It's been over 20 years since I performed this in school, and it still has the same effect on me. Goosebumps and a lump in my throat. It's an emotional number. Crowds love it!
My 8th grade band performed this. It is considered by various directors as our greatest triumph. I am thankful to whomever posted this beautiful piece. It brings back wonderful memories. :-) Bravo to the band that performed this!
i love this song! i had the clarinet solo and we played eith the lights turned off with only stand lights so all you could see were our fingers moving! and the director wore white gloves....it was so awesome
I'm playing this with my school's Senior Band. CBC News is going to be filming bits of it and other songs we're playing on the 22 of september. Can't wait, we're going to be on TV!
Very nice! Played this with two other high school bands, and i must say nothing beats a full percussion section with 2 bass drums and tmpani all being wailed on for the drum beat!
the scream is EPIC I love this song, performed this tonight! ur band is really enthusiastic with the AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! at the end, NICEEE Also i like the people with the props!
Great job! This brought back a lot of memories. I played the clarinet and played this piece as part of a WIBC seminar in the late '80's or early '90's. We played it very similarly to how you performed it :)
Just wanted to say that my eighth grade band played this at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania and it is an amazing song. We were awarded first place overall middle school band.
EXCELLENTLY DONE. My band was supposed to play this, but everyone was being immature, so we dropped it. ): But NICELY DONE. If my teacher had found this earlier, I bet everyone would have been set straight!
wow you guys that was soooo awesome. i mean really, and i bet alot of you have heart attacks when the first big hit of the bass drum is played, i know i did haha. but really great transitions and dynamics. now i'm not band Expert, but i do know that that was goood.
We played this piece for our high school marching band half-time show for our high school band's 25th anniversary. It was amazing! We had to alter some of the piece to work for a marching show, (i.e. not so much of the pit in the beginning). We had Indian uniforms made and everywhere we went, people laughed, until they heard us play. We dedicated it to the Indian nation, and saw some peolple cry after our show. Would love to do it again.
I love this song! My grade 9 band is planning to do this for festival and we just got it! Honestly, I don't think we're ready for this kind of piece, but it sounds soooo good! Hopefully we will get this done great like you guys :D I play the Bass Clarinet along with my friend, so we hope to rock this piece!
I like your interpretation on this, especially on the vocals part. In our band, we didn't really like scream/yell at the end like you guys, but I think it's much better how you did that because the point of this story is to reflect on these indigenous people and there's a volcano!
We are playing this piece this year in my school band program, i'm a flute... I play the high notes in it, damn i can already feel the headaches for it :)
My band is also playing this song. I am wondering where the ocarana is though... I enjoy the clarinet solo, but I think that the band could be more blended to sound more balenced in the begining. Some parts they were slightly off tempo, but they quicky got it back and I love way you play your accents! Incredibal! Nice attacks and the drum is very nice! Voice is pretty good concidering it's band kids playing it ;) I might be wrong with some stuff and it might just be the slight echo in the room..
@goglemetoo pretty sure mazama was where they hosted the roman "olympics." And they would use Roman instruments to play a version of this song. And as you probably guessed they had torches and fires at the olympics so ya. But i think that they put the fires in special handles so to represent the start or end of their "olympics."
as 05bryan10 said "Apparently Mazama's about a volcano that erupted and is a tribute to the mazama indians of the pacific Northwest" on the score it goes in to alot more detail on what its about and if i can get a copy, i'll add it to the about me :)
The part one and two clarinet part in this is so hard because it alternates and it is near impossible not to merge, I am grade 4 - 5 and am playing this in a music makers course. I would highly recommend this course for music lovers see .musicmakers.co.uk for more info.
lol i understand it was like 8:41 minutes long for the actuall song i have recoded but nice job considering yall were performing in a halled structure :D
wahts wrong with the percussioon being loud lol ;) the louder the better i say! nah it was a wee bit on the loud side but it was still a good performance :D
We played this in middle School. Percussion is supposed to be "loud" , soft chanting... To know the Mazama story helps. Still my all-time favorite number I've ever performed as a student.
And I remembered being bored with this sing, yet now I find it beautiful.
This brings back so many wonderful memories playing this back in Jr. High. Excellent song. So long ago now!
Played this song back in 2000 for our Canada-Cuba trip. Love it!!
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!! our band's playing it for our winter concert and I absolutely LOVE IT
Awesome. Played this in 7th grade. Memories.
Aww.. We played this my senior year (2010!) and we loved it!
It's been over 20 years since I performed this in school, and it still has the same effect on me. Goosebumps and a lump in my throat. It's an emotional number. Crowds love it!
might want to check that lump out just to be safe
we played this at our high school district parade of bands. it was a show stopper. we got a standing ovation.

My brother played the Clarinet in this, and I got the opportunity to watch this live! It was amazing!
i was a member of that band for years had to give it up for work :(!

i just came back from my cousins middle school band concert and he played it!
Very nice! Played this with two other high school bands, and i must say nothing beats a full percussion section with 2 bass drums and tmpani all being wailed on for the drum beat!

I just got back from performing at an All-District performance and we played this song. Very fun piece! (Timpani)
Best performance of the song on RUclips. :)
By the by, I love the horn and low voices' part in this song. It just fit very well after the first clarient/flute melody. :D
Great job! This brought back a lot of memories. I played the clarinet and played this piece as part of a WIBC seminar in the late '80's or early '90's. We played it very similarly to how you performed it :)
Awesome song
The high schoolers came to my campus and learned this song in two days at the PRCC clinic, they did a pretty good job!
Glendale SS in Hamilton Ont, Canada...circa 1987 when we played it...1st French Horn player here....loved this piece
My all time favorite piece when I was a student! And it's such a crowd pleaser!
Just wanted to say that my eighth grade band played this at Hershey Park in Pennsylvania and it is an amazing song. We were awarded first place overall middle school band.
My Jr High band performed this as well(over 20 yrs ago), it's a crowd pleaser, and definitely a great competition piece.
EXCELLENTLY DONE. My band was supposed to play this, but everyone was being immature, so we dropped it. ): But NICELY DONE. If my teacher had found this earlier, I bet everyone would have been set straight!

i play the toms on this song right now. Its so epic on percussion stuff

It has been maybe 5 years since I've played or even heard this song. Even though, fingers kept moving along as if nothing :)
We are playing this piece this year in my school band program, i'm a flute... I play the high notes in it, damn i can already feel the headaches for it :)
SUPPORT!!!!

@RCMS74
Is a very fun piece! Was a while ago i played in this, Would love to play it again!
My all-time favorite piece I ever performed as a student!
Best. TImpani part. Ever.
My band is also playing this song. I am wondering where the ocarana is though... I enjoy the clarinet solo, but I think that the band could be more blended to sound more balenced in the begining. We're only doing the first two movements of our song as Mazama, then movement three is Shadow Rituals by Michael Markowski.
thanks, I was playing lute in this =)
yay i've been there last year O.o
I played this!! Me and my friend did the clarinet solo.
we scared quite a few people with the drums in the beginning lol
@goglemetoo pretty sure mazama was where they hosted the roman "olympics." And they would use Roman instruments to play a version of this song. And as you probably guessed they had torches and fires at the olympics so ya. But i think that they put the fires in special handles so to represent the start or end of their "olympics."
There's something so regal about 6:22. And the rest of the piece!
aww we played this in grade 9
My band is also playing this song but we only have like 20 people in our school band :P go tenors!

@chrispy199 i wouldnt be embarrassed. there is a wonderful story as to why you should actually take pride in it.
hey i played flute in this well done to us :D
The part one and two clarinet part in this is so hard because it alternates and it is near impossible not to merge, I am grade 4 - 5 and am playing this in a music makers course. I would highly recommend this course for music lovers see .musicmakers.co.uk for more info.
yeah good point we did,
beutiaful building
you guys used more than one ocarina? sounds so freakin spooky I love it! Im the only person playing it in my group whilst switching between a flute.
can someone from this band tell me how many people are on first trumpet
i play timpani on this song and i love being able to hit the drum really hard cause it gets rid of all my stress =D
added info on the piece to the about me!
omg we're playing this lol
hey i am playing this song at my high school and i am playing the ocarina pitch. Do you guys know what pitch the ocarina is?
how are you marching this? that sounds like it would be really cool, but a bit long. I did this for concert season last year.
were playin this at my school. kinda embarrassed to say the whole AIII EE OHHH part buthahhaha it will be fun
sorry i wrote that pretty badly. i am playing the ocarina for my high school and do you know what pitch the ocarina plays in this song?
lol i understand it was like 8:41 minutes long for the actuall song i have recoded but nice job considering yall were performing in a halled structure :D
Wicked :)
what do you mean by pitch?
il let you know if i can find out! :)
Chris is my brother!
At my school, the 9th graders (me) are playing it... i play 3rd clarinet!!!
@jacklino3 thankyou haha :)
i fucking love this piece.
played it in 8th grade :D
Playing toms
our 6th 7th iam in 7th and our 8th is playing this
2:48
i meant flute
The percussion was loud, but not too loud. I swear, though, for a second, I thought I heard a gunshot O.o;
なんとかなんとかって描いてありました(~_~;)
nah it wasnt to fast, but then i might be biased ;)
wahts wrong with the percussioon being loud lol ;)
the louder the better i say!
nah it was a wee bit on the loud side but it was still a good performance :D
We played this in middle School. Percussion is supposed to be "loud" , soft chanting... To know the Mazama story helps. Still my all-time favorite number I've ever performed as a student.
hahah same here
starts at 55 seconds, lol ;)
a gun shot ey? haha who got shot?
I really think you rushed this, and I also think the percussion is playing way too loudly. I could barely hear the brass from that.
that's the best part of the piece
Those are the appropriate Dynamics for percussion in this piece.
SHIT!
