My favorite was always the Creature of the Black Lagoon. I dont know why, I just loved the creature design. I also have to admit that the Van Helsing film is still a big guilty pleasure movie for me because I grew up watching the Universal and Abbot and Costello films. Van Helsing just managed to hit right mix of the two for the pre-teen child I was.

Honestly, I'd take Van Helsing and The Mummy as part of the Dark Universe more than the Tom Cruise horror cosplay known as the new Mummy. The main reason is because both are really fun romps with interesting, iconic monsters - like they know they aren't winning any serious awards but damn it, they're gonna give us a fun ride anyway.

I've always been a little perplexed at the negative feeling for this film. Would I prefer a true gothic horror adaptation of these characters? Absolutely. Was that in any way the intention of this film? No.
People seem to forget that one of the reasons these particular monsters have proven to be so durably iconic, is how well they have been able to adapt to the ever changing tides of the pop culture. There may very well be hundreds of different interpretations of these characters, some good, some bad, but it has allowed them to stay fresh in the public consciousness while others have been forgotten.
I view Van Helsing as the closest we shall ever see to an adaptation of the "Comic Book" interpretation of the monsters. Both Marvel & DC have their own versions of the monsters filling a respective place in their universes & other comic companies (and cartoon series) have used the monsters repeatedly over the decades.
While the casting of Hugh Jackman makes it somewhat obvious, even without him, the character here is clearly designed more as a superhero than the traditional stalker of the supernatural.
The werewolves look like they are straight off the pages of a comic book or out of an animated series (like Batman TAS) and show a sense of power & frenzy other films are rarely able to.
While Mr. Hollinger makes an excellent point that having Van Helsing defeat Dracula in a more "angelic" fashion would make more sense, that would not exactly *fit* the world of the Universal Monsters, a world that is always about confronting the darkness of ones own nature. It is consistent that in order to defeat Dracula, a being wholly consumed by his monstrous nature, that Van Helsing has to tap into his own inner monster & release it in order to defeat him.
While the dichotomy of Good & Evil has always existed in the world of the Universal Monsters, being a horror universe wear tragedy looms over everything, it has always been... lopsided.
Anyway, I still Love this movie, Thank You for Reading.

Same. Van Hellsing is one of the best guilty pleasures of the 2000s IMO.
It also has a PS2 video game tie-in that is WAY better than it has any right to be because the developers had the good sense to just make a competent Devil May Cry rip-off with tons of personality. I personally love it and, as a big fan of the Universal Movie Monsters, it's actually a movie that is almost exactly how like how I would have made a film that ties most of the Universal monsters together in one universe. I would have only changed a few things, primarily that I think it was a bad idea to kill the love interest at the end of the movie. Why leave the audience with a negative emotion when the rest of the movie was campy and fun?

It is very well-loved here in Eastern Europe; probably because we don't have such reverence for old Universal/Hammer films (having barely seen any of them), and enjoy the film for what it is - a stunningly gorgeous and fun gothic action film. @Hitsuran but we need a certain medium to tell the quality of something, and I'd say objectively and unironically... this is not a bad movie. It's not good, but it doesn't try to be an actual good movie, they took stuff like some decent production crew and tried to make it as marketable as possible, and that ended up turning it into a much more silly movie. But it still can be enjoyed as both a real movie and a parody movie, much like a comic book movie.

I think that the reason the movie isn't more well regarded is because Ana died at the end. No one wants to watch a whole movie only for the love interest to die at the end in, and with the hero being the one who accidentally causes it. It's why I think the Amazing Spider-Man 2 didn't leave people satisfied. No movie goer wants to end a movie with that kind of emotion.

I didn't think the ending being tragic ruined any of the earlier parts that worked. But, I do think a significant amount of people probably weren't happy by the ending and as a reaction to that being where the movie ended, the critics gave rated it bad. I feel like a lot of the elements in Van Helsing were done as good or at times even better than the Mummy (VH had very exciting world-building and monster scenes); and to me the thing that stands out as being a factor in why the films are looked at differently is that people were happier at the end of the Mummy because it ended with a happy ending rather than going the more somber route.

Dracula never knew the monster was still alive, Anna takes Van Helsing down there to meet the monster without knowing a vampire had been listening at a window as she told him the story and the location they were going to and Dracula and his remaining brides are already taking the monster when Anna and Van Helsing show up.
Cue racing back upstairs and as Anna stands by the portal, Van Helsing completes it and BOOM! They go to the ice castle where the battle ensues.
Van Helsing and Dracula face off, Dracula uses super speed to snatch back his ring and then the full moon comes out and wouldn't you know it? Van Helsing is actually a werewolf!
Dracula's ring was modified by Carl years ago to prevent Van Helsings transformation and now Van Helsing has the power to kill Dracula.
Van Helsing kills Dracula, Carl throws out something "techno" to knock Van Helsing out for a moment and following Carl's instruction Anna grabs a piece of rope, threads the ring through it and drapes it over Van Helsings neck like a necklace - reverting him to human form.

I like the point you made about how Helsing says he wants to leave behind his violent past, but his actions say otherwise. In fact, in the opening scene, when he's talking to Mr. Hyde he actually says, "I'd rather just kill you and get it over with." Then he gets sad when he sees Dr. Jekyll's face just before he dies and gets mad at the Catholic Church for making him kill. I was left thinking, "Really, dude? Can you truly say you tried your hardest to solve this without violence? I think not."
