The only thing that annoys me is miming parts that are on track. I don't mind if sweeteners (strings, synths ect.) are on tracks, if the band doesn't have enough members to play that live.

I'm with ya 100%!! We're of the same era and I think people like us think differently than today's up and comers. The reason I say that is because the younger musicians that I talk to seem to not care about the backing tracks and the sound guys definitely don't give a damn because it makes their job easier too! We're losing so much of the "human" aspect of music that it's becoming scary!!!!

Talking about avoiding distasters with backing tracks, it can truly be the opposite when the computer fails, and nobody knows what to do without the click..

I was on tour opening for bigger acts in the early 00s and every place we played asked for our DAT or laptop. As it turns out we were the only band that didn't have one. We never even considered backing tracks. We were a rock band. Our pholisophy was: if we can't play it live we didn't record it.
One of the bands we toured with had a monitor sound guy who we become friends with. He let me listen to their live backing tracks one time during thier show and it was basically the album with boosted lead and backing vocals, percussion and electronic stuff. One night their laptop died and they were gonna cancel the show but I talked them into playing. I was like "you're a pro, touring band on MTV you dont need all that shit anyway. go out there and rock your shit" They got all hyped and then just sounded like hot garbage. Vocals were tore up guitars were thin drums were sloppy. I was embarrassed for them.

I always found it kind of amusing and ironic that one of the most spontaneous drummer ever was also the first to play along to backing tracks and sequencer/synthesizer. I am of course talking about Keith Moon who began playing live with a pre programmed synthesizer in 1971 and by 1973, Keith played along to backing sound effects and sequencers onstage during the Quadrophenia tour.

Well I do agree with you in part! I have to admit I’ve played a thousand live shows or more with backing tracks but… it was always live musicians playing to a click and tracks were, keys, percussion, horns etc. because you don’t hVe to pay those tracks any money. At the end of the night the 4 musicians still got paid. You sounded good and full people were happy with the band and band made more scratch!! But… musicians faking the playing of the instrument I don’t like that all. Many bands do this now! I would never pay to see any band fake there way through a show. Live music with accompaniment tracks I get it I’ve done it a thousand times. Don’t like lip syncing either that’s a no no as well for me.. great rant my friend loved it!!! ❤

Let's talk about large venues -- is it worth it to spend $100+ to stand 100 yards from a band and have to watch the them on a projection screen? (And spend hours in line getting in and out of the venue, not to mention having to pay $18 for a plastic cup of Bud Lite.) I personally won't do it anymore. I'd rather see a mediocre bar band. 🤔

I hadn't heard about extreme metal drummers playing with fake double kick, "for shame!" if that's true, and I guess it probably is.
On the subject of practicing, how much do you practice? And how much did you practice when you were starting out? I have my habit of at least an hour 6 days a week which seems to work well enough, but then on top of that I'd be doing a fair bit of mental practice as well, thinking about different beats and what not.

Even worse is when the band on stage isn't even the band actually playing the music I did a few dates of the nsync no strings attached tour. They had a full backline setup on stage and another set up underneath the stage the actual band played the music under the stage while younger people mimicked it on stage because the actual band didn't fit the look they were after .

Can we get one of these calling out Promark and Meinl sponsoring Raja Meissner the ig drummer who "plays" 60 second covers with only the original audio playing?

The worst use of BT that I’ve seen was one particular metal band that played even though their lead guitarist was sick. His parts, including solos, were all played on the backing track while the other two (yes, three total guitarists) were playing rhythm.

@@JunkdrummerTV I don’t want to name the band because they’re good guys and honestly I’ve seen them before and they put on a great (fully live) show. It was definitely disappointing though…they should have just canceled the show.

I think Nightwish is a good example of a band that uses backing stuff appropriately because they are a symphonic metal band but the orchestral stuff is mixed so well with the live band . I think Nightwish knows how tonuse this stuff properly. They not using to cover ther ass or give a cheap performance the ocrchestral mix and the themes sounds are cued i think by the keyboardist.
