THE DRESS WASN'T EVEN PRETTY!!! It looked like a DIY prom dress, and that's simply because they let Emma design her own, instead of, you know...the seasoned costume design professional. I'm glad someone finally said Emma Watson is boring, because I couldn't stand her. The side characters were better than the mains, and they took away so much material from them they had no chance of saving the movie.
DIY prom dress hahahaha So true. I wanted a gorgeous impressive fairy tale dress. Like when Belle first comes out of the door in the 1991 version we are surprised with the beautiful dress. Emma's dress was soooo bad. It looked like something a girl in 2018 would wear to a picnic.
Most Belle cosplay dresses are better than the 2017 movie. And Watson was so obsessed with being a Strong Female Character that she refused corsets or stays and the fact that the 1700s was obsessed with cleavage and bared shoulders, especially in France, I’m sure Watson didn’t want her breasts so obvious (children’s movie, I guess, so it could be justified). But it looks more like a Chinese knock off of a Simplicity Halloween costume pattern Should have been in gold and yellow brocades and satin and have some weight to it, Instead, it just looks cheap and light
I don't know about the dress but I know she refused to wear a corset because a misguided attempt at a feminist stance and a myth. Corsets were comfortable and the exaggerated waist in pictures is literal Photoshop or the painter painting the waist smaller and probably the layering of petticoats to
I'm glad Doug addressed how in this version, many of the townspeople were wearing blue. The whole point of Belle being the only one wearing blue is because she's an outcast and doesn't quite fit in with the others. In this one? A shit ton of people that judge her wear blue! It misses the whole point.
Laylanie The hypocrisy of you saying that while getting mad at my opinion. Maybe it is an unimportant detail, but it's one of the many details and charms about the original that this one failed to capture. It's a lifeless, hollow adaption.
Jamie, I am trying not to be rude here, but you don't know anything about filmmaking, do you? Visual storytelling ring a bel with ya? It's an important aspect of many films, and it ads more dimension to the film. It's usually targeted more at the subconscious. And why not jut let her fucking wear blue? I actually have not seen this, but from all I've heard and seen, they did not do a very good job just making a MOVIE. I mean, to remove that clever storytelling element makes no sense. You know what else happens in this? A BOY IS TURNED INTO A BEAST BY A HAG AND HIS SERVANTS BECOME ANIMATE HOUSEHOLD OJECTS, AND PEOPLE THINK EMMA WATSON (Well, her Belle) CAN SING! And it's too farfetched to have only Belle wear blue?
YES. THANK YOU. All of the above and more! I could've written an essay why this movie was bad. And you wrote it for me in video form, so thanks. Also, it gives me warm fuzzies that you guys talked so much about how great the animation of the original one was, particularly the Beast. He was animated by my hero Glen Keane, and I felt so much of Keane's brilliant portrayal of the Beast was lost in this remake. So thank you for appreciating the hard work and passion geniuses like Glen Keane and James Baxter put into the original.
Hey Rebecca (hope you don’t mind me calling you by your real name). I though it was bad as well, and yes I know I might of come 5 years late, but this remake just puts in more plotholes for starters. The travelling book serves no purpose other than Belle seeing her mother. I could go on and on but I better not. Disney are gonna go broke anyways
im so pissed off at the genius ending that doug and rob gave us because it would have been such a better ending and it would have given the movie an identity!! also how much a of a more fucked up villain death is that than the original, i mean even with the cut one where he was devoured by wolves i feel like that one was just rehashing the lion king with scar and just omg the poetry, the drama ooh, that would have been so good!!
Gotta admit though, the song Evermore was fantastic. Probably the only great thing about this god awful movie... Eh, it was still, better than the Last Jedi I guess. Anyway, from one of the Oo-De-Lally's of yours, love your stuff!
In this new one, the old woman just busts the door open and interrupts a party and just throws a rose at the prince.........umm if someone just invades my home in the middle of a gathering and goes "here's a rose"....I'd be like "wtf please leave. why did you invade my home?"....regardless of what she looked like.
Yeah, I saw the remake, and not only do I agree with a majority of this review, but the my biggest gripe is the ending. Obviously SPOILERS, but... Okay, in the original, the Beast is dying. Belle is crying for him. She whispers "I love you" ONE SECOND before the final rose petal falls, ultimately breaking the spell. This one? She's STILL crying over him. The last petal falls. All the characters slowly turn inanimate. The Beast is dead. THEN she says "I love you". The Enchantress walks in and is like, "Eh screw it, the kids need their happy ending." And she brings EVERYTHING back to life. I SERIOUSLY wish I was joking. So remember kids: if someone you love is dying, an Enchantress will come by and bring them back! It ALWAYS works. I don't care if it's a fairy tale; YOU DON'T GET AWAY WITH THAT. The original was VERY precise about reading between the lines when it comes to enchantments, and this remake only makes you realize how brilliantly the original was structured.
PTMWontDie2 My god, I HATED that change! It honestly baffles me that the enchantress was in the movie at all. Why? In the original, she was only there as set up for the story. Here, she shows up randomly for really no purpose whatsoever ever except to be the deus ex machina in the last 5 minutes. The only movie with a worse one than that was Fantastic Beasts.
PTMWontDie2 To be fair, I thought that the ending with all of them starting to turn inanimate in the remake was only one of two things that they did that I wished they did in the original. But before the last petal falls. The impact would be much stronger then.
Samuel Langhus oh you guys are bullshitting here, it's like your saying we need a timer for a love story and anyone who doesn't fall in love soon will become a monster forever, it doesn't matter if that was changed it's still gives a sad scene like with the objects turning inanimate and it doesn't ruin the story at all, you all need to stop whining and move on
1994theanimalman 2354 The servants becoming permanently objects was well done, and it added some extra impact to the end. However, changing the way the curse was broken does have a significant impact on how the ending is perceived. In the original, when Belle breaks the curse as the last petal falls, it resonates because she, and by extension Beast, are the ones who ended the curse. The events that we saw play out, their struggles, their effort, their time... it's ultimately rewarded by the breaking of the curse. They made their own happy ending, and it completes their story arc perfectly. By having the sorceress break the curse, it makes it so than an outside force is responsible for their happy ending. It shows that this whole time, the curse could have been broken at any time, for any reason, just because the sorceress felt like it. Additionally, it invalidates much of the main character's actions, since they ultimately had little bearing on the final outcome. The sorceress is a classic example of a deus ex machina, a force that comes out of nowhere and resolves some major conflict(s) in the story, particularly at the end. Like in Fantastic Beasts (spoilers), a random magical chemical that is mentioned once as having possibly interesting just happens to be a memory wiping agent, so his giant bird makes a rainstorm and distributes the chemical in it to wipe the whole city's memory. It's an extremely lazy and convenient, and out-of-nowhere way to rectify the issue of the wrecked city without having to deal with the ramifications of a massive conflict. The sorceress is very similar: she has limited build up in the story, and comes in at end out of nowhere and (literally) magically fixes the tragic ending. Had the writers worked her in better and reshaped the plot, this kind of ending could have worked. However, as it stands, it feels like just a way to incorporate that last scene transformation scene in without needing to alter the script much to justify it.
1994theanimalman 2354 What Dialga said. You don't seem to either know or care about the premise of the _entire movie_. In one, love and compassion for what makes one human trumped how disgusting our actions may be. In the other, things happen because the sorceress _makes_ them happen. Love doesn't succeed, except in maybe persuading the deity (essentially) that the curse can be lifted, _after_ the curse ended. Why did they have to pull that stunt? By definition, it cheapened the love Belle had for the Beast, because even though the sorceress set up the curse to be broken if the Beast gets loved as an individual, _it doesn't._ And the one who set up the curse to be broken removes it herself _after_ whatever parameters she made in the first place were not fulfilled, as if she decided suddenly that "the parameters were too much." That turns her even more into an ex machina, and says that "love that isn't real love (somehow) is good enough to be the theme for this movie!"
My friends all bashed on me for not liking it, glad to see I'm not the only one. It really did suck. They took no chances, there was LESS chemistry between Belle and Beast than in the original. The library scene had NO hype like it did in the original. I was really expecting more. At least Cinderella tried a couple of new things and the dress was actually pretty. Belle's dress (because of Emma Watson deciding to take over the costume design) looks like a cheap and crappy prom dress. This is one of the worst Disney remakes I've seen so far.
Ironically Emma Watson said in several interviews that she wanted to make Belle and the Beast falling in love feel more natural and realistic than it did in the animated movie, but it feels way more forced in this version. Also why did they have a predominately British cast when the movie is set in FRANCE???!!!
Actualy there was no falling in love in the 2017 movie. I don t buy that as love. There is no chemistry, little interaction and both Belle and the Beast are egocentric and jerks. I don t like Emma as Belle at all. And she and her so called feniniste ideas ruined Belle s character.
Emma didn't want to consult Paige O'Hara for her take on belle BC she didn't want any influence when playing the character herself. this was said in her interview with entertainment magazine. I like Emma as a person, but I think her decision not to talk to Paige spoke volumes and showed me that she only understood half of her character. the whole reason beast falls for her, or at least the main reason, is because she is warm and kind and gentle. I got NONE of that with Emma. it felt like she was trying too hard to prove she was an active heroine and completely devalued Belle's emotional side to her "intellect". um....belle was a fantasy reader but they totally nixed that to make her more smart-sounding....which is fine, yay for it!... but then don't completely remove the rest of her charm with it.
Another reason why the development between the beast and Belle worked was because she wasn’t afraid to put him in his place forcing him to think about his behavior while also giving him credit where credit is due such as when she thanked him for saving her life. Emma Watson’s Belle just whines all the time.
I get frustrated when Belle is stereotyped as a nerdy smart person just because she likes books. She was a woman who got lost in her thoughts but was kind, loving, curious, determined and warm. Disney also made Rapunzel as a very similar character, and she also was very into books but for some reason that isn't as emphasized in marketing as for Belle. It's not bad for girls to be intelligent at all, but that shouldn't replace personality. This movie tried to change Belle and Maurice' s personalities to make Belle more "progressive". Totally unnecessary. She was already a strong amazing woman. If she also happened to have those quirks that would be fine, but the most important thing about her is her common sense and heart.
My big pet peeve now is to have a “science girl” in movies trying to be progressive. Not that the writers actually ever do anything with “science girl” or have her science skills be relevant to the plot. The Dumbo remake, the 5th Pirates of the Caribbean are big offenders. It is just another version of “not like other girls” and “I want to be known for my brain” and the character instead of being curious, inquisitive, having specific interests with science (usually it’s just a basic “science” rather than something specific like geology and she loves collecting rocks for example), the writers just end up giving her a flat, 1 dimensional “science girl” personality.
I always felt like Belle represented independence. Most people in the (original)film were always trying to tell her how be, because that's how they live. Ultimately, mocking/shunning her for choosing to think for herself. With that said, I do see your point... well said! 🤔
It frustrates me now, the more I think about these remakes that they think they should change the character a little bit when the characters were already perfect in the original, I feel like the only actress I can appreciate playing a Disney princess is lily James cause she portrayed Cinderella well (wasn't that perfect though).
You are the first critic who had the balls to say the truth....that was literally everything I thought about the movie. One of my friends fell asleep, one tried killing himself in the first half, and I started laughing at everything, convincing myself their goal was to actually make it as bad as possible and they are just messing with us....
clearly none of u r true fans of beauty and the beast because this movie is an exact replica of the original animated one with added songs and added scenes. If it sucked why did it make a over a billion in the box office. I'm waiting.
And in the end, "The Shape of Water" is a better "Beauty and the Beast" than this live-action mess, also yeah thank you Disney for reminding me to just watch the original classic that I have loved since I was a little kid and it one of my top 3 favorite movies of all time
Sarah Hawkins was the prefect Beauty inside Belle, and Octavia Spencer, the Best Black Female Pal that you can have. Michael Shannon, a perfect POS Gaston too... The original was 200% honest with its subject, a job of passionated peoples, indeed.
They screwed up the library scene which pissed me off to no end. In the animated movie, he gave her the library because he wanted to something special for her and it was this big romantic gestures. In this movie it was like, "oh you like to read? Here's some books. You can have them if you want. Some of them are in Greek."
kitkatt24 He found out she likes to read, and therefore probably wanted to give her the library as a special gift, I mean, she saved his life prior, and he was already growing closer to her.
Huh. I honestly found this an improvement. In the original it's Lumiere's suggestion and he just goes with it. What does she like? Oh yeah, she told us she likes books, so you should show her the library. I really like how this one stemmed from them having an actual discussion about literature and he pretty much accidentally showed her the most amazing library she's ever seen. It also showed them sharing an interest, and I got the impression that Belle even appreciated that he had a different opinion from hers, which is something she hadn't really encountered before. I love the original, but to me this came off as more organic relationship building.
I like Emma Watson fine, but she felt really miscast here. I feel like she only got the lead to sell tickets and not because she was the best actress for the part.
@@FarahA27 Yeah because she suuuuuuuuuuuuuuucks. I never watched Harry Potter. I was never interested. I mean, I was very aware I was watching her act in this frame by frame remake of The animated original. Good for her, she did her job. She is very plain and unappealing too. Belle was very pretty. Not Princess Jasmine pretty(smoking hot) but I could definitely understand Gaston's infatuation.
Another thing about the color blue- In the animated feature, Belle wearing blue was clever foreshadowing, because in that particular time period, making blue fabric was an expensive process, and thus wearing such clothing was a luxury that only wealthy or royal individuals could afford. It was subtlety hinting that Belle would eventually become royalty herself.
I feel so bad for the kids that are growing up thinking the remakes are the originals. I am keeping my Disney collection and preserving them to show my children. they will grow to appreciate the art of the originals
I know what you mean. Parents need to do better with showing their kids classic movies. I feel depressed that most kids I know and some of my 20-something friends first watched the new rebooted Star Wars movies. It completely fucking spoils the original to watch the new ones first! Ugh. I'm not even that big of a Star Wars fan but that kills me that people think watching that first is a good idea, especially since TFA was just a badly done rehash of A New Hope.
Emma Watson was a terrible choice for Belle, but so many people got defensive because any criticism of her singing or acting ability meant that you hate women. The truth is that Emma Watson can't sing or act.
Captain_Hat Funny thing is that before Emma Watson was cast, Emma Roberts, Kristen Stewart, Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, and Emmy Rossum were considered for the role of Belle. And everyone knows Kristen Stewart and Emma Watson wouldn't have worked.
Rebecca L Perfect post right here. Watson's sense of entitlement sounds unbelievable, especially regarding the costumes. Dan Stevens is right next to her sweating to death under fifty pounds of green-screen Beast bulk football padding, and she's whining about the corset on her ballgown. Ugh.
Why are so many people complaining about Doug and Robs thoughts? This isn't Nostalgia Critic, this is Sibling Rivalry. They're not supposed to be analytical and shit, they're just saying their honest thoughts.
Okay, two things: First of all, TO ALL WRITERS: Please do not put teleportation in your stories without thinking about its natural consequences. Seriously, don't. Second of all, if I was the Enchantress and wanted to punish Gaston, I wouldn't turn him into a beast. Oh, no. I'd turn him into a 5-foot-2 moderately ugly girl with minimal muscle mass. That would break him in a couple hours at most.
Ashley, because it would steal Gaston of everything he defines himself by, making him into what he derides most. Stripping him of his looks, masculinity, and strength and replaced with weak and feminine would destroy him.
Michael Ramon Indeed the teleportation kinda breaks the movie, it is the problem of giving too much power to the protagonists, so they looked really stupid for not exploiting that power all the time.
If you're a man and you don't like Emma Watson, the general reponse you get is, "But she's so hot. Dude, you HAVE to be gay." If you're female, like myself, and you don't like Emma Watson---like myself, I hear "Yep. You're just jealous because you don't look like her and you haven't achieved as much as her." Every time. Both of those totally unreasonable.
I once got called gay for not fancying Kristen Stewart even though I'm straight. The guy who accused me of that was convinced that because he had a crush on Kristen Stewart any man who didn't was gay.
+Polyhymnia Outwardly, I don't find her pretty either. She's not ugly by any means, she's just very plain. In Harry Potter all the boys fancied Hermione, but in reality all of the other actresses playing Cho, Lavender and especially Luna and so on, would be the centers of attention. I think it's a bit of an idea planeted into our heads that she is Hermione, she was pushed on us, she must be beautiful.
Every Old Vs New ends in a tie-breaker, but given Doug's opinions on this film, I can't imagine him giving the remake enough points for that to happen. And there's no point in making an Old Vs New that doesn't have a tiebreaker.
Same. I love it when they're both doing the "sibling rivalry" together, rather than just Doug talking in front of the camera alone. The way the play off each other is very entertaining. Doug's "solo" reviews are just boring.
13:55 AMEN!!!! as someone who's studying to become an Opera Singer, I am SO GLAD that you guys are as mad as I am that they only use actors with "pretty faces" in musicals nowdays! #SINGERSMATTERS
Saw it for myself yesterday, Emma Watson is... It's so bad. Can't believe THAT'S her ACTING. She says everything at the same volume. She always makes the weird troll face Doug talks about. She's only got two emotional expressions. And the chemistry thing is completely true. Can't believe this woman is still acting. She has other talents.
I feel like a big problem with these Disney live action remakes is that live action just can't fully replicate hand drawn animation, no matter how well done it. There are just elements like the colors, the exaggerated expressions, the flow and movement, that just cannot translate no matter how much effort is put in.
Finally! People who aren't under Disney's spell and can admit it wasn't good at all! "It filled in a lot of plot holes" Not really! Questions that used to be answered "because magic~!" Were still answered with "because magic~!"!!
Which scenes in the movie did that? The only scene that actually did something like that was when the villagers forgot about the castle because of Agatha's spell.
They are actually against these Live-Action remakes for awhile. Doug hates Maleficent, Rob hated Cinderella, Doug hates The Jungle Book, and now they both hate this one.
Movies should not be made to fix plot holes. Especially the one where they add the abusive father to make the cast being cursed justified. Why do they need to be justified? It’s not like cursing an entire castle because you met one douche within a hundred people is a very nice thing to do in the first place
www.yahoo.com/movies/disney-will-stir-the-black-cauldron-again-181011796.html Your wishes may be granted. They bought the movie rights to the entire book series.
Fonzzz002 A rated R remake of The Black Cauldron would be awesome. It can be a deep, violent, hunting horror film with themes of death and mortality. I'd be all for that.
The best scene is when Beast whacked Belle in the face with that big-ass snowball, the whole audience laughed for two minutes after that happened LMFAOOOO
I sort of wonder what happened after that though, because they just fade to another scene like it was nothing. Was she alright? If not then what did they do with her? and even if she was, was she mad at him or what?
I liked the live action, but I too liked the animated more. The original was perfect, so I don't think that it's possible to make a better version. Altho I also agree that the live action is terrible. It's just a guilty pleasure of mine.
Oh yes, it 'blew' so hard that it's gotten over 700 million in the box office in two weeks and in some theatres there were standing ovations at the ending. Yeah, sounds like the PINICAL of bad... I apologize in advance if my sarcasm is rusty.
The dress can be designed without it. I've seen it before and it still look good. The corset wasn't needed but to make is so different than everybody knows, there is going to be a problem.
Yeah, I know. Like if you are remaking the movie but you know something is iconic, don't let your views on things mess things up to the point it's bad.
Who said anything about whining? Just making a point out. And at this day an age, it shouldn't be that hard to make that dress but still make if function. If you don't believe me, go look up cosplay videos of Belle. The dress has been made before to flow and to be made to move in. Thing is that too much modernization took something that was beautiful and somewhat fitting of the time period and made it plain and out of place.
Bat Croft22 Wow. First of all I wasn't judging his opinion on this movie cause I never saw this movie and I'm not planning to in like..centuries. Even if I have whether I liked it or not, it doesn't matter what he thinks about it and it's not gonna upset me. More power to him. Second, I was stating the fact that he hated it this movie and from the beginning I knew he was gonna rub his opinion on ppl' faces considering the fact their might be a certain group of whiny crackheads out there who "loved" this movie and take that shit seriously and want to shove their opinions down his throat thinking it's gonna change his mind which it won't because it's his thoughts and we should all respect it like grown ass adults. And it's hilarious how many enemies he's gonna make after watching this video. Third, get your eyes checked out.
United_World's Finest Ok first I'm sorry I didn't thinked about this comment a lot.I usually do it,but I thought I make an exception.Second you need to work on your manners, because it's not really nice that you basically called my blind.I made a mistake?Yes.Was I an asshole in that comment? No.I didn't say that you are stupid or I said any curse words.I say this because you made a pretty good reply which ends with a pretty jerk sentence.
This remake had no life, character, humanity, or colors. I tried looking at it from an unbiased point of view when I went to go see it but all I wanted was to go home and watch the animated classic because of how boring and lifeless the live action was.
People These Days Glad to see people agree with me. It gets so much praise for some reason. I just don't understand... I mean, the Beast had no humanity or real character, Belle wasn't interesting, the father was dull, Gaston wasn't as: cunning, manipulative, prissy, or menacing like the animated classic, the household servants had the personality of a cupboard, and oh so much more to say about this craze-fest. I hope Doug does a full review with this movie because there's so much more the remake lacks. Goodness...
SO many people are going "aww it is so romantic!" And I am just sitting here wondering what movie they watched because seriously, there was NO romance in this film, there was TWO instances where there was meant to be but really, take them away or class them as friend scenes only (as they felt more like two people getting to know each other in a friendly way than anything more) and that is what you have, two friends and that is it, there is NO chemistry to make it even remotely feel like it was romantic. I have SO many problems with this film, I have already written at least a page what I found wrong with it and it just keeps growing.
Alicia Martin Exactly! Beauty and the Beast had no romantic chemistry at all. Hell, the Beast doesn't even say "I love her..." after he lets Belle go. It's damn Mrs. Potts who does it for him. It the original you can see his love pour out of him. He plays with her hair, he gets nervous when they are in the ball room, Belle rests her head on his chest and closes her eyes... ugh, so beautiful. In the remake they have little to no genuine interactions that told me they were falling in love.
Jamie Cobb You obviously have no idea what romance is, go watch the original again because a few things that look to be in the same place as the original doesnt ke it is exactly like the original when everything else is wrong.
Emma Watson only got the role because of her Harry Potter fanbase, a franchise Disney envies. I knew it smelled like trouble when she posted on Facebook (after her casting was officially announced) that she would be taking singing lessons. :-/ I had hopes for Emmy Rossum, who looks uncannily like Belle and can actually sing.
Daniel Radcliffe has proven himself as an actor. The Woman in Black, Victor Frankenstein and Imperium, sure non of them are greats but I now no longer instantly think Harry Potter when I hear his name
While I don't think he's as bad as Emma, there still seems to be something 'off' about his acting. It's like he's still trying to hard to prove himself. I don't think it comes across as over-the-top but it just feels unatural (for lack of a better word). He's been jumping from project to project since Potter ended and I really think it would do well for him to take a year off and then find a really good project, even if it's TV.
It was sooo boring. My boyfriend and I fell asleep several times. Anything that anyone liked about this film was purely fueled by nostalgia for the original, but looking at this adaptation solely for what it is, its booooring. Go read the book, watch the animated feature OR see the Broadway play......OR see the short stage production at the Disney parks.....so many other ways to enjoy this exact.same.story.
Well, Lefou was interesting, but yeah, the rest you can get from somewhere else. Besides, if you want to see a bad minion become a better person: Gravity Falls Meet the Robinsons Emperor's New Groove Star VS the Forces of Evil Aladdin Series
I think what really kind of hurt me for this film was, I watched the original over and over again, with and without audio commentary. What really bothers me is that the producers said Howard Ashman was treating the original like a stage production, and he wanted actors and Actress who could SING and ACT. But no we have to have name brand actors and actresses who just can't pass the bar. Beauty and the Beast is already a huge name, people will still watch it if it had no name actors and actresses! I think an Old vs. New would be good for this movie because it can analyze the new and old versions, what movies did things well and what they absolutely missed. Also, I like that Belle is the inventor in this one, but she has one scene, just one scene where she invents something. It would have been nice if they brought it back into the movie as something the beast could appreciate or something.
Basically, even she just help and support her father to built the woodcutting machine, Cartoon Belle is close to be a First Industrial Revolution Tycoon 20-40 years before the real timeline.
Giovanni Orellana There really is no point of that. I mean, no matter what side of the fence your on with the 2017 version, the 1991 classic is gonna win by a landslide.
Agreed, except for La Fou and Gaston gave great performances. But Emma Watson was horrible; and with her so present in the film, it really dragged it down.
This isn't relevant, but as far as the Harry Potter trio goes, I always felt that Rupert Grint was somewhat underrated as an actor. Obviously he was the cheesy grinned, pink faced, scaredy cat sidekick of a character, but all nostalgia aside, I can honestly look back and appreciate his work throughout the series - particularly in the second and last few films. He had great comedic timing, and that guy is a natural with expressiveness and reactions. But yeah, I'm not gonna lie, I'm a Harry Potter fanboy - more so for the books, but I grew up alongside the trio, so I naturally have a ton of nostalgic love for all of those guys. I guess that's why I keep giving Emma Watson chances as an actor, and I'm still excited to see this, regardless of the negative criticisms. And I'll judge it fairly, the same way I've judged all of their work after Harry Potter - which has definitely been hit or miss. Can't help it, though, I love those guys, and I can't help but to support them wherever they go as a fan, but also critique their work as a sensible and logic driven viewer.
He was a fun guy to watch, despite the fact that they felt Emma Watson needed to steal all of the scenes he should have had. He's also the only one of the trio that seemed to stay relatively sane.
Oh yeah, definitely, I agree. But as far as an actor, I do think that those movies helped him grow into those shoes and really shine by the end of it - despite the fact that, like you said, they sort of messed up the character and created a separate narrative for the films basically.
Totally hahaha I agree. Although, from what I heard, he did go on a shopping spree and buy a bunch of crazy stuff when Harry Potter ended. Imo, though, that sort of highlights his sanity, because I know if I had that much money, I'd have to buy something on the same level as an ice cream truck, just to stay true to my childhood dreams of getting rich and buying silly stuff with the money. But yeah, overall, I do think he stayed humble and didn't seem to really care much about maintaining a mainstream Hollywood career, as opposed to the other two, who seemed to try to stay as relevant and prolific as possible. But that's no slight to the other two, I love all of them, and like I said originally, I do try to keep up with all of them as much as possible. I just try to stay not blinded by nostalgia when I actually sit down to watch their new films.
I'm sorry, but it pisses me off how people cry over Doug being negative over some movies. If you want nothing but happy and positive reviews, then please stop watching Doug and go to some other channel.
I refuse to see it, because why? Why does Disney feel the need to remake Beauty and the Beast!? You have the original! It's a timeless classic with wonderful animation, Great characters, chemistry
Emma Watson's dress though... man they REALLY wanted to piss off the fans of the animated one, didn't they? They couldn't even be bothered to get the fucking DRESS right.
Jace Gem It's so true!! The style doesn't make sense. If you're gonna be historically accurate for the time period & the location, then you need to be accurate with Belle's dress. It didn't make sense to change the style of it.
That and it's just HORRIBLY under detailed. It is a PLAIN YELLOW DRESS. Belle's dress in the animated one had frills and was poofy and had all these details, Watson's dress? Just a flat yellow dress with hardly any poof and no frills or design to it. THEY EVEN MADE IT A TEACUP SLEEVE DRESS INSTEAD OF AN OFF THE SHOULDER ONE. How few fucks do these people give?
To be fair, even if Ava DuVernay directed Breaking Dawn, it would still be horrible. They're horrible books, making a movie based off of them would be horrible, no matter how talented the people working on it are.
Who knew that a live action remake of an animated masterpiece would be inferior to the animated original? Oh yeah, everybody. Why do we throw our money at these remakes? I sure can't wait for that Ghost in the Shell.
To be fair to Emma Watson when you've played the same character since childhood and said character takes up half your life it doesn't leave much room to grow as an actor
This, your Nostalgia Critic review and Lindsay Ellis’s video inspired me to do a school speech on the Beauty And The Beast remake. I actually had some classmates and my teacher change their minds about the film.
agree with all of this EXCEPT NEITHER BELLE HAS STOCKHOLM SYNDROME because belle has no problem calling out the beast when he mistreats her, disobeying him, running away when he's out of line and returning only BC the mob started; not because she was brainwashed to. she only grows feelings when he starts treating her right. Emma really had no charm or whimsicality and it's a shame BC I like her as a person but she really butchered my favorite princess with her "down with princess, up with modern woman" mentality. original belle was already progressive, all she did was remove her feminine side. love her teaching that little girl to read and inventing but that's it. so disappointing
She moulded Belle so she was more like her. I was hoping that Watson would bring something different after having only seen her as Hermione, but to me, it felt more like Emma/Hermione in an alternate fairytale universe. She didn't quite become the character enough, I thought.
Marni Stone Amen! Compare her to Lily James as Cinderella. Lily was able to shed her modern persona to become a timeless character, gentle and strong and smart without being arrogant. Watson is so mired in her angry, bitter politics that she can never quite disappear into a character unless that character is just as harsh and smug as she is. Seriously, why didn't they pick Emmy Rossum? She looks the part much more than Watson, and say what you will about The Phantom of the Opera '04, she acted and sung the heck out of her role.
Marni Stone Ikr? Apparently she was one of their contenders for the part, but Disney wanted to exploit Harry Potter nostalgia and pander to SJWs with one fell swoop, so Watson it was. What a waste 😢 In the small comfort department, at least they didn't go with Kristen Stewart. Seriously. They were considering her. (shudders)
I think she’s okay. Definitely not the best either. To be far to her though, her two most recent movies- This one and the circle- weren’t that good to begin with
A part I find insulting is when they go to Belle's childhood home and we see Notre Dame, reminding me of another animated Disney musical that I think would work in live action.
I would only be in favour of a live action version of that particular musical if they stayed true to the original story, i.e. Including the deaths of the protagonists.
I have seen online that they would eventually give Hunchback the live action treatment. But the story will be told from "Esmerelda's" point of view! OH BOY! I just hope they wont screw it up! and also they should stick to the Original novel by Victor Hugo. it is dark and tragic but very reminiscent to the scorce material.
I hope they stick to the live action musical version, which has an amazing soundtrack and stays true to the original story for the most part, just without Gringoire.
At least The Jungle Book did it's own thing. It deviated from the original Disney film when it could, doing different aspects that held together on its own, and the CGI animation is absolutely phenomenal, further making it stands on its own and worthy of just seeing it on the big screen. This Beauty and the Beast just felt like it was just the original done in live action.
You realize how many butthurt Disney fans bitched that Live Action The Jungle Book was too dark and too different? The Disney company most likely tried making this the same as the original since they honestly don't know what you ungrateful people want
"After the travesty that was Maleficent, I think I prefer they don't deviate that much from the original." I will say with movies like The Jungle Book that were just okay, some deviation in the remake could do it good. Besides the deviation of the general plot, I also like the Mowgli in the live action much better in the original; he's much more bearable and more selfless than the original little shit who couldn't take a hint of what danger he was in.
There are different ways a movie or tv series can piss me off, disrespect for the source material (BvS, Last Airbender) bad writing and characters (sword art online) but then there's this one: Beauty and the Beast 2017. Made for anyone who thinks that animation is clearly not to be taken seriously, so they need a shot for shot adaptation OF an adaptation, made for anyone who thinks a movie that got best picture nomination can somehow be improved, and for an audience who grew up and loved with all their heart the original masterpiece. "Remember how much you loved the original? Don't you just wish you could be watching that again?" Say what you will about Cinderella and Jungle Book, they had parts that could be improved, rather if it was characters like the prince or make it a little darker. The 1991 version was a perfect movie and stands the test of time. Disney's remake of Lion King apparently will have James Eral Jones back as Mufasa. What's the point? Why don't we just remake Toy Story with Tom Hanks and Tim Allan doing motion capture? Why don't we just do a live action version of every Simpson episode? I'm sorry, but no.
Well, Disney felt the need to remake the movie considering how far the technology and filmmaking has gone. Yeah ot's necessary but as long as it's an entertaining, enjoyable and well filmed one then i can't complain
A GriffinTV in my opinion live action versions of animated movies are POINTLESS why make a live action version of a animated movie when the animated version is just fine
I work at a movie theater, and when this movie came out, we had a special private screening for employees, where we watched the original animated film followed immediately by the remake, so we watched the new one with the original completely fresh in our minds. One aspect that was really noticeable in that regard was that the remake seemed really particular about mending all the plot oversights of the original, like debunking the belief that the Beast was a child when he was cursed, or how long the curse has been over the castle. I guess they wanted people to stop making internet parodies about these things, but I personally never had a problem with things like that. Those aren't the point of the story, and there's certainly not a need to completely redo the movie just to make a few slight adjustments.
I skipped the movie when it was in cinemas but I watched it yesterday and AMEN to all you said! The Be Our Guest scene cemented it for me. How can something so exuberant fall so flat?! I rewatched the original scene just now and the first few bars gave me goosebumps. This remake was tragic.
Eva Weiand While I thought the live-action remake was worse than the animated movie, I did actually think the Be Our Guest scene was more involving and looked better in this movie (although I guess the bad singing really did kill it).
Seeing a fellow Whovian in the comments makes me happy. :) I love that episode! I know that this is off-topic to the video, but, first Doctor/episode and favorite Doctor/episodes?
I completely agree about Emma Watson. She's a mediocre actress at best, but people keep trying to make her an A-list star. I can only assume because they had a crush on Hermione growing up.
I agree. People like the idea of Hermione but Emma Watson is pretty mediocre without that role. Just like how people think Jennifer Lawrence is a "strong female character" because she played Katniss even though everything she does is basic cookie-cutter acting.
+R Davis Link Oh hell no! Jennifer Lawrence is a highly overrated actress. I'm saying that people think of them as popular literary characters and not as actors. The reverse is true for Kristen Stewart, who everyone thinks is a shitty actress just because of Twilight, but she's really not that bad. Emma Watson is fine but wrong for the role of Belle. It seems like a good idea because Belle is like Hermione in princess form. I would prefer someone like Anna Kendrick and Hailee Steinfeld. For one, they are both singers and both have the personality to play a Disney princess.
I thought the book didn't actually take them to those places. I can't really describe what I thought it was. I guess a hologram comes close. But the point is is wasn't real. Like that's the cruel part of the book, you can go anywhere but you can't actually be there. I guess I read that so wrong
am i gonna get swamped with hate if i say that emma watson's performance reminds me of kristen stewart as bella? blank stares, open mouth, expressions of a slice of tofu, no chemistry with their love interests. they're like twins
I don't feel quite as much unfettered hatred towards this film as you two, but in all honesty, the remake was really not that great. Felt too safe and didn't take any chances. At best, it's inoffensive and just reminds me of how much I love the original.
Since Disney is working to capitalize on the "Hamilton" craze, with Lin-Manuel writing songs for Moana, maybe they could have gotten Phillipa Soo play Belle.
omg you guys you speak so many of my feelings. Like, after I left the movie I didn't speak because my roommate has such an obsession with Emma Watson that I knew I'd probably be homeless for speaking my true feelings. Like yes, I like Emma. She's a lovely person, she's ok as an actress, and honestly, as a regular person singing she's actually got an ok voice, but she's not capable of a lead in a musical. Or even a solo of any kind. But nooo my roommate likes her so much that he wouldn't even let me talk any negatives about the movie and he went on to say 'this was better than the original! Emma was better than the original! it was the best!' UUGGHH. I'm really glad I'm not alone on this is all I'm sayin. Thank you guys.
(I had to just add a small comment ammendment now that I've finished the video - I was looking for more information on the new songs, specifically who wrote them, and Google suggested 'did Alan Menkin wrote Mulan.' Also it corrected my 'did Alan Menkin write the new songs-' to 'did Alan Menkin wrote-' like......people. people please. PLEASE stop teaching Google bad grammar. :( )
The movie was OK, but my biggest problem was Emma Watson's acting, I didn't believe her anything, she only had like three faces in all the movie: smiling, crying and small smile, and it was so much difficult for me because I saw the movie dub and her voice actor in spanish was giving all into the performace, if you closed your eyes the voice give you a mental image with more emotion and character but with the film, the acting of Emma just feel so much empty and dull. What took me by surprise was ther acting with the CGI, the kid from the Jungle Book did a better job than her, and she has background working with it for YEARS, YEARS! I don't have anything against Emma, but I hate her performance in this, and I feel her out of place in the movie.
She's alright really, nothing about her ever blew me away, but I've seen far worse. How do you know the kid in the Jungle Book hasn't been acting for years? Also the directing may have had a loot to do with his performance.
my fav part of the movie was the most funniest thing (at least for me) was when the beast threw that snowball at belles face because for me it was very random and it looks like that knocked her dead XD
Buc Whovian, I honestly don't know if the kid has other work with CGI, but my point was that he did a better job (with or without the experience) than Emma who you expect more because the Harry Potter films have a lot of CGI. I know Emma can act at least decently but in this film, for me, was seeing her worst acting. Maybe it was the director, maybe was Emma herself, maybe it was because, as I said before, I watched the movie dub in spanish and not in english (which I take as the correct answer for my strong disliking, again, as I said before) :)
LeSage031 yeah... that smile bother me a lot in the movie. And there's a scene when I lost it, it's just a fraction of a second but when Belle falls to her knees to take the Beast into her arms when he's dying... Emma does the scene smiling (with the smile you describe)! and in the next she is crying. I think the director is at fault too for her acting :/
I also admit to a geeky thrill at seeing how they reimagine an animated film into live action. That's why I'm just waiting for them to do The Little Mermaid...just to see how the animal characters will be designed.
MrXemnas1992 same here , I love the new beauty and beast movie but if Disney insists on remaking all their classics they should do less famous movies like dumbo or Pinocchio
MrXemnas1992 There's already a live action Pinocchio from, oh I don't know, the 80s probably. I remember very scarce scenes from that movie like Pinocchio getting shot at the park and that being the reason he wasn't completely turned into a donkey because the water drained out of the holes in his chest and then when he realized what happened how scared he was that he kept repeating, "I don't wanna be a jackass". Legit, that is an actual scene in that movie. I need to find it and watch the whole thing, it's been years.
Deity1 Was that the Jonathan Taylor Thomas version (which I actually liked as a kid and I want Doug to review it) or one of the other handful of remakes that happened?
Wow. What a vitriolic comment section. Some people liked this movie. Others didn't. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. If you liked it, great! Watch clips, interviews, and relive the joy. If you didn't, great! Watch a different film that better suits your tastes. But being rude to people for liking or disliking someone isn't a constructive use of your time. I've yet to see a person on the internet change their opinion simply because they were insulted enough.
I'll be honest; I don't have really the right to judge this movie because my moviegoing experience was so bad that it distracted me from actually enjoying the movie. Hence, why I'll probably check it out once it comes out on Blu-ray or something. But trying to excuse that, I found it a mixed bag. A lot of stuff I didn't like, but some stuff I actually did like.
I mean, you can REALLY tell these Disney remakes are all cash grab, especially with the knowledge that Disney is literally going down the line of ALL the Disney animated films they've done and making them live action!!! Hold on to your hats, Doug and Rob, cause it's gonna be one ugly trend with Mulan, Lion King, and Aladdin coming out soon! God help us. #stoptheremakes
I'm pretty sure it's like some sort of moneymaking scheme. They make these dumb-ass movies to make money and then use the funds from that to put into what they're actually good at, the animated films.
well yeah, I agree. i know that Disney still definitely lets out true gems today. I believe this is just one of their trends that are not so creative, kind of like the direct-to-dvd sequels as doug said.
Mmker97 Little Mermaid is next and I'm scared to see casting Lin Manuel Miranda's doing the music though?? So the soundtrack might be good??? Please???????
oh. same thoughts, I forgot about that one lol. I think I just found too much comfort in the fact that the recent live action trailer that went viral wasn't Disney's lol
The original got TWO Academy Award Wins, actually: Musical Score and Best Song for "Beauty and the Beast", as well as nominations for the song "Belle" and "Be Our Guest." Best Picture nominee on top of all of that. This new one can only dream of topping the original in the awards category.
Thank you so much, gentlemen!! It's so nice to know I'm not alone! I hated Josh Gad's Le Fou. I don't care that "ooh, he's gay now! So revolutionary!" He was fucking BORING! Josh Gad should never, EVER be boring! And Belle was dislikeable, while Gaston wasn't dislikeable enough! How did that happen?? I DID, however, like Kevin Kline, and the Beast's new song. Those were good. And that's about it.
Yeah. If you're going to make a character gay actually do something with the character. Don't make them a token gay character who's there just to be a gay character just to be PC and avoid being called homophobic.
I think its really funny how they complain about the dress porn and the film lingering on it for the fans and whatnot, when EVERYONE I know who cared about the dress at all was... complaining about that ugly monstrosity, because it was an insult to the art of costume making. Just funny to see the different takes!
Watch the 2014 French version! It's a lot different, but it feels closer to the fairytale in my opinion, it's a lot more colourful but darker at the same time and gives a beautiful backstory of the characters.
I hate to be that person, but Belle DID eat in the original. During Be Our Guest she tasted the grey stuff, right before Something There she and the beast eat that porridge stuff in that cute scene where they drink from the bowels and she does eat a little right before the ball scene. With that out of the way, I want to thank you for this review, I felt like I was so alone in disliking this movie, because everyone and their mom was praising it before it even came out. The original was perfect. They took that perfection and made it worse. And look, I actually love Harry Potter, but Emma Watson was the complete wrong choice for this movie. I didn't think she was the worst, but all I could think was "Oh hey, Hermoine!", I never saw Belle. It might have helped if maybe she dyed her hair a darker brown or put more effort into her performance than pushing her feminist agenda. And I do not have a problem with feminism, but it just irked me that they kept bragging about how much better they made Belle, when she was arguably the first feminist princess. I mean, she wasn't looking for a prince, she had dreams of grandeur, she just did her own thing and didn't care what anyone else thought and she had an interesting personality. Also, she is not that great of a singer. I was listening to the audio they released on RUclips, then I listened to the original. And yeah, Paige O'Hara is the far superior Belle. What a waste.
AWseven11 The feminism stuff annoyed me, too. Belle in this movie was trying to be too revolutionary. Belle in the original just did her own thing and didn't care what anyone thought. She just was while this one was trying too hard.
Acrymon I got TRIGGERED when LaFou got crushed by the organ and Gaston just abandoned him. Man,we almost had a gay moment and Gaston сомрletely ruined it!
Meh, late is late but I need a place to say that the music from this version comes on the Pandora station we use at work and I can't get over how anemic it sounds! Why would you follow up a movie whose music was not only composed but recorded in a way that gives it a distinct "cast recording" sound, sung by real Broadway talent, later expanded to a Broadway stage production.... and then make the big special expanded remake sound like THAT? Who allows that to happen? (Daniel Radcliffe can at least sing and dance, though.)
man, i love you guys, i love actual good criticism, i mean it can look childish if i showed this clip to anyone, but i just really love your comments and your critiques
Once he pointed out that Belle is specifically blue, I watched the opening number for both versions back to back. He's right, Belle is the focus of the screen in the original since her cool blue sticks out against the reds and yellowygreens. In the new one, she literally fades into the background since its all so blue! She doesn't stand out in the crowd at all. Een with the colors aside, the original was always composed so your eyes followed the motion or framed Belle in the shot. The new one loses her in the crowd, or is up in your face so you can find her.
Ya know, I don't think Doug liked it very much...
Gavin Felan Naaaaaaaaw. What makes you think that?
Mat0s -316 not sure just a feeling
+Seantoxictoad I couldn't tell...
How did you get that? I thought the closing statement "I want to have sex with this movie" cemented his feelings on it.
Gavin Felan no shit
"Ready to make some enemies?"
If Doug ever seemed genuine then maybe his opinions would be able to offend.
Who want that low quality enemy.
DIY prom dress hahahaha
So true. I wanted a gorgeous impressive fairy tale dress. Like when Belle first comes out of the door in the 1991 version we are surprised with the beautiful dress. Emma's dress was soooo bad. It looked like something a girl in 2018 would wear to a picnic.
I was in a production of Beauty and the Beast for musical theater camp. The dress Belle wore there was way prettier than the one in the movie.
Is that true?
Most Belle cosplay dresses are better than the 2017 movie. And Watson was so obsessed with being a Strong Female Character that she refused corsets or stays and the fact that the 1700s was obsessed with cleavage and bared shoulders, especially in France, I’m sure Watson didn’t want her breasts so obvious (children’s movie, I guess, so it could be justified). But it looks more like a Chinese knock off of a Simplicity Halloween costume pattern
Should have been in gold and yellow brocades and satin and have some weight to it, Instead, it just looks cheap and light
Hannah McBride Oh my God who the hell cares if people wear blue it didn't make sense in their world anyway that's just nitpicking
Does it makes sense that no one where's blue but her Yes to make her stand out but No in a realistic sense so who cares
Laylanie The hypocrisy of you saying that while getting mad at my opinion. Maybe it is an unimportant detail, but it's one of the many details and charms about the original that this one failed to capture. It's a lifeless, hollow adaption.
Shut up it's not
Jamie, I am trying not to be rude here, but you don't know anything about filmmaking, do you?
Both Belle and Beast's mothers died? Were they both named Martha?
It's funny that a year later, a movie involves another plot line with both the leads mothers dying. Hollywood is out of ideas.
Splitter4416 WHY DID YOU SAY THAT NAME?!?!
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH LOVED IT.
Splitter4416 disney has a thing against mothers. cause Walt accidently got his mother killed
Hollywood must still think that giving birth is like being in a car crash.
YES.
Let me explain studios?! You watch Nostalgia Critic too?!
"Where is MY GAY MOMENT ?!"

CrazyBomb World such a wasted opportunity to have Lefou and Gaston shipped...

CrazyBomb World lol
CrazyBomb World They will wish for straight moments watching Steven Universe
Rob is just awesome
Rob: "Doug...Doug...Doug...just...sit down. No? You're going to finish your rap thing...? Ok..."
In this new one, the old woman just busts the door open and interrupts a party and just throws a rose at the prince.........umm if someone just invades my home in the middle of a gathering and goes "here's a rose"....I'd be like "wtf please leave. why did you invade my home?"....regardless of what she looked like.
That's basically how eating out in Europe works
it's sad when the animated Christmas video did it better.
@@annaiuga I agree.
Christine Snippets Great comment! Is it just me or does Emma have a wee bit of a giant ego?
Ashley Schnee yup I agree it also bothered me that their house was in the heart of the town instead of Belle and her dad living off on their own
Yeah, I got the impression that the film tried too hard to make her "different" when her character was already fine with how she was.
Another reason why the development between the beast and Belle worked was because she wasn’t afraid to put him in his place forcing him to think about his behavior while also giving him credit where credit is due such as when she thanked him for saving her life. Emma Watson’s Belle just whines all the time.
Emma Watsons Belle is what ruined the movie for me
I get frustrated when Belle is stereotyped as a nerdy smart person just because she likes books.
My friend said she fell asleep too.
Austin Fahrenbrook this movie is as enchanting a week old piece of dog shit with a Beauty and the Beast slicker on it
Anica Markovic good for u
But the chart 2 says...
clearly none of u r true fans of beauty and the beast because this movie is an exact replica of the original animated one with added songs and added scenes.
The original was 200% honest with its subject, a job of passionated peoples, indeed.
no chemistry between Belle & The Beast? I guess you could say they're...
🎶Barely even friends🎶
Amigo J YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!
Amigo J ha ha
With that little chemistry, I'd say that if somebody DID bend, it would be...
Unexpectedly.
+MustardPipeLibrary Onix-pectedly
You could say the same thing in the 1991 version. At least in THIS version, they expanded on building up that relationship between those 2.
Exactly!
I enjoyed the film but the libary scene was offensive, in the original is a big moment, if not THE MOMENT, in this one they turned it into a joke.
kitkatt24 To me the scene that pissed me off was the dance scene with Belle and the Beast. The 2017 doesn't even come close. Absolutely butchered it.
Yeah, she was certainly not right for Belle. She was only put in because she's famous.
I know. I felt that she got the lead just so the move could attract the Harry Potter crowd (teenagers and the adults).
She really wasn't. I don't exaggerate when I say that the second Emma came onto the screen, I thought "she's not Belle".
@@aaronyochim9779 Honestly, she CAN be a good actress. Don't believe me? Watch Perks of Being a Wallflower. Here, she was just a fish out of water.
I am keeping my Disney collection and preserving them to show my children. they will grow to appreciate the art of the originals
not gonna lie, i COMPLETELY forgot there was a remake of Pete's Dragon until Rob said something lol these remakes are so forgettable!!!
sailormonet19941 And if they don't then u failed
Brian Kelly exactly. if that happens i will have failed as not only a parent, but a person lol
I know what you mean. Parents need to do better with showing their kids classic movies. I feel depressed that most kids I know and some of my 20-something friends first watched the new rebooted Star Wars movies. It completely fucking spoils the original to watch the new ones first! Ugh. I'm not even that big of a Star Wars fan but that kills me that people think watching that first is a good idea, especially since TFA was just a badly done rehash of A New Hope.
sailormonet19941 this is why I show my sister the original then take her to the new.
Yet Emma Watson gets away with it b/c she played Hermione from the Harry Potter series.
Yeah she is clearly auto tuned when she is singing!!!
wiinterflowers Roberts, Collins or Seyfried would have been fine for the part. Rossum would have been PERFECT for it. But we got stuck with Watson.
Lol why is being an ugly girl a punishment?? 😂😂😂😂
Michael Ramon I would make him short, fat, and ugly
Ashley, because it would steal Gaston of everything he defines himself by, making him into what he derides most. Stripping him of his looks, masculinity, and strength and replaced with weak and feminine would destroy him.
Michael Ramon sessions
Michael Ramon
Indeed the teleportation kinda breaks the movie, it is the problem of giving too much power to the protagonists, so they looked really stupid for not exploiting that power all the time.
If you're a man and you don't like Emma Watson, the general reponse you get is, "But she's so hot. Dude, you HAVE to be gay."
If you're female, like myself, and you don't like Emma Watson---like myself, I hear "Yep. You're just jealous because you don't look like her and you haven't achieved as much as her."
Every time.
Both of those totally unreasonable.
I once got called gay for not fancying Kristen Stewart even though I'm straight. The guy who accused me of that was convinced that because he had a crush on Kristen Stewart any man who didn't was gay.
She looks like a man.
Faye Skelly She isn't even pretty! She bullied the costume designer in this movie and wound up looking like a little boy.
These days when it comes to criticism and a female you get the Ol' "you hate all women" or "your a self loather" excuse...
Next time on Old Vs. New: Beauty and the Beast vs the 2017
The original wins.
Tommy TwoShoes Thats hard to say. First had great moments so did the remake. Its hard to say but the original to me is better.
HuntSD Doesn't matter. Doug hates remake. So personal bias wins the day.
Tommy TwoShoes I haven't seen it but if they say this sucks then it kinda does because the Cinderella remake did better
Every Old Vs New ends in a tie-breaker, but given Doug's opinions on this film, I can't imagine him giving the remake enough points for that to happen. And there's no point in making an Old Vs New that doesn't have a tiebreaker.
not true, Willy Wonka vs Charlie ended with Willy Wonka winning
For some reason this put a really big smile on my face. Who else likes Rob's ranting better than Doug's?
+MNSportsJunkie101 Same.
(Y)
Same. I love it when they're both doing the "sibling rivalry" together, rather than just Doug talking in front of the camera alone. The way the play off each other is very entertaining. Doug's "solo" reviews are just boring.
*BEAUTY AND THE BEAST* Full = plus.google.com/+ThoeWilcentMovie/posts/5GnKU9RoKNv
I love these guys and even when I disagree with their opinions, they still make me laugh my ass off.
13:55 AMEN!!!! as someone who's studying to become an Opera Singer, I am SO GLAD that you guys are as mad as I am that they only use actors with "pretty faces" in musicals nowdays!
#SINGERSMATTERS
well u can’t have belle be ugly. but yeah we need good singers too
Sameeeeeeeeee
Saw it for myself yesterday, Emma Watson is... It's so bad. Can't believe THAT'S her ACTING. She says everything at the same volume. She always makes the weird troll face Doug talks about. She's only got two emotional expressions. And the chemistry thing is completely true. Can't believe this woman is still acting. She has other talents.
This movie deserves a Nostalgia Critic episode.
RingTeam new vs old episode?
light yagami No. A complete review. We all know which version is the best.
RingTeam I just thought it would be fun to watch
RingTeam yep
RingTeam how does that make sense? he's called the Nostalgia Critic this film is brand new.
I feel like a big problem with these Disney live action remakes is that live action just can't fully replicate hand drawn animation, no matter how well done it. There are just elements like the colors, the exaggerated expressions, the flow and movement, that just cannot translate no matter how much effort is put in.
I think that they could have still put emotion into it, tho. But I agree that live action can only do so much in that area.
The beast should have died from the gun, but magic healed him.
A live action remake of The Black Cauldron would make sense.
www.yahoo.com/movies/disney-will-stir-the-black-cauldron-again-181011796.html
Your wishes may be granted. They bought the movie rights to the entire book series.
If it's an R rated remake, I'd be all in!
End Credit Reviews I was absolutely terrified at the villain in that movie when I was a kid.
Fonzzz002 I think Disney should make a rated R movie. Can you imagine the hype that would get? Disney's very first official rated R film.
Buc Whovian It's a quick snowball fight for fun. You're over-analyzing it
Not much fun or her! I'm not really analyzing anything, it's just what I thought the moment I saw it.
LMFAOOOOO yes
I thought that was kind of a dick move by the beast.
Gosh it disturbs me to see you Critic, looking so down in the dumps...
+
Every guy here'd love to be you Critic. Even in sequel months.
There's no Critic on RUclips as honest as you, you're everyone's favorite guy!
Everyone's odd and inspired by you, and it's not...very hard...to see whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy!
Jessica Wood 🎵Noooo Oooone reviews like Critic, No one sings like Critic, No one gets upset at bad films like Critic!!🎵
I prefer the animated one
I liked the live action, but I too liked the animated more. The original was perfect, so I don't think that it's possible to make a better version. Altho I also agree that the live action is terrible. It's just a guilty pleasure of mine.
Micahdream I don't.
Same!!!
That's because you have taste.
Me too.
The wrong thumbnail was uploaded :/ Fixed now.
Channel Awesome cool but the Twister thumbnail was fitting
I figured it was because both movies SUCK. Eh?
It's cuz this movie blew hard
i would ask for an Old v. New, but I guess that'd be pointless since this "review" is basically a rant.
Oh yes, it 'blew' so hard that it's gotten over 700 million in the box office in two weeks and in some theatres there were standing ovations at the ending.
Yeah, sounds like the PINICAL of bad...
I apologize in advance if my sarcasm is rusty.
When they can't even remake the dress right, you know there is a problem.....
Apparently Watson gave a lot of input on the dress since she didn't want to have a corset on it and it be an unrealistic body image or something.
Haha, very funny.....
*sees the thumbnail* Yep. He hated it. I'm gonna LOVE this.
United_World's Finest There is a thing called opinion, you should check it out.It makes us different people with different thoughts and personalities.
Bat Croft22 Apology accepted.
Yeah that's what I thought too.
This remake had no life, character, humanity, or colors. I tried looking at it from an unbiased point of view when I went to go see it but all I wanted was to go home and watch the animated classic because of how boring and lifeless the live action was.
Loyda Perez That's exactly how I feel about this movie when I watched it,very disappointed with the remake.
Goodness...
Liam's Lenz Yep. Emma Watson's yellow dress left much to offer. Which makes sense since they informed me Watson designed it herself.
Loyda Perez good. More people hating on this sh#tty remake, the better so we can stop having these dumb remakes. I hate this movie.
I agree, I loved the beauty and the beast and the life action movie left me disappointed.
Alicia Martin We were saying awww because there was chemistry you wouldn't know it if you saw it for yourself
Shut you there's was romance cause it's the same situation like the first film so bugger off
Jamie Cobb You obviously have no idea what romance is, go watch the original again because a few things that look to be in the same place as the original doesnt ke it is exactly like the original when everything else is wrong.
Yes I do know what romance is and what exactly is wrong HUHUHUHUH
Emma Watson only got the role because of her Harry Potter fanbase, a franchise Disney envies. I knew it smelled like trouble when she posted on Facebook (after her casting was officially announced) that she would be taking singing lessons. :-/ I had hopes for Emmy Rossum, who looks uncannily like Belle and can actually sing.
I have such a crush on Emmy Rossum!
musicaltheatergeek79 she would have been a really good belle.
Yesssssss I though so too,she would have make a perfect Belle.
Emma was the first pick by the Disney chairman. So what's done, it's done.
musicaltheatergeek79 OMG YASS !! she is so pretty !!!
Daniel Radcliffe has proven himself as an actor. The Woman in Black, Victor Frankenstein and Imperium, sure non of them are greats but I now no longer instantly think Harry Potter when I hear his name
RoboticRob from what ive heard Rupert Grint's proven himself to have really good acting range
RoboticRob I really hated Victor Frankenstein but yeah Dan wasn't bad in that film.
RoboticRob Forgot Swiss Army Man. That was an......
interesting movie.
I also liked him in Kill Your Darlings and What If.
ZoraXire the Broadway version out classes this movie on so many levels.
ZoraXire what are you talking about exact same story? They got so much wrong!
So forgettable as well.
ZoraXire lol watching a high school musical of this is way better than the movie😂
Well, Lefou was interesting, but yeah, the rest you can get from somewhere else.
Besides, if you want to see a bad minion become a better person:
Gravity Falls
Meet the Robinsons
Emperor's New Groove
Star VS the Forces of Evil
Aladdin Series
why don't they remake their less popular/absolute failure animated movies?
I'd be all for a Brother Bear remake
jrpludacrous Why don't we even it out and remake Live-action Disney to Animated films
TREASURE FUCKING PLANET & ATLANTIS
Because not much people would see them. They tested the waters with Pete's Dragon and it did just ok in the box office.
THEY BETTER NOT DARE TOUCH TREASURE PLANET. I DONT NEED A CGI FILLED ROBOT AND ALIENS ROAMING AROUND, THE ORIGINAL WAS BEAUTIFUL
I wouldn't mind The Black Cauldron getting a remake.
Can I expect an Old vs. New of the two movies next year?
LOL. The animated version wins.
Giovanni Orellana There really is no point of that. I mean, no matter what side of the fence your on with the 2017 version, the 1991 classic is gonna win by a landslide.
Giovanni Orellana I don't want an old vs new I want a musical review
In this case Jungle Book deserves it better because it did get a lot more critical acclaim than Beauty and the Beast
I didn't think the live action Jungle Book was that bad. Though I'm not really a fan of the animated one.
movie biggest flaw; every performance was way too stiff, no movement whatsoever with their hands or bodies
Yeah, it was almost as bad as most other Disney films.
Agreed, except for La Fou and Gaston gave great performances. But Emma Watson was horrible; and with her so present in the film, it really dragged it down.
and there was barely any real emotion for belle
DrainedEyes At least someone is.
DrainedEyes
The movies messed up his character IMO, not really Grint's fault though.
"Harry Potter, you grew up with it. That's why you liked it." Wow, leaving no bridges unburnt here.
@David Timmer Because money...
Vivir new Disney ad: We've got to have....money. Cha-Ching!
This is the exact reaction I needed to see about this movie
Peter Jacobsen Than you are heartless
Jamie Cobb It did suck though....badly...
You can blame Emma Watson herself for that. She kept stepping in and telling the designers how to design the dress.
I loved the new version but I have to agree. The one let down I had with this movie was her dress. So underwhelming
Emma Watson's blue dress was fancier than the yellow ballgown -_-
it was directed by the guy who made Twilight Breaking Dawn Parts 1 AND 2. Which Doug HATES part 1. Were you guys REALLY surprised it was gonna bomb???
I actually didn't know that before I read your comment...
killer92173 spread the knowledge
Well that makes sense. I didn't know this either.
Ooooooooh. Well..... ****.
It is not like Transformers where they something new but got worse later.
Trisket It was a box office hit.
Here's what I'm afraid of: The Lion King remake.
don't forget the Snow White remake.
And a "Night on Bald Mountain" film. (Seriously, what the hell is that going to be about?!)
Vivir are you serious? they're doing that?
kirara2516
That's what I've heard.
Vivir wow, I dont know how they'll pull that off.
That sounds _amazing 😊. What class was it for?
agree with all of this EXCEPT NEITHER BELLE HAS STOCKHOLM SYNDROME because belle has no problem calling out the beast when he mistreats her, disobeying him, running away when he's out of line and returning only BC the mob started; not because she was brainwashed to. she only grows feelings when he starts treating her right.
Emmy Rossum would've rocked the house as Belle!
Marni Stone Ikr? Apparently she was one of their contenders for the part, but Disney wanted to exploit Harry Potter nostalgia and pander to SJWs with one fell swoop, so Watson it was. What a waste 😢
In the small comfort department, at least they didn't go with Kristen Stewart. Seriously. They were considering her. (shudders)
Yeah, they even considered Amanda Seyfried at one point too, apparently.
Finally! I'm not the only one who thinks that Emma Watson is not a good actress!
Crews Owen even my mother agreed with that and she LOVES the movie
I think she’s okay. Definitely not the best either. To be far to her though, her two most recent movies- This one and the circle- weren’t that good to begin with
She was pretty good in the perks of being a wallflower
I just hate Emma Watson overall so that's part of it
She was okay in the 2014 Noah film
I love the stage musical!
Marni Stone *puts hands over heart*
My Hunchback Musical people~
At least The Jungle Book did it's own thing. It deviated from the original Disney film when it could, doing different aspects that held together on its own, and the CGI animation is absolutely phenomenal, further making it stands on its own and worthy of just seeing it on the big screen.
This Beauty and the Beast just felt like it was just the original done in live action.
Trevpocalypse yep
And is there anything wrong with a remake that feels like something just done in live action?
Trevpocalypse After the travesty that was Maleficent, I think I prefer they don't deviate that much from the original.
You realize how many butthurt Disney fans bitched that Live Action The Jungle Book was too dark and too different? The Disney company most likely tried making this the same as the original since they honestly don't know what you ungrateful people want
"After the travesty that was Maleficent, I think I prefer they don't deviate that much from the original."
I will say with movies like The Jungle Book that were just okay, some deviation in the remake could do it good.
MisAnthro Pony if you like the movie, i respect your enjoyment of it, it's simply not a film for me.
John Loukis I respect all the effort made in this, it's simply the fact it's existence is completely pointless
A GriffinTV in my opinion live action versions of animated movies are POINTLESS why make a live action version of a animated movie when the animated version is just fine
light yagami Well said
Since no one else mentioned it, there is a good live action Beauty and the Beast from 1946 directed by Jean Cocteau.
Now, *that* is the original "Beauty and the Beast" :)
Polythene Pam yeah, that was pretty good. I saw it in my French class.
The other good Live Action Beauty And The Beast adaptations the George C Scott adaptation and the 1987 version which is also a musical
Elastico's Foot did you like it though?
I skipped the movie when it was in cinemas but I watched it yesterday and AMEN to all you said!
The Be Our Guest scene cemented it for me. How can something so exuberant fall so flat?!
I rewatched the original scene just now and the first few bars gave me goosebumps. This remake was tragic.
Eva Weiand While I thought the live-action remake was worse than the animated movie, I did actually think the Be Our Guest scene was more involving and looked better in this movie (although I guess the bad singing really did kill it).
How is Le Fou any more gay in this than he was in the original? He was just as foppish and camp in live action.
Remaking a GREAT film like this clearly shows Hollywood is running out of ideas.... -.-
The toys at target scare my kids. Mrs Potts reminds me of Cassandra, the stretched face in Doctor Who.
Seeing a fellow Whovian in the comments makes me happy. :) I love that episode! I know that this is off-topic to the video, but, first Doctor/episode and favorite Doctor/episodes?
First - Silence In The Library. Favorite - Don't Blink
...Oh holy shit, I can't unsee it. I actually almost forgot about Cassandra, she was an entertaining character.
......**looks up toys on Google images** J-J-J-J-JESUS
Moisturize me
I completely agree about Emma Watson. She's a mediocre actress at best, but people keep trying to make her an A-list star. I can only assume because they had a crush on Hermione growing up.
Or for us straight bookworm girls, they related to her.
I agree. People like the idea of Hermione but Emma Watson is pretty mediocre without that role.
Just like how people think Jennifer Lawrence is a "strong female character" because she played Katniss even though everything she does is basic cookie-cutter acting.
+Mallika Banerjee So would you say Jennifer Lawrence could of been a better Belle then emma. That could be possible.
+R Davis Link
Oh hell no!
Mallika Banerjee Well that's good then! 🖒But true emma was better off as Hermione instead in Harry potter as she was. An I get what your saying. An ok
Hey, in ten months it's January! And you know what that mean . . . DISNEY REMAKE MONTH!
oh my blessed god ahahahahahah ahhahaahhahahah
I thought the book didn't actually take them to those places. I can't really describe what I thought it was. I guess a hologram comes close. But the point is is wasn't real. Like that's the cruel part of the book, you can go anywhere but you can't actually be there. I guess I read that so wrong
LavenousForever didn't she bring something back?
@@johnnycake3915 Yeah, she did. She brought back some sort of glass rose. Or rose pin. Whatever it was.
I think @Bobsheux's review said it best as an asterial projection.
But as the comments said. The rose pin ruins the theory.
That would actually be _better._ I’m serious.
Okay but you know who would've been a WAY better pick for Belle? Phillipa Soo.
however, i feel that phillipa's face is a little bit too mature for belle, especially in this one. but her voice?!!!!! heck yeah!
Emmy Rossum.
Anyone else rewatch this just for Doug's little "This Movie Sucks" jingle?
Any rational person with ears would detest to listening to that shit
It was rather annoying, but since I agree with him, I find it permissible.
Michael Connell I found it funny XD
am i gonna get swamped with hate if i say that emma watson's performance reminds me of kristen stewart as bella? blank stares, open mouth, expressions of a slice of tofu, no chemistry with their love interests. they're like twins
anthares96 I agree with you, it was very bland compared to the original.
At least she smiles on camera and was able to carry scenes, whether they were between her and others or just her on her own.
anthares96 a slim slice of tofu 😚😚😚✨
Don't worry. Nostalgia Critic made that joke in one of his reviews/ editorials.
anthares96
To be fair i think Emma Watson smiled once in a movie.
Still she sucks
I don't feel quite as much unfettered hatred towards this film as you two, but in all honesty, the remake was really not that great. Felt too safe and didn't take any chances. At best, it's inoffensive and just reminds me of how much I love the original.
Since Disney is working to capitalize on the "Hamilton" craze, with Lin-Manuel writing songs for Moana, maybe they could have gotten Phillipa Soo play Belle.
Eh, at least it isn't Belle's Magical World.
MusicalKittens omg that monstrosity xD
omg you guys you speak so many of my feelings.
The original Beauty and the Beast actually won 2 Oscars, one for best score and one for best original song.
I don't like Emma as Belle due to one simple thing: her smug-ass smile.
As long as Tim Burton doesn't handle Dumbo...Pinocchio is dark enough to be up his alley though.
MrXemnas1992
There's already a live action Pinocchio from, oh I don't know, the 80s probably.
MrXemnas1992
Never mind, it was from 1996 and called The Adventures of Pinocchio
Deity1 Was that the Jonathan Taylor Thomas version (which I actually liked as a kid and I want Doug to review it) or one of the other handful of remakes that happened?
Was the Twister thumbnail intentional?
They're both disasters?
...jk, I haven't seen either of them :P
Magatsu Orpheus well they both suck......
The tornado movie twisted their minds too much! :P
I was wondering the same wtf
Yeah wtf is that all about
"You grew up with it (Harry Potter) that's why you like it." he says while wearing an X-men shirt.
Ian Plocki amen brother i agree critic really 😑😑😑😑
The X Men cartoon is really good, though.
Kate TerBerg I had to look up "vitriolic" on Google to figure out what you meant.
It's pretty nice to see new words like that on any given day.
Good way to look at things, Miss TerBerg :)
But when it starts to fail to make the bucks pretty much then the trend will eventually die down like the direct sequels did
Mmker97 Little Mermaid is next and I'm scared to see casting
Lin Manuel Miranda's doing the music though?? So the soundtrack might be good??? Please???????
oh. same thoughts, I forgot about that one lol. I think I just found too much comfort in the fact that the recent live action trailer that went viral wasn't Disney's lol
Jeeeeeeeeesus, that opening. Rob looked like he wanted to die and I do not blame him.
Athenafjd9 Maybe Gaston was more likeable than Belle because Luke Evans is a far better actor than Emma Watson? 😁
Yeah. If you're going to make a character gay actually do something with the character. Don't make them a token gay character who's there just to be a gay character just to be PC and avoid being called homophobic.
Athenafjd9 He was incredible annoying in the old film.
I think its really funny how they complain about the dress porn and the film lingering on it for the fans and whatnot, when EVERYONE I know who cared about the dress at all was... complaining about that ugly monstrosity, because it was an insult to the art of costume making. Just funny to see the different takes!
THANK YOU. Honestly nothing could top the original and my god, no one can sing
Watch the 2014 French version! It's a lot different, but it feels closer to the fairytale in my opinion, it's a lot more colourful but darker at the same time and gives a beautiful backstory of the characters.
does it have crazy old man
I hate to be that person, but Belle DID eat in the original.
Disney fans can be a lot like Nintendo fans when it comes to criticism.
*bowls
"drink from the bowels"
... eeeewwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
Feminist. You keep using this word. I do not think it means about you think it means.
AWseven11 The feminism stuff annoyed me, too. Belle in this movie was trying to be too revolutionary. Belle in the original just did her own thing and didn't care what anyone thought. She just was while this one was trying too hard.
Please do an Old vs. New of this! I'd love to hear a more in depth comparison between the two!
FavouriteScaryMovie I got a feeling this is going to be a review
You mean I can't describe this version of La Fou with "I PITY LA FOU"? awwww
Acrymon I got TRIGGERED when LaFou got crushed by the organ and Gaston just abandoned him. Man,we almost had a gay moment and Gaston сомрletely ruined it!
FriskyFries-
No there wouldn't, Gaston isn't gay plus he has such a big ego to care about others.
Doug is a better singer at the start than emma Watson
Here fricking here
Sarah Walter DISAGREED 14785489096533689008765432367%!
Sarah Walter I'm not surprised. Have you seen his Moulin Rouge review. It was gold. And it showed that Doug can sing.
He did some opera training. He doesn't have much technical ability, but he's got some ability, and a good voice. More than I can say for Watson.
man, i love you guys, i love actual good criticism, i mean it can look childish if i showed this clip to anyone, but i just really love your comments and your critiques
THANK you . Finally, two renowned critics agree with me about Emma Watson's acting.
