Ryan Hollinger Thank you for covering this movie! I love it so much! Maybe if you did a video about all of your most favorite messed up movies or movies that generally left you questioning everything something really deep and meaningful! I love you videos and your opinions!
I was once in Oklahoma and and friend told me "hey there is a lake that the tourists don't know, but we have to swim through a underground water cave" Then I remember this movie and just like that i said no.
Sea caves are actually even scarier than regular caves! If you die in a sea cave, they'll never be able to get your body out- people have died trying to retrieve the bodies of our sea cave explorers
It's an EXTREMELY bad idea to swim through underwater caves as a novice. You will very likely die trying. Even master divers get killed in underwater caves with the best equipment available, so a novice has virtually no chance.
o hell no lmao watch “47 meters down: uncaged” that’ll scare you out of underwater caves for sure ! I am already scared of open water so that movie horrified me

Yes, finally. Hands down one of the best horror movies of the last 20 years. A paranoia-enducing, bloody, claustrophobic masterpiece. Absolutely love this film.
I knowwww, I watched this movie when I was 13-14 yrs old and I remember being freaked out by it. And I love horror movies... usually find them entertaining or funny but this one actually got me cause of how real it could be.
Personally i never really cared for it. Reminded me too much of the catacombs movie about hell? Sorry the name escapes me and i thought some of the character plot points were very loose and odd. Though thats just me personally. My favourite is Strangers Prey at Night which i dont find much fault in save the ending so each to their own i suppose. I guess its also up to genre taste i personally prefer slashers. But i did adore a quiet place and one of my favourite creature flicks is the fog which is a semi slasher so again genre preference. But i loved the pratical effects, most of the characters, creatures, world building and that just thought this movie needed a few tweaks here and there with plot and character.
I agree! I am really surprised he didn't touch on it more. Apart from the elements the group are subjected to (from the creatures to the cave itself) that was the entire point of the story! She found out the truth and it didn't set her free... she was still stuck in the darkness, I thought that was the entire point. That there is no liberation from the harshness of reality.
Nissa Irving was it like years and years ago? Now that you mention that I do remember seeing a recommended video from him that was a review on some random movie like day after tomorrow or something like that... cool thanks for the info. I like how thorough he is when reviewing movies and relating them to certain topics. Since horror is my favorite genre i discovered his new stuff but i assume his old stuff would have the same flair.
@@wyattisrite5153 Whilst I don't think it's the best film I still kind of like that film, like you said it was loads of fun and it accurately represented Scotland.
This was definitely one of the first movies that made me realize that sometimes monsters and ghosts pale in comparison to the horrors of things like claustrophobia and being lost in a foreign environment. Great video, Ryan!
Kill Bill. One woman's journey to reunite with the friends that she thought had abandoned her when she got married. They laugh, they grow, and (no spoilers) maybe they even learn to love again.
This is literally my favourite horror film ever. The lead character is easily one of the most badass female protagonists ever (right up there with Ripley and Sarah Connor IMO). Also this is the only film that scared me so much that I had to change the channel to some kiddie's show during the first encounter with the cave-dwellers. Between this video and the one Dead Meat will be releasing on Friday, this is the perfect time to be a fan of this classic.
The “coming of age” part really resonated with me. I’ve had 3 close friends commit suicide just this year. Back in February I had a car accident that left me with head trauma, crippling anxiety and alcoholism. Life can hit you, well...like a fucking truck. Lately it feels like I’m climbing out of a cave of darkness. Don’t take life for granted ✌️
What do you guys think the monsters are? The missing link? Cavemen who never left the cave? Blind primates? I thought they were feral vampires at first.
Neil Marshal says on the making of the film special feature that they are cave men who never left the cave and evolved to their environment the cave paintings are supposed to hint at that.
They're cavemen who adapted to living in complete darkness rather than relying on fire and daylight. What we see in the film is the result of evolution over the generations. They appear inhuman.
One of the only horror films I've seen that's made me feel genuinely uncomfortable. This film has so many elements that play on people's fears. Disorientation, isolation, being lost, being hunted, claustrophobia, darkness, dwindling resources. Another element is that the further they descend the more intense all of the above become.
Seculeded, and gorgeous location. The caves are incredibly beautiful, great for any first timer and even seasoned professionals! The locals are just absolutely wholesome and quirky. 10/10 would abandon my friends again.
2/10 My friend got lost due to the poor directions, the guide was some kind of exotic naturalist who didnt speak English, and i wasnt invited to the local buffét.
Great video (as always). One element I took away from it (alongside, the subtext you've observed) was the resent that Shauna had towards her best friend for (perhaps) causing her family's death. It is implied (via a short glance as they are leaving) that, if the husband and Juno are not outright having an affair, that there is at least the beginnings of some kind of flirtation, and that this is the reason for her husband's distracted demeanor in the car and why he did not pay attention to the road, causing the accident. Then towards the end, as circumstances drive Shauna into a more primal state, her actions towards Juno act as a savage manifestation of both a "survival of the fittest" mindset, as well as venting her built-up resentment towards her for, in her eyes, taking away her family. That was my interpretation, anyway. Keep up the great work.
One of my favorites horror movies of all time, for sure. But I do think the "she was the one who did it" theory very plausible. It's not in a literal "fight club" sense, it's more allegorical than that, and the fact that she never got out of the cave I think it supports the symbolism that she never overcame her grief and "descent" into madness.
Absolutely love The Decent, I always thought it worked so well because its a damn scary film without the cave dwellers, they just add to it without feeling tacked on.
Right? like if you should this to someone completely uninitiated and just told them it was a suspenseful trapped in a cave drama, the creatures would come off a total surprise! :D
AzazelZaphorOmega Sorry for late reply, but legit that is what happened to a friend of mine. He had dual monitors, and was casually watching the movie on the side while doing something. He ended missing every detail and foreshadow for the monsters, and when he started getting invested and paid full attention to the movie, the scene where the monster was standing right behind a girl as the flashlight was shining on him just absolutely shook him.
I always found the ending sad, until i had a wife and kid. Now the ending is more understandable. The acceptance of the inevitable and the coping mechanism that was found.
I disagree. I thought it was boring and that all the characters were just as dumb and as just terrible as characters from a typical slasher flick. I did not care about any of them. When they died, it didn't matter except to push forward the plot. Speaking of which, the plot was predictable. I felt like I had wasted my time by the time the credits came on. I get that others enjoyed it more than I did. I just don't think it's nearly as great as people claim it is.
@@Chubbz969 I can definently side with you on those points. The plot was just a slasher film with a cave as the setting. Where it sets itself apart mostly is the premise of using darkness, claustrophobic conditions, and the unknown that can put even the most experienced cave explorer on edge. It's those three listed things that have universally been ingrained in the human psyche to either avoid, or fear for the sake of safety and security.
@@fieryblender7174 Ah, i see what you mean. Yeah, I saw those in the film but was ultimately left feeling letdown because it did not frighten me or make me uncomfortable.
All 3 Feast movies were insane, to be honest. Spoofs, overall, played seriously; that's what they felt like for me, anyway. I wouldn't mind more movies like that.
Pandorum is realy underrated, i didnt thought about it as Creature Horror but more as something like Event Horizon. But yeah Pandorum is a great Movie.
I dont know if I would call anything about the ending bitter sweet. It felt more like to me someone being trapped in their own mind. Seeing one thing one moment end living something else the next. There really wasnt any true piece there only the illusion of it. Which in the situation she was in by the end was going to come to a very sudden end
Peshawar Frots-I just pretend the sequel doesn't exist, pretty easy since here in the UK we don't get the terrible American ending for The Descent, we get the original ending were non of them make it out of the cave, which I've always considered the real ending & makes the film that much scarier.
I thought that I didn’t mind the sequel when I saw it, but I’ve never watched it again, yet I’ve watched the first one about 7 times. That shows it all really
It honestly wasn't as bad as everyone says it was. I suggest watching the sequel. The only reason everyone hates it is because it ruins the ending of the first one.
Something about your video style/themes suit the fall mood so much. All the eerie/horror stuff that you usually cover fit even better with the movies and weather that comes out this time of year. Appreciate all the effort you put in man. 👊
The Descent is so good! I love the tension and atmosphere it brings, and the underlying story and revelation in Sarah and Juno's relationship was fantastic payoff. I agree that the original ending with Sarah still in the cave was more poignant, even if it was very bittersweet. That said, I did enjoy the sequel for what it was, and I did like how it resolved Sarah and Juno's relationship, even if I too like to think of it more as a "what if" than a true sequel. And you have to give credit to that scene with the handcuffs and the pick axe. I was curled in the fetal position by the time that was over. I guess in the end The Descent was so good that I really did want the chance to go back, even if I knew it wasn't to the story's benefit as a whole. However, that does not extend to real life, as I will never, ever go in a cave after watching this. NEVER.
I watched this movie when I was a child on tv and let me tell you I was scarred! Nowadays I can't watch it anymore because I feel extremely claustrophobic lmfao
Pick up a dvd or blu ray copy of this movie and watch it again. This time watch it with the cast and director commentary running. It might help you out. The ladies are very funny. Plus the behind the scenes takes away a bit of the fright factor. The one character brought a prop home and scared her mom with it. 😂
@@mikaelafox6106 I have listened to the commentary and it is hilarious. The director was making fun of how often he had them say lines about crawl spaces in the cave with things like "It's so damp and tight" XD Or when the one little opening and the line lady says "Well, its a bit small isn't it?" In the commentary he says "That's what she says to all the guys" LMAO
The fact that you say this is one of the scariest horror films of the 21st century makes me feel very validated; this movie was the very first EVER horror movie I ever watched. I couldn't sleep for like two days after.
I discovered your channel last week and I can't stop watching your videos on this channel. I don't even go to the theatres to watch horror movies because of the excessive use of jump scares making me feel uncomfortable about something jumping out and loud noises happening every couple of minutes. I love to watch your videos breaking down the horror movies. And I really want to see the films you talked about and I really want to watch real horror masterpieces. Thank you so much for making these videos. I really love them!
The descent is one of my favorite movies of all time. I like the true ending better. I agree how she was able to find comfort in the memory of her daughter. I like how there is no false jump scares. ( Like a loud bang and find out it's your friend going ...why are you so scared? ) Most movies these days don't try to make something new and I find trama to be the scariest things to deal with.
So happy you touched on this! I remember this film being among my go to for sleepovers back when it came out on DVD. Bunch of thirteen year olds screaming their lungs out and reassuring eachother that if we were in that situation we wouldn't leave anyone behind. Feel like it deserves a rewatch now that i'm in my twenties. Love your takes dude!
_Dog Soldiers_ was one of my favorite films of all time. Managing to do two things that are very difficult, the first is making a legitimately good werewolf in a movie, and the second is getting action horror right. And now the person who made it has been directly involved in the new _Hellboy._ Oh, how the great have fallen.
7:30 this moment where Sarah is stuck was fantastic. You're unclear if she is stuck or having a panic attack. Apart from having genuine tension, this moments distress, and how it strikes a real emotional blow given what we knew about Sarah, is in how it seems as if she just can't go on anymore. Brief moment of nuance that I appreciated.
Oh man, so happy you covered this one; a solid horror movie, with one of the greatest jump scares. Marshall has plenty of future haunts in him, just give him a chance.
I love this movie. My favorite horror movie. I never thought about meaning of the movie and I really like your interpetation. Also your accent is adorable. The way you say cave is so cute!. I just saw your video about Charlie from It's always sunny and I saw that you uploded video about my favorite horror movie. What a funny coincidence!
This movie had me on edge from start to finish. It played so well on fear, right use for vision and hearing aids and the creatures were absolutely terrifying. This has become one of my new favorite horror movies
i have a special place in my heart for movies with marketing that don’t give away the plot, i think more recently Hereditary did that pretty well even under the thumb of big cinema, they didn’t really say what was happening to the family and some of the most horrifying stuff wasn’t even the supernatural part that they marketed
i watched this movie around when it came out on disc....i was 8. This movie was a paragon of my early childhood as it set a lot of known fears in me, as well as giving me a good idea of what horror can and should be. classic alll around, good to see my favorite movie going youtuber cover it finally.
Absolute shit in my opinion, scary because it can happen yes, but it's just a pile of shit with a lazy story, I think there may be something wrong in your head if u enjoy watching. See Serbian film too, you will love that if you like Eden Lake
Good review! I love the Descent - I’m always hoping Marshall will produce something of this quality again one day. Your comments about the “sequel” are spot on!
So glad you got to this one; easily one of my all-time favorite horror films. Unlike so many in the genre this film stayed firmly embedded in my memory and imagination for quite a long time after seeing it. I would also highly recommend watching the Making Of, and Extra's from the DVD/Bluray, it was not only astonishing, but very impressive that they were able to make such a convincing film with so few resources, recycling many sets and props for other totally different scenes, seamlessly. This is one of those films where lean necessity brought out the best creative impulses of the crew and director.
The emotional catch of the story just _punched_ me in the gut. Something tells me that the movie and your video do something very right if I'm sitting here, sniffling into my crochet just hearing the surface level of the dead family arc without even watching it.
I don't think it matters if they made a video about it at the same time. They have the same market basically and we all want to see different horror/film youtubers talk about the same thing and see they're different views on it. Or is it just me?
Please do “Oculus” It’s one of my favourite underrated horror movies of all time, on a side note, I LOVE the descent movies! Thanks for doing the first one! :)
I saw The Descent at a midnight screening the day of release all those years ago. I haven't seen it since but it remains one of my favourite horror film experiences of this half of the century. It was scary, claustrophobic, and most of all just deeply melancholic with the plot of the girls' friendships falling apart and the protagonist's grief. I'm afraid of watching it again just in case it doesn't hold up. The walk back to the car in that empty car park at night after that screen was a lonely and tense one and that's a feeling I strive for whenever I watch a new horror film.
I always respected the fact that they got the humanity horror element down (think Cube) and the actual “scary in the dark monsters” element down pat. And can we take a moment to appreciate how they managed to make the movie feel so dark (literally) and claustrophobic without being limiting or distracting! 👍
The Descent made me scared of the dark (and caves) for like 8 years but yet somehow I still ended up working as a tour guide in a cave for the past 3 years lol
dear Ryan, your video's are one of the best I have seen, I love how you breakdown these films and I also feel that you've put a lot of energy and work in them. I hope that you keep on making these amazing videos. I have difficulty finding the words to describe how much your videos in inspire me, but I'm happy to say that your video's have helped me a lot in finding what I want to do.
The descent is one of my favourite horror movies ever. I have never had that impression from that ending but I loved your take on it. As always, another excellent video. Btw, you made me wanna watch the cave now
This is one of my all time favorites in horror. It was one of the first I saw that was not only very brutal, but packed quite a bit of a n emotional punch as well.
I think the US movie had that ending, I prefer the darker version with Sarah still in the caves surrounded by the creatures. That's the only one I've seen.
Another nice video! One thing I missed was any mention of Tomb Raider (2013). That game has so many references to this film, I really would enjoy a comparison video.
I've been casually watching for a while now but just went on a binge of your videos this weekend, and hell yeah brother your analysis is always on point. You've got good taste bozo, keep up the good work my guy!
This movie SCARRED me back in the day! Such a brilliant movie and an equally brilliant video on it! You do nothing short of amazing work Ryan, love your stuff!
This is one of my favourite horror films and I love bringing that up because usually the horror films I put in my top five list get either praise or absolute hate, like Babadook or Hereditary, but somehow everyone I meet that loves horror seems to be able to agree with the brilliance of The Descent. Feels like a ray of sunshine in a dark cavern.
@@HeatherHolt the first half I find genuinely unsettling. The idea of someone hunting u down for seeing something u weren't supposed to is super terrifying to me

It'd be cool to see an analysis of 1986's Little Shop of Horrors and its unique blend of comedy, tragedy and horror. It's amazing because both the endings ( theatrical and director's cut) work great with the rest of the film, despite them being tonal opposites.

Feast 1 is overall great, the sequels are not that good, but like you said, very coocoo banana pants. ^^
All 3 Feast movies were insane, to be honest. Spoofs, overall, played seriously; that's what they felt like for me, anyway. I wouldn't mind more movies like that.
Pandorum is another good one.
Yes. To me it felt like she completed her DESCENT into madness, not being able to escape her traumas and forsaking reality.
I thought the sequel wasnt terrible, but i understand that the first movie by itself with the ending where she doesnt escape is the better one.
@@manabluerose The sequel was pure crap
SO glad you addressed the mess of the sequel, even if briefly..
but he missed the fact Juno fucked Sara's husband
I don't know, but I really liked the sequel.
Sequel was nothing like the first.
Ryan: cave
Subtitles: Kiev
😂😂😂😂
I thought he's American until I heard him say "cave". I'm shook.
@@lalakuma9 He's from northern Ireland, the typical accent there sounds quite American with only the slightest Irish inflections on some words.
MINI KIEV
I didn't even know there was a sequel to The Descent...For my own good, I'm gonna forget that was even mentioned.
It honestly wasn't as bad as everyone says it was. I suggest watching the sequel. The only reason everyone hates it is because it ruins the ending of the first one.
It’s okay, but it didn’t really need to be made. Like the comment below stated, in ruined the impact the first film’s ending.
i actually enjoyed the sequel
The descent getting love from Ryan foundflix and dead meat what a time to be alive
The Descent was one of the few horror films that I can watch again and again.
Thank you so much, Ryan, for censoring that compound fracture. I can take a lot of gore in movies, but I can't handle compound fractures.
9:30 and oh and THANK YOU
For giving props to "the cave"
I liked the creature, looks really good !
The fact that you say this is one of the scariest horror films of the 21st century makes me feel very validated; this movie was the very first EVER horror movie I ever watched. I couldn't sleep for like two days after.
"Deep dark undiscovered Kievs"
"Kiev dwelling monsters"
And so on :)
The Others might be one of the most underrated ghost movies I've ever seen. Maybe give that a look, if you're up for it? @Ryan Hollinger
I frickin love Dog Soldiers! I've watched it so many times
Alan Bane Imagine thinking that calling something cringy is a good argument.
This movie has a special place in my mind
The Descent is probably my favorite horror film. I’ve watched the original unrated cut countless times, and I enjoy it every time!
Hands down the scariest movie I’d ever seen.
What a funny coincidence!
this movie has been making a comeback recently! love it!
"Don't go searching for any undiscovered Kievs"
This movie had me on edge from start to finish. It played so well on fear, right use for vision and hearing aids and the creatures were absolutely terrifying. This has become one of my new favorite horror movies
I never really liked the grim ending but your explanation has made things a lot clearer now
i have a special place in my heart for movies with marketing that don’t give away the plot, i think more recently Hereditary did that pretty well even under the thumb of big cinema, they didn’t really say what was happening to the family and some of the most horrifying stuff wasn’t even the supernatural part that they marketed
Always loved this movie, now I want to watch it again
god i love this style of video !! love your videos man
Could you talk about The Autopsy of Jane Doe, please? The first half of that movie makes every cell in my body squirm. Love your videos!
i watched this movie around when it came out on disc....i was 8. This movie was a paragon of my early childhood as it set a lot of known fears in me, as well as giving me a good idea of what horror can and should be. classic alll around, good to see my favorite movie going youtuber cover it finally.
Eden Lake is a good film to assess. So scary because it can happen.
One of my favourite films
One of my favorite horror movies of all time. I got the DVD. That ending was crazy
Absolute shit in my opinion, scary because it can happen yes, but it's just a pile of shit with a lazy story, I think there may be something wrong in your head if u enjoy watching. See Serbian film too, you will love that if you like Eden Lake
The ending of Eden Lake really sticks it in and breaks it off; so brutal and unjust.
Great choice of video topic, great movie, and great video. Keep up the good work, Ryan. If you keep making them, I'll keep watching them.
Omg your Double Toasted Shirt!
Classic black tee with the color logo @dtmerch.com
My mum introduced me to this and I'll always thank her for it. Definitely one of the most fear inducing horror films I've seen
Thank you for covering this MOVIE
Good review! I love the Descent - I’m always hoping Marshall will produce something of this quality again one day. Your comments about the “sequel” are spot on!
"Until the day A24 gives him the green light to go back to his roots" lol love this
The Descent is by far one of the best horror movies ever created.
I didn't know a sequel existed. Now I'm depressed
I never clicked so fast I love all your videos!
The emotional catch of the story just _punched_ me in the gut.
Something tells me that the movie and your video do something very right if I'm sitting here, sniffling into my crochet just hearing the surface level of the dead family arc without even watching it.
Love your videos Ryan, hope you're able to keep up the great work.
It's awesome.
I love this movie. Need to go watch it again. Thanks for this reminder!
Is it me or he has a fixation with the city called "Kiev"? He mentions it all the time
I don’t know, does he call the cave “Kiev” on purpose? Or he just has an accent?
This movie was so well done to the cast, set design, creature design, writing, musical score, its just perfect build up too complete fear and madness.
Isn’t this going to be the next Kill Count? Coincidence? I think not!

Deadmeat said he was doing it
2 weeks ago foundflix reviewed it
And now Ryan did it
Planned? Or copied?
@@mr.pockets8523 They are all in cahoots with each other.

Mr. pockets ryan planned it in the beginning of september and james planned his kc in july but never announced it

I don't think it matters if they made a video about it at the same time. They have the same market basically and we all want to see different horror/film youtubers talk about the same thing and see they're different views on it. Or is it just me?
Please do “Oculus”
It’s one of my favourite underrated horror movies of all time, on a side note, I LOVE the descent movies! Thanks for doing the first one! :)
I loved Doomsday! It's so fun.
A top notch horror film. It's got the same vibe as Triangle.
I always respected the fact that they got the humanity horror element down (think Cube) and the actual “scary in the dark monsters” element down pat.
And can we take a moment to appreciate how they managed to make the movie feel so dark (literally) and claustrophobic without being limiting or distracting! 👍
My favorite film of Marshall's is The Descent
The Descent made me scared of the dark (and caves) for like 8 years but yet somehow I still ended up working as a tour guide in a cave for the past 3 years lol
Dude you have to do Jeepers Creepers 1, just ignore the director for the film
Seconding this. First film is fantastic.
"Just ignore the director..." Nope.
Christopher Carroll - Yea, I’m just hoping Ryan can enjoy the film without its makers souring the experience
Agreed. JC 1 is a great horror film from the 00's.
Christopher Carroll yes,
dear Ryan, your video's are one of the best I have seen, I love how you breakdown these films and I also feel that you've put a lot of energy and work in them. I hope that you keep on making these amazing videos. I have difficulty finding the words to describe how much your videos in inspire me, but I'm happy to say that your video's have helped me a lot in finding what I want to do.
I can't believe I'm here so early. I love your vids man, keep it up!
The descent is one of my favourite horror movies ever. I have never had that impression from that ending but I loved your take on it. As always, another excellent video. Btw, you made me wanna watch the cave now
Descent 2, I tried to watch it, I really regret that. I should not have done that, it was aggressively stupid.
This is one of my all time favorites in horror. It was one of the first I saw that was not only very brutal, but packed quite a bit of a n emotional punch as well.
Weren’t there countries that only saw the version of her escaping?
I think the US movie had that ending, I prefer the darker version with Sarah still in the caves surrounded by the creatures. That's the only one I've seen.
Another nice video! One thing I missed was any mention of Tomb Raider (2013). That game has so many references to this film, I really would enjoy a comparison video.
Never knew this movie was so deep (pun intended).
I wasn't prepared for that level of depth when I clicked on this video, but it reminded me why I love horror movies in the first place.
Can you look at the Evil Dead Remake👹💀👻
Think he already did
This is one of my favourite horror films and I love bringing that up because usually the horror films I put in my top five list get either praise or absolute hate, like Babadook or Hereditary, but somehow everyone I meet that loves horror seems to be able to agree with the brilliance of The Descent. Feels like a ray of sunshine in a dark cavern.
RYAN ! Jeepers Creepers is right up ur ally, start working clever boy 😂
@@rocketjet5813 Nah, the director may be a shitbag but the movie's good. I would be all for Ryan doing a video on it.
TCX that movie was so silly lol watchable but not scary at all
@@HeatherHolt the first half I find genuinely unsettling. The idea of someone hunting u down for seeing something u weren't supposed to is super terrifying to me
J.G Productions oh yeah before you find out he’s a monster yeah that part is unnerving for sure.
J.G Productions most of it actually isn’t to good, there’s actually a lot of continuity errors in it, if you rewatch you will see
"The worst thing that could happen to you has already happened" is one of those bittersweet pep talks, like yeah girl you can do it because you've survived worse already.

@@MistyWarden That totally explains it, thanks Misty :)
Was thinking the same thing!
It'd be cool to see an analysis of 1986's Little Shop of Horrors and its unique blend of comedy, tragedy and horror. It's amazing because both the endings ( theatrical and director's cut) work great with the rest of the film, despite them being tonal opposites.
