This was 1968, I was 18 then. It is now 2023 and these words still hold true. All I ask people is to be real. Don’t take life as a joke and don’t take my kindness for weakness!!!❤

It was her favorite song before she lost the battling to cancer, I wish I could change the hands of time, I miss her smiles, she was always there for me and our lovely daughter, and I never miss a moment with her, life could be so unfair most times, there is some pain, I will cry in vain but won’t let you know how I will feel yes, I will miss you to the core! but some times i wonder why bad thing always happen to good people. Oh the games people play now
Every night and every day now
Never meaning what they say now
    Never saying what they mean
And they wile away the hours
    In their ivory towers
Till they're covered up with flowers
In the back of a black limousine whoa
La-da da da da da da da
La-da da da da da de
    Talking 'bout you and me
    And the games people play
Oh we make one another cry
Break a heart then we say goodbye
Cross our hearts and we hope to die
That the other was to blame whoa
    Neither one will give in
So we gaze at our eight by ten
Thinking 'bout the things that might have been
And it's a dirty rotten shame whoa
    Talking 'bout you and me
And the games people play now
    Oh yeah
    All right
    Oh yeah
    Come on
    Oh
    Come again
    People walking up to ya
    Singing glory Hallelujah
And they're tryin' to sock it to you
In the name of the Lord
They're gonna teach you how to meditate
Read your horoscope, cheat your fate
And further more to hell with hate
Come on and get on board whoah
La-da da da da da da da
La-da da da da da de
    Talking 'bout you and me
    And the games people play
    Now wait a minute
Look around tell me what you see
What's happening to you and me
    God grant me the serenity
To just remember who I am whoah
'Cause you've given up your sanity
For your pride and your vanity
    Turn your back on humanity
I keep talking 'bout you and me baby
And the games people play now lala
La-da da da da da da da
La-da da da da da de
I keep talking 'bout you and me
Oh and the games people play
I wonder can you come now, play

@grams Rivera Thanks for your quick reply. I am glad that you liked Okinawa very much. BTW do you know the book (creative fiction or a memoir?) called Wild Tales from the East --- Okinawa Nights (1968-1972) by Christopher Brice? You might find it interesting to you. It includes a lot of lyrics of pop songs you could hear on BC Street or elsewhere near the bases in those days.😀

Yeah, now that my girlfriend is gone and I look at her 8x 10, this part really rang true:
      "we make one another cry
Break a heart then we say goodbye
Cross our hearts and we hope to die
That the other was to blame
But neither one will ever give in
So we gaze at an 8 x 10
Thinkin' 'bout the things that might have been
And it's a dirty rotten shame"
No wonder it won song of the year, in a very competitive time.
As for being underrated in the music biz, he knew he was never promised a rose garden.

This song actually makes me cry! I was only 9 & knew most of the lyrics to this song, I didn't know what it meant back then, when I finally understood what this song is abt it made me realize that ppl are cruel & narcissistic, I already knew that but it really sank in when I was 24 & getting divorced, I didn't know anything at that tender age & had 2 children, this song helped me to get through a very difficult time in my life. I know a couple who have been together 29 going through the same thing he's singing abt in this song. I adore Mr Joe South's music, lyrics & the down-to-earth type of person he was. This is my fav song by him & my 2nd fav song is Walk A Mile In My Shoes. He wrote alot of music that he didn't get credit for! When Loretta Lynn first sang I Never Promised You A Rose Garden ppl raved, they went crazy, Joe South wrote that song. Hush, a song that Deep Purple sang & even put it on one of their albums was written by Joe South, there is alot he didn't get credit for & many, many ppl today don't even know who the original artist or lyrics were written when Johnny Cash sang his song, Elvis, there are alot of others he wrote music for. Some do say that Joe South wrote a song for their band but for others who sang his songs w/o acknowledging him.
