@@katyv9716 To play devil's advocate, there is a phenomenon called the "Bystander Effect" where someone is a witness to an event, but decides not to intervene due to them assuming someone else witnessed that same event and may have already intervened and the cycle continues.

Kitty Genovese was not murdered in front of nearly as many witnesses as the NYT reported (38!), and multiple witnesses did call the police upon hearing a struggle. From the wikipedia page about the case, "In 2007, an article in the American Psychologist found "no evidence for the presence of 38 witnesses, or that witnesses observed the murder, or that witnesses remained inactive". In 2016, The New York Times called its own reporting "flawed", stating that the original story "grossly exaggerated the number of witnesses and what they had perceived". I appreciate your point though, and this isn't to say it never happens! Just thought i should share since that particular case is responsible for a lot of misconceptions :)
@@wishingstar8924 I think this is mostly in cases where you can see other people witnessing the same thing you are. In most cases I think it comes down to “what if it’s nothing” “what if it’s nothing and the cops get mad” “what if the neighbors get mad at me” does that make sense? There’s so many cases where neighbors or ppl who hear certain things imperative to a case say the same thing “I thought it wasn’t serious, and if I called and they knew they’d get mad, and I’d feel bad” or “it would have been awkward” there’s even videos of people recording themselves doing normal things and hearing violent situations next door but not doing anything because they “feel awkward” does that make sense? But I do get the bystander effect and it could be very well that some ppl just assume another neighbor hears and calls!
I think he knew what was going on, but didn’t want to call the police, because he didn’t want te believe something bad was going on, it’s you arguing with yourself like, I would waste time, it’s probaly nothing or just a movie that they watch, and the other side would say, this is not normal, I need to call them, but then hope comes in to finish the argument, they hope nothing is going on, hope can sometimes be seen as reality if you believe to strongly in that what you hope, like in this case where he hoped nothing was going on

Even if he was faking hearing voices, a normal healthy teen doesn't seek attention that badly. Something was clearly wrong with him and the system had multiple chances to do something about it and they didn't. The failure to notice that something was wrong with this kid ended up failing his mother too.
He probably has bi polar disorder like horror movies do have a big impact it could also be personality disorder thats why he mightve thought himself as a murderer and my ex stepmom has bi polar disorder and she was always doing something to get my dad in jail to be the victim

Probably cause women (not trying to assume your gender, but it's just a guess) are raised to be caring and nurturing no matter what, while men are raised to be allowed to do whatever the heck they want.
This shows that domestic violence is NOT only between partners and NOT only physical. It can happen to parents and it can include verbal, emotional, psychological abuse as well. This is a tragic case
I wish more people knew this. Everyone always assumes it's a man abusing his girlfriend/wife but it can be parents being abused by their children, children being abused by their siblings, etc. It can happen to anyone regardless of age or gender.

I’ve seen that a lot of domestic violence resources provided by authorities are usually oriented towards people in relationships, even though it also occurs between siblings, parents and children, and with anyone else living in the house. They definitely need to expand more for these kinds of situations
Maybe it’s because he was so young, but I was surprised that he escalated so quickly. Usually domestic abusers start out normal, then escalate through stages before getting to the final stage of homicide. Like you wouldn’t expect one to jump straight from verbal abuse to murder, you’d expect them to go through a phase of beating people up in between. I guess he did beat up his brother, but with his mom it sounds like he just skipped that stage.

Jackie allowed this behavior and set up this disruption. That 14 yr old had TOO much say over anything and his actions was something she shouldve put in line as soon as she saw it. She’s taking care of him and his 6yr old son. I didn’t find out until last week that the car he drives is in her name, she pays the $600 car note and $300 car insurance, she doesn’t work but he does, and SHE HAS TO SELL HER HOUSE TO GET OUT OF DEBT! My mouth flew open and I cried for her. He got mad because she’s moving up north and didn’t tell him! I told her I’d pray for her because she hasn’t learned a lesson. You don’t help people that keep putting themselves in the same situation. She lets her grandson do ALL KINDS of bad things and make excuses without punishing him. I completely banned her grandson from my house. He hits EVERYBODY he play with. He hit my child and my husband went off on her. She said my husband hurt her feelings like she’s not being a good parent! I’m looking at her like “ ok what’s more important your feelings being hurt or your grandson ending up hurt or killed for hitting people!” We just speak and keep it casual now. That kind of parenting is dangerous for anyone that child comes in contact with. I don’t want my child to end up hurting him so that friendship is not worth fighting for.

I called it from the very beginning lol the second I heard the vague "guy in a mask did it" story, I was like "nope, Daniel did it". It sounded to me like a psychopath and I'm actually a bit shocked he wasn't diagnosed with psychopathy, or at least some sort of sociopathic personality disorder. All cases that mention that professionals didn’t deem the person mentally ill or anything the like, but they were just looking for attention.. Going to the toilet in his closet, abusing his younger brother, fighting with people around him to this extent is not something that your day to day person does. Even if he did this for attention, there should be something added to the dsm5 because attention seeking like this is not very common, yet I hear it all the time in these true crime cases.
I feel like it's psychologists/psychiatrists saying that a Non-specified diagnosis is not enough to declare the person mentally incompetent to stand trial. With some of the stuff in here he might've been borderline personality disorder or he might have been deliberately 'malingering' i.e. pretending to have a mental illness because he has researched that it is a means not to be held criminally responsible for the murder he was planning. Generally, for a diagnosis the categorical behaviours have to be seen in multiple environments (minimum two preferably 3 - like school, home, other). The defecation/urination could be viewed as destroying property deliberately to prevent items from being given to his sibling- most parents will give toys one child has grown out of to a younger sibling. The underwear sounds pretty weird from the outside, but it doesn't necessitate a desire for his mother specifically. I've known some kids that did similar shit when in their preteens/teens because they "liked the feel of the material better than a gym sock" and couldn't bring themselves to go out and buy their own wank gear yet. I had the mis/fortune that my mom was the nightshift emergency room nurse alot of my art friends wound up seeing at least once and felt like it meant I was the confessional for their sex-ed experiments/ questions.

@@EMEM663 While there are conditions that can be scientifically tested and diagnosed by medical diagnoses, EEGs, MRIs and noticeable chemical imbalances alot of diagnosis categories require the assessment in multiple environments to prevent misdiagnosing say abuse-responsive actions for anxiety, clinical depression etc.. as for my mom ehhh I wound up making friends with many of them it just was very very difficult keeping my mom from knowing it since they mostly had the survival instincts of a sunfish.

I graduated from college with a psych concentration and there actually is something that fits with some of these symptoms. It's called Conduct Disorder and some of the symptoms from the DSM-5 include: -Bullying, intimidating and threatening others often -Starts fights often -Physically cruel to people or animals -Setting fires, wanting to cause serious damage -Has destroyed other people’s possessions (other methods than setting fire) - which sounds similar to the possible motivation of him defecating/urinating on the toys his mother bought him - -Has stolen things without confronting the victim (his mother's underwear) Rejection by more prosocial (wanting to help people with no expectation of rewards for doing so) peers - he doesn't have really any friends - -Has used a weapon that can result in severe harm to other people. (These items may include bat, knives, broken bottles or bricks)
Plus it's never "just a phase" when a parent just lets their child have all the power and walk all over them. That's how you raise a psychopath. Why should it be your 13-14 year old son's decision weather you move house or not? Like, you're the mother. If mom wants to move, then the kids are moving too. Period.

@@idek7438 yep. Whenever my mom moved us I never questioned her. She always protected us so if we were moving I knew because we had to. I’m not going to ask my child if it’s ok to move. I’ll let them know we’re moving and depending on their maturity I’ll tell them why. My mother never told us too much because we were children and that could truly stress the child out as well.

its inside the symptom of depression, which is not only a symptom but also a mental illness in itself. having a hard time with self care is ALWAYS a warning sign.
its also clear that he was hyperfixating on true crime and violence/murder, and he had trouble socialising, which can also point to a specific spectrum of disorders. in my opinion, i think it does not look like he was doing these things (his mums underwear, and the toys) to get attention, but genuinely because he is suffering from something. He clearly tried to hide these things, and thought noone would find it. I dont think his mum meant to be neglectful, but not noticing the warning signs and getting him, a most probably very unstable person, the help that he needs, while she thought she was just being easy on some "teenage things" he did, it was neglect. He was neglected, but not purposefully.
This video mentions one of my biggest issues with mental health services in the UK. The “just an attention seeker” label is dangerous. If a young person is acting unwell, even if you THINK its just an act, it needs to be investigated. I was labelled as an attention seeker for having random crying fits, shaking, and zoning out. I am now an adult diagnosed with severe PTSD and depression, that was present since childhood. Listen to the kids!!!!!!
I think people like to forget that we as humans NEED attention. It's the second tier on Maslows Heirarchy of needs, infact right after basic needs like food and water. Anytime I hear people disregard something because that person is "an attention seeker" I just shake my head.... we do so many things for attention and that's not a bad thing! You're so right about just checking is out to be safe. I mean if someone's willing to put up an act to get attention, something tells me that's usually a cry for help y'know? @@betsyadams9670 its the same in Ireland - ad(h)d is the only thing that kids are really considered for, and if any (even in their teens) present clear anxiety or depression, they're told "everyone gets stressed, everyone gets sad" by doctors. Personality disorders and other psychological issues are sort of ignored unless it's chronic paranoia and delusions etc. My uncle was 55 when he was diagnosed as bipolar. His life could've been so much less chaotic and difficult if he'd gotten help sooner.
My sister was really bad growing up and everyone just chalked it up to ‘she’s just an attention seeker’ but when she got older it turns out she has severe ADHD. She told me that once she got her meds figured out, it was like she was a whole new person. People didn’t believe she wasn’t just ‘seeking attention’ or ‘trying to be annoying’ until she got better. The same thing is happening with my little brother but his parents won’t listen to what the doctors say and they say it’s because he’s just a hyper kid. He’s exhibiting the exact same behaviours as my sister was at that age and I just feel terrible that I can’t help my brother more, knowing what he’s going to go through.
@@SteveMHN thats true but theres no way to prevent a person with issues. A friend I know has a brother who has this mindset and was treated and he was the only one, they were all treated the same and had a good childhood. With some individuals its inevitable without the help. Sad but true.

Great video. As the person who actually now lives in this house and we bought it after the murder. Great research. Btw the petrol was taken from the petrol lawn mower in the shed. And my neighbours are wonderful and elderly. They were awoken by the arguing over trainers that were new and packed for a holiday they were going on. Screaming and shouting happened daily. Because the argument went quiet and it was 1am they tried to go back to bed. Hindsight’s a wonderful thing and that night still haunts all my neighbours that still live here. Having to go through personal belongings, you could tell Jackie was a lovely woman who loved her children very much. It’s a shame their story ended how it did at the hands of her own child.

I actually lived down the road of this little psycho and went to school with him (I was in 6th form at the time) When he set the house on fire we were freaking out, we live off of a main road so we hear sirens a lot but when they went down our road it was ridiculously loud; I remember being woken up by it and it was terrifying. Where it happened is pretty much in the country side so you can imagine We were even more freaked when we heard of the murder, we of course thought a man had done this and everyone was terrified until we heard it was Daniel that did it; there was a rumour going around school that there was a boy yelling at his tie in class saying ‘it was going to strangle him’ Definitely a scary time, thank you for covering this ❤️
As much as I love true crime and forensic science, as a teen, my mum always made me watch an hour of random cartoons or something happy afterwards. This was to ensure that the last thing on my mind would be like Spongebob instead of murder. She firmly believed in that the last thing in your mind should always be happy! Even to this day I'll binge crime and the watch something silly like BBT or Still Life just to clear the mind. She possibly also felt very lonely and used his oldest child to fill the gap of the "head of the house" cause she maybe didn't know how to deal with being a single mother. It is very sad honestly. If this is the case, I really don't know. Though I made the observations because I had a cousin who was similar to the kid with similar circumstances, except for the actually going through with murdering off course. I was of divorced parents myself too but my cousin's situation was so extreme and so ignored by many school councelors and social workers as if they were an "attention seeker" that they tried "unalive" themself in multiple occasions. They were able to get better only by their parents actually accepting that they needed professional help. Now they are a parent too and tries really hard to be better at paying attention to their child's needs and issues.

Even if he had been properly investigated I don’t think anyone would have thought that he was a danger to his mother probably apart from his mother. Despite brushing it off I think she did know that she was going to get hurt sooner or later. She probably didn’t think she was going to be murdered though. Fear and pretending that it’s nothing would be her way of dealing with it and making it seem more low key than what it was.
About consuming violent video games/ violent movies: there have been big studies that found that it is (most of the time) not the violent content that makes the people violent but it’s actually people with violent predispositions that enjoy consuming different violent media Aka people who are already violent will want to consume more violent content and it’s not the content that makes them aggressive in the first place (I hope this makes sense) Also great video as always :)

I like my fare share of gory horror movies myself along with some of my friends and we always get a little teed off when people say that violent media make people violent cause none of us ever murdered anyone. I’m glad you covered this case. People underestimate the how violent children can be towards other children and even adults, especially when it’s a boy, so it’s ignored and only gets worse as they get bigger and older. I hope that people start to realise how important it is for children to get the help they need if they are displaying concerning behaviour before it’s too late. As adults we should always try to be vigilant of children’s unusual behaviour, whether it’s aggressive or not, because it can be an indicator of a bigger problem that needs to be addressed.
I was fortunate enough to have a family who cared for my mental needs and got me help when I needed it most, it's upsetting that Daniel never got the same.

"Cry for attention" is a legit thing but it's seen the complete wrong way- it shouldn't never be dismissed as "fake" or to mean a child is fine. if a child is going to these extremes to cry for attention then obviously something needs attention. I think he was lying about the voices but yeah, you've got to ask "why would he lie about that".

Surely if a child is going to such extremes as a “cry for attention” that comes under mental health. All children act out for attention but there’s a clear difference here.
i was awake when my parents were arguing all the time and i would hear them yelling. i even heard them argue to the point when one of them said they dont love the other and they should divorce. i cried alot and it was definetly not the best day, but i never would even consider hurting my parents EVER.
I don’t think he should be released because as a 14 year old if you’re able to kill somebody and plan it as an adult you are capable of the same and much worse
yeah it makes me think of the killers of James bulger. they still committed crimes after being released, everyone in the bulger family was saying it, I think if youre a kid and your mind is still developing and then you're a murderer it just sets your mind up for it for life. if you grow up knowing you're a murderer, your brain will develop like that, if that makes sense
Angie's Tales from Wales you can grow up knowing you’re a murderer and still rehabilitate, IMO it’s more so the governments responsibility to prevent that sort of mindset from spiralling (even more) in teenage murderers. once they get caught they go to prison/juvie and this is MEANT to rehabilitate, but most facilities treat them like animals with no real resources to get better, and this would perpetuate that mindset as you said. our brains are able to alter the connections/pathways within them all throughout life, granted it’s easier when you’re young as our brains are still forming, but it’s still possible and means rehabilitation may be even easier in younger perpetrators!! it’s how we as a society and how our governing bodies handle these cases that set them up for life!! obviously there are limits, but we could be doing so much better!!

To a 14 year old boy, it probably seemed quite plausible a story. An adult mind I guess is able to see the issues with his poorly thought out plan. Good point though!

I don't believe Jackie neglected him. She was constantly trying to make sure he was happy, seeking his permission, if she didn't care about him she wouldn't put him at the forefront of all her decisions
She neglected all the signs that he wasn’t right in the head. He was violent with her son, he wrote about violence he only watched violence. Her boyfriend saw all the signs. A counsellor saw the signs except for one idiot. She did not do enough for her son. She did not recognize the monster in her own home and it cost her her life.

She probably was aware of his behavior but didn’t know what they meant. We need to stop assuming that everyone is a mental health expert or is educated on how to deal with these kind of things. Also, saying her negligence cost her her life is victim blaming.
She neglected him in many ways as evidenced by your points. She made sure he was happy all the time, at the fire front if decisions to avoid his violence, she allowed and made excuses for the violence as opposed to discipline and seeking help and support for him.

There wasn't really any reason to murder his mom, it's not like he was abused, talking of emotional neglect even if it happened its not something to murder someone for almost every kid gets somehow emotionally neglected at some point & also on Dr. Phil he said that he killed her because she wasn't taking proper care so ig it's clear that he wasn't abused of something. This. Exactly what I've just written in response to a woman who doesn't want children out of fear they will murder her. It DOES happen sometimes where someone is mentally very sick and will do this regardless of treatment by parents, but generally the nurture part is, usually, more to blame in these cases. Because most people don't have psychiatric problems and still... murder is still very rare and matricide is even rarer. Its worrying that people whovwatch true crime decide not to have children, they obviously think this stuff happens a lot.

I don't like the victim blaming of the experts who said "Mom didn't pay enough attention to him." I had a sickly younger brother who took all my parents attention when he was young. I didn't murder anyone. I fought constantly with my mother as a teenager and I didn't murder her. I still fight constantly with mom and I'm 42 and again I haven't murdered her. Like, my mom and dad had jobs and I was not the center of their world and I didn't feel like I needed to be. I have friends with divorced parents who divorced at similar ages to this kid and they aren't murderers. This cry for attention bullshit ignores the probability that something else was wrong in this child probably at a biological level. People always want to blame the mom for their child's behavior, but he has two parents and his own personality. Where was dad in all of this? If she did anything wrong, it was to not advocate more for her child's mental health. I think it comes down to are some people born to kill? I wonder if Daniel might be one of those people who were.
Good for you😐, but every person isn't like you or your friends. Everyone responds to trauma differently and calling out the truth isn't victim blaming. She probably was inattentive, and it's a known fact that when kids feel ignored, unwanted or unloved by parents they act out. Normally not to this extent which leads me to believe he wasn't mentally well but that still doesn't mean her treatment of her son wasn't a contributing factor in his behavior.
@@prettypoppin_552 I think they were saying putting a lot of the blame on the mom’s *entirely hypothetical* neglect every single time a child murders her is used as a way to dismiss that the child is mentally ill. Like it may be a contributing factor but it’s usually blamed as WHY the child is mentally ill and WHY she was murdered. It’s put as the entire motive, not one part of a list of things. Of course some kids act out when they feel ignored and neglected. Nobody said they don’t. But to act out to the degree Daniel did should have been a sign there was something wrong with his brain chemistry. That’s what I think they were saying. Not that being neglected wasn’t a contributing factor, but that even if he was, the way he reacted to it should have been a sign he needed help.

No one is, but this was clearly a troubled child. who was acting in ways that are not the norm for the circumstances that he was presented with. Divorced parents, having to change schools, mom dating someone new, having a kid brother who took mom's attention some of the time. These are all incredibly normal things to happen and 99.9% of the time, children don't murder their parents over it. And we don't know the mom's side of the story because Daniel killed his mom. The step dad's side didn't seem to present a mom that was neglectful, but a mom that was trying to give their child space. It seems that Daniel blamed her for his life not remaining the same. He probably should have gotten more mental health treatment to teach him coping mechanisms to deal with change, but again, no one expects a child to murder their mother.
The thing about the 'they're just doing it for the attention' explanation... doesn't erase the problem. Cause then it just raises the question: What attention are they not getting, why are they not getting it, and why do they feel they have to resort to the extreme of faking ailments to receive it? I'm glad you acknowledged that in your video.

Yo my cousin has literally jumped out of a moving car because she didnt want to talk to someone. She's a person who constantly needs attention even though theres nothing wrong with her. Oh and she doesn't have any mental illnesses. Shes been tested and whatnot.

Every time a true crime story starts out with, “they were the model family. Things were wonderful and then the couple divorced.”, I laugh. If the family was actually functional before the divorce, the divorce wouldn’t have happened. No one will ever know what went on in that family, but the fact that the father wasn’t around during his ex-wife’s murder trial and investigation - not even to comfort his own sons - speaks volumes. The trouble with this boy started long before the divorce.

Stuff like this makes me really appreciate my parents more. May have arguments or disagreements from my parents but never once have I considered ever actually doing any harm to them, and having heard how much that his family endured to him makes me sick to the bone.

don’t armchair diagnose people, aspd and npd are very real and existing mental health conditions that don’t drive people to becoming murderers. this stigma does nothing but harm people in this community. if trained psychologists and doctors found a diagnosis similar to psychopathy/narcissism, it would be mentioned in this video.

Crying for attention is a sign of multiple disorders. Major depressive disorder, Adhd, autism, bpd, alot of disorders this occurs when a child isn't getting proper attention or feels alone. When I was younger I was diagnosed with autism (adhd is a given with the disorder as well) I would often have break downs over feeling neglected and the only way to solve them was to give me attention because my emotional state needed support.
When you said the 14 year old scared off the masked man I knew it was him 100% I ain't gonna run from a kid no matter what they throw and most 14 year olds are taller than me hahahah
i was thinking, maybe he pretended to have a mental illness and lied about hearing voices, because he thought he would get a lesser sentence if he ever got caught. It is common amongst those who love true crime and later kill, to adopt other killers strategies

It is very hard to argue the insanity plea without having a very serious mental illness. I guess we as people sometimes cannot accept that some people grow up to be cruel if they do not socialize properly etc. It's not always the mental illness
I would like to see tapes of Daniel's interrogation. Did he shift his behavior when he knew he was being watched versus when they left the room? Was there an effort to "act crazy"? It would be really interesting to know if the "attention seeking" behaviors carried over to the interrogation.

I honestly suggest possibly locking your doors at times where you’re alone and vulnerable, make sure you two have a lot of space, and move out as soon as you can. Make sure your contact with him is only when it’s necessary.
This may be threatening to your lives... Try to inform other people about it (other relatives, his school, etc...) and always stay on your guards... Just in case something might happen...

Kitty Genovese was not murdered in front of nearly as many witnesses as the NYT reported (38!), and multiple witnesses did call the police upon hearing a struggle. From the wikipedia page about the case, "In 2007, an article in the American Psychologist found "no evidence for the presence of 38 witnesses, or that witnesses observed the murder, or that witnesses remained inactive". In 2016, The New York Times called its own reporting "flawed", stating that the original story "grossly exaggerated the number of witnesses and what they had perceived". I appreciate your point though, and this isn't to say it never happens! Just thought i should share since that particular case is responsible for a lot of misconceptions :)

In most cases I think it comes down to “what if it’s nothing” “what if it’s nothing and the cops get mad” “what if the neighbors get mad at me” does that make sense? There’s so many cases where neighbors or ppl who hear certain things imperative to a case say the same thing “I thought it wasn’t serious, and if I called and they knew they’d get mad, and I’d feel bad” or “it would have been awkward” there’s even videos of people recording themselves doing normal things and hearing violent situations next door but not doing anything because they “feel awkward” does that make sense? But I do get the bystander effect and it could be very well that some ppl just assume another neighbor hears and calls!

Even if he was faking hearing voices, a normal healthy teen doesn't seek attention that badly. Something was clearly wrong with him and the system had multiple chances to do something about it and they didn't. The failure to notice that something was wrong with this kid ended up failing his mother too.

This shows that domestic violence is NOT only between partners and NOT only physical. It can happen to parents and it can include verbal, emotional, psychological abuse as well. This is a tragic case

I wish more people knew this. Everyone always assumes it's a man abusing his girlfriend/wife but it can be parents being abused by their children, children being abused by their siblings, etc. It can happen to anyone regardless of age or gender.

I’ve seen that a lot of domestic violence resources provided by authorities are usually oriented towards people in relationships, even though it also occurs between siblings, parents and children, and with anyone else living in the house. They definitely need to expand more for these kinds of situations
Maybe it’s because he was so young, but I was surprised that he escalated so quickly. Usually domestic abusers start out normal, then escalate through stages before getting to the final stage of homicide. Like you wouldn’t expect one to jump straight from verbal abuse to murder, you’d expect them to go through a phase of beating people up in between. I guess he did beat up his brother, but with his mom it sounds like he just skipped that stage.

My mouth flew open and I cried for her. He got mad because she’s moving up north and didn’t tell him! I told her I’d pray for her because she hasn’t learned a lesson. You don’t help people that keep putting themselves in the same situation. She lets her grandson do ALL KINDS of bad things and make excuses without punishing him. I completely banned her grandson from my house. He hits EVERYBODY he play with. He hit my child and my husband went off on her. She said my husband hurt her feelings like she’s not being a good parent! I’m looking at her like “ ok what’s more important your feelings being hurt or your grandson ending up hurt or killed for hitting people!” We just speak and keep it casual now. That kind of parenting is dangerous for anyone that child comes in contact with. I don’t want my child to end up hurting him so that friendship is not worth fighting for.

Bathroom issues are a huge sign of emotional and behavioral problems even with animals so I have no idea how that wasn’t taken extremely seriously here and how she didn’t immediately take him to a doctor after that
All cases that mention that professionals didn’t deem the person mentally ill or anything the like, but they were just looking for attention.. Going to the toilet in his closet, abusing his younger brother, fighting with people around him to this extent is not something that your day to day person does. Even if he did this for attention, there should be something added to the dsm5 because attention seeking like this is not very common, yet I hear it all the time in these true crime cases.
I feel like it's psychologists/psychiatrists saying that a Non-specified diagnosis is not enough to declare the person mentally incompetent to stand trial. With some of the stuff in here he might've been borderline personality disorder or he might have been deliberately 'malingering' i.e. pretending to have a mental illness because he has researched that it is a means not to be held criminally responsible for the murder he was planning. Generally, for a diagnosis the categorical behaviours have to be seen in multiple environments (minimum two preferably 3 - like school, home, other). The defecation/urination could be viewed as destroying property deliberately to prevent items from being given to his sibling- most parents will give toys one child has grown out of to a younger sibling. The underwear sounds pretty weird from the outside, but it doesn't necessitate a desire for his mother specifically. I've known some kids that did similar shit when in their preteens/teens because they "liked the feel of the material better than a gym sock" and couldn't bring themselves to go out and buy their own wank gear yet. I had the mis/fortune that my mom was the nightshift emergency room nurse alot of my art friends wound up seeing at least once and felt like it meant I was the confessional for their sex-ed experiments/ questions.

@@EMEM663 While there are conditions that can be scientifically tested and diagnosed by medical diagnoses, EEGs, MRIs and noticeable chemical imbalances alot of diagnosis categories require the assessment in multiple environments to prevent misdiagnosing say abuse-responsive actions for anxiety, clinical depression etc.. as for my mom ehhh I wound up making friends with many of them it just was very very difficult keeping my mom from knowing it since they mostly had the survival instincts of a sunfish.

I graduated from college with a psych concentration and there actually is something that fits with some of these symptoms. It's called Conduct Disorder and some of the symptoms from the DSM-5 include:
-Bullying, intimidating and threatening others often
-Starts fights often
-Physically cruel to people or animals
-Setting fires, wanting to cause serious damage
-Has destroyed other people’s possessions (other methods than setting fire) - which sounds similar to the possible motivation of him defecating/urinating on the toys his mother bought him -
-Has stolen things without confronting the victim (his mother's underwear)
Rejection by more prosocial (wanting to help people with no expectation of rewards for doing so) peers - he doesn't have really any friends -
-Has used a weapon that can result in severe harm to other people. (These items may include bat, knives, broken bottles or bricks)

@@idek7438 yep. Whenever my mom moved us I never questioned her. She always protected us so if we were moving I knew because we had to. I’m not going to ask my child if it’s ok to move. I’ll let them know we’re moving and depending on their maturity I’ll tell them why. My mother never told us too much because we were children and that could truly stress the child out as well.

He might've been faking hearing voices for attention, but failure in self care and questionable hygiene practices are outside signs of a psychotic episode.
its inside the symptom of depression, which is not only a symptom but also a mental illness in itself. having a hard time with self care is ALWAYS a warning sign.
its also clear that he was hyperfixating on true crime and violence/murder, and he had trouble socialising, which can also point to a specific spectrum of disorders. in my opinion, i think it does not look like he was doing these things (his mums underwear, and the toys) to get attention, but genuinely because he is suffering from something. He clearly tried to hide these things, and thought noone would find it. I dont think his mum meant to be neglectful, but not noticing the warning signs and getting him, a most probably very unstable person, the help that he needs, while she thought she was just being easy on some "teenage things" he did, it was neglect. He was neglected, but not purposefully.

This video mentions one of my biggest issues with mental health services in the UK. The “just an attention seeker” label is dangerous. If a young person is acting unwell, even if you THINK its just an act, it needs to be investigated. I was labelled as an attention seeker for having random crying fits, shaking, and zoning out. I am now an adult diagnosed with severe PTSD and depression, that was present since childhood. Listen to the kids!!!!!!
I think people like to forget that we as humans NEED attention. It's the second tier on Maslows Heirarchy of needs, infact right after basic needs like food and water. Anytime I hear people disregard something because that person is "an attention seeker" I just shake my head.... we do so many things for attention and that's not a bad thing!

@@betsyadams9670 its the same in Ireland - ad(h)d is the only thing that kids are really considered for, and if any (even in their teens) present clear anxiety or depression, they're told "everyone gets stressed, everyone gets sad" by doctors. Personality disorders and other psychological issues are sort of ignored unless it's chronic paranoia and delusions etc. My uncle was 55 when he was diagnosed as bipolar. His life could've been so much less chaotic and difficult if he'd gotten help sooner.
My sister was really bad growing up and everyone just chalked it up to ‘she’s just an attention seeker’ but when she got older it turns out she has severe ADHD. She told me that once she got her meds figured out, it was like she was a whole new person. People didn’t believe she wasn’t just ‘seeking attention’ or ‘trying to be annoying’ until she got better.
The same thing is happening with my little brother but his parents won’t listen to what the doctors say and they say it’s because he’s just a hyper kid. He’s exhibiting the exact same behaviours as my sister was at that age and I just feel terrible that I can’t help my brother more, knowing what he’s going to go through.
This is one of those terrible cases that makes me want to snort birth control, some kids are just cruel

His mum was literally working full time and giving him her whole paycheck and he was like 30+ years old. And my neighbours are wonderful and elderly. They were awoken by the arguing over trainers that were new and packed for a holiday they were going on. Screaming and shouting happened daily. Because the argument went quiet and it was 1am they tried to go back to bed. Hindsight’s a wonderful thing and that night still haunts all my neighbours that still live here. Having to go through personal belongings, you could tell Jackie was a lovely woman who loved her children very much. It’s a shame their story ended how it did at the hands of her own child.
If the school counsellor knew about his thoughts, they should have referred him to a psychologist. Holy moly

Hey girl! I actually lived down the road of this little psycho and went to school with him (I was in 6th form at the time)
When he set the house on fire we were freaking out, we live off of a main road so we hear sirens a lot but when they went down our road it was ridiculously loud; I remember being woken up by it and it was terrifying. Where it happened is pretty much in the country side so you can imagine
We were even more freaked when we heard of the murder, we of course thought a man had done this and everyone was terrified until we heard it was Daniel that did it; there was a rumour going around school that there was a boy yelling at his tie in class saying ‘it was going to strangle him’

As much as I love true crime and forensic science, as a teen, my mum always made me watch an hour of random cartoons or something happy afterwards. This was to ensure that the last thing on my mind would be like Spongebob instead of murder. She firmly believed in that the last thing in your mind should always be happy! Even to this day I'll binge crime and the watch something silly like BBT or Still Life just to clear the mind.

She possibly also felt very lonely and used his oldest child to fill the gap of the "head of the house" cause she maybe didn't know how to deal with being a single mother. It is very sad honestly. If this is the case, I really don't know. Though I made the observations because I had a cousin who was similar to the kid with similar circumstances, except for the actually going through with murdering off course. I was of divorced parents myself too but my cousin's situation was so extreme and so ignored by many school councelors and social workers as if they were an "attention seeker" that they tried "unalive" themself in multiple occasions. They were able to get better only by their parents actually accepting that they needed professional help. Now they are a parent too and tries really hard to be better at paying attention to their child's needs and issues.

Even if he had been properly investigated I don’t think anyone would have thought that he was a danger to his mother probably apart from his mother. Despite brushing it off I think she did know that she was going to get hurt sooner or later. She probably didn’t think she was going to be murdered though. Fear and pretending that it’s nothing would be her way of dealing with it and making it seem more low key than what it was.
About consuming violent video games/ violent movies: there have been big studies that found that it is (most of the time) not the violent content that makes the people violent but it’s actually people with violent predispositions that enjoy consuming different violent media
Aka people who are already violent will want to consume more violent content and it’s not the content that makes them aggressive in the first place (I hope this makes sense)

I’m glad you covered this case. People underestimate the how violent children can be towards other children and even adults, especially when it’s a boy, so it’s ignored and only gets worse as they get bigger and older. I hope that people start to realise how important it is for children to get the help they need if they are displaying concerning behaviour before it’s too late. As adults we should always try to be vigilant of children’s unusual behaviour, whether it’s aggressive or not, because it can be an indicator of a bigger problem that needs to be addressed.
If that’s how he treated his mother, imagine in the future if he had had a family and kids how he would’ve treated women or children

"Cry for attention" is a legit thing but it's seen the complete wrong way- it shouldn't never be dismissed as "fake" or to mean a child is fine. if a child is going to these extremes to cry for attention then obviously something needs attention. I think he was lying about the voices but yeah, you've got to ask "why would he lie about that".

Surely if a child is going to such extremes as a “cry for attention” that comes under mental health. All children act out for attention but there’s a clear difference here.
i was awake when my parents were arguing all the time and i would hear them yelling. i even heard them argue to the point when one of them said they dont love the other and they should divorce. i cried alot and it was definetly not the best day, but i never would even consider hurting my parents EVER.

yeah it makes me think of the killers of James bulger. they still committed crimes after being released, everyone in the bulger family was saying it, I think if youre a kid and your mind is still developing and then you're a murderer it just sets your mind up for it for life. if you grow up knowing you're a murderer, your brain will develop like that, if that makes sense
Angie's Tales from Wales you can grow up knowing you’re a murderer and still rehabilitate, IMO it’s more so the governments responsibility to prevent that sort of mindset from spiralling (even more) in teenage murderers. once they get caught they go to prison/juvie and this is MEANT to rehabilitate, but most facilities treat them like animals with no real resources to get better, and this would perpetuate that mindset as you said. our brains are able to alter the connections/pathways within them all throughout life, granted it’s easier when you’re young as our brains are still forming, but it’s still possible and means rehabilitation may be even easier in younger perpetrators!! it’s how we as a society and how our governing bodies handle these cases that set them up for life!! obviously there are limits, but we could be doing so much better!!

To a 14 year old boy, it probably seemed quite plausible a story. An adult mind I guess is able to see the issues with his poorly thought out plan. Good point though!

I don't believe Jackie neglected him. She was constantly trying to make sure he was happy, seeking his permission, if she didn't care about him she wouldn't put him at the forefront of all her decisions
She neglected all the signs that he wasn’t right in the head. He was violent with her son, he wrote about violence he only watched violence. Her boyfriend saw all the signs. A counsellor saw the signs except for one idiot. She did not do enough for her son. She did not recognize the monster in her own home and it cost her her life.
@@lizadoesray Jackie isn’t here to say what she did and didn’t recognize. I think she catered so much to his whims because she knew something was off and wanted to help in some way. She probably was aware of his behavior but didn’t know what they meant. We need to stop assuming that everyone is a mental health expert or is educated on how to deal with these kind of things.

She neglected him in many ways as evidenced by your points. She made sure he was happy all the time, at the fire front if decisions to avoid his violence, she allowed and made excuses for the violence as opposed to discipline and seeking help and support for him.

This. Exactly what I've just written in response to a woman who doesn't want children out of fear they will murder her. It DOES happen sometimes where someone is mentally very sick and will do this regardless of treatment by parents, but generally the nurture part is, usually, more to blame in these cases. Because most people don't have psychiatric problems and still... murder is still very rare and matricide is even rarer.
Its worrying that people whovwatch true crime decide not to have children, they obviously think this stuff happens a lot.

I don't like the victim blaming of the experts who said "Mom didn't pay enough attention to him." I had a sickly younger brother who took all my parents attention when he was young. I didn't murder anyone. I fought constantly with my mother as a teenager and I didn't murder her. I still fight constantly with mom and I'm 42 and again I haven't murdered her. Like, my mom and dad had jobs and I was not the center of their world and I didn't feel like I needed to be. I have friends with divorced parents who divorced at similar ages to this kid and they aren't murderers. This cry for attention bullshit ignores the probability that something else was wrong in this child probably at a biological level. People always want to blame the mom for their child's behavior, but he has two parents and his own personality. Where was dad in all of this? If she did anything wrong, it was to not advocate more for her child's mental health.
I think it comes down to are some people born to kill? I wonder if Daniel might be one of those people who were.
Good for you😐, but every person isn't like you or your friends. Everyone responds to trauma differently and calling out the truth isn't victim blaming. She probably was inattentive, and it's a known fact that when kids feel ignored, unwanted or unloved by parents they act out. Normally not to this extent which leads me to believe he wasn't mentally well but that still doesn't mean her treatment of her son wasn't a contributing factor in his behavior.
@@prettypoppin_552 I think they were saying putting a lot of the blame on the mom’s *entirely hypothetical* neglect every single time a child murders her is used as a way to dismiss that the child is mentally ill. Like it may be a contributing factor but it’s usually blamed as WHY the child is mentally ill and WHY she was murdered. It’s put as the entire motive, not one part of a list of things. Of course some kids act out when they feel ignored and neglected. Nobody said they don’t. But to act out to the degree Daniel did should have been a sign there was something wrong with his brain chemistry.
That’s what I think they were saying. Not that being neglected wasn’t a contributing factor, but that even if he was, the way he reacted to it should have been a sign he needed help.

No one is, but this was clearly a troubled child. who was acting in ways that are not the norm for the circumstances that he was presented with. Divorced parents, having to change schools, mom dating someone new, having a kid brother who took mom's attention some of the time. These are all incredibly normal things to happen and 99.9% of the time, children don't murder their parents over it.
And we don't know the mom's side of the story because Daniel killed his mom. The step dad's side didn't seem to present a mom that was neglectful, but a mom that was trying to give their child space. It seems that Daniel blamed her for his life not remaining the same. He probably should have gotten more mental health treatment to teach him coping mechanisms to deal with change, but again, no one expects a child to murder their mother.

Every time a true crime story starts out with, “they were the model family. Things were wonderful and then the couple divorced.”, I laugh. If the family was actually functional before the divorce, the divorce wouldn’t have happened. No one will ever know what went on in that family, but the fact that the father wasn’t around during his ex-wife’s murder trial and investigation - not even to comfort his own sons - speaks volumes. The trouble with this boy started long before the divorce.

don’t armchair diagnose people, aspd and npd are very real and existing mental health conditions that don’t drive people to becoming murderers. this stigma does nothing but harm people in this community. if trained psychologists and doctors found a diagnosis similar to psychopathy/narcissism, it would be mentioned in this video.

I think crying for attention is and of itself a sign of mental health concerns. Like a plea for help without understanding what’s wrong or how to go about asking, rather than some prima donna drama, if that makes sense?

Crying for attention is a sign of multiple disorders. Major depressive disorder, Adhd, autism, bpd, alot of disorders this occurs when a child isn't getting proper attention or feels alone. When I was younger I was diagnosed with autism (adhd is a given with the disorder as well) I would often have break downs over feeling neglected and the only way to solve them was to give me attention because my emotional state needed support.

i was thinking, maybe he pretended to have a mental illness and lied about hearing voices, because he thought he would get a lesser sentence if he ever got caught. It is common amongst those who love true crime and later kill, to adopt other killers strategies

@@MariannaSun1 its very possible that age is a factor as well. Psychologists hesitate to diagnose a child that young with a personality disorder because their brains are not yet fully developed.

It is very hard to argue the insanity plea without having a very serious mental illness. I guess we as people sometimes cannot accept that some people grow up to be cruel if they do not socialize properly etc. It's not always the mental illness
I would like to see tapes of Daniel's interrogation. Did he shift his behavior when he knew he was being watched versus when they left the room? Was there an effort to
"act crazy"? It would be really interesting to know if the "attention seeking" behaviors carried over to the interrogation.

I honestly suggest possibly locking your doors at times where you’re alone and vulnerable, make sure you two have a lot of space, and move out as soon as you can. Make sure your contact with him is only when it’s necessary.
This may be threatening to your lives... Try to inform other people about it (other relatives, his school, etc...) and always stay on your guards... Just in case something might happen...
