Man seeing those tears hurts. I remember going to a counselors meeting with my mom in high school and she told me the reason I was being a knucklehead was because I hadn’t dealt with my brother’s passing(who passed away 2 years prior) and I remember crying in front of my mom about it but she was a drug addict herself so she couldn’t help me. Sometimes you find family in the streets and in the streets you find more trauma, I never thought I’d live past 25 but here I am at 31 still striving. For anyone who hasn’t found a positive way to heal that trauma keep going, I promise you it gets easier

I love that he lets his guest talk and doesn’t just talk about irrelevant stuff like most podcast hosts do. He actually shows that he wants to hear their story. He makes the podcast about the guest and not about his own agenda.

It’s not necessarily excitement it’s more like nervousness like reliving something you can’t believe you did and no way to cope but to realize you can’t change what you did

Some people have a hard time expressing things they regret or things they didn’t wanna do but had to, adding a humor can help people cope because sometimes saying it raw will bring you to tears
Idgaf what any of you say, any former addict will agree with me when i say, when you start reminiscing about your past and all the things you did good and the bad, you get the feeling of excitement/euphoria in the moment. That IS NOT A BAD THING. It is a bad thing if you let that feeling consume you. And lead you back. In recovery you learn so many ways to cope with that, but you saying its sad that hes showing excitement is wrong. So yeah, shame on you. This man has lived a life SO MANY PEOPLE just speculate and make assumptions about, and he lived to tell the tale. And not only live but to MAKE SOMETHING of himself as well. So take your negativeness to the next video on your list. Thanks.
This has to be one of the realist interviews that I've seen. At age 16 I was incarcerated and sentenced to 20 years to life for a gang related murder. I've been home for almost 7 years and every day is a blessing.

Its not just the hood, i grew up in a normal middle class neighborhood where their is no violence or crimes but at the end i grew up robbing, threatning niggas with sticks, road rage for no reason just cuz a nigga looked at me the wrong way.
I have ptsd from how i grew up in school being bullied for being a arab in america, so the hood aint the main reason.
It’s everything that can give you depression or suicidal thoughts is what makes a person have ptsd.

There's a miracle in the opposition this man experienced. Opposition in all things, ying and yang, good and evil are some ways to experience growth. Looking into that man's eyes you could see the struggle/opposition but the touching part for me was he spoke truth. That's a starting point for change that ultimately will lead to a more positive happier life. The miracle is change through a necessary challenging struggle. Had he not had those negative experiences when he spoke he wouldn't have spoke truth to us and would be a hypocrite. Opposition in all things is necessary for growth. The sadness leads to a choice for a happier life

I was there at 18 years old in East LA Making bad choices ended up in prison for 24 months then by the grace of good ended in law school , Harvard post doctoral became a sports and entertainment executives at GBP Young ego and pride in the ghettos of east LA are crazy those are every day story in East LA Glad he made it out

Jon literally has the best sit downs to this day and it’s not even close. This ain’t Hollywood, this isn’t script, this is real life, real shit. And I’m fucking grateful for that. I was never in cabrals position, or Shias position, but it’s so fucking relatable to how I grew up and how a lot of other people grew up, lives, that man, just thank you. For real. This man reminds me of a friend I had in my younger days when I was a knucklehead. He was always looking over his shoulder as he did lots of dirt in his time, and a way to cope with his sorrow, was to bury that emotion deep under a mountain of cocaine. He was just as intense about his approach to life but sadly, his flame was extinguished to soon. Rest easy brother, no more watching over your shoulder I hope.

I look at this dude and I look back at my old life and I realize how lucky I am to not have ended up with life in prison or straight up dead or ended up hurting someone to the point of no return. For whatever reason, I was fortunate to escape that life. At the time I thought I was unlucky to get locked up, but I realize now that it saved me.

Jon has always came across someone who’s real, down to earth. Putting Richard’s story on your platform is bad ass. So many similar stories go unnoticed in Los Angeles on the daily.
I remember first being introduced to Richard on the Mayans Tv Show series . I always thought to myself this guy is an amazing actor. Watching this interview just made me realize he wasn’t acting on that show he is a “Real One”

I remember I met Richard with a couple of my uncles from MONTE he’s real deal he really lived that life, homie was active, crazy homeboy changed his life drastically thank the acting roles and opportunities he was granted, people can change but we need to help one another we all human not perfect
My dad was a veterano from Monte Flores, I've seen this life up close and personal, I'm so glad my mom had the strength to pull us out, otherwise I'd be dead. I go back there and it's like a time warp, people are stuck in the same shit they've been doing year ago when I still lived there. Smh

You can tell he was so nervous to talk at first it was hard for him to articulate his thoughts. Very chaotic working through the trauma responses. Then once he got comfortable and relaxed he became so enjoyable and eloquent. Loved this.

PTSD isn’t just a thing in us soldiers. This man fought a war as well, just on the streets. I can see in his eyes he’s been through a lot and seen a lot. Even in his voice. I hope he can vent like this more and also he should be in front of a camera or consulting Hollywood on LA gang culture more so on the Spanish side!

I watched him as “Coco” in Mayans and thought he was just playing a character, i never knew he really had such a tough life and a lot of those were likely his real emotions.
I had feeling he did there was just an authenticity to him

Let me tell you.. I seen Richard working out at LA Fitness on Fremont Avenue by Cal State LA. He looks very dedicated to his career and away from the B S in East Los. I was born and raised in East Los and it's a hard place to get out of as a male with the odds against you. Much respect to Richard.

You a hundred percent right about that. I grew up just next door in the Boyle Heights area & ended up at Homeboy Industries after my term just like he did. Stories like Richards is one of the things that motivated me to get out of all of it and make something of myself. Homeboy was my first job and now all these years later I work at a hospital & most people don’t have any idea were I came from or the life I used to live. Also your right about the RUclips thing. I wouldn’t say it’s exclusive to chicanos it’s honestly kind of the whole gang culture/prison influencer lane that’s kinda wack. You can tell most of the channels are just vatos making shit up to make money. To where anybody that’s lived the life knows the shit they’re saying is bullshit. There is a couple channels that are legit tho Dubz is one of them

Probably one of the best interviews ive ever seen. It felt like i was there, and the emotion behind it lets you know that its 100% real. I think He was reliving it as he told it. Its amazing to see how richard has grown since his rapping days.
I remember seeing a clip from this interview on Twitter a while back. I just watched a Law And Order SVU episode and Richard played an amazing character. I knew I’d seen him before! Listening to his story now makes his role even more real. Truly dope he’s off doing amazing things, he’s talented.

I felt this at the beginning because I was able to get on the straight path after losing friends to the streets. I been following him since he was rapping as Baby Jokes and could also feel the passion and the pain in his music. Same as when he's acting. His dedication is now an inspiration for me.
Richard is one of the realest dudes out here changing his life for the better, telling his story and he’s one of the most underrated actors. He is a true artist, I’m so grateful I found out about him through his music back in the day. As a young Chicano, I feel so proud to see this. Thank you Jon, Thank you Richard!

I know those types of drugs especially crack or meth can have permanent brain altering effects even years after they’re last used. There’s a guy I know that was a tweaker for a decade that’s been sober for over 9 years and he still is high strung like this & sometimes has erratic mannerisms at times

I was not raised in LA but i had family all over . I have seen friends and family go down this path due to the nature of their circumstances. Thank you for this story, i had no idea one of my favorite actors had lived through such dramatic life.
