3.6 Pentastar V6 Engine Tear Down | How to inspect a used engine #3.6Pentastar dodge

- Опубликовано: 29 авг 2024
- I have a 2011 Dodge Durango in the shop this week and it's getting an engine replacement. It has the 3.6 Pentastar V6 in it, which can also be found in various Dodge, Chrysler and Jeep vehicles.
Alot of my customers opt to get their replacement engines USED. Most of these salvage yards only give you a 30 day warranty on the engine assembly. I try to save my customers time and money by inspecting the engines the best I can BEFORE I install it. NOW, I don't tear them down the way I did in this video, but I try to check for some of the things I mentioned in this video and try to catch any red flags if I can.
Typically, I would have never accepted this engine and I would've made them give me another one, but I thought it would make a great engine tear down video for you guys.
Also, most salvage yards only guarantee the Heads and Block of an engine. Anything else is considered an accessory which is why they gave me the engine with a cracked oil pan.
Anyways, I hope you learn something from this video. If so, give it a LIKE and share with others.

Fun video. I am intimiately familiar with this engine as I have 4 Promasters. 680,000 620,000 480,000 and 60,000 miles respectively. We drive around 10,000 per month per van. In all that time, the ONLY problem these engines have is the Pentastar Tick, which is wear in the rocker needle bearings. The symptom is ALWAYS a single cylinder misfire. Left unaddressed, the rocker wears enough to be sloppy enough to gak the cam, and after that it will suck a valve and take out the motor. Usually happens around 110k, though I have had 2 motors go to 500k and never develop the problem.
There is an easier way to evaluate a replacement engine - pull the oil filter and cut it open. All pentastars put a little bit of metal into the filter, but one that eating it's valvetrain will put a bunch of glitter into the filter.
I can tell you what happened to this engine in the video - the coils have been moved (paint) around on the right side head to try to chase out a single cylinder misfire. Then the poor owner got it to a mechanic who robbed them by pulling the front cover and probably replacing the chain, valvetrain, cams, etc. Much of that was unnecessary. You can remove the cam without touching the front cover if you know what you are doing, and have a $20 special tool, and then you can change the offending rockers and lifters which are $5 each.
The word you are looking for for the oil pan baffle is Windage Tray. In the case of this engine, all that bearing damage was done quickly due to the cracked pan, in my opinion. Pentastars simply don't have bearing problems. Or head gasket problems, or water pump problems, or oiling issues, or really any pattern failure other than the valvetrain. It's kind of amazing.
Great video. Thanks.
Thanks for the great feedback buddy, I agree with you hundred percent about what happened to the motor that sounds right and about the issues, not many problems but the tick noise and the plastic coolant pieces they use
Hey kip. I have a 2017 3.6 ram 1500. When I bought it, it had 23,000 miles on it. It now has about 90,000 . Man so far, the truck has been great. No major issues. I replaced some minor things. I also put a little bigger tires than what came on it. Not to big though. I read your comment. I'm getting kinda scared. Your saying around 110k I'll have major engine problems? Can you let me know how to avoid them? I'm a contractor. I build houses. I'm definitely not a mechanic. I can change the oil, tires, spark plugs, coil pack and stuff along those lines. If you get time can you let me know what to do?
@@davids6075 hey buddy I see you purchased this truck with low mileage as long as you been using high quality oil and the the correct type the engine should be good, just Watch out for that oil cooler I would change it for preventive maintenance it is plastic and can be a little unpredictable good luck

You inspired me to rebuild my wrecked engine!
I have a 2015 Dodge Caravan, which is my work vehicle. Last year, I lost the transmission, and now the engine has failed. I found a used engine to swap in and wanted to know how to inspect it. Your advice gave me a new perspective. You’ve also inspired me to rebuild my wrecked engine. Maybe next year, bad luck will strike again, but I’m ready for it. The main reason I like to do things myself is that I know how to use tools! Thanks, man. Your accent was nice, but a little hard to get.😄
If i get this engine with ONLY rocker arms failure and cam lobes i'd replace the rockers with cams and re-use the engine. They got pretty good lifespan if u take care of them and watch the oil level every once in a while.
Thanks for the look inside of this motor. I have a 2013 Chrysler 200 with this motor in it. I've got over 161000 miles on it with no issue on the motor itself.
I own a jeep wrangler with this engine. I know this 3.6 in and out. Ticking noise is caused by the rocker arms (thats what we call them in this engine specifically), if u ignore the ticking noise for a longer time it will cause the lobes in the cams and hence why u'll need new camshafts. The valve lifters are usually fine in this engine, all 3.6 engines eventually will have ticking noise due to manufacturing defects (NO MATTER WHAT OIL YOU USE AND HOW OFTEN U CHANGE UR OIL IT WILL TICK). You get new REVISED rocker arms once u replace them and should not encounter the same problem again. My engine is on 155k miles and i had to replace the rocker arms at 40k miles under warranty, since then the car's been running like a clock (apart from the oil cooler which leaked and got a revised part for that one too).
Thanks for the informative video my friend, that was just what i'm looking for !
@Sea Life you got the 3rd generation, those problems seem to be solved u should be fine
dude, your explanation of things is outstanding. I am sure there is alot of us out there that appreciate what you do
I appreciate that!
ive been a tech for about 5-6 years and i NEVER thought of using the coil to pull out the plugs.
I clicked on this video as I'm researching for motors to swap in an older car and this one has caught my eye.
My interest in this engine is due to the fact I have the 3.6 Pentastar V6 in my Charger. Thanks for showing the breakdown.
My pleasure glad you enjoyed my video
Thanks for the video. I recently purchased a 2014 dodge charger and wanted to know what my engine looked like and the typical problems to look out for. That's how I ran into your video. It was a big help. Thanks again.
Glad I was able help, thanks for watching buddy!
When my 200 went for dealer service for bad injector, I get it back and the front intake manifold bracket were left disconnected and bent forward. They just throw away the hardware. Typical non caring flat rate mechanics in a hurry. Thanks for the great content!
Thanks for the support buddy
Thanks, I’m in the middle of a 3.6 rebuild and you showed me a couple of things that I didn’t realize about this engine.
No problem,That’s why I do this video’s. I’m glad you was able to learn something from it buddy
In Australia we call them roller rockers. Great video, full of info. So many issues with the left hand bank with loose bolts in the oil galleries, crank angle sensor wiring issues and noisy tappets but still a good motor!
Thanks for watching buddy
I can't believe i stayed awake for this video!!! The engine was a mess from the start!! I was looking for 3.6l engine problems with 2016 charger models
Hey there I work on this engine’s all the time, from different year range and I can tell you that I only see a few problems out of them oil cooler, lifter problem’s those are the big problems, for the oil replace the old with the upgraded aluminum one for the lifter tick issue use high-quality full synthetic oil
Pretty much the 2015 pentastar down years had the rocker arm issues best bet is to get a 2016 present day pentastar Chrysler redesign this engine should be no more issues
The early pentastar v6 engines had an issue with leaky timing chain covers. My 2011 300 had to have the timing cover seal redone and it was covered by warranty. Tech said he had done a few of them so it looked like a common issue. That is probably why the timing cover looked like it had been removed at one point on your engine. You don't have to remove that to fix a ticking rocker. They can be done without removing the cam. You just loosen the cam bearings and lift the cam to replace them. Easy peazy. If done right you wont even mess with timing.
Thanks for the info buddy there is another trick to remove the The rocker to get to the lifter as well I’m going to make a video on it if done right it makes it very easy don’t even have to loosen up the cam cap
@@AlexTheCarDoctor I have 2014 Maserati Ghibli SQ4, the V6 engine in that is based on the Pentastar V6, but has different heads, modified block, etc. But uses a lot of tbe parts such as the valve train, cam variator and some more. Mine is 3.0 due to tbe heads and is a higher compression ratio and is also twin turbo charged and tuned to produce 460 HP. I do all my own maint on my car on my youtube channel jamesDIYGarage. Thank you I watched your other videos and on the pentastar engine and got my answers even thou you still answered it with your comment keep up the good work and honest advice and once again Happy New Years bro.
Thanks for the support buddy. Happy new year 🎊🎆
I have a 2018 Ram 1500 3.6 4×4, flex fuel. The only things i have changed is 1 spark plug and 1 battery. It has 83,000 miles. I service it whenever my oil light comes on. Great truck. I would buy another one.
I honestly don’t think the 3.6 Pentastar is that bad. Folks just gotta take care of them.
Don't mix up your bearing caps either if you're doing an inspection. On this engine and a lot of newer engines, they use cracked bearing caps where they put a score line in them and physically snap them off the rod. The rough surface of the breaks ensure a tighter seal. If you mix the caps up they will be misaligned or not fully tightened.
Very good information I thought I mentioned that in my video if not That’s very important you don’t mix them up I agree 100%
The bearing caps are marked I1, I2,I3, I4 etc depending on which camshaft they came off. I1 is Intake closest to the cam phaser. The cam must also be rotated to a rest position so there is no pressure on the caps from the valve springs.
MUCH RESPECT FOR YOUR SKILL AND WORKING KNOWLEDGE , AND TAKING YOUR TIME TO SHOW US , THANK-YOU VERY MUCH BROTHER !!

Good stuff, had 5.7 kept from idling bc of poor oil distribution. Didn't get 5.7 knock. Got an f150 5.0 never looked back
Back when I was tearing engines apart.... long long ago... bearings used to be plated with different color metals. You could tell how worn a bearing was by how many colors you saw.
And actually, I've seen worse looking junk engines installed into people's cars over the years. That one might make for a really decent rebuild core rather than a drop in.
I agree buddy I still have it
Great demonstration! I learned a lot about my engine!
Thanks buddy I’m glad you enjoyed it
Rocker arms. The needle bearings fail, if not caught in time it can destroy a cam shaft or fill the engine with metal. Same thing can happen on the Ford 5.4 liter 3 valve engines.
Looks like the 3.6 is better then the 2.7/3.5 it replaced, I've never worked on a worse engine than the Chrysler 3.5 if it's not eating rod bearings it's pouring coolant from the orings between the block and timing cover. Oh yeah, I almost forgot they tick too except when they start ticking it's because the locating pin on one of the rocker shafts has sheared off and is starving the rockers for oil and simultaneously destroying the cylinder head.
ARE THE NEWER 2022 V6 3.6 BETTER WITH THE ROCKER OR LIFTER PROBLEMS, I JUST BOUGHT A 2022 WRANGLER WITH A V6, ALSO WHATS YOUR TAKE ON THE eTORQUE WITH THAT 48V LITHIUM BATTERY ?? THANKS AGAIN !!
Hey there hopefully they took care of the problem’s I think they did with the newer 3.6. I personally don’t have experience with the Etorque system but I haven’t Hurt too many problems about it.
I don't miss my 2016 T&C it had that nightmare of an engine, never in my life had as many issues as that stupid 3.6,I had 8 rockers, 4 rods,2 batteries, 2 coil packs, full cooling system changed,by 78k miles I was limping it in shop monthly ,so I got rid of it. Great video!
Dang man that engine gave you a headache 🤕
@@AlexTheCarDoctor more then a headache, final straw was getting back after a week at dealership just to hear cam phasers clicking and them tell me not there problem 😑 ya definitely a headache
Correct name is HLA or hydraulic lash adjusters. At least that's what Chrysler calls them.
You make it look so simple
Also you need to check the flexplate there known to Crack and break on the 3.6L pentastar
Thanks for doing this , I own a 3.6 2018, its cool to know this
My pleasure buddy
good work Alex they are technically called " cam followers". They are a decent design but run into problems with the reduction of zinc and phosphorous in newer engine oil. this was a terrible fix to allow for no contamination to cats in the exhaust system so manufacturers could get the emission controls to stay in compliance for the new stupid govt. standards. Yes the removal of zinc and phosphorous from engine oil has led to all these odd wear problems. I have two 2017's with 3.6's and run the Lucas zddp additive in both. Lucas calls it TB zinc-plus.
pt#10063
It's also great break in or new cam/lifter lube. A must for old muscle cars which were designed for older oil formula with a much better additive package.
Thanks for that information
Doing rod bearings on my 2011 300.. thanks for the vid ! Im trying to get it done without removing the cross member/sub frame parts that block the upper oil pan from coming out. Wish me luck Lol
Thanks for watching, let me know how it turns out good luck buddy
I like your style keep up the good work
Thanks brother
If I'm not mistaking I think there called valve lifters I had to check if my rocker arms where lose or broken and they had a set of rocker arms and lifters for my dodge charger
Thanks for telling me, I still haven’t had the time to look it up lol but sounds about right!
Got a 2019 Dodge Journey with the pentastar v6, good to know what to look out for!
@johnputnam6742I had the same Journey. Traded it at 106K. Had the typical Pentastar oil cooler/filter housing leak and loose outer tie rod ends. Replaced the battery at 3 years. Other than that, a good vehicle. Now I have a 2022 Chrysler 300S. Same engine. 56K.
the lifters aren't lifters. they're called "automatic valve lash adjusters" - a lot of the cammers use them including the 4.7 Dodge used in pickups and Durangos. Ford also uses them in their Tritons.
preetty much every OHC engine uses valve lash adjusters/roller followers while pushrod engines use lifters
Cool channel bro, just checked out some of ur videos..got one more subscriber! Let’s get it!

I changed my oil pump on mine cause the solenoid on the pump was throwing a code. Now when mine idles after warming up, it seems a tad chattery. Not sure why. I primed pump with fuel pump fuse out before I started the engine. Only thing I can guess is something with timing chains. Even though I have no correlation codes or any codes at all.
(this is larry-old 99 durango) thank you for sharing your knowledge Car Doctor. i have always wondered when, and how to use RTV, or liquid gasket. can you share your knowledge on when and how to use sealants. specifically, i never knew if you should let the sealant dry/cure a little, or reassemble, without letting the sealant dry/cure. any help you can give will be greatly appreciated.

So i have 4 pentastar engines i service, a 11,12,13and 14. 2 dodge and 2 jeep. In The dodge 3.6l i use 5w 30 and the jeep recommend 5w 20 and both jeeps ive had major repairs. 1 was lifters and roller rockers, along with 1 cam. As for the other it was a head gasket, both about 100k. As for the dodge with over 150k. I feel running the 5w20 isn't lubricating the the rockers enough so they fail after about 100k
Wow it sounds like you have had a time with those 3.6 Pentastar engines.I run 5w30 in them at my shop with out no issues from my customers

Chrysler, Jeep, and I believe Stalantis are the same company? Their quality has dropped significantly! Just about every Penastar engine has some kind of problems. Whether it’s a compression issue, or the oil cooler, that sits in the valley under the intake. How can they sell such garbage? I’d never buy another Chrysler product again.
Can I use 5w30 fully synthetic high mileage Valvoline Platinum oil? It's a 2014 Dodge charger with 119k miles. I figure the thicker oil could help since the miles are so high. And I put 93 gas in it because that e85 felt horrible to drive on
I recommend the OE oil type just to be on the safe side.
@@AlexTheCarDoctor can I get the 5W-20 high mileage synthetic version then?
@@AlexTheCarDoctor I read somewhere that once you put the high mileage type oil into a car because of the additives every time you change your oil you have to keep using only high mileage because of the sealant additives
