it really is so good! i’ve been subscribed for i think 6 years? and never thought of unsubscribing because fran is such a delight and her podcast newsletter is amazing 💖💖 thank you fran!!
Hi Fran! Longtime follower, first time commenter. First off, thank you so much for sharing your work. I love watching these videos and seeing your process - it’s so generous for you to share the behind-the-scenes. Also, you definitely nailed the perspective in the end! It looks so good! A few tips, as someone who teaches drawing (specifically perspective): when you’re working with 2- or 3-point perspective, I’d recommend sketching on a much larger piece of paper so you can actually place the vanishing points. You can then sketch out the edges of the room and place the furniture, and either transfer or trace to your final sheet (or tape your paper to the larger sheet and just draw on top of it). It’s so hard to draw perspective like this without a specific reference, and having those vanishing points helps a lot! I actually have my students draw a project similar to this as a final assignment: draw a room where you include all four walls on a single sheet of paper. It’s a very challenging assignment and they all hate me until they see the final product. Anyhoo, hope that’s helpful and not too mansplain-y. Can’t wait to see the final book!
I am salivating over all these details!! 🤤 Thank you for sharing your journey, Fran ❤ I would literally wear a shirt..with just your illustration of the desk 😊..and the wiggly sock 🥹🥹🥹

Fran it's so good to see u again! :-) Don't worry about us, we love to see you growing and love to see how you go with graphic novel. It always makes my day to see you sketching and inking for your novel, it inspires me to keep doing my job as an illustrator, I hope one day I become as good as you ♡♡♡ Xoxo from Mexico :*
Art really does take time. I've let myself just exist with my project. I'm working on a webcomic and writing the script and its taken years but it has no timeline. Its been really fulfilling letting the story take its own organic shape without me constantly telling it what to do. I also loved how you drew the background and didn't freak out over perspective lines being perfect. That page has so much personality and character to it! I can't wait to buy it when its finished!
Just wanted to say that I have met so many artist over the years but very few of them are so skilled like Fran at traducing situations or even abstract concepts in such masterful way. The focus on the details is so rich that it makes the images flow naturally and is so moving! That's how pure art is supposed to make we feel
Fran, I’ve been following you since I was in middle school, you inspired me to study design and become an illustrator, I now have my college degree and am starting my career, tackling my own graphic novel and I can’t describe how much you sharing these parts of your life and work mean to me. Thanks for always teaching us, sharing with us and inspire us with your work! Greetings from México ✨🍊

I forgot how much I enjoyed your art vlogs. Thanks so much for this. Art does take time, and this has reminded me to take it slow and enjoy the process and the "mess ups"
Fran, thank you very much for your videos! I've been watching your channel for a while; sometimes I didn't watch a video as soon as it is available, but when I come back, I always feel really inspired by you! Thank you very much!
omg facing resistance when ur doing something challenging or that u don’t want to already 😩 so real and so good to see the process! Lately I saw something that said when you’re feeling resistance, try nodding your head yes to give your body the cue that you *can* do something, and it’s been helping me a lot :)
Given that you’re an artist, you’ve probably heard of this, but on the off chance that you haven’t, I just wanted to tell you about a special pencil that doesn’t show up on scans. I pulled mine out and it just says “Non photo blue pencil”. I don’t know if it would help, but you could always try drawing perspective lines with that and drawing your illustrations over the top (not having to worry about erasing the blue ones). I’m guessing you already know about this but wanted to share just in case🙂
Hi Fran! I love the inking part of your videos, I'd easily watch 30 min of you just inking hehe, i find it very relaxing and satisfying at the same time (even tho is not your fav part) i enjoy watching it. Hope you're enjoying the good weather as well❤ Where i live we're going through multiple heat waves but the ac is my savior 😅
Hi Fran, it is such a delightful experience to see how the graphic novel is coming along! Thank you for taking us with you on the journey :) i cant wait to be able to look at in a few months and see the progress! p.s. kind of unrelated but im happy to see how the auto-merge function in PS is a time saver! i will be starting a PhD project soon on automating biological research. My motivation is exactly what the auto-merge function does for you: saving time on technical stuff so that you can focus on creating art!! (or in my case: discovering fun new biological things :) )
I love this type of pages in graphic novels/mangas 💕 All the details tell you so much about the characters and finding little references or easter eggs is really fun! Thanks for sharing this process Fran.
Hiiii fellow artist here! If you're able to take a break from the novel, do that and take some classes in perspective. Once you understand it, you will not be as stressed about it anymore. Try taking classes from the online animation schools. My favorites have been Brainstorm school, Concept Design Academy and Project City. I used to be in animation storyboarding and those schools helped me get over my perspective hump too! I still struggle but not as hard!
Descubrí tu canal y me estoy jalando tus videos.
thanks for the insights, fran! and the photoshop tip! I was already thinking about a new scanner, but thanks to the photoshop tool I don't need one after all, thank you very much!
Love that you show this process!!! I am in the midst of painting out my own book,, so i do understand where you are coming from. Basically we do live inside our books for a while:) I do feel your pain, struggeling with your pages. Just keep on going! Good Luck!
Me and my friends have recently come together to start a silly little comic to pursue our passions in art and storytelling and (tbh) to just spend time together when so often we just don’t hv the time or energy, so it’s so fun and motivating to see someone else working on their own graphic story. Anyway, have a lovely day folks!
I started putting your videos in the background while I'm drawing. (hello there, dear fellow artist!) Your videos inspire me to do more "analog" art, with no undo button and sometimes a bit souless feel in it all.
The tip with photoshop is gold, how the hell I didn't knot that to this point?? I'm scanning my watercolors for like 4 years, and including uni for like 10 yearsor more? ..omg 🙈🤦♀🤦♀ I'll try right away, thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can't relate to this more. I have this big 11x14 painting in gouache planned and I only got as far as the sketch 90% done because even though my perspective is good, there's this part of it that suddenly gets more difficult and I got so discouraged because I thought I planned the drawing out enough.
Espero ayude. Mil gracias por compartir tus procesos e ideas y descubrimientos
Hej Fran. I just love all this content of you working on your graphic novel. I’m sitting at one myself and this is such a nice company 🧡 I completely understand your struggle with perspective. Maybe it would help, if you set up the camera ankle and scene digitally first with a CAD-program, like SketchUp, to build the perspective, use this as an underlying and then move on to pen and paper. Again looking forward to all the process. xxx

As a reader of graphic novels, I always enjoy seeing the small details and appreciate the time and effort that goes into creating brilliance.
