I've been a professional technician over multiple brands. Big props for Showing your failures. You learn more from failures than success. Believe it or not the same stuff goes on behind closed doors at the dealerships.
Dodge has to many fails. So much to learn then. Better to learn from car makers that don’t fail so we can create a reliable vehicle based on what actually works. US automakers have a lot to learn.
Chrysler technician here. We just leave the cam gear tool between the gears, take the bolts out and pull the phasers off the end of the cams enough to remove them without removing the phaser from the chain. This way, you don't have to worry about setting timing up which can be a pain on the pentastar, and the chain doesn't drop or jump. Good job!
Yes!!! That was exactly the plan until I could not get them back onto the end of the cams. I didn’t realize I didn’t release the cam chain tensioner enough until later 👍 terrifying thought to have that chain skip a tooth or drop.
@sstressfl yeah our tensioner tools are either missing or so used they do not work well anymore. Plus there are two versions now, for the updated 3.6 which are usually missing lol. I don't remove tension when doing lifters and rockers. Just torque the cam down and wiggle the phaser back on, you will have to twist the cam back and forth with a wrench a few degrees to get the index pin mated. It is tight, but possible. And hey, you just saved yourself like...1600 dollars...I think, I don't really keep up with the prices people pay anymore.
Thanks so much for your video…..between your video and another one I found…I was able to replace 2 of the rockers that went bad. And now, no knocking!!! I felt the same relief you did at the end of the video when I finished the 1.5 day job. I checked all 24 rockers.

Great video on how a normal guy can fix his car as long as he’s researched the job and understands what needs done. As a pro Mechanic for over 40 years I’ve learned some lessons. Take you’re time, make sure you have the right tools and you can do it. Even pros hit stumps everyday . The mistakes you were brave enough to show may be as valuable to viewers as the rest of the video. By the way I despise torx head bolts! Good job!
Thats such encouraging feedback! Thank you 🙏I asked my Dad once, "When did you rebuild your first engine?" He said he was 15 and his dad's car engine failed and they didnt have money to fix it. So he went to the library and found a manual for that car! He told me his motto was "if I can read, I can fix it." Pretty awesome lesson. And of course now we have video and groups, etc etc. Whew! Thanks again for taking time to share your thoughts.
@@sstressfl my brother and I rebuilt our first engine when he was 15 I was 16. We had a old motors manual in the mid 70’s. It was a 327 hi perf Chevy. It ran but not good. We took it to our mechanic buddy and he discovered we put hydraulic lifters on a solid lift cam and wiped out lifters. He installed solid lifters . That 327 in a 64’ El Camino became a local fast car had 4 speed. Those hot rod days prompted us both to go to tech school when we graduated high school and take Diesel Technology. We both had great careers as pro technicians. But it all started with the 327 project. God is good.
@@sstressfl That is a really cool story about your dad, thanks for sharing. 'If I can read, I can fix it.' - A great motto to live by, not just for cars.
Absolutely wonderful video. Thanks for taking the time to produce this. I can say for sure that it will be very helpful for me as I have to do the same exact thing on my own van. And although you made it look fairly straightforward, I'm sure I will have a headache or two in the process.
Supreeeeemly helpful!! (Especially the fails!) My 2012 Chrysler T&C has the same problem, researching what will be required, planning on doing it over Christmas break. You did a terrific job laying it out, presenting the problems, highlighting the steps. I appreciate the time you took for the links in the comments. Kudos! Will watch for more of your videos. Cup of coffee on me!
The job is complete, replaced the oil cooler with a metal unit as well. Engine is LIKE NEW! Quiet, powerful, and smooth. My mechanic wouldn't even touch it. Thanks again man!
Love the excitement and the hand and arm pumps. Amen. Thank you Lord. We bought a 2012 T&C with 115k on it a few years ago. I changed the oil and filter right away and every five grand since. I use 10-30 in the summer and 5-39 in the winter. We are at almost 140k and due for another change. No ticking and it runs great. Good video. Happy Motoring.
Oh that is so awesome to hear. From what I read, the rocker failure comes from inconsistent manufacturing quality. Once I felt them in my hand I realized they were very high quality pieces. It must have to do with the metal casting process. Some fall apart. Most don’t. Chrysler supposedly fixed it in 2016. Whatever it was, it certainly didn’t fail due to poor maintenance 😁 my dad taught me that most cars will go and go and go as long as you do the maintenance. Good for you for taking such good care of your 2012. Bless you brother 🙏🙏 thanks for sharing 🙏
Thank you so much for making this video and the level of detail included! I have a '12 Charger that has probably 3 or so rockers that have noise to them now, and I was struggling to find a proper video that showed a home mechanic doing the work with affordable tools! I should now be able to do this work in May when I get a week off. Thank you so much! God Bless you.
Really enjoyed the video especially your positive attitude toward obstacles as they presented. The video is inspiration to the mechanically inclined to attempt such a fix. Success in your future endeavors! Cheers
Oil changes make a HUGE difference. My engine was spotless inside and I am the same as you with oil changes. I just bought a new RAM 1500 and treating it the same :) Enjoy that Wrangler!
If you install a new cam, you're are going to need to use a scan tool to go through the camshaft re-learn process. Also, don't let anything magnetic near the transmission side of the cam. I just did new lifters and rockers on mine and had to replace the left (front on my van) exhaust cam. I had to laugh when you found the tensioner release tool. Good job.
"Son of a gun!!! Look what was in the bottom of the box!!!" Story of my life lol. Was nice to see someone do this job who isnt an everyday mechanic busting these out all day. I just pulled my Jeep into the garage...about to launch into this job to save thousands of dollars. Not even worried about the actual part replacement...more concerned with getting everything I need to take out back together. Notebook, paint pens, tape, and a sharpie...
Lol I appreciate the feedback and nice to encounter someone who can relate!! Preparation is everything 👍 I’m sure you’ll do great AND save thousands! I don’t know how anyone affords a shop. My best.
@@sstressfl I have the luxury of taking my time...about to take off the valve covers tomorrow. The whole time I am thinking...I hope I dropped enough bread crumbs. Wrangler tear down is stupid...
@@sstressfl Jeep has been sitting in my garage all this time. Finally found the time to get to it. Discovered the bad rocker...cam is not chewed up...replaced all the rockers and lifters....putting it all back together now. Snapped the Engine Block ground putting the valve cover back on. Took me a few days to realize what the broken wire was. The Mopar tension tool didnt even work on the right bank. Had to cheat the cam phaser off to get it out enough to lift the cam shaft. What a headache...been loving it. Miss my Jeep...love the excuse to slink off to the garage for a few hours.
Great video! An honest example of the way it goes working on vehicles. I do it everyday for a living working on all different makes and models. Everything always changing and problems are inevitable. Most repairs can be done at home with a reasonable amount of mechanical aptitude but a shop makes things much easier and tools are a must. Some may criticize the decision not to change them all but I will likely do the same. I have a Dodge Charger with the same issue. Thanks for the video! Even people who do this work for a living watch RUclips videos for guidance. Truth is, we use RUclips a lot so hats off to RUclips for providing the platform and a big thanks to everyone taking the time to share their information, not just on this subject matter but everything we learn about at RUclips University.
I appreciate your feedback 🙏 I’ve been working on vehicles my whole life but not often enough to remember all of the little tricks and traps that you probably know so well 😁. I could kick myself when I mess up but thankful that I have enough experience to get myself out of a jam. I agree! I think RUclips and it’s creators are amazing and I appreciate all of the people that take the time to share 🙏🙏 thanks again for your feedback. 142k on our van and it’s still running great without issue 😎🙏👍💪
Awesome , Im getting ready to do the exact job, but a little apprehensive about cam, your video will definitely help, thanks, keep up the great work ! nice to hear you giving thanks for your ability,
Are you an automotive technician? If not, you sure make it looks like you're one. You are fearless with this type of job. I would've been scared half to death.
I appreciate the encouragement 🙏 I’m not! But I did grow up in a drag racing family 😎😀 I’ve never done this specific work on this specific engine before but I have spent my whole life working on engines. Less in recent years but an engine is an engine… as long as I can find a manual or good videos I am usually not afraid to dig in. My dad used to say “if I can read, I can fix it”. But I have to admit I always worry that something could go wrong and would cost more time and money. By the grace of God, this went well 👏👏👏 Thanks for the feedback my friend.
Great video, I wrap the negative cable in a rag after disconnecting it. While your working it wants to go back to the terminal and make a connection... I had a shocking experience once.
Some dodges with the battery in the bumper and the relays on top have a hole on the negative cable connector that you use to screw it to a mount on the car made for it to hold it out of place
Ill tell you what mine started ticking 50k miles ago. Might go another 100k miles so I've decided to live with it for now. Driving it till it breaks ill let everybody know how far itll go tick tick ticking away lol.
I was afraid of it eating my cam and metal swimming around in the engine so I got it done asap. I could see there was a line on the cam lobe, but no wear. Frequent oil changes for you! :)
I am so Thankful I talked my wife out of buying a Dodge Caravan and instead buying a Toyota. I got a friend that just purchased a Journey they needed very badly and 3 days later find out it has a cracked cylinder head.
They have the lowest cost of ownership over the lifetime of the vehicle and highest resale and trade in values so they make the most sense financially. They may be a bit higher up front than the competition, but over the time you own it you will spend less money. Rav 4 vs. GMC Acadia the Acadia is cheaper up front , but will cost you an arm and a leg in repairs down the road. Better to buy quality up front IMO. All vehicles are a Crap shoot so you might as well bet on the car maker that has the best odds which is Lexus 1st and Toyota 2nd. @@sstressfl
Doing this to my Journey now, 150,000 the original owner never changed the OEM plugs and wow what a dried up rusted mess! I gotta do the coils also but the rocker arm ticks so I’m gonna swap those puppies out and save this engine! Edit: Small update, Spark Plugs and coils swapped, deleted resonator & both mufflers along with a e85 in the tank now and she runs like butter 🔥
My dad always said the diff between a pro and an amateur is that they both make mistakes. But the pro knows how to get out of it :) This is true of any profession... mechanics, drivers, golf, construction, business, etc.
It’s an accurate portrayal of the stuff that happens when us pros do a major repair on your vehicle too. Everything going perfect is rare unless you work on the same vehicles, doing the same repairs, over and over. This is definitely a doable repair at home for the average Joe with a little mechanical aptitude and the proper tools. A positive attitude is one of the most important tools you have and can definitely make or break the job.
My dad worked for the phone company, but on thr weekends he worked on his race car. If he was in the garage, I was right there with him. He taught me a lot. I asked him how he knew so much... he said when he was 15 his dads car broke down and they didnt have money to fix it. So he went to the library and checked out the service manual for that car. Rebuilt the entire engine and got it working again. He said, "If I can read, I can fix it!". Smart man 🙂 So yeah...I grew up turning wrenches and I think of my dad often while working.
I replaced some rock arm 3 years ago, though I stripped one cam bearing/cap bolt. However the ticking comes back now. Could you share the automotive bolt spec? I could not find its spec. Thanks a lot!
Uhhhg!! I found the spec on this page: M6X1.00X34.00 (I used a 35mm and it worked). www.factorychryslerparts.com/showAssembly.aspx?ukey_assembly=2450003&ukey_make=1062&ukey_model=15493&modelYear=2015&ukey_driveLine=12863&ukey_trimLevel=18515
Hey neighbor 😎 Very nice ride. I have read, and I agree, that Stelantis has done good things with Mopar in recent years. Quality has improved and improving! I hope you never have to deal with the issue as well. Peace, my friend! Thanks for the feedback 🙏
I have to say THANK YOU! Your video was the first piece of knowledge I got when doing this repair myself. I was extremely relieved when I turned the key on and the engine sang gently back to life. My engine a 2016 pentastar was so loud. I found 3 completely failed rockers. I used Melling and replaced all 24 lifters and rockers. QUIET!!. While in there replaced the water pump as it showed signs of leakage, all spark plugs and coils. Engine is running so smooth. THANK YOU! I prayed all through the process specially when my timing chain skipped as I was trying to torque back to spec. Realigned everything and IT WORKED.
Wow man great job! Trial and error you know, I get it. I do have a question, I just picked up the 2023 Jeep grand Cherokee 3.6 pentastar. This is the new generation engine I really hope alot of these issues were addressed
My understanding is that they upgraded the rockers in 2016! The engine seems to have gotten better and better. I don’t see the issues on the newer models. Change your oil every 5k. Use quality synthetic. It’s a good engine 👍
Have a 2017 jgc 67k just replaced tires, rear brakes, pulley tensioner and serpentine. Waterpump went at 35k under warranty. Bad batch of wp . Stick with pennzoil no loss. Penstar Likes to drink Mobil 1. Keep up on the maintenance
Jobs like this are why harbor freight are great.. all these tools you're needing, fabricating you can get at your local harbor freight. Generally very cheap.. and something that will work. That you can modify and not..
My T&C 30th Anniversary made it to 134,000 then one day CEL. Dealer says “Cylinder Head Replacement” $3000. Because I was keeping this past the monthly loan payments I bought the FCA Max Care Lifetime Warranty. Smart move $900 Oil Filter Housing plus $2000 in other warranty work since new.

LOL thanks man 🙏😄 I decided sharing reality was far more honest and encouraging to others than making it look effortless and smooooth. My dad always said the difference between a pro golfer and a really good golfer was in their ability to get themselves out of jams successfully. I apply that to everything I do. I know I'm going to fail, but can I recover? I usually do with a little creative problem solving and a wholotta grace 😄
Hopefully you caught it before it ate your cam. If it did I have read a new cam is about $300. That’s not bad. Come back and let me know how it went!! Praying for your success 🙏

Any corrosive resistance will not last 100k miles. And I have read the same about anti-seize and it’s not true. If you use permatex anti seize it has been formulated to work with no change in torque value. Read the instructions and it says for spark plugs in aluminum heads…. And see #6 DIRECTIONS FOR USE 1. Clean mating surfaces before application 2. For best results, apply to clean, dry surfaces. 3. Clean surfaces with Permatex Brake & Parts Cleaner. 4. Wire brush any loose surface rust. 5. Apply Anti Seize to the parts that require protection. 6. Reassemble parts using normal torque values. 7. Wipe off excess material. 8. Clean brush on aerosol product to make future applications easier.
Christ in your life is a beam of light! Your a great influence! You are a spiritual fruit tree my man! You taught alot in this video and how to fix the rockers lol
Out of curiosity have you ever replaced the oil filter cooler/housing? They are a well known source of leaks. I replaced mine at 100k when I replaced the plugs since you have to pull the intake off to get at the bank one plugs.
I replaced my oil cooler in October 2023. Seals were shot. It went real quick since I knew how to get at it :) No video though. It was right before a surgery and I was not in a good place to make a video.
Thank You so much for this! I have to tackle this job as soon as I'm finished with a suspension overhaul on my old Subaru, and your video took away a lot of the trepidation I had. Special thanks for including the size of the cam phaser end bolts and the cap bolts. Again, great job.
I have to say, that was an awesome and raw video. I have a 2015 Jeep Gramd Cherokee with the same engine but rear wheel drive so my engine belts face the front of the vehicle, not transversely mounted. It was awesme to watch you repair the problem and NOT pay a dealer or shop upwards of $600 to do the job. WIth your knowledge you will be able to go back in for a variiety of repairs and know what to do and know how to fix the problem or at lelast have a much better idea. I have an oil leak and think the culprit is a wire cought between the valve cover and head. Any way, awesome video. Thanks for sharing.
I appreciate your encouraging words 😁🙏 FYI After this job I later discovered a minor valve cover leak above the alternator. When I lowered the head cover down I did not notice the plastic shield that protects the alternator had made its way between the engine and head cover. Uhhhg! I had to go back in and reseat it. But it only took 30 mins. Practice makes perfect.
I've had 4 vehicles with the pentastar. 2 that ran 5w 30 and 2 that ran 0w 30. Both 0w 30 engines had to have top end work. So, word of advice. Don't use any oil below w5 30. It's too low a viscosity to lubricate the roller rockers properly. Thus, the nasty tic.
Oil is very important. I always run manufactures spec. But in this case, assuming you use quality oil and change your fluid frequently, the rocker failure according to its previous owner (FCA) is due to inconsistent manufacturing quality. Some of the rockers are going to fail no matter what you do.
Did you have the tick constantly at the same volume or was it mostly noticeable when driving when you hit the gas a bit more abruptly? That’s what it was like for me, when the engine got more torque-y then I heard the clank clank clank. Iv seen some videos or people mention that the lifters should also be replaced. I do have a bid of a shudder when at a stop or idleing and idk I think that’s also a transmission thing? I noticed when I hit the gas a bit harder the engine acted weird aside from the tick, almost like it was shuddering then too. Idk if it’s worth doing the rocker arms when you might also need a new transmission or transmission fluid change . You made this look very do able though and not intimidating . Admittedly I’d have to watch it a few times to digest bc I’m not a mechanic at all and have to go over all the tools etc
The tick was constant. I decided the lifters were not worth my time for one reason... I have driven cars for many years and I have never lost a lifter. It happens. But its rare. And from what I researched, yes people replace them but I did not see a pattern of confirmed bad lifters. I decided to save my money. Its hard to tell what your shudder is without actually being there, and even then its can be hard to diagnose. I have heard of a common problem with engine mounts getting tired and causing a shudder like feeling. And if you plan on keeping the van, then yes I would fix that rocker before it got worse. The failed rocker leads to a failed camshaft. It just gets worse and more expensive the longer you let it go. I do have a lot of tools and I have been in the garage working on cars since I was a kid. But I dont get to exercise engine repair very often anymore. Engines just last longer than they used to! But I dont know if this project is something I would try if I had limited tools and little mechanic experience. I hope you can get your issues sorted out 🙏
Do you know if this can cause code p0349 camshaft position sensor? Also related to p1DD2 ? Lol I literally got these codes today so now idk if it’s related.
@@heythere6983 When my rocker started ticking very loudly I did not have any engine codes. I suspect you have a short/rusty wire? or a bad sensor. And its possible the p0349 is causing the p1dd2.
Yeah I read they may be related. I hope it’s just a dirty connection, I saw a video of someone just cleaning the connection at the sensor and it fixed it. A shop recently left my entire engine covered in sand and dust from their parking lot and I hope all I need to do is clean it, they managed to say it never even had an engine cover which is false so it was returned with no cover and sand all over
Started with conventional factory spec oil. Quaker State usually. Then switched at around 100k to the same stuff that I was using on my Cadillac ATS (turbo car) Valvoline Advanced Synthetic, 5w20 spec. I change the oil in my vehicles often. The van and Truck get oil changes at less than 5k intervals. And always right before the hard winter for those cold harsh winter starts. I added a remote starter to the van as well so my wife and kids can get in with it warmed up 👍
I’ve always replaced both banks. If one fails, the rest aren’t far behind. The worst was at the dreadful used car dealership where many of the Chargers that I fixed had 5 or so failed rockers and some had even fallen out of placed
The rockers have manufacturing defects. They dont all fail the same. I inspected all of the rest on the one side and they had zero play. And since I was under deadline I decided to call it done. So far so good 😃
@@sstressfldo they always fail? I thought that issue was mostly resolved. I really like the Ram 1500 with the 3.6 Pentastar. The big question is the oil weight. From what I understand the 0w20 is recommended however Chryer engineers didn't like that idea. It's prob best to go 5w30?
@@joeb2588 Chrysler said the rockers fail due to manufacture defect. The metal falls apart. It’s not an oiling problem. I would stick with the manufacturers oil spec. And not all of them fail. You could go the lifetime of the vehicle without a problem 👍
Too many people use WD-40 for incorrect purposes. WD-40 is a great product for cleaning and water displacement if you study the history of the product. Products say what they do on the label. If you need a Penetrating Oil use Kroil Kano Aerokroil Penetrating Oil. If you need a corrosion preventative use ACF-50. They say on the label what their purpose. is. Thanks for doing the video, good job.
Just needed a light thin oil to help the plug slide. It worked perfectly for the purpose. And yes wd40 is a good safe cleaner but not a good long term lubricant.
I appreciate you including the mistakes! It definitely helps to be reminded of what could be overlooked. Also, Rockauto is the only place to buy parts!!!
None that I saw. I changed the oil as soon as I heard the noise thinking I could somehow fix it with fresh oil lol. I didnt put too many miles on it before I tore it down. Thanks for the kind words!
I'm aware and Ive seen it done. Warnings about being careful to avoid damage. I decided to follow the manufacturers guidelines instead and remove the cams.
This job is awaiting me. I am very hesitant to tackle because of the delicate nature of the camshafts and timing chains. I have moderate experience as a diy home mechanic and can do most basic maintenance on cars. However, I don’t have much experience using a torque wrench, is there one you recommend to use or get for this?
I know it can be intimidating. But you can pay $20 and get access to an online manual at alldatadiy.com. It helps! In this video I’m using a 33 year old craftsman beam 3/8 torque wrench. Ive always liked beam for fine work cuz sometimes the click/beep style can randomly fail. You can find a beam style on Amazon for $20-$50 range. Read the reviews! You’ll find one that will do the job for you 👍 Praying for your patience, preparation, planning and successful completion of this project 🙏🙏🙏
Thanks for showing that dad's can do this. There are excellent videos in legit shops...but us dads are working in less than ideal circumstances. This video and your transmission video helped me build confidence. I have a 2011 with 141k and just finished the rear (I did the front a couple weeks ago). The front set went just fine...the back was much more challenging - time will tell if I got it right :). I had two bad rockers and two that were going bad.
Hello, i had the same problem with 2014 3.6 jeep grand cherokee... i replaced all lifters & Rockers... put everything back together, really excited about it... it ended up not turning over just cranks... really disappointed...
I read a forum post of that happening and the guy found out that the rockers he bought from Amazon were too thick and were keeping the valves open. So he paid for brand name and replaced the bad ones and it started right up! Maybe that’s your issue!?
That’s very kind of you! Growing up, I was the same way with my dad. Once he started working I was right there. I’ve always enjoyed wrenching and chatting! God bless you 🙏🤗
This is by far the most friendliest & informative video I have stumbled upon on this issue. I've been looking up videos for about 2 months on and off. I have a 2016 Chrysler 300 S that has developed this issue a 105k miles ☹️. Thought it was because I went over changing my oil by like 2000 miles, but the oil change did not help it was too late.. I wish that I knew someone locally who could perform this repair for me! But I have a warranty and will dreadfully have to take it to the dealership I guess. . I hate how my car sounds! Lol ,😆 like a lawn mower it's so embarrassing!
Thank you for the kind words! That's very encouraging and I agree, the sound made our vehicle sound so junky! I hated it too. But it can be fixed and your car will be smooth and once again... even better that you have a warramty to cover the repair 🙏 Thanks again for the feedback.

@@joeengelhardt6447 Thank you Joe 🙏I havent heard it but from what you've described I would be tempted to change my oil and filter. I would use a good synthetic with the factory recommended weight. If not get in their with a good stethoscope or even a wood broom handle (rest one end against the engine the other against your ear) and listen to the inside of the engine. Hopefully it's just a simple fix. Praying for you brother!
@sstressfl hey there it's Joe i took apart the top end of my 21 challenger 3.6 litre and found my ticking problem I inspected the rocker arms took them out of the car.the were in excellent condition.but I found a few spongy valve lash adjusters on the passenger side bank one. Awesome vid. I learned so much. I have a charger and now I know if one of my rockers fails i can change it out by going back watching you do it.... Thank you souch for posting.
Thanks so much for your video…..between your video and another one I found…I was able to replace 2 of the rockers that went bad. And now, no knocking!!! I felt the same relief you did at the end of the video when I finished the 1.5 day job. I checked all 24 rockers.
Those torx heads are troublesome. Should have done all of the rockers, and lifters too. I just did this on my kid's challenger. Less miles too. 1 bad arm, which damaged the cam, but I found a few lifters (valve lash adjusters) were soft too. Dodge makes crappy stuff lol
I did a bunch of research before I started. Mechanics say it’s super rare for a lifter to fail on the 3.6. I inspected them. They weren’t broken and looked and felt like new so I skipped it. Plus the rocker failure is manufacturer defect. Not all of them are bad. 10000+ miles and still smooooth and quiet. No regrets. Plus we plan on trading it in soon. Just keeping her going down the road. Sorry you had to do the cam as well! But I bet it’s solid now.
Sadly no this issue is due to manufacture defect. The oem rockers are not made with consistent metal quality. Some fail. And I stick with the recommended manufactures spec’d oil but after 100k miles I started using synthetic.
So I’m considering buying a 2014 300 that just had the rocker arms and cans replaced. Would it be a good vehicle then? Or does that lead to further problems? It was done at the dealer
Hi great video...!!! Congratulations I have a question.. you just changed the rockers on it. Correct? Didn't have to change any of the camshafts?. For How long time did you wait until you did the repair? (Since you started listening the ticking noise) So you can save the camshaft from damage because the bad arm rockers.? Thank you
Very nice!! I really appreciate you answer..! I have little bit more than 5 weeks with the same noice. And I was worry about the time until I do the repairs.. I think I still on time even if I have to wait for 1 more month I guess... Thank you so much for you video and time to answer me
@Michael Byrne For 2016, FCA released an updated version of the 3.6 L engine. This engine features upgrades to the variable valve timing (VVT) system, two-stage variable valve lift (VVL), a new intake manifold, new valve springs, new piston rings, new fuel injectors, new ignition coils, a cooled EGR, lower internal friction and lower weight. It also features a higher compression ratio, increased from 10.2:1 to 11.3:1. These improvements increase power as well as efficiency.[12] The new version no longer supports flex-fuel capability.
Of course there's a paper towel in each cylinder now, 😏 but that's part of our "inner engine wipe down" service 🤔 normally we charge extra for that 🤠 This time, No Charge😉
Thank you for the great video, I enjoyed the Christian music and Positive attitude without the foul Language, God Bless! and pray for me as I go about the same venture.
Great video. You have inspired me. I ve watched your video a few times and learned more each time. Great to learn from some of your minor fails. We have a few local wreckers that you can go in and take the parts you need. A great place to practice taking things apart. I was wondering if you had any cam damage caused by the bad rocker? I hope to find a good cam at the wrecker if mine is damaged. I pray my van sounds like yours when I am done by the "Grace of God".
Hi Michael I did it me to man the only thing is I didn't know how to line up the camshaft, the time you Went under the car That's the Part I didn't know how to do it So I released the three clips of the camshaft and I leave the 1 near to the chain that Way I was able to remove the two rockers I know it's not the right way , I was thinking to remove 12 but I Couldn't Thanks you for the video
Thanks for sharing! When I went t u day the car, I put a ratchet in the bolt in the center of the crankshaft pulley. That allowed me to rotate the engine. I’m so glad you did it! Job well done 🙏
I watched one mechanic here on YT that didnt even remove the cams to do this job . It was on a Jeep. He loosened the cam caps and one by one removed the rocker arms and lifters with a magnet . And then replaced them one by one working the cam shaft from back to front .
@@sstressfl yes sir , there's always that chance . I just had my wife's 300 done at 150000 miles . They replaced all of the lifters , rocker arms , two cam shafts , both timing chains , tensioners and rails . It was expensive but, a whole lot less than buying a new car .
@@watsamatau Hey thats awesome. Same conversation my wife and I had when i suggested trading it in... the fix is cheap compared to that monthly payment. Nice job!
I would have changed the oil and filter to get rid of any metal particles that may be in the system from the bad cam and rocker. But, great job anyway!
I did this job on my 2013 Chrysler Town and Country. I also had only one bad rocker, and I was able to change it without even removing cam phasers. Bad news: by the next year another rock went! So, I did the whole job--all twenty four on both sides. No trouble since then. Van has over 250,000 on it now.
I need to do this project. The only thing that scares me is the timing. I am still blurry on what you did to make your marks line up when you went down underneath. What are you looking for specifically there? Thanks again!
My friend, there are some very detailed videos out there showing step by step instructions. But even with those it’s not always as easy as it might look in a video. I meant for this video to help others by showing my mistakes.
Did you have any misfire codes on the failed rocker cylinder? I think this is whats wrong with mine. Cylinder 2, code P0302. I have replaced everything else hoping this wasnt the problem. But looks like it.
Years ago someone lost their guinea pig. I was headed to an appointment when I saw it run out in the street, and I managed to dodge it, but there was no way I could catch it. Being winter the little guy needed a place to stay warm. When I took my car in for an oil change I found out where it was living. What a mess! So I feel for this guy having to clean up after a rodent invasion. I’m just thankful it didn’t eat my wiring.!
Wow!! Ya know it seems every time I go near a shop they seem to start at $1000 no matter what it is! How can anyone afford that? I’m so thankful to have tools and RUclips lol
I've been a professional technician over multiple brands. Big props for Showing your failures. You learn more from failures than success. Believe it or not the same stuff goes on behind closed doors at the dealerships.
I appreciate it my friend 🙏 That is exactly how I have learned over the years. Ya gotta do, and not be afraid to fail. And yes, I believe you!
Dodge has to many fails. So much to learn then. Better to learn from car makers that don’t fail so we can create a reliable vehicle based on what actually works. US automakers have a lot to learn.
@@velvetbear7184 I have read and heard good things about changes Stellantis is making at Mopar to deliver higher quality vehicles.
@midship_nc huge time saving and awesome tips. Thanks for sharing 🙏

I appreciate the encouragement 🙏 I’m not! Absolutely that’s why I covered mine with foam insulation! That cable has a memory and wants to go back to the terminal 👍

I am so Thankful I talked my wife out of buying a Dodge Caravan and instead buying a Toyota. I got a friend that just purchased a Journey they needed very badly and 3 days later find out it has a cracked cylinder head.
We’re looking at the Toyota awd hybrid for our next van 👍
They have the lowest cost of ownership over the lifetime of the vehicle and highest resale and trade in values so they make the most sense financially. They may be a bit higher up front than the competition, but over the time you own it you will spend less money. Rav 4 vs. GMC Acadia the Acadia is cheaper up front , but will cost you an arm and a leg in repairs down the road. Better to buy quality up front IMO. All vehicles are a Crap shoot so you might as well bet on the car maker that has the best odds which is Lexus 1st and Toyota 2nd.

This is an accurate portrayal of all the sh** that happens when you try to do a big repair on your own vehicle.
Where did you learn how to be able to fix cars? Nice video 👍
My dad worked for the phone company, but on thr weekends he worked on his race car. If he was in the garage, I was right there with him. He taught me a lot. Most new plugs have antiseize plating on them. I read that it isn't recommended to use anti-seize because it can cause you to over torque the plugs.
Any corrosive resistance will not last 100k miles. And I have read the same about anti-seize and it’s not true. If you use permatex anti seize it has been formulated to work with no change in torque value. Read the instructions and it says for spark plugs in aluminum heads…. And see #6
DIRECTIONS FOR USE
1. Clean mating surfaces before application
8. Clean brush on aerosol product to make future
applications easier.

A shop recently left my entire engine covered in sand and dust from their parking lot and I hope all I need to do is clean it, they managed to say it never even had an engine cover which is false so it was returned with no cover and sand all over
What brand oil did you use? Very clean internals. Ive used mobil 1 on my cars and had similar results. Also what interval did you change the oil
So far so good 😃
I did just the passenger side on my wrangler 20,000 miles ago. Still no ticks on the driver’s side.
@@sstressfl thanks for the info! From what I understand, it's a pretty reliable engine.
Sometimes its the little hydraulic lifter that gets stuck closed
Very rare especially with a clean engine with consistent oil changes. But yes collapsed lifters do happen.
I appreciate you including the mistakes! It definitely helps to be reminded of what could be overlooked.
Also,
Rockauto is the only place to buy parts!!!
Thank you! And rockauto had the best prices on this stuff too! RA is always my first stop when I'm shopping for car parts 👍
Did you have any metal flakes in your filter before the ticking started ? Very helpful video !
None that I saw. I changed the oil as soon as I heard the noise thinking I could somehow fix it with fresh oil lol. I didnt put too many miles on it before I tore it down. Thanks for the kind words!
😊you actually dont have to remove the cams, just loosen the caps and move the crank so the valves are opposite of max lift and they will slide out.
I'm aware and Ive seen it done. Warnings about being careful to avoid damage. I decided to follow the manufacturers guidelines instead and remove the cams.
Now you can see why so many people hate Chrysler.. if it's not one thing it's six others..
Factss!! 😂😂
I just experienced endless nightmare problems with my GM too. Poor quality vendor components due to stress on lowest bid.
Thank you for your kindness the lords wish Jorge Garcia Dallas Texas
God bless you brother 🙏❤️
My big human, Christian, Ukrainian thank you, Brother! The entire video is enormously encouraging. Thank you, Jesus! Thank you indeed..
God bless you brother 🙏
I appreciate the feedback! Saving money and using what ya got. It’s what us dads do for the family 💪 I’m sure they appreciate your hard work.
Wish I had a crazy neighbor like you. I'd been right there next to you if you let me! God bless!
But it can be fixed and your car will be smooth and once again... even better that you have a warramty to cover the repair 🙏 Thanks again for the feedback.
love your video i am about to check out my 3.6 l engine today. i have a 2021 challenger gt with 30,000 kms . ticks loud in the morning them go quiet . when its warm you hear a trio of ticking as it shifts through the gears from 1500 to 3000 under light accereration. im praying to JESUS to help me correct my ticking 3.6 litre pentastar. awsome video
@@joeengelhardt6447 Thank you Joe 🙏I havent heard it but from what you've described I would be tempted to change my oil and filter. I would use a good synthetic with the factory recommended weight. Then get a new oil filter like a fram tough guard and see if the noise stops.
I replaced all 12 valve lash adjusters . On the drivers side I did not find any defective rocker arms or valve lash adjusters. I put it back together and it is very quiet now and the car performs very well I am happy. Thank you for your video that inspired me to take on this job.and thank you to my Lord Jesus to guide me along.
@@joeengelhardt6447 The rockers feel like quality pieces! Shame there are some with defective bearings. So glad you inspected and found your issue and resolved it. Such a wonderful feeling of completion! God bless you brother! I hope you had a Merry Christmas.
I have 140k on my '13 T&C. Trying to get my wife to sell it before this happens.
Praying you can hold off for just a little while. The car market is horrible right now. Hopefully prices will drop as we roll into winter.
Kudos on showing the failures, takes balls to do that, but that's how we learn. ;)
Thank you my friend. Its definitely how we learn. Cannot be afraid to fail. We only get better with every mistake.
Awesome vid. I learned so much. I have a charger and now I know if one of my rockers fails i can change it out by going back watching you do it.... Thank you souch for posting.
Thanks for the feedback 🙏 Lets hope you never need new rockers! :) Thanks Jay!
Thanks so much for your video…..between your video and another one I found…I was able to replace 2 of the rockers that went bad. And now, no knocking!!! I felt the same relief you did at the end of the video when I finished the 1.5 day job. I checked all 24 rockers.
Awesome work 💪🙌 I’m glad my vid helped some 🙏
Those torx heads are troublesome.
Bless you, brother. Now I know about that annoying sound from my van.
Praying for a successful and affordable repair. God bless you 🙏
amazing how a $10 part can ruin an engine if not taken care of quickly.. Great vid!!
Ohh so true! Great way to look at it. Thanks for the kindness 🙏
@@sstressfl almost makes me want to buy a dodge just to do this repair. so satisfying.
@@richardschneiderman1141lol there are many who would let you do theirs I’m sure! 😂
Does going a weight up on the oil help prevent this issue? I believe they say to use 5w30 instead of 5w20.
Nah...once you do it, it is fixed. The rocker arms are a manufacturer defect. You're replacing it with an improved part.
Hi great video...!!! Congratulations
I have a question.. you just changed the rockers on it. Correct? Didn't have to change any of the camshafts?. For How long time did you wait until you did the repair? (Since you started listening the ticking noise) So you can save the camshaft from damage because the bad arm rockers.? Thank you
We drove 3 months with the noise before I was able to get to it. And yes just the rockers were replaced. Lifters were perfect. Cams were perfect.
Very nice!! I really appreciate you answer..! I have little bit more than 5 weeks with the same noice. And I was worry about the time until I do the repairs.. I think I still on time even if I have to wait for 1 more month I guess...
Thank you so much for you video and time to answer me
Indeed, by the grace of God (Whose I am and Whom I serve in my case.) Thanks for showing the "obstacles you overcame.
Amen brother 🙏❤️
But then again the 2012- 2015 pentastar had the most problems my understanding the 2016 model to present day was redesign
I hope so! My Dad has the 2016! I hope his Pentastar is solid.
@Michael Byrne I have the 2018 Grand Cherokee so far no problems knock on wood I think fca addressed those engine issues time will tell though
How did you get to those front brackets without taking out the fan???? Thanks brother!
If you mean the two steel brackets that hold the manifold, I used a box end wrench from underneath :)
Of course there's a paper towel in each cylinder now, 😏 but that's part of our "inner engine wipe down" service 🤔 normally we charge extra for that 🤠
This time, No Charge😉
😂😂😂
Thank you for the great video, I enjoyed the Christian music and Positive attitude without the foul Language, God Bless! and pray for me as I go about the same venture.
Praying the Lord guides your hand to success 🙏🙏🙏 I appreciate the feedback brother 🙏❤️
Thank you for the kind words! And thankfully I had no cam damage. I'll join you in that prayer. All is grace indeed :)
Hi Michael I did it me to man the only thing is I didn't know how to line up the camshaft, the time you Went under the car That's the Part I didn't know how to do it
So I released the three clips of the camshaft and I leave the 1 near to the chain that Way I was able to remove the two rockers
I know it's not the right way , I was thinking to remove 12 but I Couldn't
Thanks you for the video
Thanks for sharing! When I went t u day the car, I put a ratchet in the bolt in the center of the crankshaft pulley. That allowed me to rotate the engine. I’m so glad you did it! Job well done 🙏
I watched one mechanic here on YT that didnt even remove the cams to do this job . It was on a Jeep. He loosened the cam caps and one by one removed the rocker arms and lifters with a magnet . And then replaced them one by one working the cam shaft from back to front .
I saw that too, but it has risks to cam damage so I decided speed was not more important. So I followed the manufacturers instructions 👍
Nice job!
Very good job,by the grace of God..
I would have changed the oil and filter to get rid of any metal particles that may be in the system from the bad cam and rocker. But, great job anyway!
I changed it right before I did the job. And I change my oil often. Seen how clean the engine is? 👍
@@sstressfl Yes, it looked very clean.
I watched your whole video it was interesting good job but what stood out most is the fact you kept God in it
Thank you! It just kinda comes out of me. He set me on solid ground when I was 33. I am so thankful everyday to know Jesus 🙏
Now that you have it fixed keep the lucas oil and pensoil out of it.
That brands of oil get thick around 2.000 miles and tears up engines.
I use valvoline advanced synthetic. Works well 👍
I need to do this project. The only thing that scares me is the timing. I am still blurry on what you did to make your marks line up when you went down underneath. What are you looking for specifically there? Thanks again!
This guy does an amazing job of step by step instructions for doing this job. This is part 1. ruclips.net/video/XkrwxVVcjsg/видео.html
Watching the video,, but I ill appreciate for you to show how to remove and replace everything back,,
My friend, there are some very detailed videos out there showing step by step instructions. But even with those it’s not always as easy as it might look in a video. I meant for this video to help others by showing my mistakes.
@@sstressfl yeah you got a point there,,,
Did you have any misfire codes on the failed rocker cylinder? I think this is whats wrong with mine. Cylinder 2, code P0302. I have replaced everything else hoping this wasnt the problem. But looks like it.
Years ago someone lost their guinea pig. I was headed to an appointment when I saw it run out in the street, and I managed to dodge it, but there was no way I could catch it. Being winter the little guy needed a place to stay warm. When I took my car in for an oil change I found out where it was living. What a mess! So I feel for this guy having to clean up after a rodent invasion. I’m just thankful it didn’t eat my wiring.!
wow! and the mechanic want to charge me more than 1,000 dollars to do that job, he said have to pull down the engine to change it all lifters
Wow!! Ya know it seems every time I go near a shop they seem to start at $1000 no matter what it is! How can anyone afford that? I’m so thankful to have tools and RUclips lol
