- This short video introduces the Gift Prints produced by Tokyo woodblock printmaker Dave Bull, and his Mokuhankan workshop.
It's actually a remake of a similar video produced a number of years ago, updated for the current generation of fans ... [Update: the price mentioned in this years-old video is no longer applicable ... sorry!]
The Gift Prints are available from this page:
mokuhankan.com...
Many similar prints can also be obtained through Dave's Mokuhankan publishing venture - look in the catalogue there for the items described as 'HangaClub':
mokuhankan.com/...
And, for reference, the company making the software that "Doesn't Suck" is BareBones; their website is here:

This is the classiest commercial I've ever seen.
Two years later - still true.
U should try porters channel than
It worked on me. Can't wait to start receiving prints!
Try long long man
Business!💩🤑🤮
This was the first video by Dave Bull I ever saw. I’ve since purchased a few prints from him, and every time I look at them I think ‘it’s not garbage’ and take comfort knowing they will indeed be passed on and on and on.
The ASMR is strong in this one.
hahahahahaha
Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response or in short a tingle like feeling one gets from certain things being said or done to them
@@homieyosh1342 don't know why but hearing someone else other than myself explain this is soooooo relieving
@@mynameisntdave6012 I saw that certain was spelt wrong and changed it. Thanks for replying, also I do too so I know where your coming from
It's my favorite video ever
This guy is fantastic. Fantastic personality, charisma, body language. He should have his own tv channel.
Claiming your works aren't garbage must be the understatement of the year. A truly exquisite print!
nice pfp
I’ve used this “not garbage” pitch ever since I’ve seen this video years ago. It got me not only 2 jobs, but 2 high paying jobs that I don’t think just handing a resume in would’ve. I can’t stress enough how clever & raw this pitch really is.
Coming in Summer 2022 "it's not garbage-remake-champion edition" staring Davids 35 year old fridge
38 year old fridge now! Lol. Hope you are having a great week, friend.
200 years... it`s difficult to grasp the idea for people today, you walk the streets of some cities and there is this building from 1780, the other from 1653, and so on. soon the idea of time takes another meaning, it`s mind boggling at first (at least for me a "new" world man). then i met my wife and she shows me her house, the family house in which they had lived for generations more than 200 years! now i understand deeply the concept and i strive to put it in my work (blacksmithing) but it`s getting harder and harder for me to explain as there`s so much money into the "garbage" industry.
it`s so refreshing, so inspirational (sorry the cheesy moment) to see your work as place where all these concepts come alive. thank you very much for sharing, work and thoughts. regards. pete
Thanks for the comment … I have to be careful not to leave the impression that I’m trying to say “New = Bad; Old = Good”. I’m pretty happy living in the ‘present’ here, and am enjoying very much some of the objects that I use in my daily life. But it’s also a strong pleasure to be involved in work that suits so closely the ‘new ethics’ of low-energy profile, sustainability, re-cyclability, etc. etc. that are now so much needed in our society ...
I have just received this print from Mr Bull and his talented workers and can say it’s even more stunning up close. It took 5 days to arrive from Japan to England. He’s right, it’s not garbage, it’s beautiful.
so inspirational, he reminds me of Bob Ross
The ImpStrangler true
I was actually gonna post something like ''The Bob Ross of Japanese printing''.
i am getting tired of this comment in all of his videos for the past years. Aside from the voice( and the cool beard) he is nothing like bob ross.
@@cionm7077 his kind hearted nature and passion for his art (much like Bob Ross)
Sexy cave Troll he cares less for the art and more for the method, the crafting of it. He himself says so.
This seriously convinced me to purchase a print, and I'm not easily swayed by things like this. You're an incredible marketer, whether you know it or not.
It’s funny. While he 100% is trying to sell his prints, it does not come across as a sleazy or even just as a disinterested sales pitch. I think it’s because his team made the “product,” he loves the product, and he truly is proud to present it to the world.
I don't know why RUclips recommended one of your videos to me, but since then I have been binge watching your channel. You may be an artist, a carver, and a business owner, but what you do best is tell stories. You are a fabulous story teller and I get mesmerized by them. Thank you!
I really hope that Studio Ghibli take you up on the offer at some point soon. They'd look beautiful.
They would make a tidy little packet out of that.
Ghibli is a looser
Brilliant. Understated, honest and thoughtful.
I could listen to this guy talk for hours.
I reckon David doesnt know he is an unintentional ASMR legend.
another year has passed, time for a 2021 fridge update?
He just said on stream that it still running
this is beautiful
“You never actually own a Patek Phillipe. You merely look after it for the next generation.”
I could listen to you for hours... such a pleasing and calm voice... kinda like Bob Ross :)
If I ever visit Japan (which i'm sure I will) i'm seeking this man and shop out for some Japanese tea and a few prints to begin my collection. Amazed by the skill and dedication that goes in to these. Well done David.

You are the Bob Ross of wood carving/print making/asmr! You are amazing!
I bought one of your prints recently as a gift (the Hiroshige Sleeping Owl) and it was absolutely gorgeous (and hugely appreciated by the recipient!)
Hey David! I love your work. Thanks for taking the time to share your talent with the rest of us.
I always love your videos. I don't earn a whole lot, but I do hope to be able to save up and buy a few of your prints. Keep up the phenomenal work!
How is the fridge doing? :-)
I bought my brother this gift print for Christmas - I was amazed at the quality of the work and needless to say, viewing it on a mobile phone doesn't don't justice. Great work Dave and all the guys, keep it going!!
This is a fascinating story
I'm not even an artist. I admire great work, but I'm simply here for the asmr aspect. He's so soothing to listen to and, in many ways, reminds me of Bob Ross. Great guy and keep the videos coming!
Its time for another remake of this Dave!!! Just got my gift print in the mail today :).
What an amazing coincidence! I saw your video on Ito Susumu some months ago and only recently remembered your channel. The storytelling was superb and the video was calm and relaxing, I had to see more. I found your channel yesterday and decided to watch from the beginning and of course the first of those videos was "It's Not Garbage!"
THIS IS THE MOST KINDEST AND TRUE VIDEO
'The ASMR is strong with this one.'
This...change the entire way I used to look at carvings/ukyo-e
And it also taught something extremely valuable.
Thank you very much, Mr. David.
Still return to this amazing video every now and then
May 2022. Back to rewatch again
im worked in screen printing and now with digital commercial printer, i am fascinated by the history of printing, thank you David for sharing this amazing craft!
The art is lovely, and the voice is calm and soothing. All told, this is a top-notch case for those prints being Not Garbage.
I lost my tingles a long time ago for ASMR. It is a raaaare asmrtist who triggers me. This guy is it.
this 5 minute video relaxes and focuses me more than anything else
I want to give this man a hug
You really know how to market your products. They look beautiful and are works of art.
What a beautiful print! And very true words! Thank you very much for sharing this!
It's not garbage, and never will be!
That's a damn good slogan.
Dave Bull, yeeeeessss. I stumbled over this gem a year or so ago just looking up woodblock prints
I don´t think the world will last for another 200 years
Kon'nichiwa David, your work is masterful and your patience in astounding! One only thinks they understand until they have visited Japan and experience the culture of art, tradition, religion and respect. BTW, my son is stationed at Camp Zama in Zama, Kanagawa which we were fortunate enough to visit just before the Covid-19 shutdown. What a wonderful place to live! I'm jealous...
Holy Crap David! You are freaking HONEY in this...I want one of each!
wow! just checked the site and im sold. beautiful and stunning work :)
It’s Bob Ross with a bowl cut... and I couldn’t be more grateful for this dude and his ASMR vibes Domo arigato Mr. Davato
Love love love your videos. So inspiring and also somehow therapeutic. Thank you for helping to keep this tradition alive and simultaneously bring it to life to so many viewers. Watching your videos has taught me so much, thank you!
Simple, direct, and honest. I love the slogan! Keep up the amazing work! I enjoy your videos very much.
thank you so much for sharing .. everything you share :) respect!
p.s. I viewed few dozen of your vids and I'm still waiting one where you don't stop/cut/edit yourself talking as your experience of subject drives you no matter how randomly it goes because I enjoy mostly at your wisdom and perspective on everything you do,think and feel. I hope I didn't go to far, if I did I apologize and in the future will respect you and your work in silence.
Again thank you Master.
Still my favorite video. I wish it was an hour long, but still by favorite 🙂
Beautiful and his voice was made for ASMR!
Beauty full video. Thanks for sharing
Beautiful statement 💯💯 classic David bull
If you made a video or two now about gift prints, I think you'd have a lot of orders by Christmas time. You do a lot of work explaining the process and details of the work (which I love) but at the same time, there is nothing wrong with throwing in a little promotion for yourself.
What a brilliant sales pitch!
Never have I watched a better coommercial.
I know it may sound a bit off but essentially sir what you are able to pull off is an genuine ASMR experience. Your voice is deeply suiting and considering my self as an ASMR connoisseur I can tell that no matter how hard and far (or should I say low) other people may attempt to simulate a ASMR experience nothing and I mean nothing can come even remotely close to the real thing. What I think can be traced in your voice and words is those deep emotions of love and appreciation towards your work, your craft and the fruits of your effort. That deep care of the things you made, the way you look and handle them. That is love in one of it's purest form and it can be traced in your voice. Thank you sincerely for the content you produce.
you're a legend, Dave
This is such a beautiful channel.
1- Each print is placed on a backboard for stability
2- It's then packed in an elegant little folder
3- It goes into an envelope which is wrapped with a nice decorative paper
4- It's then prepared for mailing with some nice commemorative Japanese stamps as a little added bonus touch
Cost $30 dollars plus $2.50 postage to anywhere in the world -- A Bargain!
So lovely.
Amazing video as always David, very calming and with a great message.
Beautiful prints!
Thank you for your videos.
Greetings from Colombia.
My favourite is the miniature prints with little foxes bathing and going for a stroll on the snow. Maybe i will get that one day.
David Bull deserves a Super Bowl commercial
My go to sleep ASMR
So does this mean that we are going to get a remake of a remake now that we are seven or so years on.
A fascinating perspective. Visual art occupies a unique role in that it is one of the very few things that can be "used", or more accurately, enjoyed, without moving, or being handled, touched, or otherwise exposed to accelerated wear and tear.
By skilled hands, visual art is also very repairable, since it regains one hundred percent of its "utility" by being restored to its original appearance, allowing it to continue in use for another lengthy stretch. At some point you do run into Theseus' Paradox, but that's a separate discussion. By contrast, any object which fulfills a mechanical function has its repair costs increase exponentially over time, until it reaches the point where it becomes unarguably more efficient to recycle it and obtain a new one.
The demise of mechanically functional objects is further exacerbated by the function which brings about their existence. Even an expensive repair, might be justified weighed against the uniqueness of a visual art piece. However, at some point any functional object has its increasing cost of upkeep outweigh its value. It might well be worth it to spend one hundred thousand dollars to restore the Mona Lisa so it can be displayed for another 500 years, but a commuter car can not demand repairs at more than a small fraction of its purchase price before the cost of its upkeep outweighs the value of its function, and a competitive solution takes over (new car, bus, walking, bicycling, etc.). There is no direct alternative to a unique piece of art, and so there is no competition for the "service" it provides by being displayed.
I think I may have only succeeded in re-iterating some of the points in the video with less elegance, but the more I thought about it, the more interesting the concept of object life-cycles became. Thanks for a great video.
cant wait to buy lots of prints.
Every Christmas I've tried to come up with a unique present for my SO. This would be perfect!
I thank many of our items can be maintained forever, and are their own art. Surely not all appliance are, but many are worth repairing and maintaining forever. Please don't imply its acceptable to throw in the garbage, what breaks.
Your prints can rip, and be masterfully reglued. Still inspiring all it did.
Preserve your posessions, as you do yourself.
Otherwise they are not worthy of your money.
You buy not just art, appliance, beauty, but an obligation.
I'm sold
How's Davids fridge doing as of October 2019?
Still plugging away ... (although it uses so much electricity, it really should be replaced with something newer ...)

Would you consider doing a Q&A? Love your channel.
Putting it another way. It will last, be cared for and remembered probably longer than the grave of anyone reading this comment.
Wow you've sold me.
It's funny, I heard before that David was born in the UK, but I assumed that was just where his mother found herself at the time of his birth, I assumed his parents were Canadian, but twice in this video, and its the only time I've heard it from him, twice do I notice an English twang to his accent. For example, when he says 'the computer I'll use...'.
For the record, I was born in Yorkshire in 1951, but spent the next six years in London (where I was sent to a 'prep' school). We emigrated to Canada in 1957 (by steamship ...), and it would seem to me that my 'proper' British accent must have soon been eradicated by my subsequent 12 years spent in Canadian classrooms ...
@@seseragistudio Well I find your accent and voice quite mesmerising actually 😂, so no ill was done from it in my view. Is there any particular reason your family made the move to Canada? Also, I feel quite honoured that you responded to my comment, considering its just shy of 5 years late, I discovered this channel and your company at around Christmas time and I hugely appreciate your work and uploads.
RUclips (erratically) sends me notifications when it feels some kind of interesting comment has been made on a past video, and this came in just as I was doing email this morning.
As for the move, it's a very long story but the simple answer is that as US pop music began to take over the world in that post-war period, the old 'dance orchestras' were falling out of favour, so my Dad's employment situation was looking shaky (he was a sax player in one of the top groups of the time). He saw a chance to join a Canadian military band (they must have been advertising in London for musicians), and grabbed it.
@@seseragistudio I was expecting there to be a mundane answer to the question, but that's actually really interesting, your father must have been an extraordinary player if he earned a position in the military band of the 2nd biggest nation on Earth, especially as a foreigner. Anyway your comment revealed that its morning time in Japan, which in turn reminded me that its 2.00 at night here in Ireland, so I suppose i should be heading off to bed. Once again, T'is an honour to converse with you!!
Actually, it was the other way around. The new job in Canada was something that basically any musician could do (like a school band); it was his previous work that was 'top class'. Back in the day, that orchestra (the Oscar Rabin Orchestra) was famous, travelling all over the country, doing live radio shows every week, and drawing big crowds to their events. Girls lined up at the front of the dance floor to get a good view of the 'stars'. My mother tells a story of holding me in the hospital (he was off touring with them) and listening to a BBC broadcast of the band together with some of the nurses. And there was a 'shoutout' ... something like, "One of the members of the band is passing out cigars this evening. Baritone sax player Roy Bull became a father earlier today! Congratulations to him, wife Betty, and young David ..." etc. etc. So it seems that I got my first 'brush with fame' when not even a day old ... :-)
