- This 5-day spring solo canoe trip in Algonquin Park had some pretty wild weather! I hope you enjoy coming along.
I had some new equipment on this trip, including a new Esquif Prospecteur 15 canoe. At 60 lbs, it's double the weight of my Swift Prospector 14' - but it allows me to carry a lot more gear, and it's made out of a very durable T-Formex layup.
My route was: Tim River Access, Tim Lake, Bob Lake, Grass Lake on Nipissing River, Rosebary Lake, Tim River Access.
Trip dates: April 19 - 23.

Algonquin Park has always been my heaven on earth and even though my interior days are over because of back and knee problems , I can re live my experiences through your videos ! It actually gives me goosebumps and brings tears to my eyes when I see your videos!! You are SO GREAT at filming and you're always so enjoyable to listen to as well. I miss Algonquin so bad but thanks to you I will never forget my times in the park ! I love these longer episodes, please don't stop , and keep going as long as your body let's you ! Kev, another great adventure and I commend you for tackling a tough route for your opening trip. I just got back yesterday from 6 days in the interior of the Park and also had a mixed bag of weather but no snow storms lol. I note how your kit is progressing, eventually we all get to the same place and double carry to have a few comforts or to have the right gear for the conditions and planned trip. Those two cheese burgers got me too thinking I should treat myself more often 🙂 The Esquif looks good rigged solo and a big change from the lightweight Swift P14 for sure. I look forward to seeing where the new boat takes you. Thanks again for editing these as Its a lot of work but your final output is always top notch. Cheers man and see you on the water one day.

Pretty hard to beat the hubba hubba. Had one for a few years. Absolutely perfect.
A connector on my carbon poles failed and it took months for me to receive a warranty replacement. I've seen others have the same issue. Justin Barbour had his fail 3 times. Aside from that it's a good tent. Just wish it had a full mesh upper (simply my preference). Thanks for the comment!

I’ve watched and enjoyed a number of your videos. I do have a thing on this video. My hard and fast rule, in the early spring, is get off the water when white caps are present. The water is always in hypothermic conditions in early spring. Then again, I’m old and maybe overly cautious. Stay safe.

Done the route a few times .And yes in some terrible winds . I use a 15 ft bob special at 37 lbs.
I’ve always wanted to try a bobs special. Wonder how it paddles in comparison to a P15.

I imagine it’s similar to a prospector 15, but a bit faster on the water and less susceptible to windage with less freeboard. 37 lbs is a nice weight 👍. I’m in Toronto.

Nice shot of those roots heaving , never seen that before!! I work outside in T.O. and April was Brutal!!!!!!! Rain / High winds / temperature all over the place, so bad I lost time and my plans for first ever spring trip in there with you at that time!! bummed out!!
Opinion... In that weather, cheap clear ski googles! cuts the cold wind from your eyes paddling and branch protection from Alder or when tearing through the bush looking for wood! One poke in the eye could really suck.
Yeah the weather and wind was wild. That's how it goes sometimes Brent. Not sure if my video confirms that it was the right decision for you to cancel your trip 😄. And I actually forgot my sunglasses in the car, they would have helped as well. But good advice 👍

Great footage. Beautifully shot. I am curious to know what your impressions of the new canoe are. I’ve had my eye on that one for a while.
I'm enjoying it so far. The obvious drawback is that it's double the weight of a solo kevlar canoe. But it feels good on the water, gives me a lot of extra space, and it's virtually indestructible - which is good for me because I am hard on my gear 😄.

just wondering if you can do a video tutorial on booking canoe lake and what would be good items to bring on my first trip?
Thank you! Backcountry reservations are fairly simple to make. Just go to the reservations section of the Ontario Parks website and select your dates and the lakes you want to camp on. I'd be happy to answer anything specific regarding gear, but I don't see it needing to be different for your first trip than any other trip. One of the most import things is to make sure you have some emergency / nighttime sleeping closed stored safely in a dry bag. Never wear those clothes during the day. That way you will always have something dry to change into, even after the wettest of days. Also, make sure your sleeping pad and sleeping bag are warm enough for the conditions.

Kevin, I realized I didn't finish watching this video from when it first came out. I was wondering if you've had a chance to use your tent a few more times. I was looking at slightly larger tent than my Big Agnes with a couple inches more headroom. I almost bought this tent ( it was on sale too!) but a few reviews mentioned water running down the fly when opened and into the tent during heavy rains. Any thoughts or experience with this?

Thank you! I wasn't concerned with any of my food spoiling given the cold temperatures on this trip. I try to keep all my food well sealed and I hang my food bag at night so that it is out of the reach of bears.

Thanks as always! I love the Swift Prospector 14'. It's super light, stable, fun to paddle, and is a perfect solo canoe for Algonquin, Killarney, Quetico. I picked up this Prospecteur 15' to be able to include some river travel in some of my trips. I am also enjoying the extra room I now have to store the extra gear I'm bringing. I'm constantly tweaking my loadouts - but that's part of the fun.

Great job capturing the difficulty of the route! Especially the “alder section” of the upper Nipissing. I did The Meanest Link last June and made a rudimentary video (making distance was priority #1 so it was mostly just a GoPro strapped to my head). We travelled from Tim Lake to the High Dam camp site in one day so your footage from day 1 to day 4 brought back a lot of memories. I actually started recognizing the route from the portage landing at Chibiabos Lake! I can only imagine how difficult it was doing this solo and in that crazy wind/cold temps! I was feeling your pain! Shoulder season trips take so much more time due to unpredictable weather. Have you ever tried neoprene gloves for paddling? I do a lot of shoulder season tripping and they have been a game changer for paddling in cold temps! Thanks for the beautiful footage of a very tough route! Cheers!
Sorry for the late reply! Just got back from an 8-day canoe trip. That's an incredible achievement Stephanie! You can be very proud of yourself for completing it! I'm going to check out your video. For something like the Meanest-Link a gopro is definitely the way to go. I'm now carrying close to 30lbs of camera related gear and batteries lol. But when I did the "Brent Run" challenge across Algonquin a few years ago all I brought was my iPhone - and the video still turned out okay in my opinion 😄
@@kevinthewild no worries! Tripping comes first! 30lb of camera gear is a lot!! That’s definitely the price to pay for your high quality videos. Kudos for doing this loop with all that extra weight (not to mention the extra work of filming it all in great detail!). I saw your Brent Run video as well. The wolf/moose footage was awesome! I’d say that video turned out better than just ok! The Brent Run is high on my list of trips I’d like to do. I’m looking forward to your next video. Cheers!

I noticed you didnt do any fishing that could help you with your food intake. Thanks for sharing by the way your not worried about bears or wolves?
These were all trout lakes, and the season was still closed at the time. For bears, I store my food safely at night, and I bring bear spray in addition to my knife.

Dude! I didn’t know you had chocolate chip pancakes! Yea.. I’ll be right over! I have a plate and that same spoon!😃. I was wondering about your bushbuddy stove. How do you like it? I have the solo lite which I know is the copy of that which I found out after I bought it😬. Anyway… I was going to ask you how you sleep at night so well? I have so much anxiety when I’m sleeping in the woods solo. Also… can you use a windscreen with your cartridge stove? I thought I read somewhere that a windscreen with those cartridge stoves will compromise the seal where you screw the stove into the tank causing a failure. I don’t know anything about them personally. I’m a twig stove nut and if it’s a rainy trip I put the trangia burner inside my firebox nano and use my homemade windscreen out of a disposable turkey roasting pan. I’ve cooked a lot of bacon on my cast iron pan with that setup on carcamping trips.
Hey.. this was an awesome watch and your vids really bring it home for me that paddling season is just around the corner. I’m a yakker…😁 I just don’t have the paddling stroke knowledge that you Canadian canoutubers possess. It’s fun watching you guys maneuver those canoes around like you do.

The Bushbuddy stove works well - probably exactly like your solo stove. It's very efficient and burns hot and fast - the only downside being that you need to constantly be feeding it. When I'm feeling tired and lazy after a long day I will usually just use the canister stove. You definitely can use a windshield, I will sometimes use my foam pad as a wind block to make it more efficient on windy days. I don't have any issues sleeping at night, but I do stay aware as I've had moose and bears approach my camp during the night. Anytime I hear something large I just shout loudly a few times from my tent and that always does the trick. Chocolate chips in my pancakes are a must until blueberry season arrives!

Wow! Panama! I've encountered bears and wolves on my trips. We are not permitted to carry firearms in Provincial and National Parks here in Canada. The black bears and wolves here are normally afraid of humans, but I bring bear spray and a knife for protection.
Juju. I think is terrible. I practice bikepacking in my country. Im afraid of coyotes , jaguar and snake. But when you are outside is great. Sorry my bad English

I thought Algonquin backcountry doesn't open until 2nd weekend in May?? I may be wrong but I recall that from my early days tripping
Every year the backcountry opens based on the office ice-out date. The Algonquin Park website announces it. They allow earlier reservations to be made if ice-out occurs before the scheduled May opening date. I believe it was April 13th this year.

Great video Kevin and the snow looks peaceful from my living room with a warm coffee in my hands. I see you have a different boat from your other videos and I am considering the same one but the other ones you used I think were lightweight Kevlar boats and this one is much beefier and heavier. I mostly do the same type of tripping as you do and very little white water but the price point on this boat matches my budget. How do you find it for portaging longer distances like 1-2km? Is it doable or do you wish for something lighter? I’d really appreciate your feedback.
Thanks Cliff. Yes my new canoe is an Esquif Prospecteur 15'. It's a great all-around canoe, but at 60lbs you will definitely feel it on the portages. If you are going to be doing mostly flat-water trips with many (or long) portages, I would still recommend a lighter composite boat. But I think it's also very dependant on the person. Some people will struggle portaging a T-Formex boat. I have to say though - it's nice not having to baby my canoe 😄.
@@kevinthewild I have to say I noticed you dragging it a lot and that almost seemed like a selling feature for me since any of the Kevlar or Carbon boats I feel you worry about damaging them or the coating and every time you go over a beaver dam or come in hard to a rocky site you worry so much about damaging it. My boat is now 55lbs and that is 60 and I am in about similar shape as you so while I wish for lighter on the 1-2km portages I also wish for more worry free maintenance over the rocks and bumps . @cliffspicer6555 well if your current boat is 55lbs then absolutely! It feels nice on the water, good balance between tracking well and maneuverability. I’m really enjoying it. And yes the price is great when compared to other options 👍
