  • Is this the best soldering heat mat for plumbing? Will it fall apart like all the others?
Does your soldering heat mat always fall apart? Does it catch on fire? Does it have holes in it that let through heat? Well this is my little test to see if I can make a better heat mat for soldering copper pipe. I'm using cement board and piano hinge to do it. Let me know what you think - enjoy!

I'm not certain I can get that sort of board here, I might try it with some fermacell board, might work as good as yours 👍. I don't bother with heat mats either, too expensive. I just throw damp paper towel, the crap rose coloured ones that we all have a roll of in the van, against the walls, round pipes etc. I don't solder, I braze everything with an oxygen/acetylene torch so it would definitely be fine with a little blow torch.

Tile backer board is the best. The 1/4" works as well as the 1/2" and it will not ignite. A section of galvanized vent pipe will work, but it can transfer heat to whatever it is protecting. I poke a hole in the top of a plastic water (wah-uh} bottle and spray anything that got scorched.

Better idea: Don't hinge it. Tape it with a few layers of aluminum duct tape. Easier and faster! And the tape offers an extra layer of heat insulation.

James, nothing to do with the video but could you explain the reason for making a 22mm MALE x 15mm female reducer. The 22mm male end needs another 22mm straight connector as far as I can see. I can’t think what specific job they are for apart from street joints. It is not always clear what you are buying since the spec isn’t often given. Yours, hesitant diy plumber!
