- Welcome back to a mini-series... The Pursuit Of A 10! This series is all about seeking out & catching trophy-class Bluegill. As a multispecies angler, I have grown to love Bluegill not only as a neat part of the ecosystem, but also as a truly prominent sportfish. What I have found, however, is that Bluegill tend to earn 1 of 2 reputations - they can be either a "beginner fish" or a "fill the freezer fish". I definitely believe they are far greater than those two stereotypes. I believe they are a true sportfish and you know what else is great about them? They are pretty much everywhere!
My goal was simple with this mini-series... Build confidence in my big bluegill hunting skills & catch a 10" gill along the way. Michigan considers a 10" Bluegill a "Master Angler" Fish - essentially implying that it is a trophy in our waters. I definitely feel I can accomplish this goal throughout the course of this series, however time will tell. Ultimately, I just want to continue to flex my multispecies muscles and learn more about targeting and patterning large bluegill. Throughout this series, I will obviously be fishing a lot but I also intend to include some informative biology information so we can all learn to be better conservationists and help create better big bluegill fisheries for years to come.
In this FINAL EPISODE, I got out with my good friend @bassinbill96 to chase down some spawning Bluegill. It was hands-down the best Bluegill trip of my entire life. We probably boated over 100 fish and the average size had to be pushing 9 inches. This body of water is a perfect example of why proper Bluegill management is important... If we want big Bluegill, it is a possibility... We just need to treat out bodies of water the right way to get that accomplished.
Make sure to watch until the very end because you don't want to miss my last catch. That's right... We have finished the series on a true trophy! 10.5" of Pure Michigan beauty right there. It was such a wild ride to catch that fish because we had boated so many big ones up until that point, I had pretty much given up hope. It goes to show that you've just got to keep grinding because it paid off. Shout out to the Mule Fishing Donkey Tail Jr (Pasture Fire) on a 1/64oz Mule Jig (Fire Red) which is ultimately the rig that got it done!

Small fish is underrated. Theres a pond in my area where everyone else is targeting larger species, and me with my ultralight targeting smaller fish, literary with every fish they caught, I got ten. That ultralight rod bend, that drag sound is so much fun!

We hammered the sunnies in MN on Sunday. Green Pumpkin Black Donkey Tail Jrs on ultralight rigs. Lots of 8+ and a few 9s. And I’m telling the truth when I say we saw over a dozen boats and no one else could catch them. Was actually amazing being the only boat catching them. We put on a show. My fishing buddies are officially Donkey Tail believers.

Outstanding buddy! You deserve it. This is exactly how we feel when we are on the creek and we are reeling in 9+ inch bluegill. With the right ultralight gear and the right lure it makes for a terrific day on the water. The catch rate demands a lure like the donkeytail jr and the mule jig head because you spend more time fishing and less time fiddling with the lure. You’ll be back to this lake, just for the sheer volume of fish in the trophy category!

I have a series going on crappie called "Slab Stories" which you can see on my channel. I don't have a specific size goal on that series but maybe I will start one of those! A 14" slab is feasible but would certainly take some time. Might just go for it!

I used to watch your videos and not really hate on the videos because I watched all of them but didn’t see the allure of specially fishing for bluegills but here recently I’ve had to come to terms that here in Tennessee we don’t have the best bass fishing but we have a solid amount of gills and found my self having just a ton of fun catching slabs on light tackle I can say I now see what all hype is about I’m gonna start chasing a 10”er
I hope you catch the bug of chasing big gills. You’ll find that it can be equally rewarding as bass

I am so thrilled you finally got your ten inch Bluegill. This series I fell has raised Bluegill fishing to a new level. Catching small ones is easy, but catching the large 10 in and above is so difficult. You also did it with 2 pound test line. Great job. Enjoy the victory.

I just caught my first 10-in bluegill today. It was a monster bluegill and I caught it while I was out fishing with my nephews in Florida 😂. Small little lake and I was in one of the channels where the water was not very deep so I wasn't expecting to catch a big fish

You and Bill were slaying the bull bluegill. I had my PB last year fishing for smaller largemouth bass with a 6' light action rod and 6# line. The bass were killing the Beetle Spin and had an 11 inch gill slam it. What a gas! My son is the jumbo pumpkinseed guy when we go to northern WI in the early fall. Great quest and you did it. I watched this episode on the edge of my seat with great anticipation of each and every fish and was sooo excited to see you capture the fish you've been looking for! Congrats to you and hats off to your friend who put you on that great fishery. I have been preaching the "bluegill gospel" for years to release the bulk of the largest specimens, especially the males, in many regional and national publications but there are still those who will keep only, and I mean ONLY, the largest bluegills they catch thinking they recruits will always fill in and get to that magic 9-10 inch size and greater. Well, it just doesn't work that way. Thanks for releasing those great fish and I wish you continued success with both the lures and the channel! Blessings!
Thank you Jim! We just gotta keep doing our part and spreading that information as best we can. Ultimately, people have a right to harvest whatever legal fish they choose, but if we all try to do so the smartest way, we can all catch bigger fish for years to come. Keep crushing them brother!

I finally experimented with a Spybait last year, and got skunked on Bass but caught a SLONCH 9+ on it...a 4" bait!

I love this video. Just a few days ago, I caught a pure pumpkinseed at 10 inches and 1 lb. After seeing this, I may get it mounted. Biggest pumpkinseed I've ever seen or caught. These bluegills were so nice.

Haha yeah they definitely are harder post spawn. That said, you should be able to find them on grass edges or in shady locations with good cover.
Bluegill start out as kids fishing but later in life I think we all go back to the fun basics. AND they are good eats! 😁

There it is, congratulations my fellow angler friend, awesome series, and those 9 and 10 inchers you kept on catching with Bill were awesome, including that long perch. I sure hope this is the starting point of many new series, I'll love to see one on those underrated rock bass or pumpkins.
I definitely intend to do more series just like this one in the future. Probably a Pike series, River Smallmouth, and some more sunfish focused content as well. Stay tuned!
This year I fished for redfish and sea trout in Florida, bonefish and permit in Belize but my favorite fishing trip has been catching bluegills at my home lake back in Illinois.

I got a Gill the other night just under 10", but so thick & I didn't know WHAT I had on for awhile she fought so hard. They're an amazing Fish... & they're EVERYWHERE! Enjoy your Vids.
