The 2023 Ballon d’Or is up for grabs this week, with Lionel Messi the firm favourite to pick up his 8th trophy from the France Football Magazine following his World Cup 2022 victory.
Erling Haaland is also in the running after a superb debut season with Manchester City, winning the treble while scoring a staggering 52 goals across all competitions.
But JJ Bull believes someone else should be in the running. Just who is that player, and how deep does the conspiracy go against them never having won it?

I think KDB makes it look too easy, and that's why he doesn't get as much credit as he should. He plays simply, but brilliantly. Thomas Muller is another player that gets underrated like this. I think they both have the vision to choose the simplest option that creates the most, so the result is super effective but not as dazzling.

Mohamed salah is another player that strikes the mind. He is 2nd in both the leaderboard JJ showed, and also scores goals. KDB should be in contention for the Ballon d’Or title ! Infact he should win it! Absolutely instrumental for City winning the treble, equalised against Real in the semis and 3 assists in the overall two legs, 2 goals and 1 assist in the title decider against Arsenal, 2 assists in the FA Cup Final against Utd and I’m bang on sure if he wasn’t injured he would’ve been the assister for that Rodri goal. I'd argue that last Rodri's last season was phenomenal too. He won it all, with City and Spain (Nations League) and he was incredible every match, leading the team along with Kevin. He was outstanding, and more crucial to the results than Halaand himself, I'd say (Rodri scored the winning goal against Inter whereas Halaand couldn't score neither in the semis or final missing many chances). I hate that some players are overlooked just bc they aren't too hyped by the media. Halaand and Mbapee have been hyped up for a couple of years now, when there are some players that are better and more influencial in the games than them, but sadly will never get the awards.

Ballon d'Or is a popularity contest, that is all. Both Ronaldo and Messi have won some undeservedly, in terms of performances, but popularity took over and they won. Hard to compete with that nowadays. Unless, it is an actual football competition, where you need to beat your opponents to win, on a football field, and your popularity means nothing.

Popularity contest? Which player in Europe wouldn't be at least the 3rd for ballon d'or after recording 51 goals and 26 assists in a year? Which player wouldn't get nominated after having 35 goals and 30 assists? Only Lionel. If this award was fair and was really designed for the best player. Messi would already get it at least 10 times. He is the player that get punished for collective failure. For multiple occasions, he was by miles the best player but got punished because collective collapse of his teams (club and country).

What's missing from KDB is that he doesn't score goals often. I am not saying he needs to score like Haaland, but he should be atleast scoring a goal every 2 or 3 games for him to stay relevant and a couple of big goals in big tournaments really helps! As you said the problem is he's consistently good, that's why we overlook him. So in order to break that, he needs to be outstanding now and then for him to standout. Another reason he needs to stay fit and play all the games. Whenever we think of City losing the UCL final to chelsea we get the picture of KDB getting injured and crying. That image needs to change!

Real Madrid away UCL semi-final was an absolutely massive goal and, aside from Rodri's obviously, maybe the most important in City's UCL charge. PSG in his first season at City to take them to their first semi. PSG in 2021 to go to the UCL final. Put Brazil away in 2018 with a goal in the quarters. 2 against Arsenal to end their title charge last year. 2 absolutely cracking goals against Spurs and Chelsea from distance. He scores a goal in about every 4 games in his career. In 2022 he had 19 in 45. This is all ignoring he's the best passer in world football IMO and averages an assist every other game as well. Staying fit, okay, I think that's a fair argument.

Pay attention to JJ or commentators language. “He was so terrible, pathetic (sarcasm)” but for Beckenbauer, due to the fact he’s a player of the past, what words are used is “beautiful player btw.”
This sarcasm won’t be picked up by many fans, if you don’t think so, you’ve forgotten how sports fans in general interpret such things. Many won’t get the sarcasm, which is interesting.

Because the ballon d'or isn't primarily for player with the most goals and assists although Messi had the 2nd highest G/A in Europe last seasaon, in fact the award is for the best player who shined the most during big tournaments, it always has been, remember R9 winning it in 2002 while barely even playing football? He won it because of the WC and people didn't flinch when he was awarded, it was natural, if it was based on G/A Messi would've had 10 already, if it was based on who is the best player purely from an eye test perspective (the way it was before stats became the most important thing) Messi would've had more than 10, the only way you can argue for Haalnd are goals and consistency but everything else points to Messi.@@ariongovender6049

The truth is Messi really shouldn't win the Ballon d'Or, but he will since it's basically just a popularity contest nowadays. Erling Haaland outshone him throughout the entire season. He broke the record for most goals scored in a Premier League season. He won the treble. What more does he have to do? He easily deserves it. Messi did basically nothing outside of the World Cup. Winning Ligue 1 with PSG is like winning the Bundesliga with Bayern. Nowehere near a treble.

Honestly, the ballon dor has no specific criteria. There should be one. The fact that attackers are more likely to win it is criminal to me. I've never heard of a full back winning the award. The players who are capable of creation and defending the wide areas literally have never won. I think they should just give an award for each position on the pitch. GK, CB, Fullbacks, CDM, CM, AM, CF, Wingers.

Haaland should win the ballon d`or.
In 2010 Messi had a year similar to Haaland`s season and Messi won the award.
meanwhile in 2010 both Xavi and Iniesta both won the world cup, but niether of them won the world cup. Even as a Messi fan, i think it appears kind of suspect that Messi seems to just get awards due to being Messi. Messi is the greatest player of all time so his career and legacy doesn`t need one more ballon d`or.

Bias is the reason why certain players don’t get the recognition they should. For example you ruled out Halaand because he supposedly only scores goals. Let’s assume that’s true, why is it a bad thing to be good at the main thing that wins football matches? It shows a bias. You spent an entire video talking about how great Kevin de Bruyne is and then in the end say you would have voted for Messi anyway because he’s the best ever and this will probably be his last chance to win another ballon d’or. No doubt many of the journalists who vote in this thing have a similar bias.
