Just so we're clear I'm not hating on Modric but criticizing France Football who are the organization in charge of the Ballon d'Or voting.
Because I didn't really discuss much about who I thought should have REALLY won third, here's a little bonus content for you:
MY TOP 3 AND WHY:
1. Ronaldo: he performed the best and was the most dominant player with 48 goals in 48 games, pushed his team through the champions league, and scored a hattrick in the World Cup - a very rare feat. Ronaldo truly deserved it this year. So sad to see all his hard work go to waste. How many 33 year olds in football history have ever done this? And it was obvious after he left RM. They are doing terribly and Modric has played 19 games without scoring a goal.
Juventus has now started 13-0 - their best in history. Also Ronaldo is a Serie A top scorer and has the 2nd most assists so far and to rob him of what should have been a legendary 6th Ballon d'Or is a shame. I'm sure Messi would have won another to match him if he wasn't robbed because he's 2 years younger than Ronaldo so it's no big deal. I know he'll just use this as motivation because even haters can't name any player who works harder than he does - so it's possible to still win one more if he has extreme success with Juve in 2019. It might be his very last chance because you can only fight time but can't win. We'll probably never see anyone like them again and this was an absolute shame to both their legacies.
2. Messi: Not much needs to be said. 5th place behind Mbappe and Griezmann? Even a Messi hater would disagree. 45 goals and 20 assists in 54 games. Won the most trophies (but not the most prestigious one)
3. Mohammad Salah: 6th place is also murder in broad daylight as well. 44 goals in 54 games (slightly higher goal scoring ratio than Messi) Broke scoring records, Lead Scoring in Europe's top 5 leagues (passing Messi) and lead Liverpool to the Champions league final but sadly got injured (Notice how I said he "lead" Liverpool to the CL final while I said Ronaldo "pushed" Madrid to the CL final).

I don't get how you're judging Modric's season on goals and assists when he is a MIDFIELDER. He was phenomenal in the latter rounds of the UCL. Yes he didn't get the goals but he, alongside kroos, help see out results because of their passing and ability on the ball. To say his season was not "Ballon D'Or worthy" is ridiculous. He consistently put up solid performances in UCL and La Liga and excelled at HIS role, which doesnt involve scoring 40+ goals.

I think the haters have finally pushed the guy over the edge talking about his age and his due retirement and about how he is degenerating as a player. He came back stronger, faster, and overall, a better player. The momentum that he built can’t go unrecognized, but sadly, it did. It’s a shame. I’m a Messi fan through and through but even I have to say that Ronaldo should’ve took it.

Midfielders, defenders, and goalkeepers need more attention when it comes to this stuff. In ballon d’or, an attacking player will it 9 times out of 10. Really, all the positions are all very important and don’t get enough credit

People follow goals and assist but don't account for chances, what other players did to get them those chance (Strikers don't run the whole field top to bottom alone), quality of shots, and overall value added on defense and offense relative to position.
The way Modric plays around the field, especially in 2018 doesn't get enough credit. He was the steamroller for both Croatia and Madrid, the leader on the pitch and also the person who started creating new attacks and less pressure. I feel like Modric deserved it because only people look at attackers, goals and assists. But never to someone that literally dominates the scene every game he plays.
I agree with your overall point, but for me it's still not enough to warrant a Ballon D'or victory. One of either Messi or Ronaldo should've won, Modric finishing 2nd/3rd would've been perfect

Comparing a midfielder to a striker using assists and goals makes as much sense as comparing a salesman to a programmer based on how many lines of codes they produced.
Where is the number of occasions created? The number of balls intercepted? The rate of succesful passes? The rate of succesful dribbles? The distance covered etc etc. There are so many parameters that you didn't include and that are just as important.

I agree, it hurts my brain to argue this because their is so much to say. Too many football fans hold too much weight on G/A and this is why it's only attackers that win these individual awards and never midfielders, defenders or goalkeepers.

It's much much MUCH harder to prove yourself as a clinical defender than it is to be a clinical forward. Goalkeepers have been close to winning the Ballon D'or so they are at least considered in the voting. But to measure a defender's worth to a team over a whole year by saying "Oh yeah, he stopped a lot of chances" is way too ambiguous. Many required skills of pro defenders can be done basically across the board by most of those pro defenders. Any run-of-the-mill defender can stop a cross or cover a forward making a run; but few forwards in the game today could ever dream of accomplishing the offensive genius by the likes of Messi and Ronaldo.

It's only done on individual performance, for an attacker it's goals and assists, for midfielders it's assists in first place and maybe scoring and defending, for defenders it's their defensive performance and winning duals, the same for goalkeepers it's their saves that make us judge their performance.

You can't lump all midfielder into one book. You judge them mostly using the eye test. But there are other compliment stats that football analysts use like the ball progression stats, passes into the penalty area, no of recoveries, etc.

First, the voting process was not the same in 2010 and in 2018. In 2010, the votes were given by players and managers, ultimately resulting in a lot of people voting for team mates regardless of individual stats. Others would vote purely for political reasons, e.g. African players voting for other African players. So the votes during the period 2008-2016 don't really reflect the usual voting process. And it is a known fact that if the journalists had voted instead of players and managers, Inesta would have won the Ballon d'or in 2010.
Second, you massively underestimate the weight of a world cup in the perception if an annual performance. Yes, a world cup is "only" 7 matches (potentially at least), but in terms of audience, impact, image, influence in history, it is massively more important and regarded than a Champions' League run, as prestigious the competition may be otherwise. I am part of those who thought that Ronaldo did deserve to win the Ballon d'or that year, yet we have to take into account how incredibly influential a world cup is. You cannot simply consider this as one month out of 12.
Third, let's also not forget that defenders and goal keepers are incredibly underestimated in the run for the trophy. It's definitely another aspect that should deserve change.

Some of this is facts but world cup can’t be more important. Haaland, Zlatan, Vlahovic, Salah, Mane, Son, Hakimi, Osihmen etc are all top players who just happens to play for nations that are less competitive in a World Cup and so stakes are low for these players to ever win it especially Zlatan even though he is old now . We see more top players in UCL than WC and the teams aren’t more equal but more competitive in the UCL .
