So let's do this experiment together: what happens if I do all the things on the "Things that inspire me" list? Would I feel like myself again? I know you'll feel better soon because you're working on it. And that's the only way :)

In my experience, when I find myself unmotivated and tired all the time -- and this happens a lot -- it's because I'm overwhelmed. So the mind tries to shut down, but you have work to do, so you can't shut down, but you really want to shut down. But I think the root cause is fear and anxiety. I get super-tired when I'm under time pressure, money pressure, security pressure. And it exhibits itself as a lack of motivation. It's similar to the process that major depressives go through, in my view.

Wow...thank you for sharing your experience. I'm reading through all the replies because I'm currently going through this "tiredness" now. But I'm still working on my webcomic because if I don't--who will? But yea...I think the fear and anxiety does manifest as demotivation and tiredness. It's like the mind is trying to protect itself...whew..the mind is so powerful.

Ann, I can only suggest what my therapist suggested to me: try to confront your fears. You don't have to do it all at once, but I think it helps to explore some of your fears. I have found that mindfulness training also helps. Best of luck with it Ann!

I like how you talked about how buying art supplies doesn't really do much, because I feel the same (and generally feel horrible about buying things I don't need). Instead I like to go to art stores and look at all the blank paper to get ideas, or to motivate myself to finish up sketchbooks so I can buy new ones. I tend to get more stuck when I feel like I don't have to skills to draw what I want to draw, so I find doing figure sketches works really well for gaining some of that confidence back. (Great Video Thanks!)

    Fran,
I'm stalking you on social media since a long time and I wanted to send a comment for the first time because I think it's important to say good things when you think them. I love your personality, your honesty, your way to be brave but also sweet, the way you are not afraid to talk about the different struggles you can have as an artist or in life in general.
My job is far from art (computer science engineering) but I've alway loved to draw, and watching your videos made me start again something that I forgot made me once feel so good. I even added color to my drawings because of you, watercolors to be exact.
Thank you so much for this, all of your videos make me want to go to my desk and draw and it's priceless.
    Keep being awesome!

Hey Fran! The way I deal with lack of motivation is that I light this one specific candle that I remember burning when I was going through an awesome, exciting creative time in my life. The smell of it brings me back to that day and reminds me why I'm in this industry/career path/hobby. What I also do when I'm in this situation is I turn my attention onto something else I'm interested in that has nothing to do with drawing. I do this especially after a client project because the work kind of cuts my creative appetite. So I let the drawing part of my mind relax a bit and do something else that inspires me so either playing an instrument, reading, movies.

I’m glad it’s not just me who has a drawer full of brand new sketchbooks! When i feel unmotivated i like to try and collage, using magazine cut outs and scraps of paper, this enables me to try new colour palettes as well as feeds my need to create something

I have you on in the background Fran whilst working but just wanted to pop on a say YES to walking around on your own with no music or podcasts! I have found that has been so good for me to be outside and explore the place in which I live, I've taken up sketching too as it forces me to sit and observe outside and be calm and early in the morning means there's hardly anyone about! (Just noticed that there are some beautiful buildings that would be awesome to sketch in your walk-about)

My best trick is going out and learning something new. I've realised that learning is something that fulfills me, and you can never stop learning enough. So whether it's improving on something or learning something entirely new, it's sort of an act of meditation that shakes up and challenges your brain. If anything, I can feel content at the end of the day that I've learned or grown in some way, even if just a tiny bit, step by step.

One thing that helps me is checking people I admire on instagram! I have somehow overcome the "I will never be this good" kind of thinking, and looking at other people creating cool stuff motivates me to try to do the same. When I’m feeling burned out and not creative, I go on a hike with my dog through the woods, no phone, no headphones, no watch or time limit. I also go to my local library and just wander and flip through books, maybe take one out, but I don’t force myself to have that goal. And the last thing I do is go to a new yoga class. I go regularly anyways, but if I’m super strung out, I will check out a special workshop or visiting teacher or new studio just for the day to get a new perspective and move my body in new ways.
Awesome video, as usual, I always look forward to your uploads 😸

"I don't wanna rely on the idea of new art supplies are going to change this situation in which I am right now, because they're not going to change it. It will be a temporary fix, like a temporary solution. So I wanna fight this until the end. And to be honest guys, I have so many sketchbooks."
I just had to quote these words of yours because I can relate to it 100%. I used to go to bookstores or art supplies stores, and then buy a new notebook, or a brush, or watercolors thinking that it would help me be "inspired", but I just end up with one container box of art materials that I have yet to consume. Hahaha! I guess sitting through the discomfort, and just continuing on drawing and doing simple practice can help a lot. Thank you so much for letting us be a part of this journey!

organize my studio, listen to records, watch art documentaries (anything w/ Banksy or Marina Abramovic for me), watch the 'Work of Art' reality tv show (it's on RUclips!), watch other movies that inspire me (anything from Wes Anderson, Marie Antoinette, Amadeus, or Coraline), clean my paintbrushes and sharpen all of my colored pencils, destroy something in my sketchbook and try to make something new on top of whatever I destroyed, paint or draw a pattern over and over and over again, drink & draw (hello, wine!), and last but not least - do NOTHING until inspiration strikes again! xoxo

Thank you for doing videos like this. I hope you feel better. You seem to be on the right path (if I can say that from the outside).
It's hard to see someone struggeling. But it's also more relatable than only seeing someone thrive all the time. Everyone has ups and downs. But when we only see these polished social media feeds we compare our struggles to the curated perfection and feel like a failure in life.
I also find it helpful to see your strategy of getting over feeling unmotivated as an artist.
You put this plan to action of all the things you know will make you get better. And you still produce work although you might not feel like it. Those actions are so important.
You are a great role model to me! Rock on, Fran

When I need a boost of motivation I usually take a break and pick a different artistic hobby; I'm an illustrator but I also like making jewelry and paper craft. It satisfies the feeling of wanting to create something.

Thank you for your being honest and sharing your thoughts and feelings with us and also your strategies to water your inner plant , they are so helpful to get back on track. You are very inspiring and uplifting, it's as if I were talking to a good friend. If I'm out of tune with myself I am the kind of person that needs to hang out with good friends and have a good chat, and also even though I might be tired I love to go swing dancing, especially Lindy Hop, it's so joyful and it totally frees my mind of all my thoughts. Intense activities where I need all my concentration help me a lot to free my mind.. Take a good rest and get well soon, dear Fran!

Thank you for sharing this!!! When I feel unmotivated/uninspired, I like to switch to another hobby...like writing or playing music...or cooking something really fancy. I also like to go to the theater/ballet/concert to see something live. If I'm feeling really down with my creativity, I get together with my friends and try to collaborate on something. I love being an artist but it can be very lonely! Sometimes the loneliness brings great work, and sometimes it can drain creativity away. But we are lucky to have such a strong art community and people like you bringing us great and honest videos! Your RUclips family is always here for you because you are always here for us :)

I love you, Fran! Your beautiful videos always resonate with me. I'm kind of experiencing the same thing as you recently. And my BEST advice is...go out into nature. Going to a park or garden, for me, is so rejuvenating. There is something about going out and hearing the sounds of nature...being surrounded by all these living things with no expectations or obligations we humans are weighted down by. That peace and freedom they experience restores me. Hopefully that makes sense!

I can hear you all day long! I can relate so much with you right now. And I'm not even an artist. I guess when we are done with a big project, in your case the planner, we enter on a state of mind that is not the ideal. And I think it's normal to feel like this. Naturally over time we will adjusting our mind to go back to work again, without the need of another big project to replace the last one. Good Luck! And a big hug from Brazil.

I love going to libraries or bookstores when I’m unmotivated or stressed. To be honest I love judging books by their cover lol. The art on covers makes me happy. Kids books are especially wonderful. I feel it takes a lot of creativity and happiness to make a kids book. Being in a bookstore also forces me to do homework when I don’t feel productive. It’s like, “You’re already here so might as well get some work done.” But it’s also an amazing place to just explore and learn new things. I want to design and build a tree house someday and it’s partly because of the wonderful books I have seen on my “explorations”. Sadly I’m not at a point in my life where my hobbies are my number one priority. But I’m hoping that the little bits of knowledge I’ve being collecting over the years will help me when it can be number one. I hope you get better Fran :) and I always appreciate your honesty in videos. You and Holly both do a great job of being open with us and it inspires me to be honest with myself.

This is a super useful video for me right now. Thank you Fran!
I also really like reading through everyone else's lists.
One thing that really helps me is a studio ghibli cleaning montage! I tie my hair up, put an apron on and hack away at some dirt or mess and it makes me feel a little better.

I felt the same so many times and my trick is this. I say to myself: I am not just an illustrator. I am so much more. I am also a nice person, a friend, a nature lover, a gourmet and a lot of things what makes me how I am. It helps to feel a little distance between my work and my soul because it's not the same. My soul is just the source of creating.
The hardest thing to be an artist that we totally determine ourself with our work and results. Take a few days to enjoy your hobbies :) Make yourself happy with simple things. Don't push yourself to make or work. You are lovely person but not only Fran, the illustrator. You can be anything you want to be. The art is just one of your favourite hobby. :))) It will be easier this way!

Your work ethic and artistic courage inspire me so so much! My best remedy for feeling whole again is taking long walks in the nature / city. Another one is creating something outside of your main medium just for fun (I'm a writer - so I try to paint or play music, do photography, etc..). ❤️

YES. Thank you for this. I’m currently on sick leave after having my second surgery in regard to endometriosis and for so many months now due to feeling so unwell my motivation levels have been at zero no matter how inspired I get from things around me. It’s oddly nice to know other people are going through the same stuff as you and that it’s okay

I am so appreciative of the advice about buying new supplies. Someone needed to say it! I've learned that the hard way. New supplies does not = New You or Instant Solutions

Jasmine Harvey I couldn't agree more. I've been guilty of this very thing many, many times. Then I get home, and wander around / feel tired and nothing happens. I now feel guilty because of all the $spent & I have piles of unused sketchbooks & supplies and am still stuck.... it's a vicious cycle, but now I've managed to curb it quite a bit

    • @xXxDrowningDollxXx
      @xXxDrowningDollxXx 6 лет назад

Ellen M I completely understand that stuck feeling. I've found that doing "artist hoards" I think it's called, and going through the supplies you do have to do some simple easy projects, gets me back in the groove. I try to accept that what I make may not be perfect or "sellable" but it's mine and I made it. I try going back to what I know I do well. Even if it's like drawing shapes or studies

You're one of the fixes for when I'm not motivated to create ♡ I put your let's draw something videos on loop in the background and just see where things go ~
I've got deadlines coming up, I'm behind on my work and the one thing I could do without right now is being uninspired with who I am as an artist. I'm redoing my second year of university because of personal difficulties from last year. Now I'm at the same point in time where things got tough for me, and all I feel is "but you have no reason to feel this crappy, nothing bad has happened. Life is good now." So I've given myself this unrealistic expectation on how things "SHOULD BE"... rather than telling myself "we all have our struggles. I'm not the only one. I've just got to persist and push through this, and take care of myself."
Your video couldn't have been any more perfect timing, thankyou Fran x
