It's rare that I would offer a comment with Petrosian in mind, but here is one. Petrosian had a reputation of being defensive and boring, but it was games like this that made him world champion. Strong defending against fierce attackers. Petrosian deserves his due and Fabi paid him a tribute.

It's not really a question whether Firouzja mixed up his lines or gave Caruana the edge on purpose, seeing as Firouzja says himself in the interview that he messed up the move order by playing d4 without B×Nc6 first. After that Caruana had a clear advantage and was always the favourite to win. This is not to belittle Caruana's play - we all know he is a great player - but it's just a fact that Firouzja blundered out of the opening here. Caruana himself described the game afterwards as a "gift". And Firouzja said he had "lost against [him]self" as Fabi "didn't really do anything special, because he didn't need to" [edit: though actually B×f2 to defend the position was a bit special]. That said, Caruana did well to defend against Firouzja's onslaught which smacked a little of desperation.

Chess aficionados nowadays, about Alireza, love him or despise him saying is overrated. I don't get it.
In one hand he has clearly some flaws in his game on overall strategy. We don't need Kramnik to realise that sometimes he pushes to hard and struggles a lot to convert technical positions with small advantages. On the other hand what he has been accomplishing is extraordinary, and the numbers are there to confirm.
Ali is a beast but I don't know if he's going to be the best (Abdusatorov? Gukesh?... Let's see).
Of course it is interesting to observe that the only video (so far) shown from the tournament leader is the one he lost -- the draw against Shankland was a game much more interesting, for example.
But ok, this is perfectly fine. I love Agadmator videos 🙂

He is extremely talented, but so many people want him to be the next Magnus which is putting the cart before the horse. Not to say that his accomplishments aren't impressive, but they keep feeding into this notion when, as you pointed out, there are also players like prag, abdusatorov, and gukesh vying for it. They're all still so young and have a lot of time to improve.

The problem with playing against the Berlin defense is that Alireza Firouja is now playing for the French confederation and is playing like the French. To beat the Berlin, you need to play like a Russian.

Joining a federation doesn't really mean your playing style changes or that you use openings with names of people or places in the federation country. Maybe the fantasy children's stories were like that. But take your hand, smack yourself in the face and come back to reality.
