A good friend of mine ended up doing 7 years due to a litany of robberies.
He was a skinny, loopy crackhead at the time.
Life went on outside, I managed to get clean and get away from the drama while the rest of our crew either died from overdoses, got crippled in car accidents or brain damaged from one-hit punches.
That 1 friend came out of jail 7 years later absolutely shredded, clean as a whistle and had spent his entire time inside reading books, keeping his head down and also became a great artist. He went on to get a job as a support worker at a rehab and recently bought a house.
Sometimes jail can actually save someone from themselves. Sometimes.

"I would have been there those are my boys" that hits hard. Having to separate yourself from things and realizing you probably would have died or been paralyzed right with him. Or maybe things would have been different if he was there for the better or worse. So many what if's in life and these are some of the worst moments of it. I miss my bros. R.I.P

I feel what he is saying. I got arrested and was in lock-up for a little while until I got released on intent to appear for my court date. What made me realize I needed to get out of the life was that I felt safer in jail than at home and on the streets. Got in and saw all my boys from high school and from the neighbourhood it was crazy. I just felt so safe and they welcomed me with open arms it was almost like a reunion and it clicked this is not the life I want. Been 4 years since that happened and I have been working a 9-5 since then and I love my new life.

This interview really hit home for me. It took me back to my past and the state of my mentality back then. We were just kids by age but were so aggressive and callused. I can tell he still carries a lot of trauma like me. The fast lane will leave your nerves shot and you won’t ever trust anyone. you will truly want to but, you just can’t and I hate it.
