From the European premiere of 'The Drop that Contained the Sea' at 'The Music of Christopher Tin' concert, Cadogan Hall, London, July 19, 2016. Performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and featuring the Angel City Chorale, Prima Vocal Ensemble, and Lucis choirs. Soloists: Jimmer Bolden, Allie McNay. Commissioned by the Orchestra at St. Matthews, Pacific Palisades, CA. Sung in Lango, lyrics from a rainmaking litany.
Available to listen on all streaming and digital services. Vinyl for the original studio album (featuring the GRAMMY-winning Soweto Gospel Choir) is available at christophertin.com/store.html.
    Lyrics:
    Waloyo yamoni. (Waloyo.)
Wan wamito kot ochwe, oony akirok chutok
Oami! In, kot, alami ichwe. Ka i chwe, beber.
    Ka monwa olelo (ber)
    Ka atino oleo (ber)
    Ka awobi owero (ber)
    Ka adwong olelo (ber)
    Eryamita ka jigi jigi.
    Eryam, alech alelech.
    Ka kot adok Burutok
    Ka yamo adok Burutok
    Ilech.
    Alech alelech.
    Ilech. Opong.
    Ilech i dula.
    Kalwa opong dero.
    English Translation:
We overcome this wind. (We overcome.)
We desire the rain to fall, that it be poured in showers quickly.
Ah! Thou rain, I adjure thee fall. If thou rainest, it is well.
If our women rejoice (it is well)
If the children rejoice (it is well)
If the young men sing (it is well)
If the aged rejoice (it is well)
    A drizzling confusion.
    Confusion, a torrent in flow.
If the rain veers to the south
If the wind veers to the south
    A torrent in flow.
    Overflowing. May it fill.
    An overflowing in the granary.
May our grain fill the granaries.

Welsh has about 540.000, Scottish about 1.5 million, which is about the same as Luo. I never knew it existed before 5 minutes ago. Nor the huge amount of history it must have, or the culture of all it's people. It is such a beautiful language indeed, and I'm very grateful that I got to hear this.

But once it's done, you'd better have a lot of good stuff already there. It's the case for this masterpiece trending on TikTok and Instagram Reels lately, and it's been the same for Ayushman the kid that sang "Lord I thank you for sunshine". Nobody asked, but in no particular order, these are things I love about being able to watch this performance:
    1. The soloists are incredible - the power in their voices really shines and that bit at the climax where they sing simultaneously for the first time is SO good! They blend so well, and clearly make a great team.
    2. The little exchanges and glances between the conductor and the soloists - you look like you're having so much fun in general but I love being able to see that you're about to bring in a soloist for their next bit by watching your eyeline and expressions.
    3. The percussionist who pops up with a new instrument every five minutes with a plain expression like it's nothing, in a way that kind of reminds me of a bugs bunny sketch? He's clearly very good at what he does, and I know percussionists generally do have to play multiple instruments in a piece, but this one in particular makes me smile.

It tightens the chest, it lifts your spirit, and it lets the tears flow like overburdened clouds over the continent where it all began. It is a masterpiece, nothing less. It restrains your fingers to restart it when it not yet finished. I thank who- or whatever posessed social media to show me this piece, to make my ear listen to such heartstring-playing composition, and to let me enjoy all those heavenly voices from those magnificent people. Thank you.

My wife and I are trying to have a child together through ivf. It has already been a difficult couple of years now which made me emotionally numb. Trying to stay strong for my wife whilest protecting myself from the struggles created a thick layer around my heart. Last week we had a miscariage and i couldn't cry anymore or have some other kind of emotion. Every now and then I come back to this masterpiece. It always manages to peel the layers away and frees my emotions. My own little desire the rain to fall. Beber.

I can't hold back a tear from dropping. Hearing a song from Uganda sang on such a platform by non Africans did it for me. I landed on it this morning on Facebook and completely fell in love with it. Four years was when it released and that's how long it took me a Ugandan to even hear it. I think our media houses need some serious lessons. Thanks for this piece Mr. Christopher. At least I can hear the language.

The art of conducting, the art of the orchestra, and everything encompassing it. That's something i can hardly put in to words. Something i pray school keeps in circulation, music. The ability to be able to bring this beautiful African language out in such a light and give it that extra layer of beauty through this masterful orchestra, it's astounding.
