My wife and I went to this game on a whim. We flew down from New York for the weekend when we heard tickets were available. Ended up about 20 rows up at the third base dugout for a reasonable price. It was back when real fans could afford to attend playoff games.
This was the last of the Columbus Day afternoon LCS games, which became a bit of a tradition when the LCS expanded to a best-of-seven. Back in the 80s every state celebrated Columbus Day as a federal holiday and everyone was off school and work, and Game 5 of an LCS was always played on that Monday afternoon.
@@N394-l1f I know to which one you’re referring, but that one in particular was actually the day before - Game 4. The Columbus Day Game was Game 5: down 3-1 in the Series, Sierra hit a big homer to help the A’s win. The Blue Jays clinched the pennant two days later in Toronto🇨🇦.
I had class that day. I was in 6th Grade at Beverly Hills in Upper Darby. We never had Columbus Day off but we did have Veterans Day off. When I moved to Lower Merion, we had neither off. I remember the game being on in one of the classrooms at the end of the day. I think the game started at 3:00 PM which was around dismissal. That night I went with my family to the airport to welcome the team back from Atlanta. That was 30 years ago today. I love how we can see the peanut farmer (Jimmy Carter) being pissed off at Lenny Dykstra's homerun in the 10th inning. Too bad we couldn't piss off the other Carter (Joe Carter).
seems like just yesterday to me. by far my favorite phillies season. i watched so many games that year. after the giant game they came back in and won on a wild pitch i ordered prism so i wouldn't miss anymore games. i just found this channel after darren daulton died and am having a bittersweet stroll down memory lane. i love the commercials and local news being a part of the games.
Quite a game. When the Braves tied it in the 9th, everyone seemed to think it was gonna be a fait accompli- another Braves pennant, an ATL-TOR rematch. Then Lemke just missed a game-winner (THAT is a postseason what-if). Crazy to think how close we came to Dykstra not even getting a chance in extra innings.
+Chris Kreager I love the Braves, especially back then. I was in 8th grade when I came home and saw the rest of the game when they scored 3 in the 9th. I remember Lemke almost won it and Dykstra hit the homer to beat us. It always used to come down to the bullpen with the Braves. If we would've had Eckersley or Rollie Fingers or someone like that in our bullpen we would've been better off. I always thought if Atlanta would have gotten back to the series against Toronto they would have won because them boys were to good to lose 3 straight world series. Bobby Cox would not have allowed that.
I can't believe I still watch '93 Phils playoff games thinking they may win the WS. At least we didn't lose to like a so-so team. Those back to back Blue Jays teams were loaded.
I'm a Jays' fan, and they felt like "The Yankees, before the Yankees". lol Every single season, they had 2 or 3 MAJOR free agent signings, and multiple Trade deadline rentals.
Wes Chamberlain was a defensive beast that day. Saved a run twice in the first inning (playing the carom on Blauser’s hit, then the carom on McGriff’s single and a great relay to home); followed by a great throw to nail Berryhill in the second to cut off a potential rally.
3:13:48 -- wholers had a penchant for picking the worst possible times to throw a dumb mistake down the middle of the plate. he was actually the best reliever the braves had in the early to mid 90s era. that how bad the braves bullpen was and the reason they won only one WS in all those division titles. streaky offense and no bullpen. having the dominate starting pitching like they did but with no bullpen to close out games made for a lot of disappointing octobers.
Case in point, the Lyritz bomb in game four of '96. Don't get me wrong, the Yankees are my team. But, as thrilled as I was he hit that jack, that was still a dumb pitch by Wholers. Left it hanging on a tee.
Phils OF made several key plays that weekend in Atlanta Game 4 saved by LF Milt Thompson's leaping catch with tying/winning runs in 8th; game 5, Inky's diving catch in LF, 3 good plays by RF Wes Chamberlein Phils Team first attitude evident throughout.. That was a special team.
Yes, they could have. Had Braves won Game 4 to go up 3-1 with a chance to clinch the following afternoon, the series might not have gone back to Philly. Momentum's a crazy thing in a baseball series.
I don't understand why, at the beginning of this video, McDonough says "Game 5 was make or break." Game 5 hadn't happened yet. He meant game 4, right? Someone please help.
Yeah, that's right up there with Jim McKay in '84 saying "The last time we were in Los Angeles for the Olympics, there were no live cameras covering the events and no helicopters screwing -- cruising through the sky!" (Earlier, he had talked about these things in an intro and gotten it right..)
51:07 Correct me if I’m wrong: the grey wall is in play? I know the umpire back then had to see it hit the grey wall in real time, but I would’ve guessed that’s out of play: thus a ground rule double. I’ll hang up and listen.
3:20:19 how can a pitcher have a record of 28-7 in "no-decision" games, Tim? Don't you mean 'the team went 28-7 in games in which he pitched and he wasn't credited with the decision'?
You were right brother, this team is sure fun to watch. Thanks for posting these man. I've really become a phillies fan because of these. Do you have any good ones between them and the rangers? Or the padres? I bet Schmidt and Gwynn put on some clinics!
I think Kruk is more atlhetic than inky in 1993 so maybe he could have been put back at left and switch Inky at 1st base. For a big guy Kruk could move back then.
30 years later, the Phillies stun the Braves in 2022 and this year.

afternoon Columbus Day LCS was a tradition for another reason- they never went head to head with MNF
I think the year before that LCS was Alomar's game-tying home run off Eckersly on Columbus Day if I'm not mistaken.

game 5 of the nlcs?
Phillies Manager Jim Fregosi was one of my favorite Managers for the Phillies. He always had that serious face. Rest in Peace Jim Fregosi.

93 Philles had heart
Dykstra went deep on a full count
Because The Dude Always went deep. On and Off the Diamond.... He's The Dude

WHAT A GREAT GAME AS A PHILLIES FAN!
The Braves gave up after this game
I can't believe I still watch '93 Phils playoff games thinking they may win the WS. At least we didn't lose to like a so-so team. Those back to back Blue Jays teams were loaded.
The second Jays team was even more stacked than the first.
I'm a Jays' fan, and they felt like "The Yankees, before the Yankees". lol
Every single season, they had 2 or 3 MAJOR free agent signings, and multiple Trade deadline rentals.
This was an INCREDIBLE game. The Dude in the 10th! That winning run was 90 ft away in the bottom of the 9th forever
This was an incredibly entertaining game. No shortage of drama.
Braves had way more talent but the Phillies had heart you cant teach that
Looking back, that foul ball in the 9th when it was tied at 5- that is as close as we have come to a World Series rematch since 1977-1978 NYY-LAD
Wes Chamberlain was a defensive beast that day. Saved a run twice in the first inning (playing the carom on Blauser’s hit, then the carom on McGriff’s single and a great relay to home); followed by a great throw to nail Berryhill in the second to cut off a potential rally.
Chamberlain wasn't utilized enough
That Last Pitch by Anderson Was SICK!
I miss the 90s when sports was real

DaCaptain924 There hitting was not good a nuff
Also, particularly after 1995, a number of key errors in big big moments (especially in the 1996 World Series).
Case in point, the Lyritz bomb in game four of '96. Don't get me wrong, the Yankees are my team. But, as thrilled as I was he hit that jack, that was still a dumb pitch by Wholers. Left it hanging on a tee.

Jason Richards game 4 and 5 definitely could have went either way
Yes, they could have.
Had Braves won Game 4 to go up 3-1 with a chance to clinch the following afternoon, the series might not have gone back to Philly.
Momentum's a crazy thing in a baseball series.
sure is and the phillies had it in game six
49:48... One of the best speedster ever made. After giving Mods, I Almost killed myself a few Times
Go Phightins 2024!
You know what the irony of this game is? Mitch Williams got out of a runners at the corners, 1 out jam in the 9th after giving up the 3 runs
3:13:49 HOMERUN Lenny Dykstra!
Schilling was pissed when he got pulled.
THE DUDE!!

Great win by the Phillies and stupid comments by Tim McCarver. I remember both well.
Put McGriff and Schilling in the HOF
The Braves were so much better, bit that bullpen. Yuck!
2:45 Dutch thought Mitch just blew the series but Batiste snared it
2:36:39 How big was THAT Insurance run? Without that, they lose 3-2 instead of getting extra innings and a chance to salvage things
You were right brother, this team is sure fun to watch. Thanks for posting these man. I've really become a phillies fan because of these. Do you have any good ones between them and the rangers? Or the padres? I bet Schmidt and Gwynn put on some clinics!
Should have tried a squeeze play in the 9th with Lemke oh well
I think Kruk is more atlhetic than inky in 1993 so maybe he could have been put back at left and switch Inky at 1st base. For a big guy Kruk could move back then.
Lenny Dykstra once said that Incavilgia was allergic to leather in regards to his defense.
Wholer’s blew allot of big games….
Braves stinking up the joint
2:37:21 wow if inky connected with this one, I dont think I ever seen a bat go this fast
3:19:51 or a decision...important detail, don't you think?
