Things you don't know about this video: I still can't say parallel glider without sounding like I had 3 shots of vodka. Also: this video was originally SO LONG, I went in depth into every paper I've tried, plus tips on how to choose your paper size when you're doing a graphic novel (and why you should always go bigger in scale) but I thought "uhm maybe this is for another video?" haha
Thanks to Milanote for sponsoring this video! : .. ) Sign up for free and start your next creative project: milanote.com/franmeneses0624
but what if you said parallel glider 3 times in front of a mirror at night
I have the same issue with the word "explorer" The letter "l" next to the letter "r" is completely unpronounceable for me 🙈🙉🙊
the parallel glider ghoul might appear ;;
I love that Fran embraces that she's in the background usually, however tool videos are my favorite so I'm watching! Front and center. ❤
Fran -- I'm not sure if you'll see this, but a note about the brush pen (or anything that uses cartridges): You can refill those. JetPens and Goulet have syringes that are used for cleaning fountain pens, but you can use any fountain-pen friendly ink in them, and carefully refill cartridges, too. I use a pentel brush pen for almost everything, and I've never bought a cartridge -- I just refill the one that came with it, which I washed out in the sink, and replaced with Carbon Black ink, since it's waterproof. Less expensive that way, and less plastic in the landfill. I've also refilled other pens - as long as they have a cartridge, you can refill it. Just make sure the ink is fountain pen friendly, as india inks will dry in the pen and make it unusable.
Carbon Black and Diamine's document black are ones I've tried (prefer the CB), and Rohrer & Klingner's SKETCH series work too. (I found that series' black to be a little greyer, but it dries super fast, and comes in some interesting colors, all waterproof.)
Not that any of this will help you now that your project has started and you need consistency, but for the next one, it's something to keep in mind. :D
There are also some cartridges that are refillable with a little pump.
Hey Fran,
Ticonderoga pencils are named after Ticonderoga, New York. Dixon Ticonderoga was founded in 1827. Ticonderoga (the town) had graphite mines, hence the name! Ticonderoga is an Iroquis word meaning "between the two waters," and the town rests between two lakes!
I don't even draw but I still enjoy Frans content so much 😍 I can however completely relate to loving stationary 😂
I was just rewatching an older video of you sharing your current fave supplies. I love these kinds of videos. They keep me company while I work and I just love to see what other artists are using. I say I'm curious but it may be bordering nosy. I just love to know and see how different people use things differently!
haha sameee! I love videos that keep me company while I do other things
Fran….please please please do vlogs again!!! Seeing you live day to day life, cat cuddles, adventures…is so enjoyable. It’s what got me into vlogging. Please vlog again!!! ❤️🙏
Ticonderoga was the MVP of pencils in grade school (before mechanical pencils started becoming popular.) I’m glad they’ve made a comeback in the art community.
the dust brush rec is actually so real (21:14). as a piggyback recommendation- my figure drawing professor used a suction bulb on our charcoal drawings since it blows air onto the drawing w/o the worry of spit lol
i don't even know how to draw i just love listening to fran
same. the moment she started explaining about the different paper types, I was like: yes, I'm here, tell me about the paper types because I know nothing
I love following your grapic novel process. we are all rooting for you!
almost ended my daily sketchbook page with this video, thanks you for keeping me company and good luck with the graphic novel ;)
As someone who only knows traditional tools (I have a tablet that I haven't learned yet 😅) The most recent purchase I have made was Lavander colored lead for my favorite mechanical pencil and its changed me a bit. It brought back my love a doodling and drawing more❤
I have been watching your videos forever and ever! I just read my first graphic novel on Thursday. I finished it super fast and I am in love. I read another one last night. I am super looking forward to reading yours!
Speaking of erasers, this is the eraser without the whole eraser waste: the MONO zero eraser. Love it so much
I love that this Kneaded Eraser in Polish is called gumka chlebowa - bread eraser :D
Te adoro Fran! Graciass siempre por tus videos💜
Yesss textures are everything! 🙏♥️
Watching your videos or even hearing them makes me feel at ease, thank you so much for making content!
This is exactly what I was looking for..thank you so much Fran..love your videos and work
I really enjoyed this video and always a pleasure hearing your insight about things. 💕
Also with the Kuretake brush pens (I’m sure all of them?) you should be able to get ahold of a Platinum piston converter if you want to be extra good for the environment and use ink from a bottle rather than the cartridges (or you can also always refill the cartridges with bottled ink with a syringe!). I really love my Kuretake brush pens.
This is exactly what I need! This summer I’m starting my comic
Fran have you read any good books lately, maybe a bookhaul? Miss your book content and your cozy home, your beautiful cat, your travels or just taking us along your errands or just taking it easy in your book nook or journaling i miss those videos💖☕🫖🥧🍵🕯📓📚🖋🫂

My RUclips has been on a roll lately! I'm so happy I found your channel. I'm also doing my comic traditionally, and the easle has been a game changer for me as well. Thank you for making such an in-depth video of all the tools you use. I love to see what else is out there. I look forward to following your graphic novel journey! ☺️
I just enjoyed so much listening to how Fran talks about erasers and paper
Very timely video. I just purchased an A3 size table top easel. It fits perfect on my work area after moving my keyboard.
This was the video I needed while I cleaned the kitchen today. Esp when you helped my telling me to look, thank you!
¡Me encantan tus videos, Fran! ❤
Love how excited you get about paper texture :) tradtional mediums are always felt by the eye imo...
Although I LOVE your vlogs and other content, and I don't even draw.. I SO love these chatty video's I feel inspired to be creative and am currently back to my abandons embroidery project, yey! Thanks fran I have been with you since you first moved to england, and I still love all of you
Hi, Fran! I really enjoyed this video! It's a blessing to see your process.
Thanks for sharing all this info and tips.
Thank you for the valuable information. I appreciate it.
YES ticonderoga my beloved, she can do it all!! also you read my mind fran, this video is just what i needed :-)
I LOVE using Ticonderoga pencils. It just feels so good. And the parallel ruler! YES!!! It’s a total game changer. I love kneaded erasers. I remember there being a scented kind when I was in middle school. I miss that. lol.
Gracias por todas las recomendaciones. :)
I love the purpleeeeee
Jajaj
Thank you thank you thank you!
When you told me to look at the screen I felt so seen. I was about to order more sushi and Fran was like “ LOOK”
in full transparency I swapped the plastic duster I had with Julian's nice wooden duster and he hasn't noticed since hahaha 👁👁 also yes to smelling paper!! I'm going to give a shot at milanote for creating a vision boards for products I want to manu~ love listening to your recs!
Besos y abrazos!
"the problem with flesh" so true, bestie
Holiiiis!
When I drew comics way back years ago (not as a professional, though I was published here and there in independent publications), I ALWAYS preferred the 4H pencil...yes, 4H. The point held up longer, it was easier and less messy to erase, and it allowed for drawing without any carbon dust accumulating or smearing on the Bristol board. When I drew from life at the Art Students League in Manhattan, I mostly used NuPastels or conte crayons, and graphite relatively seldom. (However, in reviewing my old life drawings, I see I did some nice drawings in graphite...probably 2H or HB pencils.
I went to like the video at the end of the video, then realised I'd already liked the video 😂💖
I've bought the Tombow eraser based on another one of your videos. One of the best art purchases I ever made. I've gifted them to other artists and it's always a favorite. Curious about that parallel glider now.
I literally just decided to start practicing comics and pen/ink drawing and bought some goodies this past weekend. Such great timing for this video! I got Strathmoore 300 series vellum based bristol and it's really nice smooth but subtly toothy it feels awesome. However I usually use microns or those firm tipped brush pens. Have not tried any dip pen or paint brush on it yet. Anyway thank you for this video because I can never stop splurging on supplies lol Also tombow tiny eraser is the best thing ever! Maybe it's considered mechanical eraser?
Thank you for sharing this! Do you have recommendations for digital screentones? I saw you use them in the past but I never found out where they were from 😅 thank you!!
I literally open RUclips to hang out with you 💙
Not me getting nervous and concerned that you wouldn’t mention the kneaded eraser 😂 I’m more passionate about erasers than I thought lol, I had to lean forward and my whole body was tense waiting anxiously for number 3 😂
hello fran! what procreate brush do you use for the grayscale?
Thanks, really interesting! I just startet drawing again, also the old way. Comic similiar catdrawings, so leading to my problem 😅 I'm really color scared... I spent so much time drawing and lining and I don't want to ruin it with wrong or ugly colors. Do you have any tips on how to get startet or whats the "best" kind of material? Thank you 😊
❤❤
I had an elementary school teacher who refused to let us use any pencil but Ticonderoga 🤣
Fran deberías dar un curso en Domestika!! :3
Fran!!!
❤
No dibujo pero disfruto ver tus videos
Do you make your comics on an iPad or leave it all on a sheet of paper?
I looove the video 💕🫰🤧🫶💗💝
Just curious what do you do with the paper that doesn't make the cut?... assuming you buying packs of paper..
Min 13: in italian we call it "gomma pane" 😊
❤analog sketching my ass off while listening to @FranMeneses ‘ sexyfull description of favorite art supplies 😅
I need to date more papers…
Happy accidents, accents of happiness ❤
When you talk about the "texture" of the paper for inking, do you mean the "tooth" of the paper? Like you need something to grip the ink as opposed to a smooth paper? Thank you for this video!
PENCIL SMELL FOREVER
Hello Fran, not related to the comic tools but what's the tripod you're using for your overhead recording ? thanks : )
oh it's this one! www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0C2TX65YN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_image?ie=UTF8&psc=1
@@FranMeneses Thanks : ))
A few weeks ago I was looking for a video that you talked about Milanote cause I didn’t remember the name of it and now here we are again ✨🤏🏻
I still have my horsehair (sorry, not vegan) dust brush from 1st year architecture school way back in 1983!
I’m pretty sure the Staedtler and Westcott brushes mentioned are both made of horsehair. At least the models available in the UK
9:45 😆😂
I am very much a beginner, so I love it when You are mansplaining 🙂
