Sam writes, helps film, and edits all the video’s (in addition to singing, song-writing, and forging direction of arrangements). Together with Lead guitarist and his gf John Hays and Nyssa , they have Outaline Productions. The rest of the band pitches in too. All their videos are self produced. Sam isn’t saying his friends aren’t there. He’s saying they get it and reassure him that he can go home. And yes, he’s rolling through a lot of moods in the song, and the video, which is part of why he is questioning how his friends hang in there. Thanks so much for discovering and helping promote this fabulous band, and great and talented group of guys!
To understand his lyrics, you have to get to know him and his past. This song is about how he truly sees himself. His self doubt stems from the bullying he endured as shown in the song "The Madness", but also from when he was younger, people would befriend him with the intent to purposely publicly humiliate him later. Sam would be beaten up on a regular basis, including being pushed down stairs. He had to finish his 8th grade year at home. As he got older, it was hard for him to trust anyone. Every song that he writes is a part of his personal story. If you continue your journey down the ND rabbit hole, stop by and watch the acoustic version of "30 Somehow" - Live. It gives you a taste of the power he can put behind that rasp and how well he can control it. The song is about what he was going through when he turned 30. His pause just before he sings about his grandmother's illness gets me every time (she passed in May and was everything to him). @@BleedingHeartFlowerCrying If you'd like to join in on Zooms, he holds them quit often. It's a great way to get to know him personally. We just hang with him for 2-3 hours, he takes any question we throw at him. He does this through the band's Patreon. I only pay $3 a month. But this is also where he puts full covers (and a few demos) that are downloadable.
If you enjoy their music videos, check out "Burning A Good Thing". Their budget for the entire video was $53. Sam was living in his van at the time to save $$, the slap was real and Sam almost froze to death during the fire pit scene. These guys work hard for what they love. Check out what they can do with $53.
He writes a lot about mental health. Another one is What Makes You Sad which was used on an episode of The Good Doctor. The Madness - he wrote about the bullying he endured as a young teen is very heart wrenching.
