  • On 22 February, 1943 three members of the White Rose Resistance were executed by guillotine. The White Rose were a peaceful resistance movement in Germany during World War 2, they distributed leaflets in and around the university of Munich informing people of the truth of what was going on under the Nazi regime at the time. In 1943, fourteen members of this peaceful organisation were rounded up, found guilty of treason and beheaded by guillotine.
As part of his ‘Random History’ series, Kevin Hicks tells the little known, tragic story of a young brother and sister, Sophie and Hans Scholl and their friend Christoph Probst.

That's a pretty grim story & we should never forget how evil the Nazis were.
Those White Rose people showed breath taking courage in standing up for the truth.
To fight without weapons, with nothing other than your heart felt convictions in the face of the entire state & pay the ultimate price is beyond any type of gallantry that I can think of.
That level of bravery, should be made known as widely as possible.

I would also add the Soviets and the Chinese Communists to that list. Murder as a policy of the state. Nothing new really. We know her name and she and her brother and friends are not forgotten, There where millions that were murdered by the NAZI's and the Soviets. Murder as a state policy is nothing new, My father still had relatives in Poland that made the 144 mile train ride to KL Auschwitz-Birkenau. My mothers side, nothing after September 1, 1939- I think they was in the Soviet zone and was sent to one of the camps in Siberia. I been looking for them. It's tough when you don't speak Polish and very poor Russian. We see the same sort of callous disregard for people in Ukraine in 2022. Kevin, you make it very, very hard to find an appropriate comment with a bit of humor in it. I think one of the great but largely unrecognized lessons of what happened in Germany was the impact of a large scale imposition of PTSD on those who served in the trenches. This, of course, would have been present on both sides, but it makes a great deal of difference to walk away from the experience as the victor and not the loser. It was indeed very fortunate that the West took a great deal of care after WWII not to rub the German's noses into the mud after the war, and Germans in general who served in that war were allowed to keep more self respect about themselves after their failure to win the war. . That this happened though had a lot more to with the Cold War than it did with any great and high-minded generosity and forgiveness in the West, but it certainly worked out much better in any case.

Just think about it, those poor parenys (who were quite anti-Nazi themselves) saw four of their children perish, three of them as a result of the regime (Sophie's brother Werner was killed in action). Plus when I went to visit family in Germany two years ago I went to that cemetery. I could have walked past but never really looked. I thank you for telling their story. Hats off to them.

I've been aware of Sophie, Hans and Christof for a number of years. I read a biography of Sophie and there's a German film about them. It's very hard to watch. Sophie's last word as the blade fell was "Freiheit!"...freedom. there's a memorial to the White Rose in Munich. It consists of the anti- Nazi leaflets they gave out which have been covered over with toughened glass or plastic. It's a shame that the victorious nations don't know about these brave German resistors. There were many of them who risked their lives smuggling Jewish children out of the country or hiding Jewish families. I appreciate you bringing this to our attention.

A story of the executioner would fit in very well on your channel. The story of Johann Reichhart, known as a 'gentleman' executioner like British executioner Albert Pierrepoint due to their compassion, professionalism and concern for the well being of the condemned. In Reichhart's case he wanted long drop gallows instead of the short drop because it was known to be more humane (if such an execution device can be) but his request was refused and he customised the guillotine tables to make them faster to operate to minimise the stress on the condemned.
Ironically he was employed by the US after the war to hang German war criminals.
This is a fascinating story I believe you could tell very well Kevin...

Thank you Mr. Hicks for honoring these courageous young people, who put their lives to risk for the matter of truth.
Many schools in Germany are named after Sophie and Hans Scholl „Geschwister Scholl Schule“. In 2010 it were 188 schools and there are still more to come. Good so.
One single person who in 1939 planned a bomb assault on Hitler is much less known: the joiner Georg Elser. His plan didn’t work, because Hitler left the „Bürgerbräukeller“ too early. His story is worth telling, too. Though he took to violent means of resistance, different than the peaceful White Rose students, he saw the necessity to act against the Nazi regime and also risked and finally lost his life for the sake of freedom.

I had heard that the Red Chinese would charge the family of an executed prisoner for the cost of the bullet used, but this pettiness transcended that gesture, intended to drive home on those who had suffered the loss an additional administrative cost... However, this is how such regimes operate. They dehumanize their victims, and add humiliation to the lingering threat against anyone else who might find the courage even to speak up against them. One might wonder if the young people today still have among them such courageous souls as Sophie and Hans Scholl and Christoph Probst. ='[.]'=

I knew about the White Rose movement. I find it interesting in that it occurred in the “birthplace “ of national socialism.
There is a later incident of the guillotine’s use, after France put theirs away in 1964. After the Vietnam War, a communist official went around in the central highlands with a portable guillotine, passing out death sentences in villages.
Thanks for another eminently watchable show. 👍

One little thing: You're saying that she was buried at the "Friedhof cemetary". I think that either i'm understanding it incorrectly or that there was a translation error, because "Friedhof" is actually the german word for cemetary

We like to think that these sort of things are just events from our less civilised past, but sadly innocent people like these three are still dying all over the world every day for daring to stand up against brutal regimes and corruption. How many others paid the price with the ultimate sacrifice throughout the ages in order to inspire others to take a stand. RIP all the forgotten brave people whos names we'll never know.

      Hi Chris, thanks for watching.
Yes, you're right, it was used in France up until 1977. The last public execution in France was ironically of a German serial killer, that took place in 1939. The crowd treated it as a carnival day out and the authorities thought it wasn't in good keeping, so they moved the executions indoors.
