So the Ballon d'Or is what I thought it is.
I hear you & we probably agree. It’s a European award, decided on by European journalists. Football is a team sport though, so supporters don’t really care about it. They’d argue & almost always disagree over who’s the best players anyway.
Yeah, nice video but horrible clickbait title

Messi and Ronaldo destroyed this award. They were so above the rest that it became a competition between who could win the most that year, and unfortunately that has become one of the main criteria for the award even after their dominance has ended. Jorginho being the third best player in the world for being part of two teams who won their tournaments even when he was not the most important player in neither of those teams has killed the idea of this award entirely. It has become another team trophy, I do not think your have to be in the Champions League winning team to be the best player in the world at the time, and it seems to have become a requisite when there is no international tournament going on.
It’s just heavily bias
Messi and Ronaldo didn’t destroy the award,it was France football
I know stats don't mean everything but to be fair during the Euros Jorginho covered the most ground of any player, joint most recoveries, second most passes of any player, won most fouls, made most interceptions

It’s just a popularity contest; the more your team wins, the more you are in the spotlight, the more people talk about it. Simple as that.
Then there’s media narratives and bias from journalist voters.

People who don't win it do that
We'd be arguing about the rules then.
How would you even create rules for this?
The last thing it needs is to become even bigger. On the contrary, it needs to become less popular because it distorts public perception so much and so badly
After they refused to give Lewandowski's 2020 Ballon D'Or, and made a fake award for him the year after, they revealed their true colours. The award should mean nothing now.

Yes.
Maybe it doesn't matter a lot of historical great footballers never won it does that take away from their legacy? I don't think so
The real problem is WE pay too much attention to it. If we ignored it a bit more it would lose a lot of influence, but football fans end up making it what it is.
Messi fans I believe
TL;DR: It was pure European player of the year till 1995. Then it evolved into becoming European Leagues' player of the year.
Until 2007, now it is global, as they stated in the video, which is why Neymar was close to winning it while still at Santos
@@1998Cebola Listen there are so many good players around the world but they don't get enough exposure. And most of the leagues are weak so any average player from average PL, Laliga, Serie-A, Bundesliga, Ligue 1, Eredivisie, Liga nos players will shine in those leagues. So it's a bit complex to engage all the leagues to choose the winner
@@BrewBun Let's be real, there isn't any player outside of the European leagues that has a shot to make the top 30 list let alone win the whole thing
You forgot to mention that France Football went back and revised the winners with South American inclusion and said that Pele would have won 7 times, Maradona in 1986 and 1990, Garrincha in 1962, Kempes in 1978 and Romario in 1994.
I just wish this was still an individual award, rather than given to the player with the most major trophies that year.
The real problem is the lack of consistency. One year they give it to most mediatic guy who won the important tournament, next year to the most mediatic guy who had most stats in just a single or two categories like goals/assists (which by default leaves out any players that arent forwards) even if he wasnt in a team that won anything.
Many people opinions about who should have won it arent better to be honest (most of the time, worse) like giving it to the guy who scored the winning goal in a WC even if that guy was injuried most of that year and didnt play most of it, or wasnt even a starter in many games for his clubs (yes, I am talking about Iniesta) . It is a prize for the whole year performance.
Ineista did not deserve it 2010 that was Weisley Sneider but Ineista deserved it in 2009.
True, i always found it funny how people claims they no longer gives a damn about ballon dor (just because their favourite player didn't win) only to talk about it religiously again the next year
Facts! I never thought iniesta deserved it in 2010. I thought sniejder did based on trophies. But in terms of pure footballing no one in the world played better than Leo Messi that year so I had no problem with him winning it.
That is because of the voting system, in ballon d'or it's journalists from 190 countries who vote, and since most of them didn't play football, some fail to see the difference. FIFA Best Player is better as besides journalists in the voting system enter also team captains, managers and fans, so you have 2 categories ( captains and managers) who are more involved and have more knowledge - that's why for example Zidane won only once ballon d'or but won 3 times Fifa best player :) ballon d'or is wrong by design :)
@@tonyneculai4576that sounds even worst
Alfredo Di Stefano was technically the first South American to win it. He was Argentinian that later nationalized as Spanish when he was playing in Real Madrid in the 50s.
I would like see a the ballon d’Or in a different form. First GK then defender, midfielder, attacker. So you get 4 players from each position then you give it to the best player
Yes this is good method
The ballon d'or is only for midfield and attaking players now with yashin for keepers and a new maldini award suggested
That might be a good idea but then again it could happen that the second best player of a position is better than the first one of a different position. that wouldn’t be fair neither
I'm not a Real fan, but based on what you're saying Sergio Ramos could have won it, even with the Red cards lol. Good idea thiugh
Yashin award for gk's, golden shield for defenders, golden brain for midfielders, and golden boot for strikers, and ballon d'or is one who tops at the most stats compared to any player.
No award in a group sport can be accurately given to the best performer. As a mathematician, determining the best player in a season is very difficult if not impossible. We have to dive down to subjectivity rather than objectivity in this case.
There are many different and overlapping roles in football. Goals, saves and interceptions are not the only stats which determine the performance of a player. For a forward for eg. we need to consider goals, assists, key passes, through balls, dribbles, duels won etc. Apart from these quantitative stats, many non quantifiable stats exist as well. For eg. impact of player position on opposition play, vision, irregularities in opposition defence caused by player etc. Now even if we somehow quantify these stats, assigning them weightages/importance in order to get a composite score for comparing players becomes a subjective matter. Apart from this, many forwards also contribute in defence, we need to track that as well. A similar approach can be followed for defenders and midfielders.
In the end, it will boil down to subjectivity. Goals, assists, saves etc cannot be used as a yardstick to compare players in different and even similar roles to award them a trophy.
The easiest and effective approach therefore is a subjective one based on a large sample size in order to predict the best performing player. The Balon D Or does that and therefore is a good measure of a player’s performance in a given season.
Good analysis. But you yourself have shown that there are objective criteria. It's a combination of subjective and objective but I do think the objective wins out.
@elizabethcsicsery-ronay1633 You don't understand it. The importance of objective criteria is subjective itself. So even if you use objective criteria, it becomes subjective in itself. Goals, assists, saves etc. cannot be used as a yardstick to compare players in different and even similar roles. It can be done only if one player outscores the other in more than 70-80% of the stats under consideration. This will ensure that whatever level of importance is given to a parameter, only one player will stand out in all the permutation and combination used for assigning importance to parameters.
For example, Zidane and Maradonna don't have an outrageous amount of goals and assists which players have these days. If we use just goal contributions, then Lewandowski will eclipse Maradona by a mile. In terms of player quality and importance, this is not true though. Similarly if we just go by goal ratio which is the way better parameter than just goals, Ronaldo and Messi will not even be in the top 10 list of attacking players. This is not true though. Both of these are the finest players of this century until now.
The first South American to win the Ballon d'Or was Di Stefano (Argentinean) in 1956. The second one was Sivori, Argentinean too, in 1961
they won because they naturalized
@@iuri9161 That's true, but they were Argentinian and should be recognized as the first South Americans to win it.
I personally hate the Ballon D’or craze/obsession we’ve seen over the past few years.
I think it’s pushing us towards an even more Americanised version of the sport where people support players and not teams. I watched a video (not sure if it was on this channel) on the evolution of celebrations and it showed how celebrations used to be a team thing and now they’re individual.
American society is highly individualistic, that’s the whole purpose of the American dream. Players careers now seem to be less driven towards team/communal success and instead it’s individual success, ask a young player their dream now and I think most say win a ballon d’or over winning the league, champions league etc.
I think we’re losing sight of football being a team game.
I wholeheartedly agree, this is the perfect summary of what's wrong with current football superstars
I definitely agree on a a holistic level with this, but on a personal level I’ve always been more drawn to watching individuals than supporting a team. Not having an association with a team has always felt to me that I can be more objective around who (individuals and teams) are doing well.
In the context of this award, I definitely agree with the criticism outlined
@@AH-mp1fh I’m the opposite end of the spectrum, I support a team outside a top 5 league so I get to watch from an objective view point, but our best players who make you feel something always go on to the premier league eventually. So my support tends to be purely club over the individual.
So should football not have individual awards?
I think the video you're talking about is on DW sport channel. I saw it too.
With Diego Milito and Wayne Rooney not even being in top 23 in 2010 (also Sneijder being 4th), I lost all interest in the award. I wonder why nobody talks about Muller in 2014 (domestic double and WC, influential in both). The goals and assist bias along with media and marketing influence killed the award completely.
Modric winning the ballon d'or and Sneijder not is a crime. Same for Benzema and luis Suarez
Ronaldo won it with 0 trophies when Ribery won 6 in 2013
This is my first time catching an upload on its release. My life is complete.
The creation of a separate "Yashin" category is just ridiculous that makes it seem like that Keepers aren't eligible for the Ballon D'or and as a result aren't good enough to win one with the exception of Yashin himself.
That was another high-quality and well-made video that I enjoyed but that is pretty much what I thought - and what most people think - the Ballon d'Or is.
I am genuinely curious as to what else people think the Ballon d'Or is! 😂
For me, individual awards are nothing more than a novelty. It's a team sport, and the trophies that matter are the real ones, the leagues and cups, not a popularity vote among journos, coaches or players.
Agree and so does Arsene Wenger. In such a complete team sport that’s so dynamic, there’s different connotations attached to what attackers and defenders are. And because it’s so complete, the attackers cant do what they do, without defenders. So individual award seems pointless.
However it is great for hype, and that’s in the interest of businesses. And voters do have objective thought, one cant disprove that, they might genuinely be thinking through what makes a player the best, and correspondingly picking the best. It can be a popularity contest to an extent in the sense even those voters can be lulled by subconscious of just who they like

Most shocking was the Ballon d'or féminine only being introduced in 2018
There have been always some fishy balloon d'or in the history of Football.
The Ballon d'Or ceased to make any sense when they allowed coaches and captains to vote. First of all, it took away any credibility, as it was originally an award given by experts and became an award decided by fanboys. Those favouring Real Madrid and Portugal would vote for Ronaldo and those favouring Barca and Argentina would vote for Messi. It had to become painfully obvious that they were both in decline until someone else won the award. Secondly, it favours attacking players even more than before, the coaches of Cameroon or Vietnam or Chile don't watch 5-6 games per weekend, as a football journalist does,, to understand what KdB is doing or how crucial Van Dijk was to Liverpool's successes, they watch Messi and Ronaldo highlights on Sunday especially when they scored 40 goals a season in La Liga, no wonder they voted for them. And from now on they will vote for Haaland and Mbappe year in-year out, no matter how their teams are performing.
I think football would be served better by following the NFL example in individuals awards. An MVP award (not for the best, for the most valuable), and two further awards, for the BEST attacking player and for the BEST defensive player. Midfielders could be nominated for either award, depending on their role.

I'm pleasantly surprised to hear they've included national team coaches and captains to help even the vote. Journalists have can have bias, but players, coaches, they have a bias that is based in experience, 1-1 comparison, and an appreciation for those they play and compete with and against yearly, if not more. An award decided mostly by journalists.. who cares anymore.
Even in the 90s & 00s, they made odd picks (Sammer, Owen, Figo) before not giving one to Henry (over Shevchenko or Nedved) or later on snubbing Lewandowski.
Nedved deserve it though. He was basically heart of that Juve team that reached UCL final, actually his absence IMO boost his rating further given how dull that final was. Also, w/o any major international competitions, UCL that year would basically decided the winner
Nigel had the best season over Messi &Ronaldo combined. 😔
Popularity is the lowest swaying thing that makes you win goals assists and titles are worth way more and wlsway decisions much more
If I remember correctly, for most of its existence the trophy's winner was decided by specialists chosen by FF. The only time it included captains and national coaches was during the FIFA/Ballon d'Or period. Fortunately this was scraped in favour of just specilists, which is as it should. That way it is less a popularity contest (secret ballot also makes sense, not the grotesquery of seeing your vote public) and more an evaluation of the player's qualities, contributions and less of whatever they may have won with their team (last year Messi was good, but no more, and won the award just because Argentine won the Copa America).
It is actually UNfortunately that fifa/ ballon d'or was scrapped as FIFA best player still has a better end result than ballon d'or - it is important that players and managers vote also, not only journalists like in ballon d'or nowadays- like u say Messi won ballon d'or thanks to Copa America, but FIFA best player was voted Lewandowsky, so captains and managers recognised better who deserved to be best player in 2021
Messi and Cr7 made this award important. Everybody else before them didn't give this award much importance. Nobody even talked about it. Their sponsors Adidas, Pepsi,Nike, co co cola made it important for marketing.
I don't care who wins the ballon d'or. I care about world cup, euro, Copa, UCL and then the respective league trophies.
The ballon d’or literally holds zero merit as an award because it’s subjective at the end of the day with random journalists voting for it. It acts as a popularity contest favoriting attacking players when there are 11 different players all with very different and important roles in helping the team win. Let’s not also forget the general bias present in the folks voting for it.
Ballon dor is big because of its history i think
Award for who has the best PR team
Can you Include the Super Ballon d'Or
Sorry!? "Stanley Matthews, then of Blackpool 'Rovers'!?". Shoddy that...
You should have compared it to the Grammys and Oscars for the sake of the viewers who think this channel should be named Tifo-soccer. 😂😂😂😂😂
Americans triggered
It's just a popularity contest and a joke now. You'd have a journalist from the 100th ranked nation in the world cast some very strange votes would go on to determine the winner(such as in the 2021 edition)
It's funny how we french have invented so many things in sports. In Football we invented the world cup, the Euro, the european cup, ballon d'or, even FIFA, and more, but couldn't develop our own league to be at least level with Spain, Italy, Germany and England. With the players we have and the fact that the majority of west africans go in Europpe through France, we could have been the best league. A bit sad. At least we win with the national team
I don’t think Ronaldo and Messi should’ve swept it every single year during their reign. The popularity contest really got ahead of itself after some real stellar years from the duo and some stand out years from other players went unrecognised unfairly. Being the best player doesn’t necessarily mean you had the best year.
I was a little bit less convinced with Ronaldos later wins more than anything else. Just felt like a reward for top scoring and winning the C League. He definitely didn’t play the best overall game in some of those years deadly as he was.
Yeah I think from 2015 onwards he was only winning it purely based on goals and the champions league not as a player overall
Considering that Van Dijk and Lewandowski didn’t win it, the award is worth about as much as used toilet paper. It simply isn’t given to the best player in the world. Van Dijk took a decent Liverpool team from Europa League competition, and won the Champions League and Premier League. Granted he had some help from Alison, Mane and Salah. However when you don’t get dribbled past for over a year, that goes to show how good you are. Yet he got snubbed. Lewandowski was doing crazy things too yet because some third world country after 28 years they felt bad for Messi and gave it to him. You could’ve given it to Julian Alvarez and it would’ve meant the same thing.
The truth is, it's impossible to be totally objective since you may think your opinion is right but there are a million others that disagree and imagine if your picks did end up won it, just as many people would say the ballon dor is a joke.
Other than its history, i think ironically the ballon dor still holds any merit because of people like you and me keep talking about it (i guess the same way a youtuber uses controversy to keep themselves relevant)
Why is it called the Ballon d'Or in English? The World Cup is also founded and organized by a French institution but we don't refer to as the "Coupe du Monde" in English.
Probably because it sounds better than Golden Ball.
You're acting like almost a third of English words aren't already of French origin or just plain French words. English still doesn't even have an English word for coup d'etat, for example.
Another masterclass from Tifo!
Didn't know Nigel Winterburn came so close to winning the Ballon d'Or.
3:31 is wrong, Megan Rapinoe is the only winner to be playing at a non-european club at the time of her win
It's just a popularity contest. The player with the best Pr wins
The Ballon d’Or is pretty much a party for Lionel Messi and some VIP guests.
No lol
Defenders and goalkeepers hardly get a look in. Also Stanley Matthews of Blackpool Rovers?
It’s a popularity contest, there’s no clear guidelines who should win .
This is exactly what I thought the Ballon d'Or is.
It should be mentioned that Pelé and Maradona were never allowed to participate in it
Hence it only became a truly global award in 1995
So essentially you talked about how they don't follow a set of rules, how people that have no ball knowledge vote, but not once you mentioned how corrupt and biased it is smh
Ballon dor is just who is the most famous diva award..
