13-Year-Old Missing 5 Days Turns Up in Hospital as ‘John Doe’

- The family of 13-year-old Nathan Torres assumed the worst after he took off on his bicycle in their California neighborhood, two days ahead of Halloween. His family, worried sick, filed a missing juvenile report with local police. Still, days passed before they knew where he was. When they finally got answers, they learned he was in an ICU. Inside Edition Digital’s Stephanie Officer has the details.
When his sister said “he’s just a baby” my heart broke. This is so so sad. All hope for healing to him and his family. ❤️ God bless.

I hope he makes a full recovery. To imagine that he could have died alone in the hospital without any family around is heart breaking. Those medical alert bracelets seem like a good idea for kids, and adults.
Parents just need to get their kids IDs when they start letting them go out alone or with friends.
@@mariespi96 well most adults go around with ID-but you do need them sometimes
@@mariespi96 hat, too! But round here, even 6 yr olds ride up n down the block. They could get round a corner and boom!
Something I've done since I was young is keep a card in my wallet that has a list of my medications, allergies, breif health background, and emergency contacts.
unfortunately i don't think a "full recovery" is going to happen with a traumatic brain injury 😢
I can't imagine how scared his family was, not knowing where he could've been for 5 days. I hate that this happened to him; However, I'm relieved that he didn't get killed and his family now knows where he is.

Stop playing the blame game. Just thank God they know where he is.
How many children his age have photo ID on them?
"The juvenile was not located due to being admitted as John Doe." isn't that usually where missing people and John Does admitted to hospitals overlap??
The police inquired for a boy. The hospital assumed what they had was an adult.
@@jaimesantos1170 What I'm curious about is, what about him looked like an adult? Or did they just assume? Sounds like the hospital didn't want to do extra work to contact authorities to look for the person's family. Even if they were an adult, the human thing to do is find a relative or maybe I'm just being to naive.
@@echung168 it’s not the hospitals responsibility to look for the relatives. Their responsibility is to take of the injuries and keep him alive. It’s the cops job to find their relatives.
Medically knowing the age is not part of the general protocol of the nurses and doctors. The kid has adult features and by those features assumptions were made. Take into consideration that he was in an accident. The cops came in and ask for any kids but they hospital assumed they had an adult.
There’s no negligence or conspiracy here.
I'm glad that the family were able to find Nathan. When I was kid, I used to wear ID bracelets that my mom got for me, then when I got to middle school and high school, I had a student ID. It's always good to have some form of identification on you, because if your phone is password protected or gets broken, it's not easy for rescuers and first responders.

The John Doe excuse for not knowing he was in a hospital is false. Any time police check hospitals for a missing person, they ALWAYS ask for John/Jane Does. They dropped the ball BIG TIME.
The problem was likely that the age of the John Doe did not match. Who would suspect a 20/21 yo John Doe was actually a missing 13 yo boy
@@rosalinaburton3061 it's policy to check anyway, especially with a "doe". They definitely dropped the ball!
Yep, my thoughts exactly! 👍🏼
@@rosalinaburton3061 that makes sense!
@@cloo6984 They checked in the sense that they called the hospital and the hospital likely reported not to have someone fitting that description. To think that police would chase down every missing case by going to a hospital and looking at a John Doe that does not match the description is utopianism. It was the police's further investigation that cracked the case. No doubt is it unfortunate but black and white thinking is very dangerous and not helpful.
She can't be blaming herself for him being alone. She has to get through that.
He was admitted as a John Doe because that specific hospital didn't have his information/records. He likely has never been to that hospital
Yeah and since he is only thirteen, he may not have an ID card that he carries everywhere saying who he is.
Still, the hospital shouldnt have named him as "John Doe", they could've leave the name as N/A, then contact authority to help identify.

It's likely whoever hit him got him to the hospital, but not many 13yr olds carry personal IDs so nobody would know who he is and since he was probably unconscious he couldn't tell them

I used to work registration for the emergency room, we only used John/Jane Doe for adult patients- minors were listed as something else & police would be notified immediately.
Since hospital staff assumed he was an adult, they labeled him as John Doe, not a minor, & police were not notified. What I don't get is why they keep saying they didn't realize it was him because he was listed as 'John Doe.' Unless they actually thought that was the man's government name, this excuse is ludicrous. A John Doe would immediately be compared to a missing persons list by any partially competent staff. That weak excuse only proves their error more.

This is why I encourage anyone who experiences this (a loved one/friend gone missing) to contact hospitals and jails/prisons in the area at the earliest possible moment.
This is horrible but imagine the relief of finding your loved ones alive. Some never find their lost ones again. I pray he will make a full recovery 🙏
God bless and protect this young man and his family. Positive thoughts, healing energy and prayer. 🙏🏾

You got this man, don't give up and just fight through!
This kid needs a hug🥺
Prayers for a speedy, and complete recovery. How aweful not knowing where your child is, or what he has been going through .
Thank goodness the officer recognized him, and got ahold of the family.

I am a brain injury survivor. Never underestimate the power of Prayer and the ability of a young person to recover even from a very serious injury. I'm praying for thus young man and his family.
How the hell do you confuse a 13 year old for a 21 year old? This situation is all kinds of messed up. I hope he makes it out okay.
Sometimes teens look like grown adults.Thares this one kid in my second poird class and he’s like 6 feat tall
Thanks to the officer who reconnected him with his family.❤️
Prayers to the family, just devastating all around.

Donations to the family! the kid needs money for the rehabilitate!!!!! Did the police find person who hit him????

Wishing this boy a full recovery and fully-functioning brain once again. His family has him back physically, but they have a long, expensive road ahead of them.
I hope the boy ends up being OK after going through all this. He needs a miracle. 🙏

Praying for him and his family. Has anyone heard of an update about his surgery or how he is doing at all??
This just popped in my recommendation... Can't find any updates at all..
It’s only been a month since this has been posted, update may take a little while
He’s awake. Considering the damage to his brain and having multiple surgeries now we’re not sure what his outcome will be cognitively or what he will be capable of but he’s on his way to recovery🤍
I refuse to believe no one at the hospital has dealt with "John Doe" cases before. Finding out who that kid is is SOMEONE'S job. Maybe with the COVID crisis, the information got lost in the shuffle.
So like the 11 O'clock news didn't mention a situation of someone who was apparently hit by a car and since nobody knew his name asks the public to help?? That's just frickin weird!
