Seeing Joel connect to Ellie, talking to her consistently, comparing her to his daughter, shows a lot of relationship growth. Although I haven’t played the games, this is a great show
There is a darker aspect to him comparing Sarah and Ellie, if you know why he's really doing it. Her reactions to that conversation say as much as well. They did great. I was a little worried about the final episode, but they pretty much nailed it.
@@tess5750 There are multiple things at play obviously - Joel never ever wanted to talk about Sarah before, but now he feels comfortable discussing her again with Ellie, which is a positive thing. He's volunteering information to Ellie about himself, which is again, a positive! On the flip side however... A large part of their relationship growth was Joel beginning to see her as an equal, and trusting her more. Through becoming a surrogate daughter, she's now being relegated to the status of "child" in his eyes, which is somewhat demeaning for Ellie. She's going from "someone I can trust" to "someone I have to protect" and Ellie doesn't want to be vulnerable, she doesn't want to NEED protection. There's also a slightly insidious element to the comparison to his first daughter. An easier comparison would be that of an ex-partner: imagine if you were dating someone who constantly said things like "You would've liked them!" "They were great, they had all these amazing qualities. you don't but they would've liked you anyway". It's somewhat similar here, that she's being compared to someone she cannot live up to, and is slightly uneasy for her. It's also A LOT of pressure for her to have to live up to his memory of his dead daughter... Incredibly nuanced and difficult situation!
At the start of the episode where you can hear a woman panting and grunting, I heard our ellie. After so many hours of hearing her in the games her voice was immediately recognisable. Ashley johnson really did birth Ellie😢It was so beautiful that she played ellies mother. This show really did my fav game justice. Thank you to everyone involved❤
yeah, it's been 10 years since the games came out, when it first came out i played it like 20 times for sure, then as years passed i played it here and there. but whenever i hear ashley, either in the show or she shows up on my feed somewhere online, my brain just goes ELLIEEEEE
It's ironic that Marlene had to kill her bestfriend Anna before she turns, and Ellie had to kill her bestfriend Riley the same way. It really goes full circle with these characters. That talk between Marlene and Ellie in the first episode is way deeper to me now. " Was Riley a terrorist? " There's no good and bad, only grey characters with each of their own motivations.
And that's the secret, isn't it? Respecting the source material While building On top of it, adding to it, and making changes where you Can, without ever Sacrificing what made it great.
@Nephetssings goes to show that it's way easier said than done. Having both Neil, who wrote the original piece, and Craig, who did Chernobyl (one of the Best mini series of all time) work together on the drafts for Every episode, and Both having a Unified vision of the story, probably also led to this ending. In most adaptations, there tends to be discord between the original writers, the studio, and the director...and those differences tend to ruin the adaptation. I guess...finally seeing it done right...probably just highlights how hard it is in actual practice. Kudos to the cast and crew. No matter what happens from here on out, they'll always have This to fall back on.
1. Ashley Johnson did GREAT. 2. The giraffe scene was absolutely necessary. 3. I'm happy that they didn't change much of anything. For example, Joel killing everyone including the doctor without a 2nd thought and 0 hesitation. 4. The showrunners did phenomenal because they allowed the story to speak for itself. The game was a masterpiece because of how it ended, and the discussion afterwards was just as interesting. 5. This is one of those stories you want to go into COMPLETELY blind. No SPOILERS and the less you know the better. 6. I can't wait to hear the reactions from everyone who didn't play the game. If I could experience this story again for the 1st time I would. 7.(Edit) It was also nice to see Merle Dandridge back as Marlene. She gives her take on the story in 'the making of' episode on HBO Max and it's SPOT ON. This story needed to be shared to people who would never pick up a controller.
I didn't play the game, got into show blindly but knew the hype of this adaptation coz of the success of the Game and I wasn't disappointed, loved every second of this Show, I wish I get to play the game someday
I didn't play the game and am glad I didn't. Would love to have memory erased after watching the show so that I could have the experience again. Watched the show because of Pedro, stayed because of Bella.
the one small change i liked was how nobody was shooting at joel and ellie as they were in the elevator. that means joel truly killed everyone there, other than the doctors he spared. it makes the scene much more chilling
@@alwayssssummerWell your in luck because the game is a masterpiece in every single right, and PlayStations are pretty cheap used. A PlayStation pro with a nice TV and part 1 and part 2 will scratch an itch you didn’t know you had. And if you aren’t well off at all, a used and cheap ps3 and the original last of us plus left behind dlc couldn’t be more than a $100 and it would let you experience the story. It’s worth it 120% to play the game.
@@taemcatboy It was haunting how they made Joel turn off his emotions and go into terminator mode and just massacre the entire team at the hospital. It was awesome and brutal and cruel all in one. The man who surrendered and was trembling in fear, the subsequent muffled and unflinching shot from Joel before reloading and continuing on, it was heavy.
the heartbreak in anna's voice when she says "her name is ellie" is really what broke me for that scene. she knows she's going to die, she's just given birth, she's exhausted, her best friend is witnessing her like this, and she's been bitten. she's never going to see her child grow up. her voice is shaking, it's breaking, she's trying not to cry. ashley johnson did a fantastic job, hands down.
It was beautiful. Joel, a broken man just learned to open up again, just learned to love again, just beginning to heal after not being able to save his daughter. After 20 years of misery, hopelessness, and void of emotion, he found love and purpose, only to be faced with losing it all again, to men with big guns. His love for Ellie and pain of losing his daughter was greater than all of mankind. And mankind could burn before he would let her die. A beautiful story of love and the power of fatherhood, and parents in general. And Ellie, choosing to believe Joel's lie, rather than truly believing him, because she too found love, purpose and family, with Joel, and maybe that's worth living for, to be loved that deeply. A beautiful, and complicated ending.
I didn't play the game, so when first watching the cold open, I didn't know that Anna was played by the voice actor of the OG Ellie. But the moment I saw her face, I thought "wow this actress looks like an older Bella Ramsey." I suddenly realized it was Ellie's mom, because Ashley and Bella genuinely look like they could be blood relatives. So it's not only a cool 'passing the torch' moment, but the casting couldn't have worked out more perfectly in terms of looking the part. What an incredibly serendipitous moment of storytelling
THIS. I didn't know Anna was Ashley from the game and thought, "well obviously this is Ellie's mom since she looks so similar. They probably went looking for women who look like Bella." Only to realize they picked her because she *was* Ellie!! It just shows the casting was meant to be.
OH MY GOSH YES!!! I haven't played the game and didn't know the significance of Ashley to TLoU. I was really impressed on how they made Ashley look so much like Bella. Like, if that's not perfect casting, then that makeup is very impressive. But setting aside the voice and beauty, the symbolism of their relationship on that scene was really beautiful. Like as what people have said, it was the passing of the torch from the original game to the adaptive series.
Did not see that coming! One of the most morally complicated story developments I've ever seen: choosing to save one person who you connect with only as replacement to a former lost loved one vs the rest of the human race you'll never meet. He feared she would in fact choose to sacrifice and "leave" him, and took the decision out of her hands. And by doing so, forever altered a relationship that was for the briefest of moments genuinely tender and sweet, but now hinges on a lie. You can tell she doesn't believe him and senses something is off.
One of the best video-game shows ever, if not, THE best video-game show. This show has set the bar for video-game adaptations. Can’t wait for Season 2 after all the foreshadowing.
Joel vs. Marlene in the parking lot, while he’s holding Ellie calls to how he has learned from his failure with Sarah. Perfectly mirrored situation with a different end result. He knows not to trust organizations to make decisions about who lives and dies.
This, ladies and gentlemen, is how to adapt a video game. What beautiful story. The writing, the casting, the directing, the practical effects, and everything else was on point. Many video game adaptations try to change the core of what the game was. The Last of Us keeps the core of the game while making changes that are either necessary for the media that they are using or were creative changes that worked with the show. Thank you to every member of the team for bringing this wonderful story to life.
Nah, it wasn't and will never be the case. This show is nothing but a political bs of cringefest. Glad this trash is finally done. Drunkmann can go away.
The Last of Us is now my FAVORITE show ever. The genius writing, riveting emotional plot, transcendent acting, insane practical effects, and visionary directing is all simply SUBLIME. Just pure back-to-back breath-taking episodes (that owe me therapy.)
Holy hyperbole Joel! Why do most comments here look like they are AI generated? The series is great but you all (if not actually bots) act like it's the best tv show in existence, when it won't be the best HBO show in 2023.
@@waynecanning4122 You being ready to trash my answer immediately even though you haven't heard it, makes you look like a gigantic loser. Not that you'd understand, but the answer is Succession and/or Barry.
So soon after the attempted violation Ellie suffered at the hands of David, where someone was almost able to force their will onto her, she now has to accept a very similar form of betrayal and removal of her autonomy from the person she's grown to love and trust. Such a wonderful, complex, bittersweet, totally human ending to this story. Masterful writing. Where you can love it, and/or hate it, but you always understand why each person does what they do.
I watched with my wife, who has not played the games. In the intro, where they show the woods, and you hear Anna breathing and running, even before you see her I KNEW it was Ashley because her voice is so iconic and so "Ellie". Normally this would be a distracting thing to do in an adaptation, because it's usually done as a cheeky cameo (think Stan Lee in all the Marvel films), but to have game Ellie give birth to series Ellie, but only as an emotional passing of the torch only fans will notice, is just pure genius. On top of that, the way they included as many performance capture cast so they didn't burn any bridges with the foundation of the series (the game) is just incredible.
The last words spoken by Craig here with tears in his eyes are beautiful. It shows so much how he is attached to this project since the beginning and the effort he has put on to make it the best as he could. Hats off to you, sir.
The scene from anna and marlene felt real because they really knew each other for a long time now as a VA in game. There's a lot of scenes here that I choked and cried, well done
Man this finale episode was awesome it was nearly IDENTICAL to the ending of the last of us part one seeing Joel be ruthless to save the one he loves was bittersweet knowing that him killing that one doctor is will have a consequence that will break everyones heart in season two
That moment when he kills them all, the subtle music they have given to it, takes it to a whole another level... Wonderfully executed, when Joel tells Elli about time didn't heal everything and that moment, that moment brings tears in your eyes...
I wanna see Ashley Johnson more on TV. Her acting in the brief time we saw her in the finale was so good, I wonder if maybe the Emmys should perhaps consider it an award contender.
This is exactly how you do a video game adaptation but still put your own twist into it without a doubt one of the greatest shows I’ve watched the way it was flimed was like watching a movie
@@JoeeBlazee it's a spoiler so scroll down at your own risk joel gets killed by the daughter of the surgon who joel shot. she was getting revenge basically.
As amazing as Pedro pascal and Bella Ramsey’s performances were, Ashley Johnson completely stole the show with the short amount of time she had. The way she said “her name is Ellie” was absolutely heartbreaking and says a thousand words. She’s such an underrated actress that deserves more roles on the big screen. Grew up with her on Ben 10 and very happy to see her career get bigger from there. And bravo HBO for one of the best adaptations we’ve gotten in years. Other studios and writers need to take notes, THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT. You can create new stuff that adds to the story such as the birth of Ellie, but you gotta keep the natural flow of the story and characters the same.
Ashley Johnson was FANTASTIC! Such a beautiful moment, a passing of the torch from OG Ellie to new Ellie. I hope to see her in more flashbacks in season 2, she absolutely killed it
Seeing Craig so emotional shows how much of a fan he is in the first place. No surprise how great the show turned out to be. And I agree, what elevates TLOU is its thought provoking ending. A seed that TLOU2 took even further. Can’t wait for season 2!
Bella has been shining in these past few episodes, but this show finished how it started, with Pedro bringing so much depth to an already immensely complex character. What a duo. What an adaptation. This show is a spectacle and the care it was shown is so palpable. I'm floored.
What a phenomenal episode. Every video game adaption should take notes, this is why it's so important to have the writer of the game directly involved with production. They hit every beat and punched me directly in the feels. I especially like how the end scene is exactly the same, it's such a hard hitting moment. 10/10 series
The finale was so raw, horrific, traumatic that I catch myself holding my breath most of the episode Well done HBO you restored our faith in video game adaptations 👏
I don`t know why but, Joel walking away in the hospital without Ellie was even more heart breaking in the series for me than in the game. It was great in the game too but, seeing like this in live action, you can actually feel the pain of just leaving behind someone you love knowing if you walk away in that point you`ll never gonna see that person again. It gave me chills.

What an amazing show. Even for us, that played the game countless times. Got myself holding my breath for some moments. This shows how powerful this story of tlou is. Congratulations to all the crew evolved on this!
I'm so happy they perfectly mimicked the game when they did Joel's monologue to Ellie in the car lying to her about what happened. I had hoped they would because it was cut perfectly in the game and definitely did not need to be changed.
I’m really happy you guys made this show happen. I honestly expected it to be mess like every other live adaptations of video games, but boy I was wrong. It just proves how in the proper hands, these shows and movies can live up to their predecessors. If only the Witcher and Halo series were in proper hands….
And now we also know that Laura Bailey - Part II's Abby - played one of the surgical nurses. Thank you Craig, Neil and everyone connected with this production for bringing something so important to me to a wider audience in such a beautiful and crafted way. I am so sad it's over but so happy it happened.
Loved loved LOVED the season finale episode. Hats off to Ashley Johnson bringing Ellies mom to life. The giraffe scene was touching, Joel killing all the fireflies. Thank you Craig and Neil for bringing part 1 of the game to life🤩
The way ellies mom, the unbelievable ashley johnson, the way she was holding the knife up to her own throat in case she turned before someone found her was heartbreaking. I'll never get over how hard the game hit. The way it immersed you in the way joel finds his closure in ellie, I don't think any dramatization can match that. You are joel. The series is great, but in its own way. And I'll always have the game, and now the series as well.
Listening to the podcast and these bits really show how much Craig Mazin and Neil Druckman, and everyone involved really cared about making this show so great. Thank you everyone
The season finale is peak perfection 💯 . The final shot between Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey is really good ( Great performances ) . The writing is phenomenal , and the scope is perfect .
I wish we would have seen more Infected when they went to that tunnel, just before going in the army tents area. Besides that beginning of this episode was a masterpiece.
The amount of tears that streamed down my face during this episode is not healthy. I just want to say thank you. Dear Craig, Thanks from the bottom my heart for doing justice to this beautiful story. It's definitely one of the best stories ever written, and probably the best story in the history of video games (well, that's my opinion). I played through the first game about 5 times. One of the best stories of my life. I would like to thank Craig Mazin, the crew, and the actors, for allowing us to see that masterpiece of such quality. This series couldn't have been any better, I'm so thankful I got to see it! Thank you!
In this episode especially, I love the way actors acted with their eyes. I read some criticisms about Pedro and Bella's acting, but I must say that they convinced me without a doubt, the moment when Joel tells Ellie about his suicide, trying to hide his tears, when Bella looks at Joel and makes him swear. And with TLOU I reckoned the power of cinema, because I can feel and understand the message that every camera's move and every transition want to convey, BEFORE watching the "Inside of" which gives with detailed explanations - that is a big success for every show. Bravo!
What a MASTERPIECE! This is how you make an adaptation how Creig and Neil worked and expanded the story from episode one to nine expanding the world the characters the human nature and the beauty and horror of humanity. This is a 10/10 for me. Neil Thanks the universe It didn't work as a movie! This it was meant to be with Creig! Mind blown!!! This deserves all the awards. Thank You 4 protecting your story Neil and giving it the adaptation it deserves. TLOU was never about the infected but about the human nature and how beautiful it was captured on the show! Perfect cast, the TALENT of both Bella and Pedro the way both are able to exude so many human expressions, emotions and a lot of times without words. How real it feels. The rest of the casting each one has been perfect, the attention to detail, the love and respect to original members of the source material Jeffrey, Troy, Ashley! and all the ones that worked behind the camera and in front of it. What a marvelous experience to add to the world of TLOU!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 The BEST adaptation of anything I've ever loved!!! (for me personally) CAN'T WAIT FOR S2! BELLIE IS GOING TO BE FERAL! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

@@lx-icon Glad I found this comment, was thinking the same when he was telling her and I was like Joel you are walking on mighty thin ice here😁
At the start of the episode where you can hear a woman panting and grunting, I heard our ellie. After so many hours of hearing her in the games her voice was immediately recognisable. Ashley johnson really did birth Ellie😢It was so beautiful that she played ellies mother. This show really did my fav game justice. Thank you to everyone involved❤
I know!!!!!! It was immediately clear to me too!!! I was like, "that is Ellie!" 😅
yeah, it's been 10 years since the games came out, when it first came out i played it like 20 times for sure, then as years passed i played it here and there. but whenever i hear ashley, either in the show or she shows up on my feed somewhere online, my brain just goes ELLIEEEEE

I know haha! I played both games so many hours and it was instantly noticable
Yeah, I heard it and I was like, "Wait, is it Ellie?" and I see her and it's not Ellie in the show but Ellie in the game..lol
Bella looks so much like Ashley imo. Perfect casting for a mother-daughter pair
Initially i thought its grown up ellie, they did a time jump, yes they did but backwards.
Same thought at first. Glad Ashley as Ellie in the game gave birth Ellie in the series @@lifechann
There will be one side that is bad lol
The saddest thing is knowing the giraffe scene was so necessary because it may have portrayed the last moment of true trust between Ellie and Joel
oh :((
why would you say that, now I can't stop crying
Except for the scene de comes next.
Craig having so much respect for the game is the reason this show was amazing. Kudos to Craig so awesome.
And that's the secret, isn't it?
Respecting the source material While building On top of it, adding to it, and making changes where you Can, without ever Sacrificing what made it great.
@@dmar3651 it only took 30 plus years.
Kind of insane the Scary Movie writer would be doing this type of content.
@@dmar3651 also requires the source material to be good to begin with though lol which is often rare in video games.
Is it just me or do Ellie and Anna really look similar like for real mother and daughter, incrdible casting
At first i thought its grownup Ellie
"It wasn't time that did it." And then Pedro's look at Bella, like that's how you say 'I love you' without saying 'I love you.'
Ashley Johnson as Ellie’s mom was just so perfect. Not to mention that Ashley actually LOOKS like Bella Ramsey
You can tell she doesn't believe him and senses something is off.
man this comment is the truth👌🏾
I don't think I've seen a comment more perfectly and succinctly summarize the moral complexity of the ending of the story.
Joel Wick has finally arrived. What a bloodbath
Also a perfect ending to this season as that is exactly how the first game ended as well
I love how we got to see him finally get comfortable enough to talk about Sarah.
It’s awesome to see the actress who voices Ellie in the video game play as modern Ellie’s mother
I remember her from Growing Pains and Rosanne. She looks the same now as she did when she was 10.
One of the best video-game shows ever, if not, THE best video-game show. This show has set the bar for video-game adaptations. Can’t wait for Season 2 after all the foreshadowing.
They’ve easily set the gold standard for video game adaptations.

@@fourleaf7570 Yes and no

Best series I’ve ever seen in my life and I say this a hermit who’s binged countless series. Like nothing even comes close.
Where you can love it, and/or hate it, but you always understand why each person does what they do.
oh god. i hate this parallel because its so true :(
I watched with my wife, who has not played the games.
Time doesn't heal anything, it just fade it ....
This hit hard man.
The music did it for me in the episode. So glad they kept it exactly like the game. Made me cry.
Happy to see Ashley get to play Ellie's mom it was awesome to hear the original Ellie's voice again.
having played the game I just wanna say that Pedro Pascal absolutely nailed the character of Joel.
Having Ashley play Ellie's mother was a stroke of genius.
I’m never going to get over Pedro’s voice break when he says “it wasn’t time that did it”
I have to say, Bella's accent is just gorgeous.

Craig sounds so passionate about the project and it really shows, on the quality of tlou. It was great to relive this fantastic story in a new light.
the laura bailey cameo as one of the nurses was a nice surprise too
As amazing as Pedro pascal and Bella Ramsey’s performances were, Ashley Johnson completely stole the show with the short amount of time she had.

Well done HBO you restored our faith in video game adaptations 👏
I don`t know why but, Joel walking away in the hospital without Ellie was even more heart breaking in the series for me than in the game. It was great in the game too but, seeing like this in live action, you can actually feel the pain of just leaving behind someone you love knowing if you walk away in that point you`ll never gonna see that person again. It gave me chills.

I'm so happy they perfectly mimicked the game when they did Joel's monologue to Ellie in the car lying to her about what happened. I had hoped they would because it was cut perfectly in the game and definitely did not need to be changed.
Thank you for everything, Craig, Neil, Bella, and Pedro
I’m really happy you guys made this show happen. I honestly expected it to be mess like every other live adaptations of video games, but boy I was wrong.

Bravo!
This show is so beautifully done
