    This is why the idea of Cultural Appropriation makes me so crazy.
    American composer with ancestry from Hong Kong, language and melody from Uganda, played on instruments from the Western European tradition and sung by a mixed group of singers that are just happy to produce beauty.
    It doesn't matter where it all comes from. It pulls together in an incredible piece that EVERYONE EVERWHERE enjoys. It takes the best from all these places and brings something to the Earth that is uplifting, rejuvenating, and glorious. Thank you for your talent Christopher Tin! I teach middle-high school choir and show this to my students as inspiration on what kinds of sounds are possible.

    • @JustDuck82
      @JustDuck82 29 дней назад +16

      Cultural appropriation is taking something from a culture different than your own and not giving credit and not being respectful. This piece is the exact opposite; this is cultural appreciation at its finest.

    • @enablechaos6344
      @enablechaos6344 28 дней назад +5

      @@JustDuck82agreed!!!! when you include the actual PEOPLE in the creative process you engage with different cultures and bring it all into one creative venture... if the entire creative venture is using cultural material without actually meaningfully engaging with the people that MAKE that culture, THAT'S appropriating another culture... but all in all, the point of thinking of issues like these isn't about bringing shame, as OP implies, it's about the importance of meaningfully including voices from different backgrounds in order to make something beatuiful :)

    That's my mother language. Luo is a sweet language. A month ago this song was performed at cultural festival in Lira, a city in Northern Uganda by a group of beauty queens contesting for Miss Lango. It was sweet to hear it from home. Lango are among the Native speakers of Luo the language in the song.

      It's so wild to me how I just don't know this language at all. There's a dialect/language in my small country of the Netherlands that has about 400.000 speakers (Frisian). Welsh has about 540.000, Scottish about 1.5 million, which is about the same as Luo. I never knew it existed before 5 minutes ago. Nor the huge amount of history it must have, or the culture of all it's people. It is such a beautiful language indeed, and I'm very grateful that I got to hear this.

The longing for rain, the calm before the storm, the disappointment when the expected rains don't eventuate, the joy when they do, and the satisfaction of a good crop realised. Nobody asked, but in no particular order, these are things I love about being able to watch this performance:
    1. The soloists are incredible - the power in their voices really shines and that bit at the climax where they sing simultaneously for the first time is SO good! They blend so well, and clearly make a great team.
    2. The little exchanges and glances between the conductor and the soloists - you look like you're having so much fun in general but I love being able to see that you're about to bring in a soloist for their next bit by watching your eyeline and expressions.
    3. The percussionist who pops up with a new instrument every five minutes with a plain expression like it's nothing, in a way that kind of reminds me of a bugs bunny sketch? He's clearly very good at what he does, and I know percussionists generally do have to play multiple instruments in a piece, but this one in particular makes me smile.
