I've only heard of Martin Miller by seeing him and his guitar on the Ibanez website. After watching, words cannot describe how much of a wise and brilliant musician he his. Glad I saw this!
Martin and Tom Quayle... Two of the most intimidating guitarists of today, their phrasing and technical command is unparalleled
Ken T true
@@bestboy897 and then theres rick. We all know which Rick I'm talking about
@@bryanlevi5226 I'd put Martin over Rick, easily.
i am blown away with the happy sad approach which is all about perception of time and music and importance of order of notes affect on human perception
Deep man
The more I watch and understand your content, the more I enjoy it. Thanks bro - keep doing what you're doing!
Get Mateus Asato!
samme79 That would be so cool
OMG yeah superl cool
Yeah dude!
yeap that would be great
I think that interview would be way to awkward lol
Martin is John Petrucci with a jazz degree. GREAT!
Thank you both.
Thanks for this, Tyler! Martin is so incredibly talented :D
That jam at the end was awesome!
Rare to see such an amazing player with the ability to describe his thought processes in such a tangible way. Great post again Tyler!
Hey Tyler you should try and get Tosin Abasi on the show
that would be lit.
Great episode! Thanks for shining a light on Martin Miller. Great player.
Thanks, this was great. Some really solid advice from Martin there, and some good questions from you.
Martin Miller is absolutely great! Great interview Tyler! As always, nice nuggets of information around there regarding improv.
Great interview! I like the way you humbly held back a little, and let your guest be in the spotlight, I mean, being a great guitar player and educator in your own right.
I love your channel, Tyler. Keep up the great work!
0:13 the most satisfying "Hey, how ye doing" up to date.
Really glad to see this making a comeback. You rock my man!
Martin starts at 4:50
Boogenhiemer thx
I didn't know who Martin was before this interview but i found myself really intrigued by everything he had to say. I can't wait now to check out all his material and everything he talked about. Thanks heaps!
Superb !! You are doing a brilliant job Tyler.
YES!! My favorite podcast is back!
Very Cool. I see a lot of your stuff (and Martins stuff) lately, since I started with my Guitar again. Awesome to see two of my favorite Guitar RUclipsrs in this podcast. Thank you.
Excellent. I started thinking functionally as soon as I learned modes and have never so far needed any more complex of a way to think.
This was exactly what I needed right now. Loved the "30minutes-rule", since I tend to waste exactly this time. Won´t happen again, I hope. Thanks, Martin!
such a brilliant way to talk about music and tone, this guy is awesome. Awesome player, awesome mind, awesome way of thinking. Love this dude !
Great great vid! Thanks and keep it up dude, you have really amazing content!
A lot of good advices. Thanks for this video!

@@beerbatov he's starting posting again, but he had problems with his fingers, there was some muscle injury or something
These two guys are very well educated in music! I love this vid!
great video, and what a joy it must have been to hang out with Martin! :)
I enjoyed this video a lot! Some really great perspective
fuckin love this channel, as a 20 year old whose been playing since I was 10 and lost interest and suddenly piqued again with guitar many times over the years, its really nice to see a no bullshit guitar based channel where everything said is just the real stuff none of the pretentious artsy shit or the arrogant nonsense you see from some overly opinionated guitarists. Very excited for upcoming podcasts!
YES! I missed your podcast! :D
What a guy indeed ! Really liked this interview
Really like your super system i have level 1 and 2 i also have the midern rock course and the exotic scales. they really helped me out finding my playing style
Ive learned a ton from watching martin miller videos so this is nice to see
You can see Tyler just loves the Lydian mode... whenever he plays something for someone to improvise on top, that's his weapon of choice... cheers!
The one thing I really enjoy that you do well, is keep me updated on the Guitar WORLD, and I read and watch shows all of the time, but you seem to always catch the pulse and provide even more insight. Which I greatly appreciate:) You got subscribed with the first funny vid that you created when you learned a great lick and your wife wanted to hear Taylor Swift! lol, Anyway, awesome vids! So, I don't have any big demands, just keep on rockin!! Thanks Tyler for your hard work!
Much great advice here!
Wow extremely interesting video guy, a big thanks for ur work, it was awesome :)
GREAT VIDEO !!!
Love your channel from Detroit Rock City 🎸
Thank for introducing me to Mr Miller. Will have to check out his chanel.
this is great love the thunb nail
Hey Tyler I just subscribed and I have to say that I already love it you are so help fun and fun and I am so happy I subscribed because you are awesome and I love the video
Awesome guitar!
can you tell me what lavalier mics you use for your vids and would you recommend the ones you're using? I know nothing about them, but am looking for one for some clutter free voice recording for my own vids too.
take your time.
straight fire..
Maybe get Troy Grady on the show for a technique intensive episode? :)
Martin Miller is an awesome speaker!!!!
I love that jam you guys did at the end there. Reminds me of Fleetwood Mac's Sara
What a great interview and jam! How can you possibly top this?
Loved it :)
Loving the new intro 🔥
I feel like Martin Miller is one of the coolest guys in the world :D
Wow! Such an amazing interview.
Can't wait to see Martin and Tom on their upcoming Europe clinic tour. I predict it's gonna be a blast!
You asked great question Tyler tho
MATEUS ASATO!
Man I know the exact comment you were referring to about the "overplaying" thing (at least I think so anyway) on the Little Wing video (which was really inspiring to me and I transcribed your solo from that) and that comment just drove me crazy when I read it
Very cool
I hear hints of "Steve Lukather" in his paying too. Loved this segment!!
Can't believe how quickly Martin found all those triads/chords at 17:35. So jealous!
The new intro kicks ass \m/
Martin is the MAN
Fantastic interview Tyler! Thanks for revealing another amazing talent to me. I know I must live under a rock to not know about Martin already - I'm sorry :-(
Martin, you have a new subscriber/fan. You're awesome sir! Some of that towards the end sounded like a slightly jazzier and (IMHO) better version of Eric Johnson. I certainly hope that comes across as a compliment.
It's the Viper from Game of Thrones meets the lead singer from Electric Six in the Infected Girls music video.
That's Awful that someone would leave a comment about his drummer in a negative light. His drummer kicks ass!!! If you can't see that your blind and deaf.
Hello love From india
Nice podcast, really enjoyed the conversation. One thing I have to criticize about the audio quality in your home studio, it's really wet. Maybe you should put some bass traps in the corners, that could help reduce the wetness in the signal.
Very nice questions and discussions! Do one with Mateus Asato!
idk why but filming in a room with window light gives it a nicer vibe, i think you should do it more!
Hey Martin. I find myself in a bit of an awkward situation really where, i really love learning music theory and working on my improvisational skills but i feel like my technique is holding me back from playing stuff i can think of. What would you advise for someone who is in my place? Thanks.
i'm not Martin. Improvization is important but good solid technique makes the improv better, cleaner and opens the door for Phrasing ideas. Guthrie Govan said that Technique is toolbox in order to craft art you need good tools.bending in tune,Legato, controlled vibrato etc. Hope this helps.
Go back in the video around the 13 minute mark. Basically allow yourself to have an end goal. What you want as a whole for a musician. Create new space for new aspects and apply them to your everyday playing.
Like in life, feed yourself new information that you can use as a whole. Dont simply stick to what you know; be ready to implement new ideas.
Go look up cracking the code and watch Martin millers interview. Learn about what Troy Grady has discovered in picking technique and you will be amazed at how many things open up for you.
Learn sweep picking. Then buy a couple of Rolexes
What is the LANEY amp Martin is playing through?
Does anyone knows the name of the book Martin mentioned?
Are you playing lydian if you play the major scale over a IV Chord in that key?
And can you play modes on their own without the chords backing them up, and if yes, how?
Can someone please answer me these questions
No. The Lydian scale is an Ionian scale with a #4. The root determines what the scale you are playing is. If you were to play the Ionian scale on the root of the I chord over the IV chord being played, then you would achieve your original idea which is a major scale shape being played over the IV chord.
You may also play modes on their own without chords backing them up. There are certain ‘outside’ notes that are okay and often encouraged to play in some genres which welcome the ‘color tones’ or rather, notes that are not specifically diatonic to whatever chord is being played at any given time. Theoretically speaking, and of the 12 semitone pitches within the chromatic scale may be played with respect to the 3rd and 7th interval quality of whatever chord is being played. These 3rds and 7ths quality notes within a chosen diatonic or non-diatonic scale to the chord which is being played is what makes the single notes being played outline the various chords that are being played in a diatonic fashion or a change in tonal center, as most often in pieces of music that are connected to the jazz genre.
The first name that came up in Martin's mind was Steve Morse ! .... I rest my case . 5 time winner in the Overall Best Guitarist by Guitar Player Magazine ! Certainly my Hero of all time !
cool
could you do one episode with Rabea Massad? could guess that maybe you already have him on your list but if not, really suggesting you to do one with him . really nice work btw cheers
@17:05 he plays an C Ab Bb Eb. It seems to be an Absus2/C and not the Abmaj7/C...
Seems like a really nice guy!
gets a bit wanky, if you will.. so subtle lol.
17:22 question: how do you relate chords and modes like that? I'm trying to learn solo guitar. I started as a bassist, so I always learned root and fifth and sometimes I'll throw in a 3rd or a 6th in there. I'm a pretty good rhythm player, and I think I have the physical skills to play lead, but how do I know which modes to play with which chords?
Ab lydian. the chord is C*G*Bb*Eb. The lydian mode, if I know my stuff without googling it, is the fourth mode and it has one sharp, the sharp four. that sharp four is Dnatural.. which is consonant with G! which is functioning as the 5 in that chord, relating back to the C. soo... basically I need to remember that notes have numbers in the key (when I'm following a chord progression.) but they also have function in a chord. A Db, which is the 'right' note for Abmaj, would be dissonant with the G natural, which is the 7th of Ab. AND it's also dissonant with the C being a half step away, and because C is the bass note (i didnt use 'root'. is it the root?) that's super important. When it's the 4th note in the Ab Lydian, it becomes the 9 of that C.
it feels like the only thing making this an Abmaj7/C chord is the Bb (which is the 9!) and the Eb (which is the 5.)
I guess when I really look at it.. you have 3*maj7*9*5 (or i guess the 13)
Why isn't that 1*5*min7*min11?
....
18:52 This is a great podcast btw. makes me wanna practice and git gud, and I feel like it's reminding me of some old practice routines that ive just put away, like figuring out arpeggios. across the neck.
26:05, it's tough to play an Ibanez and not do a 'bit' of metal from time to time.
28:47 maybe he's talking about hte top comment on his She's So Heavy video. just subbed to your channel btw, Martin
I thought the title said Marcus Miller at first, and got really excited
You a shred king bru
Hi
Great dude that Tarantino guy

Do you learning In Your Atmosphere by John Mayer next. Hardest riff of his in my personal opinion
Do an Episode With Rick Beato!
Do one of these with Ian Thornley. Trust me on this.
How is the redish guitar in the background called ?
I'm pretty sure that's his seven string music man with the roasted neck if I'm not mistaken...
Yes it's a Music Man JP 15 seven strings it features also a piezo pickup system in the JP Music Man Signature Bridge
yep, that's the one!!👌👌👍👍
Waiting for them to debate about 3 note per string vs CAGED haha
What happened to the monthly Q&A
It's coming back in podcast form! Thanks for the support!
Music is Win all right cool I enjoy having the Q and A's in the background while I practice guitar thanks dude keep shredding
Why do I feel Martin will squat like a Slav? 👌
can you do it with mateus asato next time? please :)
Billboard 'Buy MM1" OK, you sold me. When and where bro?
Like the fantastic, awesome and brilliant genius Allan Holdsworth said. Don't speak badly about another musician, even if you don't like them. And Allan is...was 😢 usually right! 🤘
I'd like to see John Petrucci \m/
These guys are talking a foreign language to me. I just started playing a year ago and I was confused throughout his whole video lol
