Waddy's standard tune version that he did with Linda Ronstadt? Or is it standard, I watched and he has no Capo, sounds like maybe D I dunno
xoxo jj thanks

JJ~ Is it wrong I wanna play this song for hours on end?
No. It is wrong to not want to play it!
Tumbling Dice is my favourite Stones’ song, but it’s never played properly live. It’s always either too fast or too slow.
probably the only song I would play with a Tele exactly like Keith's if I ever owned one... hate capos due to the damage they can do if guitar falls lands on back of neck. . causes 2 lil marks/vertical scares you can feel while playing.. bought a used GLPC from GC with that lil undisclosed detail b4 purchase over the phone..
You write this as if you drop the guitar all the time...😕
hi James James love. how are you ? yeah ? lovely. I leave one of my guitars constantly tuned to open E. is that sensible ? or will I find the headstock just snapped off one day ? let me know. Cheer's, Chris.
I doubt it, but it's probably best to loosen the tension when it's in the case.
Thanks James. Great lesson and a great song. Are you able to post a link to the version you play along with? Is it from "Ladies and Gentlemen The Rolling Stones" movie
Serious question: Do you speak English?
James James yes
From Australia
Nice work, so that’s in B with the capo at the third, right? 💀🔥
kakkoii !!=So cool !

japanese
Hi James, I really enjoy your channel and now I'm looking to buy a capo. Which one will you recommend?
Thanks,
If you want one that will last for 20 years, spend $35 on one. Otherwise, they're all kind of the same to me.
How did you get the tone , guitar an amp or are you using a pedal ?
Through a Peavey Vypyr 100.
beautiful guitar
What brand is you guitar?
Schecter
Evidently you don’t need to, but have you ever considered removing the low E string for open G playing? Do you think it would be helpful for more aggressive type playing?
It's probably easier to tune it up to G than to remove it. But I normally leave it tuned to E and just ignore it.
Nice video plus who is the guy in your channel picture?
Nigel Tufnell (Christopher Guest) from Spinal Tap
That's a nice guit James James, what's the make and model on that one?
Schecter Pete Townshend.
I've got one of those! Same gold top, but mine has a rosewood fingerboard. It's a good guitar. It's been languishing in back of the closet for a long time. I need to put it back into rotation!
isn't you can't always get what you want and open G as well anyway how many guitars do you have LOL
are you using a marshall?
Peavey Vypyr 100
What amp are you using?
Peavey Vypyr 100.
James James nice tone I’m looking into the blackstar silver line 100 watt head have you played through one?
0:20 you're in open G of course : )
Keith.
throw away string..#6

Is your Schecter scratched or dirty? Nice one.
+Robert Lane Scratched and dirty indeed!
