      Texas Battle is a staple in B action movies. He has been in several action films over the past 5 years with Bruce Willis who stars in them, and by stars in them I mean is in the movie for 15 mins but gets top billed. I heard Texas Battle and Bruce had some issues so they couldn't be on set together even when they were in the same scene and had to have their scenes filmed in ways where one was facing away from the camera and it was his stunt double and so they had to do twice the work when filming. They might be okay now because they were in a recent movie and were in the same scene. Anyways, Texas Battle is an awesome name. Sorry I got off topic.

    "modern", but as a teenager growing up in the early 2000s who developed a deep love for the slasher genre and the tropes therein, I was always on the lookout for more modern slasher movies, and I began to notice what felt like an underground slasher resurgence.
    Behind the Mask: the Rise of Leslie Vernon is one of my favorite movies period. It's a beautifully composed love letter to slashers and a rollercoaster of a film to watch. I insist on showing it to any and all friends who are even a little into horror.
    Hatchet is one I heavily associate with Behind the Mask because of its similar horror homage and proximity in both release and placement on my local video store shelf. I don't enjoy it as much, but I deeply appreciate what it does as a film and for the genre. Leading credence to what I said about there being an underground slasher resurgence, in the wild west days of early 2000s internet there was a segment that lasted a LONG time on Wikipedia insisting that these two films and the Wrong Turn franchise would have a three way crossover called Wrong Turn Behind the Hatchet. It likely would have been a mess, but one I'm sure horror fans would have eaten up, myself included.
    Jeepers Creepers (and its sequel) is a great monster flick masquerading as a slasher movie, and it does an amazing job with both genres.
    Laid to Rest came out in 2009, when my awareness of modern slashers was at an all-time high. It features an intriguing premise of a girl with amnesia on the run from a masked killer named Chromeskull. It's been a while since I've seen the film and its sequel, but I remember it ticking nearly every box I had as a horror fan at the time; it felt like a magical movie.
    Midnight Movie (2008) I had similar hopes for, and while they weren't as satisfied as they were with Laid to Rest, I still remember it fondly for an equally intriguing premise, cool villain, and some decent character work.
    Trick 'r Treat isn't expressly a slasher but has slasher elements, and a masked killer which I've always considered synonymous with slashers, so I count it among this pantheon.
    If anyone reads all that, kudos. The 2000s, while incredibly flawed as we started to see more bad remakes and teen dramas converted into horror, was also a special time to love slasher movies and all their trope-tastic goodness. It feels sometimes like the film industry has genuinely moved past these kinds of movies, and that's deeply upsetting.

    I'm going to have to back up the "tree jump". In the novel "First Blood", John Rambo jumps 10-20 feet from a cliff face into a pine forest. There's tons of branches in there, you'd have a decent chance to catch yourself, equal chance to poke your eyes out and hit every branch on the way down. But, there's a chance.

    Watching wrong turn 5 is like watching a defenseless girl get beat up by a bunch of bullies, men and women, knowing there's nothing you can do, and all you can do is watch her walk away from it all bloodied up and bruised, crying her eyes out. That's how watching wrong turn 5 feels like.

    Great review Ryan. Did you see the 2021 remake?
    I just reviewed it and compared it to the 2003 movie recently. It is "in name only" and aside from the characters taking a "Wrong Turn" it has NOTHING to do with the original 2003 movie.
    Even the characters are terrible. Especially the blond woman. Who's name I couldn't remember so I just called her Karen.
    It's a very fitting name for her character.

      See, that was my problem with #5 - it tried to be a cynical and depressing "torture porn" film, but it completely forgot how ridiculous the premise was: The inbreed cannibals sabotaging the entire town with ease (even though there's a festival going on) like criminal masterminds, while the main characters are doomed no matter what they do. It's such a mess of a movie.

  • @jwnj9716
    @jwnj9716 3 года назад +18

    For me, Wrong Turn 1 & 2 are the best ones. That's it. I stopped at 4, couldn't take it anymore. The remake? Eh. I'll give them credit for being completely different but I prefer the inbred cannibals more. The twist was so obvious from the moment those 2 masked guys couldn't communicate well with the teenagers. And you have that dumb moment where they didn't run sideways, I guess they watched Prometheus. But hey, I liked the end credits. I'm glad it wasn't a downer ending. So just watch the first 2 and then Hills Have Eyes remake.

    I’d say overall quality wise the first Wrong Turn is the best but I think 2 is such a wild ride. It’s the Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 of the franchise and I mean that in the BEST way. I think I’d rank the franchise as
    1. Wrong Turn
    2. Wrong Turn 2
    3. Wrong Turn 6
    4. Wrong Turn 4.
    5. Wrong Turn 5 and 3. They both tie for last because both are pretty much unwatchable. Some real low tier junk in my opinion.
    I haven’t seen the reboot yet so I can’t rank it in the list.

    For the love of god avoid Wrong Turn 7 cleverly branded as an actual Wrong Turn “reboot” to get people interested. One of the worst films I’ve watched in a long time. The writing is atrocious, and having a woke group of protagonists is not an excuse to churn out abysmal trash.

    • @Optics2024
      @Optics2024 3 года назад +1

      @ThatDumbBitch apart from the name everything about it was a “Wrong Turn”. I think the problem would have been had they called it The Foundation you’re essentially putting it up against films that have done that idea already, and done it better. Midsommar, The Wicker Man etc. So they probably figured it was close to the original just enough to market it as a reboot. And fair play, I myself probably would have had no interest in watching Wrong Turn 7 had they not done that. You can have a reboot that’s different to the original, that’s fine, but the premise has to essentially stay the same. Changing the inbred, mutant hillbillies to a kind of cult was kind of like making a Jaws reboot but there’s now a octopus instead of a shark. It’s stupid. If the name of the reboot film clearly doesn’t match the substance of the original, you’ve probably been conned by clever marketing.
