Aside from Wohlers's idiotic game tying slider to Leyritz in Game 4 of the '96 World Series, pitching never was the Braves' problem in the playoffs. Good pitching, just couldn't get the big hit when they needed it.
And the same thing happened to the Yankees against Atlanta in the '96 WS! If Yankees don't win Game 4 with the Leyritz miracle HR, the Yankees don't win it all! Proof that Game 4 in any postseason series is the most important momentum-wise when the series goes past 5 games
True & Phils got Schilling in a small (at the time) trade with Houston prior to '92. He learned a splitter from Phillie pitching coach, was the lone bright spot on injury riddled '92 Phils & was even better in '93. Danny Jackson was coming off bad years with my Cubs, but had a good post-season history & would have pitched Game 7 vs Toronto, had there been one.
braves = CHOKE. 1 run on TEN hits. u kidding me??? after scoring almost 20 runs in the two games before??? that was their big problem in the 90s. streaky offense with NO bullpen.
DaCaptain, it wasn't that the Braves had no bullpen! Their bullpen problem was positive consistency! Braves bullpen during those years was solid, just streaks of inconsistent! U never knew what you were gonna get! The biggest example of proof - Mark Wohlers was one of the best relief pitchers in baseball during the mid to late '90s and was having his best season in '96 and yet he gave up the Series momentum HR to mostly average Jim Leyritz in Game 4 of the '96 WS
And the postseason wasn't always kind to the Braves legendary starting rotation either! With that talent they had and only 1 world championship out of 14 playoff appearances! They were the poster child for playoff disappointment espec '93 and '96! Those were the two years where they head and shoulders had the best team in all of baseball
I also believe that '96 Series loss was the momentum changer of the decade! Instead of a possible dynasty starting back to back, that WS generated the Yankees run of 4 world championships and 5 pennants in 6 seasons! The Braves as a franchise were never the same after blowing that title shot! It made them mentally vulnerable
If you watch the pitch, Mitch doesnt put the gas on it like he usually does, if he did, either Lemke fouls it, swings and misses, or its out of the park. Mitch tried to throw a get me over 1st pitch and Lemke had success off Mitch.
I can't believe how gutsy the Atlanta pitching was *this entire game* yet their offense couldn't put together one productive inning. This team should've won at least 2-3 titles. But I'm just so happy they won in '95. So many great teams never win even one.
one of the best games in MLB history
yep
The best teams in baseball don’t always win. It is usually the team that gets hot before the playoffs.
DJ pitched with so much guts and guile. ballsy effort by him. turned this series around with that performance
An all time classic!!
16:55. Me when I watch game 6 of the world series and Joe Carter steps up in the ninth.

Yes... the Leo mazzone f 💣. Remember like it was yesterday.
“Leo says that was Strike 3”. A classic deadpan response
SUCH AN AWESOME GAME FOR THE PHILLIES!!!
This win here was the difference in the series! And most needed! If the Phillies don't win Game 4, they WITHOUT QUESTION don't win the pennant
And the same thing happened to the Yankees against Atlanta in the '96 WS! If Yankees don't win Game 4 with the Leyritz miracle HR, the Yankees don't win it all! Proof that Game 4 in any postseason series is the most important momentum-wise when the series goes past 5 games
Dykstra went off in 93!!!
Just like the '93 Phillies. Winning after striking out 15 times and leaving 15 men on base. Unbelieveagable.
Ya, strange game. 4 K's for Kruk; brutal night for Ron Gant.
Danny Jackson a key off-season pickup for '93 Phils; had bounce back year.
Jason Richards With out him and Schilling they wood never have got as far as they did .

Jason Richards to bad there bullpen was such a liability
Ya, it was.
It takes such a strong bullpen to get thru April, because hitters see the same pitchers & become familiar with them.

DaCaptain924 They should have let Deon hit more

I bet you're singing a different tune after what just happened this past season.

Jackson did that

your right Lizzy the Braves deserved to win more championships
The Dude
Best game of the series! Everything broke right for the Phillies & as a Phillies fan, how often do we get to say that?
lol maybe like 4 or 5xs ever in the playoffs.
Morandini played great
This when MLB was good
tim is all up on that dude in the intro. looked like he was trying to pick him up.
Did Mitch Williams pitch effectively in this game or was he lucky he didn't get rocked? I couldn't tell.
Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.
True enough.
mitch was completely shot at this point in the season-no life on any pitch. got by with smoke and mirrors until the end.
Still don’t know how the Braves lost this series.
