2004 Chrysler ME-412 Supercar Story - History, Specs, & Why It Got Cancelled (Blame Mercedes!)

- Taking a look at the story of the forgotten supercar Chrysler once built, the 2004 Chrysler ME-412. This was a special beast, with a mid-engine V12 with 4 turbochargers, and 850 horsepower. It would have been the fastest production car ever at the time, and Chrysler had planned to build 300 per year, selling for a price of at least $250,000. Unfortunately, Mercedes stepped in the way and the car got cancelled, leaving many to wonder, 'What If'?

The ME-412 reminds me of the time I drove it in Midnight Club 3 Dub Edition.
NOT YOU AGAIN
@@N54- Fuck
My guy, I see you everywhere 😭 I swear we're subscribed to the all the same channels
Midnight Club Still Cancelled Soz That was the first game that popped up in my head once I saw the thumbnail to this video, and then TDU1 popped up too, the ME-412 is amazing in every game it’s featured in. 🤤
@@N54- HE IS EVERYWHERE
For 2004 this thing was ahead of it's time, still looks good and relatively modern even by today's standards.
Don’t say chrysler should... chrysler should... mercedes benz is the guilty of chrysler’s failure
Well Chrysler made a bad car a pt cruiser
VelociraptorGamer YT this is not a pt cruiser
@@yuh2634 he's saying that the PT cruiser was trash due to unreliability. This super car would have changed everything for chrysler. Not too much of a chrysler fan but this super car is really nice.
Lori Mercedes bought Chrysler with the intention of gutting everything except vans & Jeeps & they figured out in short order how much of a shit company Chrysler was, is & always will be & sold them off. If it weren't for constant government bailouts for the last 70-plus years, Chrysler would've ceased to exist a LONG time ago.
Chrysler needs to hire new respectable people and designers for them and make great cars again
It’s really neat, but executives should have put more time into making their passenger vehicles more reliable, as you said. Great video as always
Diamler management acted like a 2 year old throughout the merger.
Yup they were assholes to Chrysler. If mercedes and Chrysler had been separate there would have been no argument about the SLR McLaren
Absolutely. They kept neutering Chrysler, especially when Dr. Z was ready to offload it to Cerberus.
Mercrap was the worst thing to happen to Chrysler
@StoP TROLLING mE BrO have you seen some of the nightmares associated with big Mercedes engines? Not necessarily a "good" thing.
@StoP TROLLING mE BrO While a few Chrysler vehicles use MB architecture, only one used an MB engine. That one vehicle is the crappy Crossfire.
FCA could really shutdown the car Industry if they brought this back, but they be letting them breathe, but they’re not letting they foot off on muscle and truck brands necks.
totes, dude..totes!
We NEED this thing in production! Would've saved Chrysler BIG TIME!
Mr. Baghdad how?
@@SAMann729 It would make Chrysler more advanced.
it would have put them in extreme debt too lmfao
im hoping the 2020 vette does well, it will force FCA to take another look at the market and maybe make another serious performance car. Maybe not a ME 4 12 but maybe an ME 8 :)
competition is a fine motivator.
I remember seeing this at 8 years old and being completely blown away. A true cars ahead of its time.
Reminds me of what SketchMonkey would have done with the Dodge M4S with the MB partsbin.
Looks like Chevrolet stole allot of the designs from the ME412 for their 2020 Vette. A beautiful car for sure.
Greg Mosk
I noticed that as well
jayjaylen75 xD
john satterfield they have almost zero similar shapes....
man i just started to read again about this car like week ago, and now u got a film about it. nice!
Honestly, I’m so sad it was canceled, would have been such a cool ass car
So there’s 2 built… where are they now? Wish they would’ve kept building more and more. Looked great!
I was so excited when this car was announced. I won’t lie that I wasn’t disappointed when it went away
Thanks for addressing this TOTALLY AMAZING AND AWESOME CAR. Maybe the new C8 will pick up where it left off.
I always liked the look of its tail lights since I was little
If you think about what the cost of the car would’ve done to Chrysler, followed by the crash of the economy a few years later, makes you wonder if this car was produced, would Chrysler/Dodge exist today?
It is crazy that if they dropped this car today most people wouldn’t know the difference between modern and 15 years ago. However it does show its age a little. The engine is old news, the new corvette shifts over 100ms faster with the dual clutch. Did I miss a drive train? Gears or drive train layout? Maybe I missed it
Yes, people would have bought it and they should always push the supercars through because of what we learn from them and racing.
It would have sold out faster that any car you would have dreamed of at the time it would have broken every sales record.what a total heartbreak.
Dieter Zetsche was a true visionary and real team player...he brought the best of both worlds...Germany and Chrysler...together in the ME-412.
The problem was the insecure Mercedes Benz executives above him who were not only pissed off, but let their collective egos get the better of them. How dare Chrysler in this “Merger of Equals” out do our SLR.
I heard they really chewed out Dieter for backing the ME-412 and making it better than their SLR. The man deserved a medal not beat down for making the ME-412.
It’s a damn shame they never built this car and what they did to Dieter.
Saw this car in real life... Very pretty!:)
This should be resurrected to compete against the c8 corvette and Ford gt. This was way ahead of its time and with a few updates like led lights, would hardly need any work to look current. The interior is perfect too. A beautiful car indeed!
If Chrysler actually would of built this me-12 it would of made a huge wave 🌊
The shit the Daimler did to Chrysler behind the scenes is absolutely criminal. They forced Chrysler to use Mercedes-Benz technology in their cars, but wouldn’t allow them to even use the same materials on top of siphoning money from Chrysler to Mercedes. They literally buried this car just because the higher ups at Mercedes were scared shitless that the ME-412 was going to outsell the SLR. This car would have changed the game, big time.
The taillights are so sick
This might be the most beautiful m/e super car ever.
Somewhere in an alternate reality Doug is reviewing this car's 4th generation variant 😑
If they released that car today, it would still look new and modern. With a few technological updates it would still hold its own against hypercars
Hands down my one of the best looking car.
Prowler with the srt treatment would be nice
Price tag.Should, have done like Chevey Corvette come out at Ute.
The center console reminds me of Agera interior
With the wheel of button
Dodge Caliber history video plz😍
Now it’s the perfect time to bring it back to compete against C8.
FCA has multiple cars at there hands to revive and shut everything down but they won’t, as for now, because the Durango is moving over to the Ram platform which opens up doors for the Ramcharger.
I wish Chrysler would have made this car, their future/present may have been different.
They should have man. Still looks clean even now
My favorite car from Midnight club 3
Looks like a lot of the mid engine viper renders I’ve seen
Reminded me of a Gumbpert Apollo.
I wonder if they still have this car somewhere stored or what?
Flying down the highway at 250mph with nitro. Now that's nostalgia.
They should bring it back, shorten the length, throw the v10 in turbo, and hunt Audi
I like the sound of hemi 412 instead of me-412
I used to love this car in test drive
Interior of this is better then the new 2020 Vetter! lol
This would break necks today Forsure!
Who remembers this car on test drive unlimited?
Don't blame mercedes, Blame the charger, Viper, and the around the corner challenger. Blame Chrysler. This car never was supposed to exist, except for in your mind, heart, and soul. Quarter million chrysler. I'm laughing my ass off right now. If you call me biased, just know I love mopar alot. But I know a marketing scheme when I see one.
Those wheels are the 300 srt wheels before they made them for the production car
Would you consider doing the Volkswagen Nardo?
That'd be dope 😎
Midnight club 3 dub edition introduced me to this car.
It introduced me to a lot of cars actually
Its a shame they didnt make the car! I think collectors would have bought it.
The only way this car could come into play as a real car today is if Fiat would just go buy the damn blueprints and layouts from Mercedes so this beautiful creation can come to life. I would definitely buy one.
But of course we all know that will never happen.
You know you rich when your name is “Wolfgang”
It's honestly the most beautiful super/sports car out of america, really. It really is. It's gorgeous. It makes mclarens look like boo
That sounds and looks awesome
It looks like the car was made in like 2015 for a 2004
The car was in Forza Motorsport 2 too.
So sad they killed this car cause of the SLR McLaren.
Please talk about Cadillac Cien
I remember this car as the first overpowered most people would win in Gran Turismo 4.
It was never in Gran Turismo, you're probably thinking of the Cadillac Cien
Can we go back in time and have the me 412 produced
Bugatti stole literally almost everything about the veyron from this car. Wow!
No, Chrysler stole everything about the Bugatti EB110 FOR this car!
lol, Bugatti didn't stole anything, Veyron was in development long before this Chrysler
@@TymaDem Oh i thought it was thw other way around. You kinda see some R8 in it as well which is VW just like Bugatti. I was wrong
@@fastorflightracing9317 no worries, it's a shame that the project. It could have been a great battle between this and Veyron.
The ME-412 would've been the bench mark of modern day super car....
This car would have changed the Chrysler brand to an elete status
I think people would’ve gladly bought the car without issue
Diamler was a struggling brand that bought Chrysler as a lifeboat. Once it was no longer sinking, and they had taken what they could from Chrysler, they scuttled it and moved on.
Chrysler should have put in GT racing it would have been amazing seeing the me-412 at LeMans
Chrysler was 15 years ahead of the game but let the opportunity slip away.....
No, Mercedes did.
@StoP TROLLING mE BrO - this car is so much better looking than the Veyron... and at a much better price point.
Thats the only issue honestly, they should try to bring it back, give some pride to the drying Chrysler brand. Throw in a Hellcat engine and you got a supercar killer with the looks to match
It was a kinda stolen design, engine from benz, european supercar structure and all with a batch that isnt really interesting in that market.
So...
I dont see how this is chrysler being ahead of anything.

Chrysler had been badly made for a long time.

I don’t think so, when you can spend $60K on a C8 Corvette doing rest to 60 in THREE SECONDS!
@@unknownunknowns 👍🏻
It would be a great car, even in original form!
Carlos Anderson A great, maybe, but GM would have to go the Euro of more power in a smaller displacement, and that’s costly. The Corvette is supposed to that cheap sports car.
I agree. But they should contact other established super car manufacturers for reliability.
I think Chrysler should look into doing a supercar again cause let's face it the viper was damn near a supercar and it was amazing. Could you imagine if Chrysler took what they learned from building the me 412 and applied that to today's technology.
I totally agree. Only thing is they would have to make it a bit cheaper, like new Vette territory pricing. This one at $250k is way too much for most people to ever spend on Chrysler
@@MarspeedCars ...except the multi million dollar wing cars, as in Superbird, Charger Daytona & E bodies, that is. there's been a fairly long running group of smart and well heeled ppl spending srs bucks on Mopar muscle..why not a new car..if crazy/cool enough like the ME. Especially given a 'No Viper production' climate. plus look at how fast the new Hellephant mills sold out..2 days! The Demon? sold 'em as fast as the car is! they're on eBay now for markedly over original sticker $. ok..all that said..give us an ME-12 mkII for $100,000. ..but not with a rubbish AMG engine, pls. Not a V-12 anything, Mopar learned they're a bad idea when designing the Viper..too much crank whip. The number of $250,000+ Mopes that change hands regularly is out of sight..and..largely out of sight. Nobody likes to champion how cool they are publicly, rather more fun to be a troll and kick a man when he's down. that's the world today..and THAT is why Chrysler has always had to do more with less and kick ass..and get ignored and shouted down for it's efforts. Ik bc I'm 52 yrs old and have put up with it since i was a child...eon's before YT or FB, etc (PPl are so much nicer on the 'gram..why is that? LOL) Though..it's a price worth paying to enjoy the best cars, ever.
I don't think FCA is ok with Chrysler doing performance cars they would like Maserati and Alfa Romeo to do that.
Fiat would never let them.
Make it start at 55k it would be killer >:)
"The Chrysler ME-412 Was The Most Power American Car of the 2000s That Was Never Made"
- Doug DeMuro
THIS ISSSSSSSS
a Chrysler ME-412,, And it I was the most powerful American car of the 2000s that was never made, You probably don’t even know what the heck even is this car, well today I’m gonna introduce you to it. I borrowed this concept car from a museum here in Detroit and this car ( or concept car for that because it was never made into production and there’s only two in existence which the one I have here is the only drivable one) has AMAZING SPECS, that absolutely blows my mind but first a little overview, This insane concept car was created by Chrysler in 2004 at the time that it was in a partnership with Daimler and was developed in less than a year and was originally going to be produced to compete with other supercars like the Ford Gt. It has amazing specs including a 7 cylinder and 14 turbos engine which produces 800 horsepower and It will do 0-60 in 2.9 SECONDS and 0-100 miles in 6.2 seconds WHICH ARE INSANE numbers even for today. So today I’m gonna drive this car, I’m gonna check out it’s quirks and features, then I am gonna drive It and then I’m gonna give it a Doug Score and for more of my thoughts on the Chrysler ME412 check out my column at Auto-trader.com/oversteer where I also put a list of insane supercars for sale, now onto the review.

All with a batch and brand that only sold in the us
I love this car. its so elegantly styled. i still think its one of the most beautiful cars. Those tail lights are somethings else I really wish they would have made or hell id be fine with them replacing the viper with this but making it a Dodge ME412 or just SRT ME412
It’s a timeless design that works for any modern era really, totally agree. I wanna see it come back for 2021 instead of a possible Viper return 👀

This cars design is rather impressive even by today's standards. It's aged well.
The Viper is one of the best cars ever made. It's legendary. Too bad a Chinese company owns 50% of Chrysler now...
You'd be fine that eh? You'd end up buying one would ya?
I think someone at Audi has some explaining to do about the r8.
Word....did they copy this design?
No the R8 s design is basically unchanged from the audi lemans concept wich came out in 2003, one year before this
No they don’t, it’s more of chrysler’s fault, however, I don’t see any simmilarities. what looks alike to you on these cars?

One of those cars that SHOULD HAVE been produced. This & the Ford GT90 which was also a quad-turbo V12 concept, but in 1995.
I remember seeing this in multiple auto magazines when I was younger
Carrington Hollister yup. I’ve got them
I got so many posters of this car its ridiculous! To bad it never got produced. 😔
So, technically its a Zonda with a tuned engine from AMG?
Zonda engines are from AMG
Yea but this would have been the Daimler-chrysler luxury super car. It reminds me of the Ford gt90 prototype had a v12 made from 2 4.6l 2v mod motors with 4 turbos lol. Would have been something way different if they had went it to production
Zonda's use AMG engines. They have from the beginning
Depends
Imagine what it could have been today
Discontinued...
It would be as relevant today as the LFA, some cars just age far too well and this is definitely one of them. Even if it didn't last in production these would surely go high in resale value over time, 2.9 back is the 2000s was insane, I'm actually surprised Pagani was involved in this project.
Nothing...
Its the idea of going into a market owned by european brands by taking a merc engine, merc know how, stealing european supercar design(but yeah, lets pretend the r8 was taken from this instead this from lamborghini, audi avus and therelike) and putting a chrysler badge on it.
There is no appeal in that.
Chryslers only sell in the us, noone wants to pay that money for a chrysler when they are in the lambo, ferrari and porsche market

I still like to sit and wonder sometimes of what Chrysler would be like now if this car had made it to production. I imagine they wouldve been a very respected premium brand unlike how they are today
Especially with the Mercedes merge!
Brings me back to when Midnight club 3 dub edition was the shizzle.
So basically, long story short, since Chrysler and Mercedes are under the same corporation umbrella at the time, and the Chrysler division outdid Mercedes, Mercedes threw a tantrum and killed the Me-412.
This could have been Chrysler’s answer to the McLaren F1. And it’s lovely to look at
it's so different from the Viper in design and mechanicals..yet both are among the best looking and performing cars around..and for less kaching than Brand X.
If you can do a video on the Cadillac Cien Concept that would be awesome!
I totally remember that car!!
Its a Mopar channel dumbass!
Go and see a GM channel. We are mopar on here.

1000 hp, then they shit on it with a v6, reminds me of the new Supra, grow a pair people
I really thought this car was insane when it came out! I was in awe! The only other car to do the same thing for me was the Koenigsegg CCX when those first started out. At least that brand has continued and become amazing. Although it is tragic that the USA doesn't have another supercar made by brands in Detroit other than Ford GT.
straight up looks like a 2020 concept car
edit: a Dodge M4S Interceptor concept video would make a perfect follow up to this
This would have made chrysler number one. Love this car. But I agree about Mercedes didnt want to be out done by designed, styled, low cost and bested by a cheap american Yankee car company(that would really put something in there corn whole). I have read statements/comment and reports by Diamler/Mercedes and chrysler. The higher ups had the problems (the bean counters) but the engineers on both sides had worked well together. It could have be great, but you kno how those Germans and the whole united Kingdom. Everything they make, out shines any man made material/quality. (Very snobby).
probs true. like how governments start wars..not citizens.
Tom Johnson Democrats start wars. Not America’s government
Say that again but slowly
Damn Chrysler y’all SLAPPED the 💩 out of Mercedes when you did this!!!!😂😂😂😂👌🏻
so the car was in similar situation as the Grand National and Corvette where the lower brand was better then the top brand
Pretty much. Mercedes wanted their SLR McLaren to be top dog and scrapped the ME412 pretty quick
@@MarspeedCars would've loved to see the two head to head. SLR would be embarrassed badly. i own an SRT6 and if I'm not mistaken the SLR has the same transmission just more beefed up. That transmission then was damn near 15 years old. Mercedes screwed a lot of Chryslers ideas to hell. The Crossfire concept was brilliant. When it came to out the design was quite close. BUT they throw this under powered 3.2L 215hp engine in it. At least they rectified it with the SRT6. What's even more screwy though is they downgraded the SRT6 specs as to not piss off the SLK32 AMG owners because you could have the same car in the SRT6 but a cheaper price tag. It actually has more because the SRT6 has better cooling. So the SLK32 has 349hp where as they quoted the SRT6 as 330 but has same motor but with better cooling? Another case of Mercedes screwing Chrysler. The SRT6 is actually around 362 because of the cooling. Also why would they not put the Crossfire on the R171 platform which is gen 2 SLK, since they came out the same year? another Mercedes screw job to Chrysler. Also the Firepower was also a brilliant Concept that would've sold like crazy in my opinion. Another Mercedes screw job. Hopefully Mercedes used lube because Chrysler was getting the shaft all the time during that merger. The only thing they left Chrysler with was the LX platform which we all know is used on the Challenger and Charger. It has aged well but is definitely in need of a refresh. Maybe some AWD sports cars in the shoot. Hopefully they take a look back at the ME412, Firepower and even the Crossfire and see what the future might've been but could still be done. well enough of my rant lol.
Would’ve been cool to see a SRT12. This is the main concept from Chrysler I’d love to learn more about and actually see this in production even in low numbers.
Even when the FCA merger became a thing I think they should’ve relaunched the idea of the ME412 just update the interior and powertrain.
Love the interior, looked ahead of its time and still holds up in my opinion. Too bad Mercedes squashed it because with the Viper pedigree(Chrysler) it would've been a hit.
honestly, they can literally sell this car right now and it would still attract attention. That kind of performance is still impressive today, accelaration and handling may be even better when the car has today’s tires. And there are not many cars that can do 248 mph, the ones that do cost over 1 million, and this was projected to sell @250k just one year before the Veyron debuted @1mill.
And if they release this today, Mercedes won’t be embarrased because they already have another supercar that’s guaranteed to beat it on the track, the AMG One.
So yeah, they should resurrect this car 👍🏻
Basically a Bugatti
Me412 Mid engine 4 turbo 12 cylinder my dad actually worked on it
