    When I dye my shoes I pull out the soles before the SA soak, if the shoes let me...some are glued down better than others. I find that the shoes are easier to dye with them out, the washing is easier and they dry far faster. I also got tired of the soles getting ruined by the soaking, I think the SA is hard on the glue. When the dyeing process is all done, I simply glue them back in place.

    • @MrTieDye

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 года назад

      Welcome to my channel, I am glad you found it... as for the Soda ash... it is what activates the Fiber Reactive Procion Dyes, another name for it is Sodium Carbonate. You can find it at one of the dye houses, or you can purchase locally from a pool supply store, or in the laundry isle under the name Washing Soda, just be sure to check the label says 100% Soda Ash.
      Here is how I mix or make soda ash: ruclips.net/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/видео.html
      and I do a prewash in a textile soap called Syntrapol which has been replaced by these two soaps at Dharma : www.dharmatrading.com/cgi-bin/search.cgi?query=synthrapol
      OR.... here are some other pH neutral soaps that some dyers use and can be found locally : Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner (I found this at Home Depot)
      I have not sold any shoes for a while, but I was selling them for around $100.00 ... basically I was charging $50.00 to dye them and then whatever the blanks cost... I was buy-in them from www.shoes.com ... they had discount codes all the time, plus you can sign up for their saving club and build points good toward more shoes
      the other place I found good deals on Cons and Vans was www.famousfootwear.com ... they had a club to join and gave discount now and then... some were just buy one pair , get another 50% off .... but when I was dyeing a lot of shoes, I would use the code to stock up
      anyways, I hope this helps you, but just in case, here is my Beginner's Playlist that has lots of tips and tricks to tie-dye :ruclips.net/p/PLMEtBqB2BzuquDrHsqxbv8LdFkaIyy3wo

    This may have been asked, but I didn't want to read through 300+ comments. I have a front loading washing machine. Would spinning out shoes damage my machine, or even be effective? Are there any other techniques for that, or would air drying be my best bet?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 года назад +2

      I put mine in the machine with the cotton facing out .... so a front loader would be more difficult to get them situated and balanced, but yes I think you can just air dry them for a while

      yes ... by the time they are done batching, they are about dry, which is why I put the wet rags and water in to try to create some humidity ... they need to stay at least moist for the dye to bond

    Why do others use the dryer or sun to dry their shoes, and you don’t? Also when I mix the Dharma procion fiber active dye do I use warm/hot water?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 года назад +1

      I think that comes down to personal choice, I will set mine outside where they may get a little bit of sun to speed the drying, but I also know that direct sun exposure for long periods of time can fade the fabric some.... so I prefer partial sun or shade when I dry my shoes ....
      really it is personal choice ..... this art was so secretive for so many years that many people just developed their own processes which is why you can get so many answers when asking what seems to be a simple question ... so I show how I do it and recommend people find what works best for them, be it my way, someone else's way, or a way you come up with yourself, or you blend a couple peoples ways.... I hope this helped more than confused you ✌🏻💚🙏
      and for me, I think putting in the dryer is too noisy, and I am not sure how the shoes would hold up to that.... I not saying you cannot do it that way, just that I have not so I cannot speak to it

    Can you explain the orange turning brown when dyed with other colors bear it? I don't quite understand.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  Год назад

      yeah it is the liquid dyes mixing or blending together when applied next to each other ... if you just add just a little bit of Purple, or Green to Orange, you get Brown ...
      So when dyeing shoes, I try to surround the Orange with colors that it blends better with like Yellow or Fuchsia
      Here is a video where I use purple and orange to tie-dye a tee, but tin this case I can control the blending some by applying the darker color first and letting it spread out some, then adding the orange to it ... a little bit of orange in the purple is not enough to show much change : ruclips.net/video/TAo9BgtpZ2Q/видео.html
      One more side note on the mixing of colors, here is a video where I dye Spiral s in various ways, on the first one, I use just Primary Colors and mix them on the tee shirt to create a full rainbow spiral, it is the first tee I dye in this video : ruclips.net/video/2UJkPKHvruk/видео.html

    Hey Mr. Tie Dye!! I have more questions. I was getting ready to dye my shoes. Thought I had everything, and started reading about dye thickener. It makes sense doing shoes why you would want a thickener since you are dealing with a smaller area to dye. My question is this: What is in the thickener? Is it just the aginate or is it a combination of urea and the aginate?? Then, I am doing 2 pairs of shoes so is a small bag of aginate enough? So confused and ready to get tie dying!! Your answer will be much appreciated!! Thank you!!

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  4 года назад

      most of the shoes I dyed, I did with just regular dyes, no thickener, but the dye spreads fast so I lay colors down that mix well... so like my orange, I make sure to surround it with yellow or fuchsia
      only when i wanted to 'dye paint' a detailed design did I use thickener ..... and for that I used sodium alginate, urea and salt in my mix ..... I do not seem to be able to post a link here for some reason, but I do have two videos on how to make thick water/dye .... so just search my channel for thick black dye .... and it is the older video .... with the shoes, you will need the urea if you are going to paint them with dye

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 года назад

      Yes... the soda ash is what activate the Procion Dyes and causes the dye to bond with the cotton fibers of the shoes .... but you can soak them in soda ash and then set them on end to drip dry some... once they are just barely damp, then you can start dyeing them, batch for 24-48 hours, I do mine in a tub with a lid so the stay wet... (if the dye drys out, then the bonding stops) ... then you can rinse in the sink, then I just do repeated soaks in hot water until color stops coming out, then I would wrap in a towel and squeeze to get some more of the liquid out, then let them air dry... oh and I do any re shaping I need to while they are still wet... sometimes the heel part is mis-shapen a bit, but that maybe be from the spinning out I do 😉✌🏻 ... I hope this helps

      the Procion Dyes I use work on natural fibers like cotton, but not on polyester ... so if you use a different kind of material for the shoes, you may need to find a different kind of dye, or you can paint them... but I have not tried any of that, I have just worked with cotton canvas shoes like Cons, Vans, Keds and a few off brands

      I buy my synthrapol from dharma, the same place I buy my dyes from .... www.dharmatrading.com/chemicals/synthrapol-detergent.html ........... and the soda ash can be purchased from there as well, but it can also be purchased from pool supply stores as it is the same chemical they use to adjust the pH .... ask for soda ash or Sodium Carbonate .... another place you can find soda ash is in the laundry isle at the store, it is called Washing Soda ... just check the label and it should say 100% soda ash or sodium carbonate .... and one more name I have heard it called by is pH Up ....
      have fun and be aware the dye spread quickly on the shoes, so I add the dye slowly and I put colors that will blend nicely next to each other, like orange for example, I make sure to surround it with yellow, red or fuchsia

    I love, love your videos so does my 8 yr old granddaughter. We have made a few tshirts from your tutorial for her. I tie dyed some shoes but the colors are coming out dull, I'm using procion from dharma trading. I mixed the colors on room temperature water and soak them in soda ash for 25 mins prior to dying.
    Please can you help me I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Thank you in advance.
    Thank you for your videos.

      @MrTieDye  4 года назад +4

      thank you and you are welcome.
      For shoes, the first thing, are they cotton shoes?? polyester does not take these kind of dyes?? I worked mostly with Converse, Vans, or Keds as I knew they were cotton.
      Then I did a prewash on them to make sure there is nothing the manufacturer sprayed on them as this could interfere with the dyes.
      Then after I soak in soda ash, I spin out the excess in the washer, too much soda ash in the shoes means extra liquid which can dilute the dyes, or it can cause them to run even more.
      Next, after I have applied the dye, I let them it for a few minutes and then I will go back and touch up any spots that look faded by adding a little extra dye... with converse being made from canvas, the dye can soak into the thicker fabric and the outer surface can then look faded
      Then I batch mine in tub with a lid so they stay damp while batching, if they dry out, then the dye bonding stops... also, I will toss a couple wet rags in the bin just to help keep the humidity up.
      and I batch mine for 24-48 hours before I do the rinsing and washing. I hope one of these tips help you... I wish you success on your next pair

    HOW do you know how to price to sell? Because I know once I make a pair with ideas. Someone is going to want a pair. Lol

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 года назад +1

      Pricing was always difficult for me.... so I would look around to see what others are charging for work similar to mine.... then find my price around that
      but another way to do it is to look at your costs for an item, and with shoes, if you use name brands, that is an aspect of it.... then how much time does it take you to make a pair?? you time and talent are what you are being reimbursed for plus the costs of your supplies and blank
      so back when I was selling shoes, I could sometimes get the blanks on sale, but that was not the price I used to figure my selling price as it could vary .... find what you would pay on a regular basic for your supplies and then add the time/talent you add to the shoes for your final cost .... then for custom orders, you may add more in for that if it requires more work/talent, or just because customs tend to take more time
      I hope this helps... have fun creating and I wish you success!! ❤️✌🏻🙏🌈🥳
      oh and the place where I bought most of my shoes were from www.shoes.com they had discount codes a lot of the time, posted right on their site, plus you can sign up for rewards, I made and sold lots of shoes, so I got lots of discounts from their club .... other places I bought shoes from were Famous Footwear and Zappos for kids sizes

      I use Procion Dyes and they require soda ash to activate and bond with the cotton fibers... Soda Ash is also known as Sodium Carbonate ... it can be purchased where you buy your procion dyes (see links below)
      OR, you can buy locally... I get mine for a pool supply store, I buy a 50lb bag for $35.00 ....
      you can buy it in the stores... Laundry isle it is called 'Washing Soda' just check the label to make sure it says 100% Soda Ash or Sodium Carbonate ... and there is a product called pH Up for pools that is also soda ash ....
      and lastly, if you cannot find it, you can make it by heating Baking Soda also known as Sodium Bicarbonate ... I demo it in this video where I compare store bought soda ash, some bought from dharma where I get my dyes and some that I made : ruclips.net/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/видео.html

      BUT, on your net pair of shoes, if you want to get a spiral design, you can thicken the dyes some and paint it on, I soak my shoes in soda ash, spin out the excess and then I let them dry completely and then I mix up thick water and mix in some dyes and then paint it on

    What adhesive spray do you use for the soles? Sorry if I missed it somewhere.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 месяца назад

      the only times I use adhesive for the shoes is when something comes apart ... sometimes the sole insert will come loose during the wash out cycle and I will use 'Shoe-Goo' (it is a name brand glue found in the shoe section of a store, comes in a red tube) to glue sole back int the shoe after everything has been washed and is completely dry... I use rubber gloves to apply some of the 'Shoe-Goo' to the inside bottom of the shoe, then carefully insert the sole back in and then I apply pressure to make sure it sticks good, then I let it dry completely for a day
      other times just the fabric from the sole will come off and this is a bit more of a pain to put it back on with the sole still in the shoe, so I will check to see if the sole is a bit loose and if so, then I will remove it from the shoe, this makes putting the fabric back onto the sole a bit easier... I found some spray adhesive at the hardware store, this one is called 3M Super 77 Multipurpose Adhesive ... I will lat the soles and the fabric part onto some cardboard and then I spray the sole and the back side of the fabric with the adhesive, I let it set for a couple minutes according to the instructions on the can and then I match them up and press them down good so the stick... I let it set for a few hours to dry, then I re-glue the sole back in as described above
      it is a pain when the shoes come apart, but this is how I fix them ...
      I hope this has answered your question , but just in case I misunderstood the question and you were just asking about the dyeing process and if I use something to cover the soles while I dye them... I do not apply anything to the soles while I am dyeing them I am just careful to wipe up any drips or dye as they happen, if the dye it left on the soles for too long, it will stain them ✌️

      Okay... for the first question... a color wheel will help with that... if the colors are close on the wheel, then they will , mix well, but opposites do not.... for example ... Orange/Yellow mixed with Purple will make brown ... orange/green will make brown .... so I tend to lay orange down and surround it with yellow, fuchsia or red

      yes, when using Procion dyes, you need soda ash at that is what activates the dyes and then they bond with the cotton fibers of the tee, tapestry or shoes in this case 😉✌🏻

      Sandra Mort you can, as long as the shoes are opposite each other they spin out nicely and you don’t have any clunking. No Dye gets in the washer because you wash it out in the wash tub.

      if you are going with one of those instead of Procion dye, I would choose the Tulip dyes, but make sure to have the shoes prepped and ready before you mix your dyes as they become active as soon as you add the water and will give the best colors right after they are mixed and must be used the same day... so have some other stuff ready to dye also

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  2 года назад +1

      the washer needs to spin out at the end of the rinse cycle so you can put damp clothes into the dryer... I set my washer to that point in the cycle ... I know some washer do not allow for this though 😉✌🏻

    What is soda ash

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  7 месяцев назад

      soda ash is a dry powder that you mix 1 cup with 1 gallons of water ... it raises the pH level of the cotton fibers when you soak the shoes or tees in it... he higher pH is what activates the Procion Dyes that I use and causes a chemical bond between the dye and the cotton fibers
      Here is how I mix or make soda ash: ruclips.net/video/vD1MSB0sAY8/видео.html

    Hey, I'm not too sure what soda ash is, but can I soak my converse in baking soda / bicarbonate soda ?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 года назад

      Soda Ash is what is used to raise the pH to activate the Procion Dyes I use.... it is also used to raise the pH for swimming pools, so that is where I buy mine from.... it is also called Sodium Carbonate....
      it is much stronger than baking soda (the pH from baking soda is not high enough, so it will work somewhat, but your color may be very light compared to using soda ash)
      BUT, you can heat baking soda in the oven to turn it into soda ash... I did a video on it, .... one thing, it is better to use a glass dish than a tin pan like I did .... or you can put baking paper down instead of tin foil....

    What was the stuff you used to soak the shoes at the end? Not the soda ash, the final soak.

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 года назад

      it was Synthrapol Soap.... it is a pH neutral textile soap sold by Dharma... they now make their own textile soap and that is the one I will use when I run out of Synthrapol .... many dyers use Blue Dawn Dish Soap or Folex Carpet Cleaner as they too are pH neutral
      this is important as soda ash raises the pH to activate the dyes, so this lowers the pH and stops the dye bonding process

    I had flooding from ONE SINGLE drop of Tulip yellow, dripped out of a tiny hook tip syringe. Never had that happen with Jacquard or other brands.
    I presume that you prep the sneaks the same as any other dyeable fabric like cotton... wash and rinse, to remove any sizing, etc... spin in the washer or flip in a cool dryer to pull out excess water, and soak in soda ash solution for 15-20 minutes, am I right?

    • @MrTieDye
      @MrTieDye  3 года назад

      yikes ... that is no fun .... and yes I prep the shoes the same as tees, I pre wash by soaking in a tub of hot water and a bit of synthrapol soap (some dyers use Blue Dawn) ... rinse and then soak in soda ash for 20 minutes, then I spin out in the washer to remove excess soda ash, now with them barely damp, I start adding the dyes, then batch for 48 hours and then rinse and wash by soaking again.... I demo it in the video ... have fun!! .... oh and I do not put soda ash stuff in the dryer

    • @meganmcgowan5798
      @meganmcgowan5798 3 года назад

      @@MrTieDye Yeah... ruined my work. Even worse, even though I followed the instructions to the letter, and used 100% cotton material and even pre-washed it in Dawn Blue without any fabric softener, the yellow completely came out on the first cold rinse and unbinding after a 24 hour process time. It's as if there was NO soda ash in the dye powder. I generally have no trouble mixing up custom colors, but the yellow didn't mix with anything else to make a nice secondary. The second color in the mix made a blob of its original color, and the yellow just ran out all over the area. They didn't blend at all, and that as you well know is part of tie dye magic.
      The red was also terrible and crept out to make a weird yellow and orange around the edges of the color area. It was gross. I ended up throwing that work away, along with the rest of the unused dye powder. I thought I would just try these out to see how they were, so I could teach a friend with developmental disabilities about tie dye with a simple start, so as not to overwhelm her. Big mistake. But at least soda ash soaking isn't that hard to do, nor is it expensive. Nope. I'll stick with Jacquard or Dharma or Grateful Dye. Better quality and a better bargain.
