The high school band I play in is giving this a whirl, and it's just a blast. I love our tuba section and all, but until I heard this, I had no idea there was that little tuba lick in the very beginning. Holy crap, they need to go to town on that part. It's the bee's knees.
didnt play tuba, but I played the double bass, which took the tuba part, and it was easily the best and most fun song ive ever played in high school band
As a euphonium player, it's always nice to get a mixture of the melody, harmony and bass line since the range of our instrument is amazing :) But honestly, the second movement gives me chills down my spine because do how it's so melodic and how the instrumentalist has brought it to life, the oboe especially was amazing as his or her notes were very clear and beautiful. All four movements are different but with good reason :)
The tambourine part is stunningly fun to play in this piece, particularly in the first movement. You carry the entire tempo change on your back. Great piece, definitely a favorite of mine.
Playing this in senior band and I am in love with all 4 movements. It's just so much fun to have a bassoon part that is something other than half or whole notes.
Though not the most difficult piece I've played, as an avid euphonium player I have to say that this is one of my favorite songs. Great mixture of high and low voices and the way Van der Roost maintains the original theme throughout is awesome. I can't decide which movement is my favorite...
As a fellow Euphonium player (also coincidentally a fellow Stephen 🤭) I'm 100% in agreement with you. Played this in college and it's always been in my playlists
1st clarinet reppin, one of the most enjoyable pieces I've ever played. Fun part from the very beginning. My other first clarinet buddy squeaked in the clarinet solo, in concert. Good times.
Umm...first horn! Within the horn section of our band (a grand total of two) the word Puszta has come to mean "I'm extremely happy and I'm feeling epic, but my face is dead." We've played the song a grand total of once...love at first note.
Horn part in the end of the 3rd movement changed my life, not so much emphasized in this version but when we played it... always blew me away. Favorite piece ever.
damn i had to sight read the piccolo solo in rehearsal once. failed miserably and embarassingly. me and my friends died laughing about it afterwards though.
One of the most fun pieces I've ever played... our conductor was jumping aroundon stage during our honor band concert. So much fun. - clarinet player:)
this is my fave song currently. in the beginning of the year I couldn't play anything, but now I'm improving and i can't wait to perform it for kiwanis
I played this about 20 years ago in All County band (small county). The difference was my director instead opted to play the 3rd, 2nd and 4th movements, in that order and no 1st movement at all.
I remember playing this song in District last year- Really fun and beautiful! Only problem is getting those hella fast flute fingerings down. @1st movement
I played E flat Clarinet for this in high school. It was a bitch and it loved every minute of it because by the time performance came my practice payed off. I sounded like this here recording❤
My band FaceTimed Mr. Roost and played for him to receive feedback on how he wants it to be played. Very humble and wholesome man with many great ideas, we were very lucky to get his critic.
Yeah, I play alto sax. We played this in my freshman year; it was one of the first pieces I got to play that was pretty sophisticated (I remember thinking "alright! Music!"). I found it fun to play. We saxophone players were rather fond of the E to low B part (third or fourth movement, though it escapes me which--by listening now I am inclined to say fourth). It was just hilariously awkward.
Played 2nd trombone in state band in 8th grade (was really mad I couldn't play first haha). I knew this song was amazing and super fun to play, but I had forgotten how most of it went. Brings back good memories this is such a work of art!
I play first trombone for all movements, and I believe that this part has been the most fun part on trombone i've played in concert band for my high school. I am a senior. It's also awesome when we show up the trumpets in movement 3. This might be one of my favourite pieces to play of all time along with The stars and stripes forever and Jupiter from the planets.
excellent performance. we played this with our brass orchestra in Germany some years ago, it was difficult but also great fun playing it. and it was a great success, the audience loved it.

I love how the flutes panic when they see this
Let me guess, you play a low brass instrument.
I received this piece and pretty much passed out
Please stop, I can't even explain how my section looked when we got this. Lots of wide eyes, for a very long time

I have to say 3rd and 4th movements where my favorite just because of how upbeat they where and because i got to beat the crap out of the cymbals :)
The tambourine part is stunningly fun to play in this piece, particularly in the first movement. You carry the entire tempo change on your back. Great piece, definitely a favorite of mine.

This is a very, very good performance. And such an excellent arrangement for the woodwinds! Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra is a treasure.
Umm...first horn! Within the horn section of our band (a grand total of two) the word Puszta has come to mean "I'm extremely happy and I'm feeling epic, but my face is dead." We've played the song a grand total of once...love at first note.
i know this is a bit late, but I am a freshman playing 2nd horn for this song and it’s an amazing song to play!
Amazing lower brass and Barry sax, you can hear everything. Well balanced! Played this song during high school, brought back awesome memories👍🏼
I play tuba in a AA highschool and this song was easily my favorite

2nd alto here, played this in 2013 and absolutely fell in love with it, especially the 1st movement.
Playing 1st oboe on this piece is awesome! Especially the 2nd movement :D
Yes!!!
Tambourine's a bitch. Not too difficult, but fingers can hurt after a while.
You know it man... But when your in seventh grade and didn't learn how to play it, it gets tough:/
Aaron you don't even play that part
Abigail Stewart he's right though. I don't play the part, but I do have the music for it. Hurts like a bitch.
Horn part in the end of the 3rd movement changed my life, not so much emphasized in this version but when we played it... always blew me away. Favorite piece ever.
the french horn parts are the best, period
I hate it when they are doubled by saxophones
@@alancressie9822 yep, but the saxes probably hate it too
Played string bass for this in my high school wind ensemble and it was a blast. One of the few songs I wasn't just doubling the tuba part!
Hayley recommended this to me you better give her a million dollars now
You heard me.

Played this in nursery school on twelve instruments. Got first chair in the Philharmonic.
Loved playing first trombone for this song in college!
It's cool how everyone comments what instrument they played this song on. I also love playing this song on trombone
Also a trombone! I have second part tho

I performed this on tuba with the 2022 Florida All-State Concert Band!!
Why isn't there any video, HD-compilation of this marvelous wind orchestra?
One of the few pieces that effectively make use of different tuba parts.
I´m playing the 1st Solo Flute and the Picc in this piece. It´s so much fun! I really love it! The IV movement is absolutely amazing!
i loved playing this on bass trombone and playing the tuba part, being able to play with the tuba section is always fun

@Ellis Jacobs Indeed, GO OBOES!
I'll never forget the 80 bar rest in the 3rd trumpet part in the 2nd movement. I'd always lose count and miss my entry
Its hungarian if anyone wanted to know
It's inspired by Hungarian music, but the composer is Belgian. My (Hungarian) band played this at a Belgian international festival. :)
i absolutely love this song! and its really fun to play....and this is coming from a tuba player!

playing this for my schools spring concert. so excited to get the 1st chair clarinet part under my fingers
I was first trumpet on this, I got the solo in movement ii and this is by far my favorite piece I’ve ever played in band.

played timpani for this my senior year of high school, best piece out of my 4 years

The very beginning of the first movement sounds like something out of skyrim.
gotta love those chords

The best part of this piece is the first half of movement three!
