I go gravel riding but never come across routes as bad as that, well done, also a little tip for punctures and getting tyres back on, they feel tight because the rest of the tyre is sat on the edge of the rim, push all the tyre into the middle of the rim there’s a little dip then when you use the tyre levers to put the rest of the tyre on it’ll give some slack to slide over the rim 😊

I was told to only use tyre levers to remove a tyre there's a risk you may puncture the tube if you use them putting the tyre back on. I don't know what the equivalent of touch wood is to assuage the Demons of Deflation, touch rubber sounds inappropriate.

@@granthardy3550 I’ve always used the plastic tyre levers, never had any issues, I put a bit of air in the tube to give it shape so it doesn’t get trapped 😁 my road tyres are a nightmare, very tight fitting but if I push them into middle of the rim, I notice a big difference in fitting them

    • @John64125

Amy, two good tips here. If you push the tyre into the middle of the rim you should be able to put it on with your thumbs. Those look like strong tyres but it should be possible. Also always put a bit of air in the tube or you’ll catch it and end up with another puncture and no tube.
It’s a practice thing but pushing the tyre into the centre of the wheel is the big difference. I also have some washing up liquid in a plastic pot to smear round the wheel rim. That makes life really easy but don’t over do it or you have soap on the tyre.

I also had to learn this the hard way, Amy. A puncture on a tubeless ready rim. The middle of the rim is deeper. The secret is to put the side wall of the tire in this deeper section to get the rest of it over the rim side.
(yes, i'm riding tubeless on one of my cycocross bikes to lower the pressure, but on my road bike I stay with inner tubes. But the rims are TLR, so I had the same issue on my one and only puncture.Still had the Conti 5000s mounted, the bike came with. Then I changed them after the puncture.... With old non TLR-rims the change was easier.

Crankbrothers Speedier Tyre Lever or also make sure no air in innertube and just keep going around the tyre pushing to the centre of the wheel where it is the deepest and persevere because it will give you very small amounts each time. If you don't it will not work. There is a knack to it and once you've got it you will understand.

Spotted the title - thought this should be a good lark. You managed great Amy! Bummer about the puncture, I had a ride recently where I fixed 5(!) punctures - also very short on distance but not on time! So annoying. For tyres look for ones with a kevlar bead (they fold up) rather than wire, way easier to get off and on. Also always pinch the bead away from the rim edge into the middle of the rim well, all round the tyre - this loosens the bead up so that it can move more easily. Definitely put sludge in your tubes, a must for offroad riding. No need to remove the tyre just pump it up again and you're off.

Tubeless still requires regular maintenance, more so in my opinion. If the bike doesn’t get ridden at least once a week, the sealant will pool in one spot and harden. Then she has to learn how to use a plug kit, especially for a thorn the size that caused her flat- and she still has to carry spare tubes in case the tears are too big for a plug. Dealing with punctures is easier with tubeless until it isn’t.

    • @Sozzled39
      @Sozzled39 8 месяцев назад

@@petesjk sealant doesn't pool and harden in a week. Decent sealant lasts at least 3 months. And since the thorn stayed in the tyre, it's unlikely she would have even realised she had a puncture.

Some basic old school alloy type Mavic type rims and all that drama is avoided. Those larger section tyres can in most cases be almost totally be pushed on by fingers and thumbs. Always worth practising in the garage at home so you know you can do it if alone . Yep the thorns slide in easy this time of the Year after all the hedge cutting.. Still will be a nicer ride in the better Weather .

Looks like storms have created some work for trail maintenance crews. The trick for mounting tires is to seat bead of the tire in the middle channel, which should allow more slack for the other bead to get over the rim. Some rims are just notorious for being difficult, and the trend toward wider rims will only make this worse. A tire mounting tool that provides more leverage is becoming more popular.

Bottom prong sits against back rim, Top prong hooks under tyre, pulling it onto the wheel. Practise a couple of times at home, problem eradicated when you're miloneys from home on the

With your spare tube carry a contact lens case filled with washing liquid so when you get to the tight part of the tyre lubricate the rim and tyre edge so it slips over the rim easy always works for me as my wheels/tyres are a very tight fit.

Had a punctured recently and a few days later changed the tyres and I noticed that the new tyres were much easier to get on and off with my bike.
Wheel size, tyre thickness, tyre type probably make a difference, so you must have an unlucky combination. Plus, I realise after trying different ones in the process, tyre levers are really different. Maybe worth trying a few different ones on your bikes before you go out, find a combination of levers and tyres you know you can use, and take them on your trips if possible.

Tubeless is a suggestion I have seen. For the tire situation. The way I do it after many punctures is a) seat the tire first on the opposite side to the valve. Seat last at the valve B) take your shoes off and and put your feet on top of the wheel with toes between spokes. This often gives you extra purchase to pull up on the tire and over the rim. Weird but works for me.

When putting your tires back on, the bead on both sides of the tire should be unseated and in the channel in the middle of the rim. This will make it easier to get the last bit of tire back on the rim. It’s a good idea to practice this at home before you ride. Of course you can switch to tubeless and carry plugs to fill larger punctures. Small punctures should seal themselves.

I use my gravel bike for poorly surfaced lanes, tarmac, forestry roads and sustrans type trails - I would normally only ride routes like in the video, on my gravel bike in dryer conditions.... and would usually do sloppy muddy trais, rocky trails and singletrack on my mountain bike. I think the more upright stance, wider bars and wider tyres on a mountain bike put you in a more commanding position where you have better control off-road, particularly for downhill, where you can lower your centre of gravity by hanging off the back or by using a dropper post. Is there somebody in your circle of friends who would lend you one to try out? ...or maybe go to a trail centre and hire one/get some coaching - mountain biking is great fun once you get the hang of it, but it doesn't have to be all adrenaline stuff. I usually ride natural trails and mountain tracks and also go bikepacking, which opens up a whole different cycling world!

Well u won't do that again so a great lesson 😅As a rule if u cannot replace or repair a flat at home including tubeless then u definitely won't be able to do it in the rain wind cold darkness .
When I first started mtb and got a flat 10miles from home in the woods , in the dark and raining and I could not fix the flat so had to peddle back on a flat tyre xcountry for 10mikes. Now I always carry spare inner tubes . I dont wanna do that again 😂.
Keep going on the gravel Amy the countryside bridleway stuff is awesome all 4 seasons 💪👍

Haha yes! i have practiced at home and I can do it, spent quite a few evenings practicing but think the coldness played a part in it too!

It's easier to fit folding tyres, with the Kevlar bead proving more manoeuvrable than a metal bead.

Have you considered the tubeless set up?

    I think…it’s time for a new wheel set… try hunt. They have a 60 day return policy…
My last wheel set would take 3 hours to change a wheel. Some tyre combos are impossible.. maybe canyon will allow for a warranty claim??

Get a tyre glider. Much easier to get tyres on and off.

Hehehe and hehehe again to see girls fixing their own punctures !!!! In my experience girls with punctures (punctures on their bikes lol) just normally stand there fluttering their eyelashes at the men on the clubrun to fix them. But seens as its a girls day out then you have to fix them. I do hope no nails where broken in this rare moment captured on video 😂😂
And here's a great instructional video on dealing with tight tires

Using this method will mean you can easily fit right tyres

7:08 there's definitely a knack to getting a tyre back on. It can actually be done with no tyre levers at all as proved by my friend who likes to show off after he's watched someone struggle for a while!

I don't know how susceptible you are to the N+1 problem with bikes, but I'd say you're better off with a hardtail mtb before a gravel bike for building confidence off road, especially muddy conditions. Your weight is further back, the handling is less twitchy and the handlebars are wider. Downside is that it would probably feel slow, especially given how much road riding you do!

It still astounds me that after all these years...
Fancy car, fancy bikes and fancy gear, and yet I never saw, or heard a single bell.
It is common sense and common courtesy, that when taking your bikes onto paths and trails, to have a bell, and use it, but you can only use it if you have one in the first place.
After countless miles of cycling, I actually wear the bells out eventually.
Trouble is I still get put in with the same arrogant group who think the trail is just for them and their bike.

It still astounds me that when I use my bell people take zero notice of it, or even more ironic complain that it startled them !! we all need to be a bit more aware and tolerant

Each to their own, for me I just don’t get this gravel riding.
I can see the MTB thing if you like that kind of thing. Apparently it improves your bike handling skills?
I just don’t see the fun in riding through a field and getting full of mud.

You don't "need" an MTB at all, any bike with the correct tyres will do. Yes it's more of an XC route, but it's more fun on a gravel bike. Ever heard of under biking?

@@amy.cycling.adventures it’s all about confidence, sometimes you seem to mentally talk yourself out of it before you are even hitting the bad stuff, I was the same with MTB I am 58 years old and love it now, but took a few years for me to gain confidence on some of the red trails…

Amy your friends both male & female take on some terrible "gravel" rides This videos one I wouldn't ride in the sunshine let alone in autumn. Re your tyres they appear to be too light for those tracks and with the hole in that tyre Tubeless a plug was not going to fix it and end up with sealant all over your bike and yourself. Stick to riding with your personal mechanic aka Kyle
