- Follow me on this 8-day solo spring canoe trip through the Canadian wilderness. This trip begins and ends on Magnetawan Lake in Algonquin Provincial Park, and takes me deep into the backcountry through spectacular lakes and rivers. I fish for brook trout, encounter wildlife, and camp at many beautiful sites along the way.
Please note that the opening drone shots were taken outside of Park boundaries.

Oh yeah! So beautiful and peaceful... apart from those pesky black flies of course. Wonderful wildlife - I particularly love to hear the birds calling in the evening light. Thank you for bringing us along, it was a fantastic trip. And perfectly filmed, as always. I did miss seeing what your meal was at the end of the trip though!!! :)

Another very relaxing video. Thanks for sharing! The black flies were making me feel itchy though lol. All the moose sightings were awesome. We stopped at the site in Grassy Bay on our November trip and had to smash through ice to get to it. It was so cold! Great looking site in warmer temps though.
Thanks Steph! Yeah it was a fun trip despite the bugs. I really loved that grassy bay site - had paddled past it so many times before without ever stopping to check it out.
What an epic journey here!! Holy cow!! You captured everything so well!! The loons, the buzzing of the black flies, everything!! I guess I’m always surprised to see more people in tents than hammocks at Algonquin. I’ve camped in so many campgrounds that you paddle into or drive to and the tent pad becomes a frog pond after any decent storm. That was why I switched back to hammocks, especially in backcountry. I went on that solo trip last weekend and it was good I brought a hammock system cuz it probably rained about 4” up there over the weekend. There was a small stream flowing underneath my hammock late last Saturday night!🤣.

i finished a 5 day on your Saturday morn and thought wow! these people coming in are in for it. I learned with drizzle on last day that I have to reconfigure my set up totally to trip through rain and bug season. I met a couple leaving on day 2 of 3 day because tent failed and it was mild up to then.

Great video, really enjoyed it! I'm a fisheries biologist. Those fish you were calling "suckers/whitefish" are actually Fallfish. They're a large species of minnow in the family Leuciscidae. Not great eating lol.

Everyone associates the Loon to Portaging, which is awesome, but I feel that white-throated sparrow is just as much a part of Ontario portaging. Great looking trip Kev. I just finished a 5 day in there to big trout, and nobody in there. The birds were the highlight of this one in breeding season. And multiple moose sightings in June. Just tough out the bugs for a bit and perfection. You stayed at the big trout site I just stayed at. I stayed there because i came from white trout lake( not small) in high winds and was happy to just get there in tact and fearful of moving out onto big trout in those winds. I commenting(edit) as I watch...that section in grassy bay was so windy when i came through that i barely paddled. I just dug in the paddle like a rudder and hoped i made the bends...not even enough time to pull out the camera as 3 moose were in there!! There was a campsite there(first one west to east) that I thought would be a spectacular site to stay at overlooking those wetlands...but not when I was there without a bug shelter, more so early spring. u gotta bring powdered protein.
I agree Brent - the white-throated sparrow is my favourite song bird. Sounds like you had a great trip! June is the best month for spotting wildlife but yes the bugs can be rough. Smart move not to carry-on in high winds. Cheers
I'm just into watching this, but I can see, at 7:17 in, why you do what you do. The shadows and fading light, the lapping sounds of the water from your oar, the sounds of the bird calls as they settle in for the night - all of it spells Peace. ❤
You summed it up very well. It’s in those moments that I feel the most at peace.

Awesome wildlife sightings, I didn't see any moose this year.....I think those might be Fallfish....New boat looks nice and a little more versatile then the swift but I guess it's a trade off from the day's of solo ports with the swift.
Thanks Jay. I'm sure you'll spot some on your next trip. Regarding the new boat - yes it is a huge trade off. If I was only planning on tripping in Algonquin I definitely would have kept the Swift. Double carrying is a lot more work - and really slows me down. That said, I'm really enjoying the Esquif and I will need its toughness on some future trips.

Thanks Matt! I've had that chair for many years, decided to bring it along again now that I'm double carrying. Forgot how nice it is to sit in a chair after a long day!

Great video. Nice coincidences too. I was on Big Trout this May 2-4 weekend, at the site across from you at the head of the channel leading to White Trout Lake, and 2 years ago on the same long weekend I spend 2 nights at the site on Misty Lake (amazing site). Enjoy your travels

Awesome trip. I was surprised how many youtubers were out at the same time in the same area; the Baird bros, Shawn James, Derek S, Xander Budnick, and of course you. The loons and peepers were calling you out. Perfect weather except for 1 day. Sorry the fishing sucked but you got to see all those newborn moose. Thanks for sharing.

I was expecting this after your cameo in Ted's video. I start a 5 day trip tomorrow (june 21) and it looks like I will have to make that payment back to Mother nature after the absolute perfect weather of last falls trip when when I had seen you on N. Haha. I was in a bit of a rush this time so I just made a quick stop to the Timmies drive-through on my way home. And I had no idea those suckers were good eating!

Thanks Eze! That backpack is a Mountain Equipment Company Slogg 115 HD. It's a Canadian brand, so I'm not sure if it can be purchased elsewhere. You might just have to pick one up on your next canoe trip over here 😄

Great video and seemed like a great trip. I have two questions for you Kev. One is how long does it take you to do a 1K average portage with a double carry? It takes me approx 1 hr to do the 3 km total but not sure if this is normal. Did that 1.7km portage seem ok with that new heavy canoe you have or make you wish you had the old lighter one. I am so close to pulling the trigger and getting the same one. Keep these great inspirational videos coming
Hey Cliff. I’m honestly not quite sure how long a 1k portage now takes me with a double carry - but the difference feels significant. It is 3 times the distance after all. You definitely have to give yourself more time when planning a trip. This was an easy trip compared to past ones, so it wasn’t an issue and I really do enjoy the walk back for the second load.
Like the traditional paddling and canoe . But you're a bit shy on the fishing .On a remote trip as this just got to get more fish . But watching a lot of youtube canoers their technique is not good .At least not mine . I'm figuring the bigger lakes were not warm enough for the specks but a laker or two can still be caught .I also use a 15 ' bob special which i think is a better canoe .
I'm very much an amateur when it comes to fishing, so I've got a lot to learn. I also slept in late every single day on this trip, so I was often fishing mid-day which is not ideal lol. Yeah the Bob special seems like a great canoe, but I'm going to be happy to have the extra volume and durability of my Esquif P15 for an upcoming trip.
@@kevinthewild My bob is suited to Algonquin where there is less whitewater . But at 38 lbs it's easy to portage. But even as a UL its pretty durable. Has a DOT of 800 lbs so it can carry some load . Never found early morning good for specks .If i'm up yeah i'll go out for a troll. But its normally pushing 10 am before i'm on the water .

Nice trip Kev. Thanks. How are you liking the Esquif over your Swift? - not so much the brand but the material and the difference in weight and handling. Iw as thinking of getting a canoe in a tougher lay op but nor sure if I want to deal with the extra weight. Pros and cons I guess.
I really enjoy the stability, volume and toughness of the Esquif. Even though it's stable it's also fairly maneuverable with a decent amount of rocker. It's a great do-it-all solo expedition canoe. It's slower and much heavier than a dedicated solo kevlar boat, but if you only want to own one canoe for a mix of whitewater and lake travel, I don't think there is a better choice.

What length and brand of canoe do you use? Looking at getting a lightweight canoe for wife and I and dog. Envious of your camping spots. I really enjoy your videos!!
Hey Scott. This canoe is an Esquif Prospecteur 15'. It's made in T-Formex, which is an expedition / whitewater layup. It weighs 60 lbs. If you are looking for a lightweight canoe, Kevlar is the way to go.

Excellent video! Plan on entering northern Quetico Sept. 1st for my first 10-day solo. Learn so much from watching your video. Couple questions on your cooking. I am using a combination of campfire and the little jet boil tank like yours. How long does one last? Are 2 small tanks like yours enough to take on a 10-day trip when I'll be mainly boiling water for coffee and dehydrated foods and cooking fish? Also, what do you use for oil to fry fish and how much do you generally take? Also, just curious I noticed you are switching from a double kayak to a single wooden paddle. I'm thinking you might be using the double paddle to cover more open water. Also, what length of kayak paddle are you using? I have a 250-centimeter double kayak paddle I may take not sure if it will be long enough?? Thanks so much for any info!
Hey Kyle! Regarding the fuel, I use 200g canisters. I think two of those should be sufficient to get you through a 10 day trip, as long as you are not wasteful and you block the wind to boil more efficiently. When it's windy, l use my foam pad as a wind block. I cook with olive oil simply because it's healthier. In an emergency, you can add the oil to your meal or even drink it for extra calories. Hope you have a blast on your trip!

It's the revised bugaboo pan from GSI - it now comes with a ceramic coating instead of Teflon. I'm very impressed with it so far - haven't put it in a campfire yet though.
How are you navigating by map and gps or just by maps
I use a map but I also have a topographic gps map as a backup.
