- Is this the best soldering heat mat for plumbing? Will it fall apart like all the others?
Does your soldering heat mat always fall apart? Does it catch on fire? Does it have holes in it that let through heat? Well this is my little test to see if I can make a better heat mat for soldering copper pipe. I'm using cement board and piano hinge to do it. Let me know what you think - enjoy!

Thank you James I have been wanting to know what's the best thing to use and cement board looks the best at the min mate
I've been using a bit of aluminium sheet for a few years now, easy to shape and can be cut down to any size.
I cut up old flues from boilers, suprimas are my favourite
Lid off an old box of Quality street works well.
N.B *The tin one not the plastic one*
Thats a bloody good idea...nice one😊👍
Bloody genius mate
And those arms, oooooooooshaaa!!!
Great idea...
Also with a heat mat trying to wedge it or hold it up
Always the loose stringy bits catch fire
Nice work sar
great idea with the cement board .. haven been on for a while .. Dude your looking well .. 💪
Love how you propped it up against your radio Jimmy
I'm not certain I can get that sort of board here, I might try it with some fermacell board, might work as good as yours 👍. I don't bother with heat mats either, too expensive. I just throw damp paper towel, the crap rose coloured ones that we all have a roll of in the van, against the walls, round pipes etc. I don't solder, I braze everything with an oxygen/acetylene torch so it would definitely be fine with a little blow torch.
The A-Team channel. Wasssup fool.
Tile backer board is the best. The 1/4" works as well as the 1/2" and it will not ignite. A section of galvanized vent pipe will work, but it can transfer heat to whatever it is protecting. I poke a hole in the top of a plastic water (wah-uh} bottle and spray anything that got scorched.
100% need to patent!
Hardbacker is A1 rated, you are fine 🙂
Hi, i was told to wet the matt, so it would not burn. i do use this method, Ps and not wet through but damp. HOLD TIGHT.
Gotta call it ‘The beast flap’
Yeah I moved to using fireproof board once I realised heat mats are utterly crap. And yes you should patent that hinged board!
Oh man ...where did you get that respirator mask??
Holding 15mm pipe while heating it ouch! 🤣
Jim's 💯🔥🔥😂😂😂
Asbestos hands brooooo!
i was thinking the same he has hand of asbestos or has burnt all the nerve endings away hahah
Does anyone know what the fine torch tip James is using in this video is called? Can you post a link? Thanks.

@@plumberparts Had my Rothenberger bruner for about 20 years, recent ignition problems bought Rothenberger Superfire 2 and Quick Fire Complete Service Repair Kit to get the Piezo ignition; fitted this swirl flame at the same time. Really want to get the old Fine Tip but no longer available?
I tried cement backer before and it de-laminated with the heat, loud bang and bits flew off, so be careful.
You could call it the hold tight heat protractor
"Unhinge the heat!" sounds like a great name. Or similar.
Better idea: Don't hinge it. Tape it with a few layers of aluminum duct tape. Easier and faster! And the tape offers an extra layer of heat insulation.
I've got loads of this stuff laying about....could easily replace a knackered bit with another offcut and save myself POUNDAGE
You said that using Hardiebacker for inside the chamber when installing wood burning stoves was “a bit naughty,” I thought it was ok as it’s non combustible? Or were you referring to people actually mounting the stove on them?
@@jewelcitizen2567 EVERYTHING is naughty!
@@plumberparts Classic lmao… 👌🏻
@@plumberparts told my wife that and she divorced me 😂😂😂😂🍻🍻🍻🍻🍺
Call it ‘heaty backer’?
Nice lot of bodging as normal James what would the fire service do with out you
Get a pay cut - all that sliding down shiny poles!
@@plumberparts yes they have a picture of you in the station said your ther best customer they have ever had
Sod that!
Get yourself a nice piece of asbestos cloth
Works a belter bud ;)
Call it Minge on heat
You're meant to wet the omat good sir, I made this mistake also
Wetting them only prolongs their life by about 1 day in my experience!
@@plumberparts I've had my omat about a year, only 2 minor scorch marks on there, but I do agree they aren't as good as cement board
James, nothing to do with the video but could you explain the reason for making a 22mm MALE x 15mm female reducer. The 22mm male end needs another 22mm straight connector as far as I can see. I can’t think what specific job they are for apart from street joints. It is not always clear what you are buying since the spec isn’t often given. Yours, hesitant diy plumber!
well, Well, WELL ? 😂
Asbestos cloth
fed up with buying new mats and them not lasting or just catching fire.
The rothenburger ones are shit , delicate soldering required on a job snd went through 4 of the things , do people still damp them with water ?
Never knew about damping
Just don't aim at the huuuge metal hinge for too long 😐
