    I absolutely LOVE your design with that thinner stream. It actually has real world application and can hold enough fuel to make it somewhat long term useable.

    Its insane how much energy such a device would need. Same thing goes for something like a starship. For an example: the Nostromo from Alien had a 3.4 TERAwatt reactor, which allowed it to produce enough thrust to lift its 65.000 tons of the ground. For reference, 3.4 terawatts was the average GLOBAL energy production of 2022. You need the entire global energy production to lift a single relatively small starship of the ground.

      3.4 Tera watts is roughly equivalent to 15 grams of lithium hydride being converted into helium, every second.
      Of course I have no idea how the ship could process that amount of power without burning itself up.

      @@deltab9768 For comparison: the Saturn Vs first stage produced roughly 190 gigawatts of energy. Of course the Saturn V had the luxury of using the cryogenic fuel as coolant and turning the energy intro thrust basically directly, but it shouldnt be completely impossible for us to harness such energy in other forms. The biggest problem would likely be the massive radiation from the reactor, even if using aneutronic fusion.
      Regarding the Nostromo: I think the lore book states that it used the reaction mass as coolant during atmospheric flight, but I dont know how it cooled the reactor in space. Even if it had a rediculous efficiency of 99,9% it would still produce 3,4 GW of waste heat that you can hardly get rid off.

    I am a bit perplexed by the amount of trouble you had with dealing with Acetone. You can get EPDM tube (water cooling stuff tends to be more flexible) that is quite flexible or Latex surgical tubing. There is also the option of using the components in those cheap acetone pumps. Mcmaster seems to have a wide selection of tubing. You could consider a linear peristaltic pump for your form factor.

      Last thing i wanted to add is those cheap water pumps you can get all over aliexpress. I don't think that they use any plastic that would not work for acetone. And if they did just machine a replacement.

      It wasn’t just acetone, it was acetone AND xylene. You can get rubbers that handle each easily, but ones that do both are very rare and expensive.

      ​@@ExcessiveOverkill ​What compelled you to choose such a difficult to work with fuel? Seems like that could have easily addressed your woes and weeks of work. Also why did you still need to use Viton. With Just IPA you should have been fine with rubber.
      You seem very intelligent and the project seems well thought out but some of your decision making and time investment does not seem to make sense with the presented information. I am all for makeing things overly complicated especially for personal project but without the context of why just does not seem smart.

      @Ender_Wiggin I skipped over a lot of the reasons. Acetone gave the best smooth blue flame of everything we tested. And xylene gave the exact opposite, it was super bright and flame looking but had a super smooth stream. Mixing them would give you a super bright but smooth flame. We switched to just gasoline with isopropanol and it’s alright but not as good as the original mix. We still use viton so we can use xylene, gasoline, and isopropanol

After you presented the reasoning, showing how you made it work with a zero compromises solution shows you skill, determination and work ethic! Any way just my two cents.     Nice! I'm glad you finally found a working configuration :D also quite a complex and impressive build! I also want to build a lightsaber, but I'm planning on making one that can actually cut things, a lot like the hacksmiths one, I have several designs, and not nearly enough time to work on them, but I hope to eventually make them. my favorite design incorporates an oxy-carbon fuel source with a very high energy density, and an insane flame temperature ~6,000F. I need some custom ceramics and extremely insulating fiber insulators to make it.

    This Endurance to get it work. Really Great. Cant wait to see Version 2.
    My only Idea to Seal the Leaks between the 2 Parts would be to use metal and then lapping the sealing surfaces instead using Plastic Parts and Seals. Same for the Ball, Grinding and lapping the Contactzone with another Ball of Same Diameter.

    Excellent job!
    I think with the system you developed, if you had 5-8 streams, it would look like a "movie" lightsaber. Six streams would give it the "girth" that we see in the movies! Especially if you stuck with the hotter (bluer) temps (colors), it would avoid that "flame-lapping" effect I was seeing.
    Then just apply some of the color chemicals you mentioned at 9:50 and you will hit pay dirt!

    if that thing is pressurized, could you apply some sort of filament to it that would extend the blade out further that starts at the pummel then when its engaged fills with the gas and allows the gas to expand out on all sides sort of like a soaker hose and is ignited so its blade is more robust but still can burn and hit things like your current one?

    I'm wondering about using lasers, say two beams at an angle & where they meet are in opposite phase to cancel the beams out. Or a central beam & the ones around it tuned so they meet the central beam in an opposite phase.

    One way of producing ball check valves so they seat right is to set the ball in the valve and hit it with a punch. This creates a basically custom seal and is how it's done in some saftey valves/pressure relief valves. Works in brass and should work in aluminium, not sure about iron or steel, atleast with normal hardened balls.

      A hardened ball bearing will impart dents into most steel, at least unhardened steel... Aluminium and any other soft material is no issue... The only issue with hard steel is that if the steel is too hard, or better said too brittle, it wont impart a dent, but will shatter the steel, but a high quality mill vise with 58HRC jaws will still receive brinelling from ball bearings if you use them without grinding a flat on them to hold irregular parts... A ball point contact with pressure, caused by a hardened ball bearing will give a custom seat in most materials that are ductile... Steel will only make a shallower dent... The term brinelling in itself refers to checking the hardness of a part of any material with applying set pressure with a steel ball onto the surface being checked, so yeah, a hard ball will definitely work on steel... Brass, bronze, copper and alu are equivalent to plastic for the needs of impressing a round seat with a ball - they offer minimal resistance...

    Great work! Super clean. What about using the silicone hose for nitro fuel rc cars? I’ve used it to great success with my pyro systems with methanol and butane mixes. There’s a heavy duty variant used for actual race cars. Ignition in these systems can be aided greatly by adding airflow either by using passive Bernoulli principal tricks or in the case of fire saber I’m working on a tiny edf. Ignition without plenty of oxygen ain’t gonna happen no matter how hot you get.

    Did you consider centrifugal pumps? It could be driven with magnet pairing so the motor could be outside of the fuel area or it could have the magnets inside the fuel area while the coils are outside of it.

      He needs high pressure and low flow. Centrifugal pumps don't do that very well, they're better suited to high flow and low pressure applications. Theoretically, I think he was on the right track with the triplex diaphragm design with a fixed angle cam. That would get him everything he needs including low pulsation for a nice smooth stream, but getting the materials to work reliably at that tiny scale is probably just not possible.
      Source: I work for an engineering company that manufactures industrial positive displacement pumps, mostly triplex and quintiplex diaphragm pumps, but we have some peristaltic models too.

    I'm at the part where you're talking about the balls not sealing well. It makes me wonder if you could have simply reached in with a long pin punch and just gave it a few taps on an anvil with a hammer to create a "seat" so to speak. Kudos for even attempting it though. :)

      Maybe, that was considered, but it would make the body much longer as space is needed for the threaded rod, and it would also need at seal to contain the fuel under pressure. I really wanted to avoid the chances of a seal failing and leaking fuel all over my hand, that’s why the only seal this version has is under suction, worst thing that could happen is some air gets sucked in with the fuel.

    once the plasma burning table i work on had the cutting head fail. it blew out the side, it put out a perfect lightsaber it grew to 6 feet moved around and shrunk to nothing. but it was it.

    hell you dont even need to have a support take like three pieces of nichrome and interlace them and it becomes more rigid, thatd be cool if you coll make a mechanicism that would wind and unwind that until a light saber, then push the power through

    Why such complications? You just need to make a screw drive to the pushing piston and that’s it. In addition, with such a piston you can know how much fuel is left and control the flow of liquid. The stepper motor needs to be made with a thread in the center to push the screw. And to reduce the space occupied by the extended screw, you need to arrange all the electronics and batteries in a circle with a hole in the center. The only thing you need to think about with this design is how to arrange the electronics and batteries so that there is a hole in the center.

    My guess on the check valves is either not enough spring force or that by making it not sit on the hard edge with your second design, you actually created a different problem that let fuel squeeze past.

    CO2 cartridge is a simple answer to replace pump part.
    Little, cheap, available everywhere, chemically safe source of pressure. Big enough pressure!

      Unless you form the seat with the ball using a pin punch and a small hammer. Replace the ball afterwards of course.

    you have the tools, have you thought of a refracted high power laser inside an airfilled retractable tube? think flimsy vacuum tube and high power laser, more dangerous than fire too. containment of lazers is the real issue I cant figure out.

      The cutting ability from lasers comes from all the energy being in such a small area. Just having a straight beam the width of a lightsaber blade would reduce the energy density so mu you couldn’t cut anything. Let alone a full blade. And lasers are really big and expensive lol

    Instead of using the battery for ignition, you could use whatever that crystal is that produces electricity when impacted. This way, you could use one button for both ignition and fuel, won’t have to worry about a constant arc, one less thing to drain the battery, and would be safer from accidental use as it would take a good amount of force to press the switch but wouldn’t take much force at all to keep it held

      The flame isn’t self sustaining(yet), so it needs a constant arc to stay lit.

    so you were using acetone as a fuel but couldn't find any soft material it wouldn't ruin. silicone is mostly acetone resistant (at room temperature) and comes in a range of durometers
