How to Install Android Car Stereo (ATOTO A6 PRO Car Radio) in Chevy or GMC Truck and SUV

- In this video we show how to install a double din Android head unit in a Chevy Truck. This is the ATOTO A6 Pro Android head unit featuring Android Auto. The installation was performed in Pete's 2004 Chevy Silverado but the exact some process will work in late 90's and early 2000's GM vehicles.

The basic steps outlined in this video will be very similar in many vehicles such as Ford, Dodge, etc. Slightly different hardware will be required but the overall process will be the same.

Tip for anyone installing any head unit on these year trucks.... you HAVE to connect the red accessory wire from the radio harness to a switched wire as shown in this video. If you connect the red accessory wire to the 3rd party harness as shown, it will NOT power up as, I've learned, there is no switched power in the factory radio harness. No, I have no idea how the factory radio powers up without a dedicated accessory wire. Good luck.
Has to do something with the 03 and above full size GM trucks using a CANBUS system. The 99-02 were simpler, they used 12 volts to power everything. The newer trucks run everything through the BCM makes for a more complicated electrical system.

Thanks, great video! Getting ready to do my own install in a 2004 Sierra. Also, you might consider adding a link for a wire harness that comes with a data bus that retains door chime, etc. (example, Metra LC-GMRC-01). Also, when taking out the factory radio I’ve seen a note that the dash support needs to be cut out to allow larger radios to be installed. Guess I’ll find out soon enough.

Tap the RAP wire from the BCM Gray,B3 dk blue wire so the radio stays on while on standby mode. I did it that way and it's much better then taping the AC.
You inspired me to do the self install for my mom's Toyota Rav 4 with the atoto! I read the reviews on Amazon for the stereo and they seemed great buy you totally sold me on it with your transparency and the ease of how well you explained everything perfectly! I'm no car expert at all but have always wanted to be and I hope with watching your videos I'll get there one day!! 😁

A little late to the party....outstanding video guys!!! I was looking at the 10in ATOTO A6 Pro, but the overall look of the smaller unit convinced me to change that thought for my 2004 Avalanche. Hoping to be able to get all factory "stuff" working (steering wheel controls, Sat Radio, etc). I have a wireless backup camera, but am going to switch to the ATOTO since I will have a nice screen. Should be easy wiring from the back, lots of room underneath the truck. Might even get a forward facing camera - saw good video of where that could go....

I love how well you explain how to install the radio. I have the steering wheel control on my truck and I wanted to retain. Do you reccomend a stereo wiring harness???
You'll need a separate interface module to retain steering wheel controls. The harness that we solder in the video includes the factory audio. We will be shooting a video soon that shows how to connect steering wheel controls

For those watching with a 99-02 model truck do not buy a universal mounting kit like that it will not work, look specifically for a 99-02 kit as they are on rails and not screwed in

I've watched this a few times, love the detail. But, on the quick connect harness, the Red wire that doesnt connect to anything on the car side of the connector (3:21), why connect anything to it? Can't I just bend it over and tape it off and just connect the Red accessory wire from the head unit side (6:20) to the 12v switched wire on the back of the a/c controller? I'm not understanding why even use that wire? Please help. Seems the way its shown is to connect both Red wires together then connect the 3rd wire the extension to the 12v switched wire on the A/C.......Is that correct? BTW this is for a 2006 Silverado 1500 (NO Bose)....... It should be exactly the same as your 2004 in this video.

Well done brother! Seriously i feel way more confident on this install now. I have a 2005 Chevy Impala LS with an after market JVC headunit. The stock amp has been by passed I would assume since the radio works, but honestly I've never pulled it out. Any suggestions or tips?? Or is it pretty much what you already described? I was planning on throwing on the rear view camera and steering controls. So other then adding those two on the harness do you for see any other issues I should know?
Most importantly are you happy with the Atoto? I guess I should've led with that lol
We've been extremely happy with atoto a6 pro. We have a full in depth review of the unit and the backup camera installation up on the channel as well so I would check those out. My first suggestion before buying anything would be to pull out what you have installed and see how it is wired up. Look for a working diagram for your vehicle so you can determine what goes where.

has anyone had an issue with a whining noise coming through the speakers after installing? i believe it could be the alternator. I soldered all connections well so i don’t know what is causing the loud noise

This was a very helpful video. My truck is a 2013 Sierra and I was still able to use this. The one thing I can't figure out is a 12v switched ignition source in my dash fuse box using a fuse tap. Tried dome lights and BCM, but the radio retains power after the accessory shuts off. Any suggestions?
Question about the switched power for the 12 volt red wire... I'm installing in a 2007 silverado (new body NOT classic), do I still need to worry about tapping into another wire as shown in the video? If so which wire exactly should I use? Brown wire on the bottom isnt really helpful since it could be totally different to other models/years.

I bought the harness to use on a 2005 gmc envoy because I was told it was the one I needed. After wiring harness to the radio harness I get nothing. The radio doesn't even power up. I'm betting it is a pin in the wrong place issue. Also after watching several other videos I see people talking about running the red wire to the ignition switch. Any info woulkd be appreciated!

Awesome! Glad it was useful! It does not affect the chimes on non-canbus systems. for canbus systems (often ones with the upgraded sound systems) you'll need an additional interface module. We will be uploading a video soon that shows how to setup a system when an interface module is required.

Hello there, I have a question, I have a 2004 Chevy Silverado Z71, I followed your video and installed everything as per your instructions. The only issue was the radio antenna adapter that came with the harness didn't fit, the connector on the truck is a pin connector, but on the adapter the female connector hole has a fine pin in there. Any ideas?

As soon as I saw this videoI actually ordered everything in the link because I fell in love with this headunit and while I was trying to put the bracked on the atoto it fucked up the screen and trust me I was being as gentle as possible the bracket that I bought from the link did not fit the head unit . So now I don't have a factory stereo or a atoto . And I just dropped some new speakers in my truck . So thanks for the shit link man I appreciate it
Aww man ☹️ that really sucks. I am sorry to hear that. I just double checked the link and that is the exact one we used. The fitment was tight because of the rounded edges on the bezel and the square edges on the unit. We were able to get it on tho and once we did it fit. It was snug for sure tho.

"If I send power to the wrong wire..." I'll tell you that this is possible. In February of 1984 I was installing a new Craig Road Rated Receiver ©️ in my wife's '82 Buick Regal. Somehow I managed to cross a wire to the dash lights and when I tried everything out that evening the interior of the Regal lit-up like the sun. I forget exactly what I did wrong but I eventually found the problem. I was fortunate to not have set the car on fire.

You can istall the gps antena iside the dash, no need to istall it on the window,
Yes you can. Pete opted for the window to make sure he had the best connection. I install them inside the dash all the time without an issue

Great video. I have a 2012 Silverado and looking to get the same stereo. My truck already have the speaker for my bluetooth and this stereo comes with one. Do i need to replace the one the truck comes with or can i continue to use it with the new stereo?
The built in Bluetooth OnStar microphone does not use a 3.5mm audio plug. It instead uses a different type of connector. I have seen people try to use the factory OnStar mic with an aftermarket headunit without any luck however I have also seen people use this product to keep the factory Bluetooth/OnStar in their trucks: amzn.to/2BNe5L8
With the item I linked you probably won't use the stereo for bluetooth phone calls

If you put the wifi interface inside the dash can you do the same with the GPS?
Possibly. Haven't tried that to see how good the signal is.
Can you just install the wifi antenna in the stereo where it will be hidden and the mic on top of the stereo less wiring around trims and such
The antenna should work there yes. You'll just need the mic somewhere near where you talk because it doesn't pick up voice the best if it is far

can i install the a6 with wiring harness shown in video into a bose system and just lose some steering wheel and onstar features? will it work? what features will i lose?
Usually the Bose systems add some complexity to this and the wiring harness adapter that we used probably won't be the one you want. To keep steering wheel controls, the Axxess ASWC-1 Steering Wheel Control Adapter should work.

How do you like the stereo? I'm thinking of replacing a high end Kenwood in my Charger... do you recommend this stereo?
So after using it for a couple of weeks I will say that it works quite well. The only hand gesture controls that I use are volume up and volume down so that’s kind of a gimmick for now.
Ever since receiving the single that allows Apple CarPlay and Android Auto to work i have been using that and it has been working extremely well.
Before having the CarPlay dongle I was using the Bluetooth and it worked very reliably. Audio sounded good and it would connect quickly and start playing music.
The hands-free microphone is “OK”. People can understand me but the quality isn’t too great.
The auto dimming screen worked good at first but ever since daylight savings it hasn’t been dimming the screen properly when it gets dark outside so I lay have to mess with those settings more to fix it again.
I’m not sure how the audio amp RMS compares to other Android headunits but it sounds good with my truck speakers.
I have it, it puts out better audio than my previous unit. I would recommend it.
just came from the m4 to the a6. pretty similar except i could never get the easy connect to work. And since coming from the m4, i liked its music player and radio apps better
What was different about the apps on the m4? And the easy connect didn't work on the old unit?

It should. Might require a slightly different process but looks like it will work. Just open the box very carefully and return it if it doesn't 🤷🏼♂️

I am attempting to install an Atoto in my 2009 Chevy Cobalt and I am running into a wiring issue. I bought a metra wiring harness and wired it up as indicated. however, the Atoto only works when the car key is on ACC. If I start the car the Atoto will power up but then enter a boot loop. This seems like it might be a power issue, do I need to do the 12V power tap like you did in this video ?
It sounds like a power issue. I would short the acc power and constant power together on the hardness to verify that is the issue. If that fixes it you will need to tap a constant power source.

@@cvendet1 if you connect the constant power to the acc power on the harness which connects to the atoto harness it is the same thing if you have it setup right. But make sure you are connecting the right things because of you don't you can damage the device.

Although if it works do I need to tap into a constant power source or can I just leave it with the ACC power and constant power connected together into the Atoto constant power wire?

It works for iPhone if you buy the ATOTO AC-CPAA48 adapter. I use it daily and it works well for CarPlay. We just uploaded a video showing how it works

Hmm I wonder if you could use a joycon EXR steering wheel control module like the one here www.mo-co-so.com/mobile/Product.aspx?id=37736
It wires up to the resistive steering wheel wires and then you program it and plug it into the usb of an androids tablet.

We haven't installed a kit into a vehicle with steering wheel controls yet so no updates but when we do we will make a video 👍
I just installed the PAC RP5-GM11 harness with the Atoto A6 tonight in my 2006 Silverado. The install is straightforward with both sets of instructions from the harness and the head unit. The steering controls were the tricky part. I used trial and error and eventually was able to get it working after a few hours of messing with different combinations.
On the RP5-GM11 control box, there is a numbered dial you turn to match the head unit you're using. If installing the Atoto A6, turn the dial to the number 7 BEFORE plugging the harness into the vehicle.
While you are wiring the harnesses together, you have to wire the blue/white wire from the PAC Steering wheel control harness to the orange (Steering Control#+) wire on the Atoto harness. Leave the 3.5mm aux plug unhooked from anything.
Then once plugged in and fired up, go on the head unit, go to settings, general settings, steering controls. Select the button you want to program (volume up, down, etc.), it will start flashing, the select the corresponding button on your steering wheel and the selected item should have a small flag pop up on the screen to show it is programmed. Repeat for the rest of your buttons then click save.
Done.

Should be very similar to this guide. You'll just need to get the right wiring harness for the features you have in your truck. If you don't have steering wheel controls it will be simpler
I have a 2006 GMC Canyon. My a/c controller doesn't have the same wiring as yours, so I'm not sure what wire to tap into for constant power. When I assembled everything, it didn't work so I'm guessing that's the issue. All of my wire connections are good and correct otherwise. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!
We just installed this in a Jeep and had the same problem where everything was wired up but it wasn't working. We had to find a switched power source. any wire in the vehicle that has switched power will work.

It was just a convenient place to access switched power. It works with the truck in accessory mode which is why we picked it; however, we will probably be changing it to be connected to another source that remains on for a few mins after the vehicle is turned off. Currently, when Pete shuts the truck off, he has to turn it back into accessory mode for the radio to come back on while parked
What wire did you end up connecting too for switched power, to keep radio on after truck is shut off?
We haven't changed it yet from what we used in the video

Do the factory chimes still work with the wiring harness? I have found the low fuel chime and turn signal chime helpful and wouldn't want to loose them with this install.
To our knowledge, any vehicle without canbus systems will retain the factory chimes. If you have a canbus system, you will likely require an additional module (you will see this module in a video we have coming in the next couple of weeks on a Jeep Wrangler install of the Atoto). The chimes still work in Pete's Silverado which did not have a canbus system. The module required will vary with the make and model. The factory chimes and signals also still work in our friend's wrangler with the canbus system.
Is the Bluetooth function reliable to use with Waze and Pandora. thanks
The Bluetooth works very well. Connects every time I start the truck and will automatically pick up where the music was when I launch the Bluetooth phone app. The audio still works even when going back to the home screen on the device and doing other things. One thing I noticed was that even when I toggle BT1 to be off in the phone app my phone will still connect to it via BT.. Need to figure out what is happening with that. If you are wondering what BT1 is, what I mean is there are 2 Bluetooth modules... BT1 is for the music and phone calls and BT2 is for tethering and data transfer type stuff.
Another thing I've noticed is that when playing music over Bluetooth the app on the headunit does not show a progress slider of where you are in the song so you can't scrub forward/backward.

If you pick up the dongle which we have linked in the description you can also use Android auto or car play which allow you to have Pandora and Waze on the display with audio. Both work well
Do you know if it has a connection for steering wheel buttons?
It is compatible with steering wheel controls. This truck didn't have them but we will be showing how to do it with a different atoto head unit on a Dodge ram in a future video.

You'll need some additional hardware. Bose may operate over canbus (not positive of this) but if it does you will need a device that is compatible with the atoto head unit and your amplifier. Not sure which that one will be. First step is to determine if the system is canbus or not.

Not android auto compatible. It specifically states that on their product page.
We tried it with two Android phones (Galaxy Note 4 and Note 8) and Android Auto worked for both. You do need to purchase an extra dongle and download an app though:

Can you lock the screen for privacy..
So I just went to check this, in the Settings -> Security menu there is something called Data Protection which seems to let you set a pattern to lock individual files from being accessed. If I go to the bottom there is an option to turn on Screen Lock, however, when I select it nothing happens. It is not grayed out but it doesn’t allow me to set a password, pin, or pattern to secure the device.
I don’t see why it wouldn’t be possible though, so I’ll try and get that figured out before I say with 100% certainty that it can’t be done

I looked up some pictures of your interior and I would suggest first popping out your screen and making sure there is enough room for it to be installed in the dash. Try to find someone that has installed a double DIN unit onto your vehicle as the head unit dimensions are pretty standard. You will also need to find a cover plate made for your car and if you want any steering wheel controls to still function, it may require any additional module (watch our SA102 install guide which gives an example of steering wheel control compatibility).

Haven't done it ourselves yet. Some vehicles require an extra module. If you watch our review video we have a section that shows the menu for configuring the steering wheel controls.

i have tried an Iphone 4 , an Ipod and an samsung s7
they did respond but their solution was ridiculous and would cost me money when the issue was no fault of my own. i even sent the link to the video so they could see the issue, but still refused to resolve the issue without a great deal of work and expense on my side. not good enough.

How much control are you looking for? Searching menus? No. But it can play/pause/skip with an iPod
@@TheSundaeDrive How? I plug my ipod classic 160gb into the USB and it just see's it as a "drive". And the screen on the ipod just shows it's connected so you can't use the ipod itself.
@@TheSundaeDrive And then the best part is I "ejected" the ipod and it still erased all my songs, so now I have about 5 hours worth of work to go thru all my 30,000 songs in itunes to make another playlist LOL

This was out in a 2004. Should fit in a 2002 might be some slight trimming behind the dash but ours fit with no trimming
