Hey Kyle great video! Appreciate the honesty in this video without the bias towards or against Tesla/autopilot that some other channels seem to have. Probably my favorite series on the channel so far.
I did just want to make one suggestion. You probably already know this, but instead of turning the wheel or hitting the brakes, you can lightly tap up on the autopilot stalk to disengage autopilot in a much more controlled manner. I agree turning the wheel to disengage isn’t very smooth, but just lightly tapping up with your right hand as you simultaneously turn the wheel left/right completely solves this IMO. You’re probably already aware of this but just wanted to mention in case any viewers weren’t!

Another thing you can do hold down on stalk while in AP it will change to the indicated speed.example - if you're going 65 mph and speed drops to 55 mph the car will continue (on highway only) going 65 mph. Agree with much of what you say, especially the positive impact AP has on freeway driving. I’ve used it driving my 2021 M3 SR+ through LA, and simply using AP set at 80 mph made the stop-and-go then ZOOM then stop-and-go nature of LA driving sooo much less stressful! That’s what sold me on using AP regularly.
I haven’t had any phantom braking issues (knocking on wood!) with my radar equipped car. It has gotten noticeably better on those wide merge on/off lanes.

In my experience the torque input required varies by the confidence level the AP has in its own actions. In weird construction zones, it requires miniscule input to break free, so no risk to swerve, in other situations it's significantly heavier.

Well done! AP is indeed a huge boon for roadtrips. Well said, it's not perfect, but a huge assistance and probably works the best across all conditions & road types/locations.
One thing I've noticed, re staying in lane & picking a line thru curves, especially w/ wide or joined lanes, or for exits suddenly appearing:
the car appears to give strong weight , to following a car ahead of you (vs guessing at lane lines it is unsure of.)
So if you are scoring based on the car making solid choices or waffling, be mindful if there is a car ahead- it likely will affect the car behavior. I've had it follow cars ahead & stay in lane, even w/ near-invisible lane lines (rainouts, faded paint, new paving where NO lines (just seams)! But if the car ahead is gone, it gets confused and gives up.

    • @cgamiga

Another stress test case, if you can find one Kyle: roads/highways with some LEFT exit/turn lanes, especially where the leftmost #1 lane widens or splits into two lanes, a left-turn (w/ arrow marking) and straight.
Several times I've had AP pick/stay in that LEFT lane, but keep going full speed assuming it goes straight...
but, that lane ENDs (into a guardrail sometimes!). I have to take over immediately! and yes sometimes it even jerks/swerves a bit to pick that left lane, too.
That's the only real scary case I've hit repeatedly w/ AP... haven't run into that scenario recently, a year or two back, so not sure if it's been fixed in newer versions.

It's the same car that I have. My problem is that the car was so expensive I can't upgrade to 18" or 19" wheels because of the cost. I don't agree with your test on the floating nature of the car at speed around corners. I live in the desert of California but coming up to the high valley that I live in is an uphill, very fun, winding road. When I had my tuned GTI I could use every bit of the performance of that car coming up that road. Whether or not you believe Tesla I believe their explanation for vision only was that while a lay person would believe as you do that radar provides redundancy and should be included what they found instead is that having radar and vision together caused sensor discrepancy rather than redundancy. The radar and vision sensor data would often disagree and often it was the radar providing the false information due to problems with resolution that radar has and they spent a lot of algorithm work on trying to reconcile the discrepancy. Therefore they decided to remove radar and focus on making vision independently better
A human analogy would be if your eyes and your ears constantly disagreed on sensing the environment around you and rather than helping you walk better it caused confusion as you have to constantly analyze whether to trust your ears or your eyes more. In this situation its not so simple as « ears provide necessary redundancy “. When the two constantly disagree it would be more helpful for you to focus on the one system that you find more reliable rather than constantly try to reconcile the two

    • @harsimranbansal5355

Yep, when people talk about redundancy, they are just saying that their vision system doesn't work and they don't ever expect to get it to work. Redundancy is about taking over from a failed system, but radar can't take over from a failed vision system. If they had two vision systems, that would be redundancy.

10:20 Maybe you should add a qualifier to the list "AP drops speed to the limit before the sign" next to "AP drops speed to the limit after the sign". That is, if you consider yourself an international channel. In many European countries, speed cameras are placed right at the sign of the town entrance; if your speed is not low enough then, you will be fined. Dutch prices as an example : 3 miles over = 33.50$ , 6 miles over = 72.50$ , 9 miles over = 140$. They do allow for your speedometer to have a 2.5mph deviation. 😋

And it never recognizes speed limits on the Autobahn. I sure hope they get their act together this year. As promised…

I would like to see this re-ran later this year, say Sept-November timeline. Reason is we should, and on FSD beta we are close frankly - steps are being made internally each build, to them merging/re-writing the NoAP/AP code base to the new system. When the new FSD beta system gets on the highway it does thing far better than the old system (for example, lane centering and ping ponging you had, the new system flat in most of my circumstances has not been like this at all, on highway) or when I get it work on a non-NoAP flagged highway it stays on FSD beta it works extremely well.. IT looks highly promising frankly.. Also was stated was increase of cruise/ap speed to 85 in next update or two, we are waiting on 10.11.12 build still, but it could be in this one. So with that being said a good summer worth of testing, I think it would be worthwhile to get a FSD beta equipped car and re-run this with the new 1 stack and see how it compares then.

Please add the following situation to your test. Anyone that drives in the Mid-Atlantic region can relate.
    - Set Autopilot for the speed limit with a follow distance of 2 or 3.
    - Allow it to approach a car doing 5-10mph slower.
    - observe the car adjusting speed to match the required following speed and distance.
    - if the car ahead then decides to accelerate, observe the Tesla accelerating VERY slowly, letting the follow distance increase to 5,6,7 etc. It will take almost 20 seconds to reach the speed limit again.
This is infuriating in traffic in these areas. The arguments that the car is being efficient or safe are ridiculous. Needing to push the accelerator to reach the desired speed and keep up with the flow of traffic again is absolutely ridiculous. Autopilot should lose major points here. Granted, it's a TACC issue, but you can't use AP without TACC so it should be considered in a driver assistance test.

  • @hirtisrandolph4843

Since the AP doesn't really spread out for exits, only entrance ramps and merge lanes... I wonder if it's actually intentional? To dominate a merge area to avoid getting passed in an unsafe zone? It's designed to avoid cars or warn the operator before collision, so if a car was in the lane it would keep left more or turn off AP and cruise control.

Does pre-drive portion give a single point for being able to use the system anywhere vs only mapped areas? If so, I don't know if that gives a good basis of comparison. If two cars have equal or close scores and one system only works in mapped areas and they've only mapped a very small portion of roads, its utility is nowhere near a system that can be used anywhere.

Love the AP in the Tesla, you just have to be cautious if you are a first time user until you get the gist of it. However, wanted to see if the following scenario is true, it happened to me. Driving at night on the most left lane @ 80mph with AP on, the highway had at least 4 lanes, further down I see emergency vehicles pulled over on the emergency lane with the flashing lights on. As we are getting close to the spot of the emergency vehicles far to my right, and no cars in front of me, my MYP starts breaking a bit hard for my taste, but I let it happen and see if it was going to keep stopping even more (had no cars behind me either), and it was stopping even more, then I pressed the accelerator pedal to keep it from totally slowing down. I wonder if AP stops the car if it sees emergency vehicles ahead, not necessary on the same lane or close to it.

It was cost. Teslas are modern vehicles stripped down to the bare necessities, sold for double the price to help support Teslas debt. Radar and LiDAR required huge investment, so ofc Elon Musk dropped out of the race, now providing the worst driver assist technology of all car brands. However it doesnt matter, because at the time he told a bunch of marketing nonsense, convincing his following that cameras will suffice to make Tesla full self-driving. Which was ofc a lie. But since there are countless Musk lies doing their rotations (Cybertruck, Tesla Taxi, Hyperloop, Tesla Truck, Tesla Robot, Mars Colonization etc. etc. etc.) people have forgotten. Also Musk is for some reason untouchable, no matter what SEC type of fraud he engages with. So... who cares.

The road itself (and streetside 'furniture' - signs, posts, barriers, etc) are pre-mapped in high resolution, lanes explicitly marked (rather than solely relying on the camera seeing the painted lines), and so on... the cameras are - mostly - used to monitor traffic, and confirm position on the road.

Historically Teslas ignore stopped objects when they get over 30 MPH. This is one of the reasons they have eliminated the old radar in the car. Kept hitting stopped firetrucks when the driver was doing something other than driving. Fortunately the car is so safe that only a few people have died in highway crashes, and many have been completely avoided, but there is no tracking of accidents that didn't happen.

But with airliners, it takes the pilot programing the flight computer every time, and keeping the diverent NAV radios changed, so, again, the still monitor the progress of the plane and are ready to take over, but the modern Airbus/Boeings pretty much fly themselves (in fact, look up how the throtle lever works on the Airbus airplanes: YOu have settigs for cruise, climb, go-around, etc).
