I don't think it should ever be just called "Internet addiction". The Internet is huge and can be used in many ways. Social media, gaming and other forms of entertainment are what actually cause the addictions, and those addictions can have quite different characteristics. And remember, stuff like gaming and video streaming don't even necessarily require the Internet.
Been having problems with this sort of thing but your youtube instead of Facebook or some other shitty social media. Actively procrastinating and being distracted extremely easily are a big problem of mine and I would love it to change, but I find it really hard to do so.
I have been purposely avoiding this video because I don't want to believe Internet addiction is a thing but finally a year later I am watching it and I think it's a good video with strong evidence.
It's always so weird when people say that when you are on the internet too long it makes you hate your appearance. I'm totally fine with my appearance and I'm able to love myself without make up on and without wearing fancy clothes. However what brings my self esteem down the most is when I start to realize just how hateful people are/ can be when you make a small mistake and I start questioning my abilities and skills. I constantly feel like there is competition all around me and I'm the one coming in last all the time. I feel like I have no talent to contribute to the society and I'm kind of a waste of space.
Arcticsnowfox Yeah, but if people ackowledged that then they probably had to take a look at themselves and reevaluate how their actions affect others, blaming everything on technology is way more fun!
Arcticsnowfox Anecdotal, you may not be affected by it (even then how do you know? ), doesn't mean lots of other people are not. We know this happens subconsciously and not consciously. Also, yes, we know being torn down constantly will reduce ones self esteem. This is why when people tell you words don't have any power they're wrong. We know they do we know that if someone tells you you are worthless long enough, you will start to believe it. It doesn't matter how strong you are eventually you will be eroded.
Stop putting stock in what other people think or say, specifically people to whom you aren't close. I know the whole "I don't give a fuck" thing is cliche as hell, but it's honestly true. If you let other people tear you down about (insert subject), it's bc you yourself are not happy with it either. If you're truly happy with (insert aforementioned subject), no one will ever be able to tear you down about it, bc their opinion ceases to matter. As soon as you stop relying on others to define yourself, you'll be just fine.

Fear of missing out (FOMO) is a social anxiety stemmed from the belief that others might be having fun while the person experiencing the anxiety is not present. It is characterized by a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fear_of_missing_out Sources are marked and linked to on the page ;)
How person cured internet addiction: 1. sold house and every electronic device in persons ownership 2. buys shed deep in the Himalayas and lives for 420 years until person dies trying to recreate an i-phone using rocks and other minerals in the Himalayas.
I can tell when he's happier when he adds something totally unnecessary yet funny. It's like he's stopped stressing about whether we think the content is perfect and just flows with whatever makes himself happy.
i feel like my internet usage is linked with my depression. whenever i am feeling depressed or suicidal i go on tumblr or youtube to help discract me or get help.
thetruepineapple thats why we should try and get new hobbies. something that will calm us down that isnt addictive(im the same, thats why im saying we). you know what? i think ill start drawing more. need to practice it. and listening to music also helps a lot
+thetruepineapple I don't know if I'm depressed or what but often I feel like shit and I found that caring for some plants I got helps a little. I love watering them and seeing them grow. Thinking that my actions help them grow strong makes me happy, or at least less shitty lol. The problem is a couple plants don't need much care, so to make it a hobby you need at least a little garden or balcony
I am a person on the autism spectrum and I found social media really useful in helping me connect with other people where in real life I would have a more difficult time with it. Due to bullying, I am often weary of other people in real life and find myself not able to REALLY talk to people, don't know if it is due to my autism or the bullying I have experienced. I am now just starting to become more healthy and active, trying to gain a social life after being fucked over so many times by people. I also depend on the internet because I have an independant business and I often try to advertise myself on places like Facebook.
SpiderWomanWhoWearSensibleClothes I'm glad you're trying to get a social life again. I understand it must be hard but every step you take is a good one! there's nothing wrong with using the internet for information or business purposes, even some relaxation is fine, just try not to be too dependant on it.
SpiderWomanWhoWearSensibleClothes Our situations are similar, although mine is due to both bullying and not being able to connect to people who don't share my interests, as well as living in a rather isolated area. Social media has helped me find like-minded people and even meet up with them, and as such I'm starting to make more friends. I also share my video game playthroughs, complete with commentary.
Fwiw, I had to look in places like Meetup in order to find people who seem cool. I still get a bit of anxiety whenever I go to an event by myself. I was always the "loner" type. I am also doing community stuff too which is also great.
SpiderWomanWhoWearSensibleClothes i got bullied for 4 years during primary school and now think that everybody is talking about me at all time now I made some friends in secondary school and am quite happy now. most of the time. but I still cannot trust people any more because everybody turned their backs on me and stabbed me in my back. I don't get emotionally attached to anybody any more I'm hardly emotionally attached to my family and that makes me feel really bad because I know that I should feel emotional towards my family. I think that might have went really confusing near the end.
SpiderWomanWhoWearSensibleClothes I so get that! I have autism, and also PTSD from bullying. Next to that I also have asthma and Crohn's disease. So next to having a lot of social issues, I also can't hold a job and am sick at home a lot. It makes socialising nearly impossible. I used to play a lot of MMORPGs, just to be able to chat with people and walk and jump around. It did almost turn into a serious addiction though, where I could spend 12 hours in one MMORPG in a single day... Luckily the game had a system built in where it warns you when you play too much. I quickly deleted the game. I still needed the social interaction though, so I went on social media. This was great! I met like-minded people, who pointed me to events in my interests. I had very little energy, but going to an event an average of once every 3 months was doable. I found awesome friends there, who were happy to stay in touch online, meet up every once in a while and who also attend these events. Later I was one of three founders of a local weekly meeting by and for people with autism. We created a safe space to just hang out and socialise, while having people around you who get it if socialising doesn't come naturally. This weekly meeting by and for people with autism hasn't just helped me out tremendously, but also a lot of our visitors. Even some visitors who never had friends, were able to find friends at this meeting, and learn how to keep the contact going, simply by trial and error with understanding people. Now I have lovely friends who are very understanding of my disabilities, a great volunteering job and the knowledge that I'm helping others with similar problems as well. I love my volunteering job.
Excellent video as always. A lot of what you said was on point. I really do need to cut down on the amount of time I spend online (or at least be more active, I spend most of my time lurking).
I keep getting distracted by your hair and thinking I want bright red in my hair too and it's really annoying because what you are talking abt is extremely interesting and I love your channel.. and your hair.

"Oh so maybe I should reduce the amount of time I spend using the internet, as this sounds like it would be applicable to me." *Immediately opens twitter on phone*
I think that we really should distinguish between social media addiction and internet addiction. And (online) gaming addiction is another topic altogether...
I do actually have an internet addiction. My parents once locked my laptop in a case to get it away from me. I actually picked the lock, despite having never picked a lock before. Then, they put parental controls on my laptop, which I hacked through. Then, they finally hid it somewhere I couldn't find it, and I refused to do anything, and didn't eat anything healthy until they gave it back. It's really not okay.
i wish he was like, my teacher or something. he can talk about anything all day i will never get tired of his voice.. ugh. (and i'm so glad i'm not addicted to the internet. still depressed, though)
The thing about the "Would you rather have internet access or basic utilities?" Is that with internet access, you can get those basic utilities. But you can't get internet access with those basic utilities. So yeah, I'd also pick internet access.
I'm commenting this because it makes me statistically happier than just reading the comments.

Fear of missing out (FOMO) is a social anxiety stemmed from the belief that others might be having fun while the person experiencing the anxiety is not present. It is characterized by a desire to stay continually connected with what others are doing.

Hey are you addicted to the internet? Use the internet to find out
*The more you know*
LOL

Lol..
I mean you're not gonna find that shit in a book
Seeing the fact "Commenting makes me statistically happier than just scrolling" makes me smile more than it should
How person cured internet addiction:
1. sold house and every electronic device in persons ownership
2. buys shed deep in the Himalayas and lives for 420 years until person dies trying to recreate an i-phone using rocks and other minerals in the Himalayas.
420 years?
yes
That was some top notch scoffing right there dave, I'm proud of you

I’m addicted to your vids I have been watching the for 3 hours today while doing my daily work
You seem happier. Makes me happy.
Mauritz Nyfeldt I noticed this too
I agree ! It made me happier too to see him like that :)
I can tell when he's happier when he adds something totally unnecessary yet funny. It's like he's stopped stressing about whether we think the content is perfect and just flows with whatever makes himself happy.
Entertaining and cares about sources? My goodness

The source safe zone.
Ahh.
I got a 45, i am "possibly" addicted
I know it's a rare species of internet dwellers
You're my new therapist. 😊
Exactly
I ain't gonna lie i spend about 27 hours a day on social media according to a test i took
Sounds accurate
i feel like my internet usage is linked with my depression. whenever i am feeling depressed or suicidal i go on tumblr or youtube to help discract me or get help.
thetruepineapple omg same with my anxiety and panic attacks, youtube helps me so much
thetruepineapple thats why we should try and get new hobbies. something that will calm us down that isnt addictive(im the same, thats why im saying we). you know what? i think ill start drawing more. need to practice it. and listening to music also helps a lot
That Kenyan Llama sometimes it doesnt help, but i still rely on it somehow
+thetruepineapple I don't know if I'm depressed or what but often I feel like shit and I found that caring for some plants I got helps a little. I love watering them and seeing them grow. Thinking that my actions help them grow strong makes me happy, or at least less shitty lol. The problem is a couple plants don't need much care, so to make it a hobby you need at least a little garden or balcony
Lowlandweller _ i only have one houseplant and its currently dying lmao
I don't use facebook or instagram but i just can't stop watching RUclips
Jars SAME! I don't use Instagram a whole lot but, RUclips? Oh my, I'm definitely addicted
Jars. Me 2
Jars u missing 1 minuet of slimes or animals lol

SpiderWomanWhoWearSensibleClothes
i got bullied for 4 years during primary school and now think that everybody is talking about me at all time
now I made some friends in secondary school and am quite happy now. most of the time. but I still cannot trust people any more because everybody turned their backs on me and stabbed me in my back.
"Sorry I didn't mean to worry you." has to be the funniest line I've heard all day.
Fucking love that you incorporate science, referencing articles and dumb humor. You're like my spirit animal
Grante yes, he's probably the only RUclipsr including science in his videos and still managing to make it enjoyable!

Ayam Avopop i feel like this applies to most people with an internet connection. (me too) its pretty sad that we've come to this but its the truth
No. I lie a lot, however I do not believe that I am. (Though I guess that doesn't help my case, does it? Whatever.)
That's because you basically had something stolen from you, and the natural human reaction is to want it back.
You just sound like a spoilt brat to me. (I was one myself)
Well, I'm not gonna deny that.
Dave: Do i look like a girl to you?

The thing about the "Would you rather have internet access or basic utilities?" Is that with internet access, you can get those basic utilities. But you can't get internet access with those basic utilities. So yeah, I'd also pick internet access.
