    • @awesomewill9283

      I don't really think so. I sense there's a level of narcissism from his sophistication, which actually I believe is shown to its ultimate extent in these videos. Personally, I believe he is a hoarder who fabricates his 'genius' from other sources, not a genius who creates. But that is my view.

      Mh, never really saw him as a narcissist. Interesting point but could you explain your view? As to the "hoarder who fabricates his 'genius' from other sources", I feel like this is a common trait among people who just want to know how exactly the world works. He researches and publishes collected data in an entertaining package, which I believe to be a good RUclips video. There is no genius here, just good vocabulary and organized thoughts that come from reliable sources.
      Just curious on the narcissist part of your statement.

    • @vornamenachname2727
      @vornamenachname2727 7 лет назад +11

      Around The World Yeah, he really is *only* taking information and publish it, but he makes it entertaining and he knows what he is talking about (not Buzzfeed). You could call him smart (varies from definition). He is also aware what people are thinking about him and prois of himself. You can misunderstand it as a little bit of narcissism.

    I’m not even close to lying when I said I’d love to meet and talk to Dave more than almost any other person.
    His rationale and methodical thoughts are fascinating in itself, but the fact that it comes from a place of true curiosity. Whether if about himself or others he’s able to think about things in a rationale way without being from a lack of emotion or emotional consciousness.
    I find it absolutely fascinating to watch!
    Incase you read this Dave,
    I really admire you. I admire your purpose when it comes to videos and your true curiosity of the way the mind works in your own and others lives. just found the video, since i lost my job due to corona i have not gotten anything done at all in 3 months. i just made a commitment contract with my welfare money on the line (a smaller amount, each failure would cost me roughly 20% of the months income).
      thanks to our country allowing you to have 60-80% of your income for 300 days when you get fired i've done nothing but procrastinate then feel bad about doing nothing.
      the 300 day thing is an amazing safety net, but it's not something that is good for me at least due to becoming "too comfortable" too easily.

    I think I have some good advice for anyone trying to find that motivation to get to work AND love their work. Think about WHY you enjoyed doing the things you used to enjoy doing. Example: if you used to love playing video games but now hate them, try to think of WHY exactly you loved them. Was it competition? Was it graphic arts? Was it the virtual adventures? There's a hundred different possible reasons as to why a person will pursue a certain interest, you need to find your specific reason for doing so. Figuring this out will tell you what your core values are. All employers for big jobs will try to see if you match their company's values and if you don't you won't be hired, so don't tell me that values and passions don't exist because I've experienced them myself. Be full of yourself, be obsessed with your egotistical values, DON'T be arrogant, but be in love with yourself while respecting others.

    • @nickpastorino5370
      @nickpastorino5370 8 лет назад +11

      When I doubted myself and lost track of what I valued, I took on the values of other people; I became humble because everyone around me told me to be. I focused on money, attention, and sex because everyone else valued those things, and then one day I developed major depressive disorder. That's not the only reason I became clinically depressed, but it was a HUGE contributing factor. Don't be restricted by societies rules or morals, what do you really want?

Boyinaband has no control over his consequences, becaus his sister "has" his money. If he failed his plan, then his Sister could easily donate the money to scientology and Boyinaband couldn't do anything about it. You understand? Sorry my english isn't the best :/

    I have a way to help you feel more confident:
    Step 1- sit for 5 to 10 minuets every day and just turn off your brain
    Step 2- write down 3 things you like about yourself that has nothing to do with your looks
    Step 3- when you think negatively about yourself, think, “ would I say that to my best friend? Would I say that to my family?”
    Step 4- do this everyday for at least a month if you have time, and if it doesn’t work, you can stop. If it works, I think it’s a good way to stay positive

      I don't agree with step 3. From personal experience, when the school counsellor told me to ask myself that question, I just looked at her and said "I don't know". If you knew the way out of your problem, you would be done it by now, and adding the caring inventive most people have to help a friend or family member doesn't always work. Also, it's puts a focus on helping and caring about others more than helping yourself, when You're the focus of the conversation.
      For example, you go to someone for advice on your issue with procrastinating on homework/work. They say "well, what advice would you give a friend?". The expected reply is "I'd tell them to do it when they have free time". Procrastinators don't have "free time". The concept doesn't exist in their mind. They have work time... which trails off into procrastinating, and stress out time. So the real answer is "I dont know how to help them". Because it's not their friend's problem. It's theirs.
      I do like your first 2 steps, however, keeping a consistent daily ritual of meditating and pointing out a few things that you like about yourself can eventually either feel too forced or you'll fall off the bandwagon and stop this daily ritual.
      Self compassionate discipline and habit reformation (changing bad habits into good ones), which is my current experiment, may help some. A commitment contract may help others. It depends on the structure of the person's deep psychology; how a person was raised and treated as a baby and child determining their adult behaviour.

    I need a commitment contract, because my brain refuses to do anything that requires effort, unless someone with power over me is watching. For example I can't force myself to do math homework unless it's easy or the teacher is in the same room as me. Same thing goes for multiple other school subjects.
    But there's a problem in the commitment contract and it's that I don't know anyone who I could ask to be my "teacher" because I'm not intimidated by my friends.

      Pushing through the start of an uncomfortable situation is a learned skill. Of course some people are more naturally gifted and some with ADHD will really really struggle. Improvement is always seen with practice. A useful trick is to set an alarm on your phone telling you to do something. And no matter what you are doing break your routine to do that thing. It's a great way to practice this productive mentality without the associated pressure.

In the end I finished the studies not for myself but out of fear that I will be laughed at for dropping out. Got masters degree the same way. After two years of work I left the job and am jobless for 6 months already. Knowing that this type of contract isn't cutting it for me, my saved up money are running out so I guess I'll be getting some other job soon to keep my apartment bills paid, but I'd like to have a different kind of motivation >_>

    A few years ago I thought this was a really brilliant idea, but now that I'm 3 years older and a bit more knowledgeable, I recognize that this experiment would never work on it's own.
    If you've got a pattern, habit and history of depression and despondency- following through the schedule you've made here might appear to help for a little while, but it'll never stick. There's a blend of psychology and neurology at play... like.. you build up neural pathways that get stronger, say more lubricated over time. The process of changing those patterns is a matter of rewiring your brain through psychotherapy.
    It's fuckin' complicated man, but very doable and definitely possible. Mostly it's important to have patience and compassion for yourself as the road to changes like these is long and slow- being upset with yourself for still dealing with whatever issues you've got (I don't really know how this all plays out for you) isn't helpful, remember that you're doing your best, even when your best is just barely remembering why you want to change your coping mechanisms.

    basically, the way a human brain finds happiness is by solving problems. when i was rly depressed in uni, i tried helping people by solving their problems or at least listening to them, being there as a support. it turned out to be pretty good for a while, but then it wasn't enough. what helped me mostly is trying to solve my problems, the things i've been ignoring for years. it was the only thing that worked. i wasn't being productive during that period because i was trying to find out the reasons beyond my depression. i started by remembering my up-bringing and my life. i know now where my anxiety comes from. i know why i feel like a big failure. it was just then, that i could chill and find myself strong again.

    I actually thought this video was brilliant. A really cool idea, though difficult to implement. I can totally relate to this issue: the struggle to be motivated, to be productive, to stick to the plans and schedules.
    I wonder if there's some way to make some software or an app to monitor, gauge and encourage this kind of system. I know there are "life planner" software/apps, but I mean something different, something that can be posted online for others to see, or for an AI to check to make sure that the user is actually following the schedule. Otherwise it's just another glorified calendar that will be inevitably ignored.

I struggle to get work done if the deadline is fuzzy, I waste a lot of my precious time doing nothing important. This has been awful and lately it has really made me crash emotionally. Literally has been used to express non literal things for hundreds of years. it's not wrong. it's just grammatically confusing. It is literally the worst thing in the world when people fail to recognise that exaggeration is a tool of language. Sometimes the sender could have conveyed a message better but sometimes the receiver should have recognised emphasis or metaphor. Language is descriptive not prescriptive. Sometimes literally means figuratively. Have a nice day.

    I'll see things like this and at first it makes me feel motivated and inspired to try it, but then my doubt sets in. I'll point things out like how I don't have the resources currently or I'll push it off further (seeing as I'm still in high school it's usually into adulthood). I can't tell if it's me procrastinating again or me just finding something that won't work. Maybe both?

    • @Butevv
      @Butevv 8 лет назад +3

      I feel the same. I thought about how wonderful it would be if I managed to do this and stick to a routine and get things done, but I'm in high school, I don't have anything to lose and I don't have anyone willing to keep me in check. I'm starting to worry about my future and how I'm going to study for our upcoming exams etc.

    • @weatherkarl
      @weatherkarl 8 лет назад +3

      MsButev I think because I really don't have the materials or time to do this, I won't. However, I think maybe we if we modify the experiment a little we could do it. Like maybe try positive reinforcement. I know it didn't work for David, but if it works try it. Some sort of treat system? Maybe get a friend or family member to check it or if you don't think you can depend on one person try multiple.

    • @Butevv
      @Butevv 8 лет назад +2

      Cha Cha Boedigheimer That's a good idea. I might try it but I'm not sure it will work as well as if I had a risk of losing something. I don't have enough to lose for this to work is the problem. I'll definitely give your version a go, though :)

    Where do I get 10.000 quid from to potentially donate to Scientology so that I can try the same?
    But seriously, very impressive. As someone who is also prone to depression I can relate to this. What helps me best is to get distracted by learning about things. Anything. Als long as I can keep focussing on it it'll do great.

    Feeling more relaxed than happy. Yeah that's about right.
    As a depressed person, i can say that i see happiness and unhappiness as a number line, with positive 1-10 as happy and negative 1-10 as unhappy. As long as I'm not in negatives, i consider myself to be in a happy state even when I'm not thrilled and giggly and smiling all the time as that's not reasonable to maintain.
    A generally positive mood is the "happy" that depressed people seek. Anything to stay out of the constant 4-10 negative numbers.
    And i think that view of happiness is a good one to have for everyone.
    "I'm not smiling enough i should be happier" is just as toxic a mindset as "I'm worthless i should give up".
    When you see neutral (-3 through +3 on the number line) as bad, then all you're doing is making more negatives for yourself. instead of 10 positive numbers there's now 7 that you feel are worth anything.
    If people can accept contentment as a form of happiness then the world would be a more positive place. :3

But do you really want to support people like this just cause you fail in something? Just imagine the Westboro church would start a campaign with this money, they are going to be able to discriminate and hurt people cause you donated money. I don't think it's worth it

      He had to find something that really worked. I get the idea that stuff like "self humiliation" Or "just throwing the money into a pit" or anything that would actually only hurt him wouldn't be a good enough motivator. He seems to care more about being a positive effect more than being seen as impressive, dig. Not only that he doesn't seem to care about negative influences that are more superficial but rather real practical negative effects. The motivation HAS to reflect that. So the fix is really just.... succeed. Practice makes permanent. After the first few weeks it shouldn't be too big a deal.

    How long will the threat of losing the money hang over you? It's good that your body and mind will now have a routine, but when does the "contract expire"?

    • @Raggedyredwood
      @Raggedyredwood 8 лет назад +14

      I was thinking the same thing. If the contract expires, (I don't know about him, but) I would slip back into my old un-productive habits. But you can't have $10,000 to scientology looming over your head forever. I used to be able to be productive but after going to my arts highschool/boarding school, It's hard over summer break. My school is very structured and longer than a normal school day since it includes music classes, and this means it effects my "making things" too. I no longer have a focus on my music from the classes or motivation to practice from a concert deadline. Now I've spent most of my summer playing video games and scrolling down various social media and seriously beating my self up over it to the point I numb my own hate out and continually don't do anything. I'm not really sure if I could make a commitment contract like him, but I'm going to use this site blocker to block social media and sites that distract me until I'm done with my daily goals, I also might try using the RescueTime app he has.

    The problem is that depressed people view happiness so much farther away than it is. Daily routines as simple as this can bring a scuicidal person out of depression. I was suicidal for a year and, even though my life is worse now, doing shrooms saved me
