      I'm not sure I agree with this idea. You don't have to jump off a bridge to know that jumping off a bridge is a bad idea. You don't have to set your hair on fire to know that playing with matches is a bad idea. And as for the arena, try listening to the person who is kicking ass rather than the person getting his ass kicked.

      @@baja1988_Texas Before you find your way and are able to "kick a$$" in the arena, you will first get your a$$ kicked... we are talking about life here... and no one can claim to be a master at it. And for your examples of jumping off a bridge or setting your hair on fire, they don't fit what we are talking about here. She simply meant, if you are not able to get your hands dirty or you haven't gone through what I'm going through right now, don't sit on your comfy couch trying to tell me what to do. That being said, a better example would be a single person trying to give marital advice to a married person. Until you are in it or have been in it, you don't know what it's actually like despite what people tend to think.

      @@baja1988_Texas From my perspective, having listened to her entire presentation, yours was a particularly weird response to that comment. I think you missed the whole point. I'm kind of guessing you're not somebody who really puts themselves out there vulnerably. Otherwise, you would get it.

    I am an elementary school counselor doing my best to translate these lessons so our children have this information earlier in their lives. #mypurpose

      It would be so much more beneficial if we all learned this young it would reduce so many societal ills and mental illnesses. Instead we have to go back as adults and do the hard work of letting go of our "survival" defense mechanisms that no longer serve us and probably have caused us turmoil for many years and relearn the truth by practice, hard work, dedication, perseverance, etc. Instead of taking algebra I would have definitely benefited more from this information in my formative years. It needs to be taught in schools because even if parents aren't covertly abusive and cruel and unintentionally teaching their kids messages of shame, secrecy, silence, strength in moving on, embarrassment at home or cultural message etc. I am going to say from my personal experience my parents left lasting scars from silence, secrecy, lack of vulnerability, lack of empathic responses, trying to soothe by making the emotion go away so it became extremely hard and terrifying to self-soothe still learning to and more brushing away "negative emotions" because they were too difficult to handle due to lack of emotional immaturity on both their parts and trying to always save face. I want the generational cycle to end with me and this is a lot of work but I'm determined for my 4 year old daughter and myself.

    Her ability to target such core primordial places of human suffering and normalize these often dismissed everyday emotions is astounding. Shame and vulnerability have become the backbone of my clinical work with most my clients thx to her profound insight. Ty

    Her works is so popular of course because we haven't been taught it, except the biggest reason it is so popular is because of the person she is. Great talker, very personable, very funny and entertaining, humble, brave, showing us her vulnerability, and making us feel alive and loved and capable of loving, and like she is sitting and having coffee with us. Very down to earth and friendly.

    You respond to an uncomfortable situation with empathy and understanding when the story comes up. You not only present yourself that way, but you also try to see the other person and understand that the behaviour of others is not a reflection of you.

    Thanks for sharing Brené Brown's work. Criticism from the 'cheep seats' is a common experience that I have experienced in my work with people. The advice of not engaging in interactions with others who are not willing to 'get into the arena' by showing up being vulnerable is key - it is simply a wasteful use of time and results in painful experiences. I believe others do this because they are defended, fearful of engaging in the arena and feel a false sense of safety trying to change others rather than looking at themselves. Like Brené Brown's research suggests, the act of showing up in a constructive way involves vulnerability - the courage it takes to show up with Self.

    Thank you. I needed this. I'm rumenating about a work project that I need to close because the next step is bringing it to mgmt for approvals. Terrified of them going against me as this will be significant cost to business. Just realised that all the projects that I do, put me in the arena. I'm now prepared. Going to get this project tracked through for closure in the next two weeks 😊 Also just realised that the projects that I do benefit the business not me. Yes I learn and grow from them but I don't mandate them.

    OMG! While you were talking my SFD about a situation that I’m in now, and when I stopped to listen to you, all of a sudden another story came to me. One that is closer to the truth and about me not about the whole situation. It was a major revelation That I’ve had before but this time I wrote it down. Now maybe I can actually look at it instead of dismissing it. Thank you so much and yes it’s hard.

    I think you are wonderful and I I'm in such agreement and so appreciative of what you have to say. I've thought about these exact notions. I love the way you have organized the wording so that it makes sense and it actually becomes a story and you actually are helping others way more than you realize. Denzel Washington said in the last few years I'm not sure exactly when but it was a speech to graduating seniors at an Ivy League school I think it was Yale. And he said some similar things, one of them that really hit me when you said was he said that parents too often tell their children that they should always have something to fall back on, and he said don't worry about having something to fall back on if you're going to fall, fall forward! And this is just another way of saying what you say about showing up and "doing you" will always make you the object of critique, whether good or bad, but you're doing what you are naturally, and what your inner voice tells you and has always told you to purge...as you put it. And basically it's the same concept: if you're going to fail make sure that it's because you have tried exactly what it is you wanted to do and u have tried so hard that you are exhausted and that's why you're falling forward! But you took me on a much deeper path, and it was an invaluable lesson by showing me a path I've never really seen on my own, just little pieces of the path but you made it a clear path you cleared all the leaves and branches away and gave me a whole new way to look at the willingness. And I'm definitely someone who needs to stop worrying about why people might not understand me fully and how lately I feel that no one likes me or values me the way I used to feel. Yet I'm being more of who I am now than I ever have been I have found the courage to just really be myself but I need to show up now. I have to figure out how to do that. At least I am good at laughing at myself and definitely not afraid to be vulnerable. But I'm procrastinating and not showing up. Thank you for clarifying a picture for me. I have a feeling it will help me as I struggle through the next phase of my life.

      serendipidus1 I would like to challenge your thought pattern as it relates to being vulnerable and courage. Courage and vulnerability came into my own personal life when I decided to apply for a job that would move me and my daughter 2 hours away from a family I had been connected to for 30+ years. That same family saying I shouldn’t move for the job or move their grandchild, what makes you think you can make it or even do that job. Those critics come from your own family friends. Then they also come from people on your job when you have the courage to apply for a promotion and they say, “what makes you think you can do that job” why would you want to go over in that department they work too hard”. Being vulnerable to take the risk of getting it wrong has taught me the ways of not to do things and has built my strength and courage muscle. Didn’t say it always feels good but so worth it.

    All my life I've been asking alot of the same questions that Brene Brown keeps bring up about her on going challenges of trying to socially to fit in and be accepted and feel good about ones self. Here in this interview, she she keeps saying , "belonging to yourself" and using this phrase to give herself a "gut" check in order to focus who she really is all about "socially". This is OK and should really matter to you the most when learning and facing life's challenges; whether its getting to know people, educating yourself or learning about others. I can understand ,where she coming from, and how we can learn about ourselves . This is powerful self analysis.

    Great talk. Loved that Chase mentioned "why aren't' we given these tools early in life?" It should be a required course throughout school. I believe adults would be better equipped to handle their lives.

      Not so sure I would have listened early in life for 2 reasons:
      1. I didn't think I needed them. You can't force water into a man who doesn't think he's thirsty
      2. I thought all this talk was hogwash.
      Nothing like some traumatic events to make me realize that I am needy (and that's ok) and there are some better ways of dealing with life

    My favorite was authenticity Oprah and Brenee got though to me just the two talking together really made me hear what they were saying and understand how easy I do fake it not even realizing it until I’m already done or in the middle of it not knowing how to get out!
